"Heya Girls!"
Well, dear ladies, I have a surprise for you at the beginning of the New Year! I personally, in the flesh, invite you: to a CitySpotterGirl-paper-pattern-wonder-things-exhibition. What’s that supposed to be? Well, it’s simple: CitySpotterGirl’s wonderful “Wiener Musterbuch”, which came out a few months ago, has inspired almost 30 Viennese artists and celebrities to get creative with paper. And they have made such fun, pretty, and poetical stuff with it that we now see ourselves forced to exhibit it. Cabaret star Monica Weinzettl pimped a drawer, Erwin Wurm, superstar among Austrian artists, has immortalised himself in, uh, a not entirely G-rated way ;-) Director Mirjam Unger made a collage, Ö3-anchorwoman Olivia Peter built a mobile, Jones-boss Doris Rose sewed a paper picture, and poetry slammer Mieze Medusa mixed patterns with words. Starting this week, you can see the exhibition “Paper Passion” at Atelier Vote – and for Tuesday night, I invite all of you to the vernissage! Come to admire, chat, and starting-2018-together. And yeah, of course we’ll have a glass of wine as well ;-)

Wishing you a happy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Warenhaus-Salon at JMV
Shalom! Today, the new shop-slash-lounge “Gottfried & Söhne” opens its doors at the Jewish Museum Vienna. On offer: Jewish lifestyle and contemporary Israel-design. To get the latter, art historian and design expert Elisabeth Maria Gottfried jetted to Israel several times. Her cool selection of porcelain, books, fashion, and much else can be admired during a musical tour at today’s opening. By the way: from March on, the iconic bookshop Singer, formerly a resident here, can be found at Rabensteig 3. Good thing too, we would have missed them :-)

Listening to singer Franziska Hatz and her whirlwind-orchestra makes you feel like you are being catapulted right into the vivacious Balkan comedy “Black Cat, White Cat”. There too, you go down the Danube towards the Black Sea, sound-wise – fiery, powerful-voiced, jazz- and Klezmer-rhythmically. Tonight, the band guests at Sargfabrik to give its new year’s concert that has become obligatory by now. Familie Lässig
„Familie Lässig’s” yearly New Year’s Concert has become iconic. If you missed the dates at Stadtsaal due to new year hangover or Christmas vacation, you can now spend a fun night with the six-person-family around Manuel Rubey and Gunkl at the CasaNova. Today and tomorrow, they’ll play their witty interpretations and funnily introduced cover versions of hits to pop in Vienna once more, then they’re off to tour Austria. And since 2017 Clara Luzia has been a fixed part of the family, you can find a fascinating interview with the indie-icon at the portal.

Lola Blau
It’s the strong connection between the main character Lola Blau and her amazing performer, Jewish actress Tamara Stern, that makes this Viennese one-woman-musical particularly special. In his play that first premiered in 1971, sharp-tongued satirist Georg Kreisler tells the story of a young Viennese actress who had to flee from the Nazis in 1938. With his extraordinary songs, he describes, in an almost autobiographic manner, the way of an artist into emigration, her success, and her bitter return to what used to be her home. Tragic, yet also humorous – great!

New Year’s resolutions and healthy habits are all fine and dandy, but a woman still gets to keep a few vices in 2018 ;-) For CitySpotterGirl, it’s the daily dose of coffee, which she simply can’t do without! And since coffee drinking has blossomed out into a real science these days, the hard-brewed now dash off to the Vienna Coffee Festival. Here, Austria’s top baristas and coffee makers like J. Night of Spiritual Songs
Well, doesn’t that sound nice: singing until the soul gets wings! Around ten years ago, the “Night of Spiritual Songs” was invented in Germany. Meanwhile, hundreds of people meet in other countries and here as well to sing simple spiritual songs together – from mantras and yodel to gospel. Tonight, the church in Lainz will be filled with sound for four hours. You can join in to the singing of the three lead singers any time, the text is being projected and accompanied by instruments. Or just enjoy the sound bath and inhale the good vibes!

Bhutan – Looking for Happiness
This will give you a bad case of wanderlust! Filmmaker Stefan Erdmann headed off to the last Himalaya kingdom and captured moving pictures of life, country, and people there. Today, they can be admired in his live-film-reportage: the majestic 7,000er peaks, the Buddhist monks in their Dzongs, bright children’s eyes, and the colourful prayer flags. CitySpotterGirl has been smitten with Bhutan ever since king Jigme Singye Wangchuck declared the Gross National Happiness the highest goal of the land. Surf Film Night with “Bunker77“
Attention, a huge wave of ingenious film insanity is coming our way! Star of the expensively produced surf & avant-garde spectacle: Clark Gable’s stepson, who died in 1977 at only 27 years of age, heir to a million-dollar-fortune and Hawaiian big wave surfer Bunker Spreckels! Even if you’ve never heard of this crossover artist and playboy so far, you just have to see this flick. Anita Bild: A Cherry Dress
Today’s book presentation is all about the colourful and turbulent life of Viennese dancer and singer Anita Bild, who was born in 1915. Back in the day, she was internationally successful as „Anita Douglas – The Viennese Nightingale“. But first, she had to flee to England because of Hitler, then she agreed to a marriage of convenience to Spanish Civil War fighter Donald Douglas. Sounds exciting? It is! Her recently published memoirs tell all about her glamour, love and suffering. In the evening, her son Peter Bild and exile researcher Irene Messinger discuss Anita Bild’s life.

Tanja Ghetta: defiant phase
Just start screaming like a three-year-old, letting your hair down and really get on everyone’s nerves? Why not! In her new program, cabaret artist Tanja Ghetta doesn’t give a damn about diplomacy, her motto is “as long as it’s loud and opposing”. Never mind if there’s a reason for it or not. The native of Tyrol (and a real phenomenon) calls on people to jump a red light, have a barbeque in the rain or go to bed without brushing your teeth. Certainly not smart but very cool and with a lot of potential, we would be able to think of a couple more things ;-) Today is the premiere!

The most recent word & knowledge coup of sympathetic author and radio journalist Reinhardt Badegruber won’t be published until autumn of 2018. But today, you can already enjoy a foretaste! After Burgtheater-Gemeindebau crime stories and his own Viennese dictionary, he’s now for the first time uncovering historic secrets. Song Jing: Stealing Heaven
Heaven and sea blend together at former art commissioner for Bawag Rudolf Leeb’s gallery ARCC.art. That’s due to the poetical graphic reproductions and copper plates by Song Jin, Applied Arts graduand, who has captured unique shipwreck & lighter-than-air moments in life. This makes her just the right candidate for Monsieur Leeb, who is keen on providing exiting art from young artists at fair prices. Randale
Well, I’m a bit beyond the pizza-age. Or so I thought. Until last week, when I found myself at Randale, quite close to the office and realised: there’s a different way to make it! For example with turnips, horseradish and smoked rainbow trout (unbelievably tasty!) or with Black Angus roastbeef and citrus oil. And a pizza with blood sausage, apple and marjoram is called “Wiener Blut” (Viennese blood) there. The ultra-creative dough wheels are baked in the former Transporter-Club – and it’s still very hip and loud, especially when DJs are spinning records at night. From now on, I’m a pizza fan again!
