"Heya Girls!"
And again, Corona has led to a new business idea. Not impractical, I must say. Especially when you can't get out of the office or home office on time and, like me, still haven't inhaled the fact that all the supermarkets close at 19:00 sharp. Empty fridges and growling stomachs are so yesterday. Instead, we now have the Gurkerl in Vienna. At least that's the name of a new online supermarket that delivers to your door on the day you place your order and scores with a really surprising assortment. Bread and pastries from Öfferl (hello, Madame Crousto), organic chicken from Styria, craft beers and fresh-from-the-farm herbs like pimpinella and purslane. And to my great delight as a London fan, there are also lots of British products from Marks & Spencer – exclusively in Austria. And if you want, you can even order everything from rice to milk in returnable packaging (deposit). Rarely has a supermarket been this original.

Wishing you a nourishing week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Important Bach Flowers and Master Herbs
There’s no cure for this? Yes, there is! Natural herbs can actually improve many health problems when used correctly. Today, an online webinar of the “Bachblüten Akademie” presents the most important remedies during a free workshop and shows how to dose and compose mixtures yourself. Those who register will receive guidance on more than 30 flowers and 24 master herbs that help with stress, sleeping problems or inner tension in addition to a visit to the doctor. Even minor quirks and unpleasant habits such as nail biting can be better controlled.

Lockdown Sale at Kartell
Looking for a design bargain? Almost all of the multi-award-winning furniture and lamps by Italian company Kastell can be called “design classics”, whether it's the Louis Ghost chair by Philippe Starck or the Componibili container from the pen of Anna Castelli. Of course, the big Viennese flagship store will open again on 8 February – but before that you can purchase cool design at a reduced rate. Until the end of the lockdown, you get a 15% discount on the entire range! Order by mail or phone. And by the way: Kartell also produces smart pieces for your office at home.

Tini Kainrath: Songs from Vienna
In order to keep your ears from withering away to mere spectacles-carriers during the lockdown, the Vienna Konzerthaus provides them with good music. For that, the new online format “Auf den Punkt gebracht” was launched. This digital pop-up stage offers concerts, interviews and videos, each of which revolves around one genre for one week. At the moment, Wienerlied is in the spotlight, performed by one of the best local voices: soul giant Tini Kainrath sings some of the greatest hits today in the concert stream “Lieder aus Wien”. Her soft timbre and the wistful Wienerlied – a perfect fit.

 Filmarchiv Austria
The forgotten Margareta Heinrich
Few people have ever heard of her, even though Margareta Heinrich was a true pioneer. The director is being rediscovered by the Filmarchiv Austria in an online retrospective that starts today with the film “Genossinnen” (from 1983) about private and political emancipation. Heinrich was one of the first women to study directing, was active as a feminist – and her footage of political upheavals made it into the Austrian parliament. In her films she sometimes playfully, sometimes seriously negotiates female role models and criticises the weight loss obsession – still relevant today.

 Virtualtrips
Tour on Canal Grande in Venice
No one has ever cruised so comfortably through Venice by vaporetto: you are now a passenger of guide Andrea on “Virtual Trips” on the typical water bus, free of charge, the tour is streamed live from the ship. If you register, you can take the boat along the Grand Canal and under the Accademia and Rialto bridges. Through winding waterways, the tour takes you to places in the floating city where you can discover clues about the Knights Templar – and Andrea tells curious stories in the live chat, for example about dinosaur skeletons in the Doge's Palace. A short holiday on your sofa!

Pala-To-Go
When it opened in September, the nice “Bassena Treff” in Floridsdorf was planned as a local supplier and neighbourhood meeting place. Due to Corona, though, they are only selling groceries right now – exclusively regional products from manufactories and small suppliers. But this weekend will be particularly tempting: they are tossing fresh Palatschinken (omelettes)-to-go for the neighbourhood in two variations: the pizza pala vegetarian or with ham and sweet pala with wild berry cream or chocolate – or both. The fluffies are being baked by jam-queen Jutta Enzfelder from (f)eingemacht.

Fair Fashion from liebhaben
With “liebhaben”, a new slow fashion label has come to the city producing mainly green basic fashion. For founder Andreas Nocker, it all started with the earthquake in Nepal, hitting hard the local textile industry, that so many people live on. He wanted to help and has now made his vision of timeless fair fashion come true with his online shop: via Click & Collect, you can shop for basic, reduced shirts, jumpers and underwear made of organic cotton. Everything is sustainable, fair and socially sustainably produced. Those who don't want to pick up their order in the 7th district are served by mail. Back to basics!

The snowdrops are here
Excuse me, I have to raise my voice for a moment. YAY! The snowdrops are in bloom! Not yet on the Kahlenberg, but just outside the city gates, in the Donau-Auen National Park, where it is a bit warmer than in the Vienna Woods. In spite of the recent snowfall, the spring messengers are already emerging in sparse areas, and soon the riparian forests will be covered with carpets of blossoms all over the place! And then the wild garlic won't be long either. By the way: According to the National Park regulations, one small flower bouquet may be picked per person – but no more!

HdM Beethoven Citymap
Now that was quite a restless gentleman! Mr Beethoven moved exactly 67 times in Vienna! Haus der Musik has now developed its own city map – allowing you to follow in the composer's footsteps and independently explore all 67 residences with your smartphone. Beethoven, who was born in Bonn, lived in the city on the Danube and in the vicinity of Vienna for 35 years until his death in 1827. You can download the interactive city map as an app for free or view it in your web browser, get insights about the composer and find out which residences are open to the public.

La Schachtula
Moving with bag and baggage in the middle of a pandemic – that's no small feat. Ulrike Eckerstorfer has taken the plunge and has moved her shop for handmade textile products “La Schachtula” to the first district. At the new address, the doors open again today (hurray!) and a sale heralds the end of the lockdown: individual items from the brand – bed linen, cosmetic bags, dish towels, aprons, and embroidered heating pads – are up to 70 percent off. Also reduced are products by the labels “Mondschein Design” and city map calendars for 2021 by “Vianina”, but only from 8 to 13 February!

Das Qartell
There's a conspiracy in CitySpotterGirl’s neighbourhood – a really delicate one. For “Das Qartell”, three restaurants have joined forces to supply Vienna with their Grätzl cuisine. They are “Zweitbester” with burgers, “Gorilla Kitchen” and its burritos, and “Wiki Wiki Poke” with Hawaiian bowls. The convenient thing is that the dishes of the three can be combined in different ways, and everything is delivered together. This requires planning, so advance orders are necessary. The delivery areas are redefined weekly and vary daily. This means that the delicious food from Wieden also reaches the outskirts.

Baking Courses at BakeNight
When it smells wonderful coming out of the oven and the calories throw a fun party, it's called BakeNight. At this truly sweet event, bakers and confectioners guide you through the preparation of various delicacies live via Zoom. There are several courses on the programme today: Apple Pie with Cinnamon and Lattice Pattern or the Italian classic Profiteroles. Even more challenging is the Fault Line Cake, so called because sprinkles and fillings peep out in a gap between the bases. The courses last 2 hours and are really good value at 29 €. Recipes and shopping lists are provided when you register, and help is available live via Zoom.

Journey to the centre of the earth
Geographer, photographer, adventurer: Ulla Lohmann is not only damn brave, she is above all fascinated by volcanoes. She was the first woman to descend into the deepest active crater in the world – and today she is taking everyone on a journey into the earth's interior via live stream. She accompanies researchers at Mount St. Helens (USA) into ice caves, suffers with the workers at Kawah Ijen (Indonesia) in what is probably the hardest job in the world, experiences the fire breathers in Italy and travels to bubbling lava lakes in the South Seas. The breathtaking pictures and videos are available today in the livestream of her multimedia show.

 Heike Bog
Philipp Blom: About Human and Nature
The idea that humans can control, manipulate and exploit nature is ancient. Already in Genesis, God calls out to Adam and Eve: “Subdue the earth!”. The “Wiener Vorlesung” (Viennese lecture) wants to break with this 3,000-year-old cultural story of man as ruler over creation. In a Facebook live stream, bestselling author and historian Philipp Blom will talk about the fact that humans are not rulers but part of nature – and not even a particularly important one. The climate crisis and the Corona pandemic are making this brutally clear right now.

TonFusion: SanTra and Tres Flores
Throw genres overboard, here comes something new. The concert format “TonFusion” comes from Tyrol and brings disparate musical styles together for Facebook concerts, streamed live from Innsbruck's cultural venue “Die Bäckerei”. Today the fusion consists of the 30-year-old rapperSanTra” and the guys from the acoustic tango trio “Tres Flores”. The former writes profound rhymes and female rap that sounds honest and can be critical. The latter play passionate Tango Nuevo with double bass, guitar and piano. A crossover that you've certainly never heard before.

Loja Portuguez
Portugal is known to be hip and unfortunately heavily infested with Coronavirus right now, so we prefer to go to Gersthof. There, newcomer Peter Regatschnig has opened an unbelievably charming gourmet grocery shop that immediately transports you to Lisbon. Set up in elegant industrial style (yes, it exists), the shelves bend under high-quality gourmet fish preserves, olive oils, port wine, flor de sal, chocolates, chili sauces and beautiful accessories. The ceramics from Vista Alegre and the exquisitely woven scarves from Burelfactory look simply gorgeous. Definitely worth the journey from districts further away!

 Maiz
Maiz
What’s this? Tastes just like in Mexico but is entirely produced in Margareten. Monika Sims, who lived in Los Angeles for a long time and therefore knows what real tacos should be like, not only bakes perfect patties. She also makes the highly complicated corn dough herself – using corn from local organic farmers with a technique already used by the Aztecs. This makes the maize easier to digest and the tacos heavenly soft. The tacos are filled with variations that change daily, and there is always a vegetarian creation. Currently only available as a takeaway, but perfectly packaged despite the overflowing filling.
