"Heya Girls!"
Why does a battered whale from Prater strand in the industrial centre of Lower Austria-South? When did women start wearing their hair shorter and why is that called bob? What would Vienna look like today if all of Otto Wagner’s plans had been realised? And how to quickly tell from which region the food on your plate really comes from? As a well-known curious person, half my life consists of questions – and the upcoming Friday night (finally, for a change) will consist of many, many answers! For the Long Night of Research, countless museums, universities, institutes, and companies open their doors free of charge and show what’s happening research-wise in Austria right now. Which is pretty damn much! Dozens of research facilities offer the change to get active yourself. And if you’re more a hands-on person, you can learn how to wash gold correctly at Geologische Bundesanstalt – just like during the times of the Wild West.

Wishing you a nice week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

TCM: Spring-Cooking
If the Traditional Chinese Medicine has its way, you’d best be knocking on wood in spring. Because right now, it’s the reign of the element “wood”, which means you’d be well-advised to jump-start your metabolism. In her cooking course today, nutritional expert Petra Pfann demonstrates what you need to get active and be up and about, just like nature is doing. She presents spring herbs and their effect on the body and explains how you can support your liver and gallbladder by eating right and which food and products are best at helping cleanse and detox the body.

Instead, we’re heading to Danube Canal Beach – the freshly smartened up Strandbar Herrmann is opening again today! The sun loungers are ready, the sand is awaiting naked feet and the cocktail glasses are polished. Spring Cleaning at Wienfluss
Like every year around this time, the busy brownies of MA 48 and other waste & environmental organisations get down to action to make Vienna clean(er) again! This year, it’s eco-power producer MeinAlpenStrom that starts the public cleaning season – along the Wienfluss bikeway. It starts at 16:00 at U4-station Hütteldorf. They’re collecting (and expertly disposing) everything that doesn’t belong in nature: from soda cans to car tires. So please round up your friends and beautify the city together! As a thank you, there’ll be chinking glasses of free CrafWerks beer afterwards.

LenaMi Stock Sale at Werkbuchcafé
April showers bring … um, April flowers ;-) To make room in her atelier, designer Lena Michailova hosts a one-day Pop-up Sample Sale. With great discounts from up to 70% on previous collections! Including colourful skirts, sexy “Tango Girl”-dresses or T-shirts with cute Matrjoshka prints. The label LenaMi was born out of necessity, by the way: in order to dress up more fancy and pretty up in then-communist Estonia, the Tallinn-born dressmaker simply sewed clothes from fabric remnants like crazy. This passion for sewing has stayed with her. Fortunately!

Ding-a-ling, the biking season has started! For the kick-off, two-wheeler fans can now get high on all things boneshaker at Rathausplatz. Because on the weekend, the biggest Biking Fair of the country tempts you with more than 100 exhibitors, test course and a bike flea market. Besides, the show of the daredevil “Dirt Jumpers” is certainly a highlight for bike fans. And the stuff that Sweet Trial pro Dominik Raab and high-unicycler Mr. Marcus are doing with their bikes is pretty cool too. Better not try it yourselves though, ladies, better be good girls and come pedalling in the big bike parade on Sunday ;-)

Sharing Heritage: Labyrinths in Europe
A spectacular project: a part of the traffic-buffeted Schwarzenbergplatz will become green now! Because today, the biggest temporary plant-labyrinth in Europe is being opened there: it consists of 400 domestic plants like lilac, spindle tree, privet, and a couple of young apple trees – in plant pots, mind you ;-) You walk about 300 meters to the centre of the labyrinth (if you don’t get lost), where a ceramic sculpture and soft music await you. On the outer spaces, billboards show 40 different labyrinths of European art history from historical mosaics to contemporary art. Amazing!

Birgit Liedtke
Hardly known, without label and production company backing her up, but a discovery! Birgit Liedtke is a musician, texter, and filmmaker, lives in Vienna and Weinviertel, has a moving voice and her lyrical texts reach deep. The special thing about her performances is that her concerts aren’t “just” concerts, but more like stories told with multimedia. Her new program “zwischenraum” (interspace) is a personal, intimate evening between poetry and pop, songs and words, diaries and newspapers, everyday life and dream world; simply beautiful!  DDSG Blue Danube
Wiener Weindörfer
Pretty kitschy and touristy, but whatever! Sometimes that’s just what a lady needs ;-) And thus, today’s Sunday is spent taking the ship and a slow train and eating all the Schnitzel: it starts at Schwedenplatz, where you board the colourful Hundertwasser Ship to sail down the Danube for two hours. Then, arriving in Nussdorf, you change vehicles and get on the “Vienna Heurigen Express” that takes you through the mansion district and the vineyards. You can choose to make a stop at either Kahlenberg or Grinzing and then when night falls, the ship brings you back to the city. Now that’s what I call Sunday!

Bob Dylan
The fact that he won a Nobel Prize for literature on top of everything is just one of the peculiar facets in Bob Dylan’s life. He used to be the coolest Rock star, the icon of contemporary culture, the most important song writer of the century. Now God has got a bit old and a bit quirky. But we don’t mind, we still love him! Today, the 76-year old visits Vienna with his triple studio album “Triplicate” (full of Sinatra songs, God only sings oldies anymore). The “Sentimental Journey” with Dylan’s version of the old, beautiful Doris Day hit starts here!

Pal, mein Bruder
Somewhere between oriental fairytale and hard reality, touching and dynamic at the same time: The new play by “Ich bin O.K.”-Dance Company tells the true story of siblings Pal and Jasmeet. As Sikhs, the belong to a non-accepted religious minority in India, plus Pal was born with trisomy 21. The family thus faces double discrimination, has to flee and receives asylum in Austria where cheerful and fun-loving Pal is discovered as a dancer. By the way, Pal and Jasmeet are playing themselves, supported by dancers with and without disabilities. Terrific!

Sexual Harassment – the last taboo?
#metoo, once again! One of the last taboos when it comes to gender equality in society is still a hot and much discussed topic. What does it take for the whole spectrum of sexual harassment – from sexist jokes to physical abuse – to be condemned by society and to have legal consequences, if necessary? These and other important questions are being discussed today by former Green Party lead candidate Ulrike Lunacek, professor Elisabeth Holzleithner and equality lawyer Sabine Wagner-Steinrigl. What is the female version of gitarrero? Probably gitarrera ;-) That’s exactly what the five musicians from Bulgaria, Hungary, Russia, Japan and Austria are – fantastic guitar players. They impress with their virtuosity and sensitive interplay, presenting their own highly original versions of well-known orchestra works via their bass & octave and concert guitars. Today, the finger-savvy ladies plunk, twang and pluck away pieces from their new album with genius interpretations of works from Strauss to Shostakovich whose melodic waltz nr. 2 then sounds like this!

Skin Deep
Hair dressers, barbers, beauticians – the new exhibition at Wien Museum revolves, curls, and waves entirely around hair. After all, the methods that are used to tame the body hair belong to the oldest cultural skills that have great significance and tell a lot about a certain time period. The exhibition focuses on the Viennese history of body carers from barbers, to wigmakers and hairdressers. It shows exhibits like historic perm devices (sounds dangerous!), Grillparzer’s shaving razor or Sisi’s beauty recipes, but also fashion and advertisement graphics.

Shakkei
Gabriel Baradee studied Japanology before he decided to focus solely on fashion, founding his label “Shakkei” in 2009. That’s why some of the blouses and dresses remind you of kimonos, the designer’s favourites are the big “day coats” of the Teahouse collection with their prominent patterns and extravagance. Shakkei is de facto more green than Japanese though – most of it is made in Austria, in a sustainable and fair way. Right now, the fancy store is full of plants and orchids - on Friday, the collection “String Garden”, which was inspired by the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, will be presented. Will surely be lovely!

Now, what are tartines exactly? Basically sandwiches – but since recently, you can find out how bread+spread can actually taste like right around the corner of CitySpotterGirl’s. In her stylish Gastrothèque, newcomer Christina Nasr (worked at Vereinigte Bühnen before) is creating super duper delicacies with poetical names like “Chicken on Vacation” or “Uber Tuber” (with two kinds of kohlrabi). They taste heavily seasoned but delicious. There’s also an extensive, impressively selected wine card which helps taking the edge off ;-) So far they are only open in the evening, though.
