"Heya Girls!"
How times change. While I’m doing an embroidery workshop in London by the artist Ekta Kaul, who gets the art of embroidery out of the dusty grandma corner, embroidery was about the only creative activity that women were allowed to do a hundred years ago. At the beginning of the 20th century, women who wanted to become artists were still severely disadvantaged. They were not allowed to study at the Academy, couldn’t exhibit, and they were denied access to artist associations. Still: many female artists were involved in the dawn of Modernism in Vienna. They are just all forgotten today. Or rather: they have been erased from art historiography. After a first “investigative” show at the Jewish Museum two years ago, the Lower Belvedere now dedicates a long overdue presentation to these women. From 25 January, “City of Women” shows female artists in Vienna from 1900 to 1938 – a great discovery!

Wishing you a surprising week,

 kaRja
Super Stock Sale at Kleidermacherei
Because of her “real” babies, the first baby of designer Katja Rozboril, her fashion label kaRja, had to take a backseat for a while. From April, there will be a relaunch, with fixed opening hours and a new summer collection. The rooms are smartened up as well and before they paint, saw, and drill there, everything has to go. Meaning: -70% on the collection for 2 days, plus there’s a 1+1 free-offer! They still have much in stock, like skirts, dresses, jackets, long shirts, blouses, fashion show models, prototypes, and a few T-Shirts from the screen print collection.

King Arthur
Now that’s some opera! Henry Purcell’s “King Arthur” is actually a semi-opera (with many speaking parts), a special form of the English baroque opera, which was ousted by the Italian opera after a short boom. But before all the opera grouches get scared off now: the stage spectacle at the Theater an der Wien is absolutely worth seeing! The actual plot around King Arthur, who fights the Saxon king Oswald for the power in England and the love of the blind Emmeline, is embedded in a thrilling background story in Sven-Eric Bechtolf’s brilliant production.

 Christy Astuy
Christy Astuy
Unusual, cheeky pictures that make you chuckle! For her picture series “L’Amant”, Californian and Viennese-by choice Christy Astuy was inspired by an assignment to paint young adults in historical attire for an ancestral portrait gallery. In addition, she’s currently single herself and was wondering about what a lover would have to look like. That’s how the 9 oil paintings with historically dressed up gentlemen were created, from the “Protector” to the male blonde “Il Biondo”. They also show some of her iPad drawings. Original art that puts you in a good mood!

Not only will a variety of hip films come to the screen for the first time in all of Austria today, but they are even free! In Vienna alone, six iconic cinemas from the Gartenbau to the Künstlerhaus join in with premieres and previews. At Filmcasino, they show a preview of the superb French animation film “Minuscule – Mandibles From Far Away”, the Stadtkino shows the moving documentary “Ute Bock Superstar” and – warm recommendation from CitySpotterGirl – the DeFrance screens the brilliant documentary “#Female Pleasure”. Ja Ja Ja Nordic Music Festival
At this point, we are pretty much sick and tired of the cold winter wind, but there are definitely no objections to a purely musical breeze from the north. Today, four fascinating Scandinavian musicians barely known in these parts perform at the WUK and provide Nordic melancholy just as well as cool party sound. The trio “Lake Jons” comes from Finland, also playing will be the daze-pop trio Great News from the Norwegian mountains, the Danish “Hippie-Hop”-singer Iris Gold and – also from Denmark – the eccentric Lydmor. Listen in here!

The big Volksgarten Ball Night
Close to Hofburg, where there’s currently one ball happening after another, and yet totally different: the Volksgarten Disco is turned into a ballroom tonight. With everything that goes with it: little gifts for the ladies, elegant ballroom decorations, and midnight show. And not least three dance floors with different music for letting off steam. The fact that the ball only starts at 23:00 might also be beneficial: more time for styling ;-) Apropos, there is also a dress code: black tie or creative self-interpretations true to the motto “Glitter & Gold – more is more”. If you keep to it, you get a bottle of Piccolo sparkling wine.

Lip balm (smells and tastes good!) and bath bombs are made together. For chocolate is a real fountain of youth for the skin, it provides moisture and has a lifting effect. 60 Years Arena Bar
The Arena Bar is an institution with a turbulent history, from being a dance café to a flamenco venue to a red-light establishment – and for ten years, it has been a “bar of the arts”. The boss, the now more than 90-year-old Helene Wanne, still comes to the bar several times a week to run the business and open her bar for people. The 60th anniversary is being celebrated today with a big jubilee revue with a variety show, literature, music, and a red-light poetry slam; Tini Trampler will host the evening and vintner Friedl Umschaid will present the edition “Rotlichtviertel”.

We know (and worship!) Ai Weiwei, but other Chinese artists? The big exhibition at MAK opening today turns on the lights for you in terms of contemporary Chinese art. Collector and China-connoisseur Uli Sigg has been following the developments of modern art in the Middle Kingdom since the late 1970s, and in the 1990s he began building up the most important collection of Chinese art in the world. Jetzt müssen wir auf morgen warten
A thoroughly feminine theatre night with live sound by singer-songwriter Clara Luzia! Three sisters in spirit, among them also Claudia Kottal, play fragmented mini-scenes of different role models. Because it will start immediately, your own life – but before, the women want to quickly clean out the drawers, find their elderly father a place in a home, and raise the child. They bring to the stage what we all know: family conflicts, memories, aspirations, break up-conversations, meetings at the café or profound insights during cooking. Today’s the premiere!

Cucina Povera
Literally translated, „cucina povera” means poor man’s food and represents the honest, simple Italian cuisine. The cooking course at “Babette’s” offers the chance to learn how to create tasty and refined dishes with little effort. Just the right thing for fans of inexpensive and good Italo-cuisine! The ambiance is harmonious, too: a glass of Frizzante is served while the menu is presented. Afterwards, everyone can snip, cook, knead, taste and arrange – but most of all, ask questions! In the end, everyone joins in for a cosy dinner.

Dancas Ocultas
Insider tip! Today at Konzerthaus, the successful Portuguese accordion quartet “Danças Ocultas” will be playing together with the Brazilian singer and cellist Dom La Nena. A highly emotional arrangement: while the young musician, who is giving her debut in Vienna today, by the way, stunningly sings of weltschmerz (“saudade”) with her velvet voice, the four keys wizards create minimalist and profound sound mixtures from tango nuevo, chamber music, as well as traditional Portuguese music. You can listen in and melt here!

The tables take the form of surfboards, on the wall there glows a neon-pink “Aloha” and in the fridge is Hawaiian Kona beer – it’s only natural that they also serve Poke Bowls to fit the Hawaiian mood. You choose from a handful of recommended bowls (like Shoyu Chicken or Korean Beef) or you put together your own favourite bowl. The basic ingredient is rice, then you add fish, meat or tofu, lots of vegetables and toppings. Fans form a long queue here around lunchtime, but you’ll likely find a seat at the long tables. And if you are lucky, you might land a seat in one of the hammock chairs (!) at the window.
