"Heya Girls!"
I know, it might sound a little strange to someone who spends their whole time on the Internet and rides around the cyberspace all day on ones and zeros. But: I love paper! And that is why (how do you whisper in writing anyways?) I am preparing a special book for next spring. But it’s still very much a secret! So let’s come back to the present for now – because if you are a “paper lover” like I am, all I can say is: be happy! The wonderful material is very popular right now in Vienna. For example you can find a small pop up store from paper republic at the Kunsthalle, where you can buy beautiful paper pieces from 10 international labels: notebooks, hand-printed cards, office supplies and funny folded animals made from paper. Or the wonderful “Papierwespe”: at the atelier of the same name from Beatrix Mapalagama 39 paper artists from 15 countries are exhibiting their works at the moment. They include unbelievable objects, jewelry, even small houses made from paper. And the number of hip stationary shops in Vienna is rising steadily as well. All I can say is: high potential for addiction!

Wishing you a beautiful week
Your CitySpotterGirl

handWERK.
Craftsmanship is “in”, the DIY movement created a worldwide hype and the word “handmade” is being used inflationary. On the opposite stands the reality of local craftsmen who are fighting for recognition and fair payment in today’s digital world. A new MAK exhibition treats around this area of tension and presents an overview in six chapters, from the history to the current European perspective. There are historic and current pieces of handicraft art to admire and in a live workshop craftswomen and –men are showing daily what they are capable of.

Katrin Navessi
Usually, when there is a concert at Supersense at the beautiful Dogenhof you can go without knowing what it is. That’s also the case today: Katrin Navessi has a voice that is often compared to Suzanne Vega’s. In her youth she listened to charismatic women like Sinead O’Connor and Björk and also to guitar music and later she discovered PJ Harvey, Beck and Bob Dylan. Her songs are built on the basis of simple guitar playing, at the coffee house concert today the singer/songwriter will be performing together with violinist Stephan “Stoney” Steiner. Listen in here!

academy winter market
Of course there will be loads of hip and extraordinary presents made by young artists & friends that are usually hard to find at the annual winter market of the Academy of Fine Arts. But what’s even more important is that this market rocks! The motto this year is “Variete” and it is living up to its name with surreal Dada-circus-theater and unicycle-dance-acrobatics. And today Camilla Glueck will be delighting the market crowd with her singing and B.lip will spread some magic with their 6-lips a capella. Oh yeah, and there will also be “Green cosmetics”-workshops and a pop up hair salon. Wow!

Tina Blau
She would have probably preferred to paint sensual nudes like her male contemporaries, but back then that was impossible for a woman. So Tina Blau became one of the most successful landscape painters of her time. The 1845 in Vienna born daughter of a Jewish doctor was courageous, independent and a role model for many female artists. She was instrumental in the development of the “Austrian mood impressionism”. Starting today, 100 years after her death the Belvedere is (finally) paying tribute to the painter with a big exhibition, on display will be works from all creative periods – even unknown ones.

“Die Vorspielservice”
Now this is high-level vinyl-recycling! Today, Vienna’s most famous Djanes Amina Handke, Electric Indigo and Jade are playing selected vinyl disks and auctioning them off to the audience. And this is how it works: the vinyl-queens will alternately be playing 3 disks that they want to part with. Whatever is spinning on the turntables at the moment will be commented with facts, personal anecdotes and incidental stories, there will be singing along, scratching, rewinding and tempo changes at whim. Fixed bid prices are 2 Euros for LPs and 1 Euro for maxis. How cool is that!

Christmas wonderland at Theobaldgasse
The team of the office community “thermometer” works in different professions ranging from photographer to architect. Every year they, in combination with their connected shop, invite to their “Christmas wonderland” full of design: mach_art is sewing small artworks live and Tintenfuchs is making calligraphy gift tags and tree decorations. Also part of it are trendy accessories from Raumkomplett and non_regular design and delicate jewelry from Veralie. And: during a photo-shoot by Martina Siebenhandl you can have your very own “sparkler photos” taken.

Oooom and relax! Today at the yoga pop up you have the chance to shop, but during the free yoga and fine chai you can also chill out. It starts before noon in a nice courtyard right around the corner from the insanity that is the Mariahilferstraße with a collective sun salutation and in the afternoon you can also try “floating” Acro yoga and Ashtanga for free. Advent at the Himmel
Key words: slowing down. For all of you who want get out of the city for a while: relaxing times and a great view of Vienna can be enjoyed this afternoon at the Himmel. At 15:00 the tower brass band of the Vienna City Musicians will be playing advent-classics in front of the Sisi Chapel. At the Tree of Life-circle you can listen to Schubert’s wonderful “Winter Journey” at 14:00 and 16:00. To warm up there will be fire bowls, hot cinnamon apple juice, cookies and Himmel-wines. And once it gets dark, the Sisi Chapel will be lit up colorfully and provide for a night of romantically-kitschy winter magic with its unique play of colors.

Christmas garden at the museum
It is so exhausting to try to walk through the masses between the stands of a Christmas market! The small “Christmas garden” of the Museum of Folk Art is a tranquil alternative that is not overrun by people. This weekend the garden of the Palais Schönborn is turning into a magical place for homemade hot drinks, elf houses, silver jewelry, grandma’s cookies, hand stirred marmalade, vintage accessories, ceramic aroma lamps and organic perfumes. And the Herli Buam are providing an a capella feast for the ears. So awesome and only until today!

art odds and ends
Historic maps, cosmetic bags, patchwork blankets, clocks, vinyl disks, upcycling fashion – well, “art odds and ends” will be presented at the fine market at the Bunkerei at the Augarten this year. There will be a whole range of different present ideas to be purchased. Young (fashion) labels meet contemporary handicrafts, culinary treats and vintage pieces! And right now the Bunkerei has changed its name to “Punscherei” once again. And that is because it’s a very comfortable location at the moment, with open campfire, fresh roasted chestnuts, paper-thin crepes, hot cocktails and of course loads of Punsch.

The physical Advent calendar
Werner Gruber, who is well known for forming one part of the awesomely-funny Science Busters, as a physicist naturally believes: natural sciences give us lots of great advice on how to make the most wonderful time of the year even better. And that is why he deals with essential questions during his lecture – how to get the best “Vanillekipferl”, why you should gift stuffed toys, which drugs you can buy at the Punsch stand, how much fun you can have with sparklers and how to get the perfect Christmas goose. You can really learn a lot from this!

The Great Christmas Breakdown Special
Pre-Christmas exhaustion or not, today you kind of have to go to the Porgy! The most extravagant Christmas party of the city is happening with more than 30 artists of the Viennese dance and music scene; there will be concerts, comedy, performances, love letters and surprises all through the night. For example Doris Uhlich who will be providing a volcanic eruption of energy as usual, and also five minutes of jokes from Krõõt Juurak, a “darling, I shrunk the Koran again”-performance from Julius Deutschbauer and a depressing song selection from Ivo Dimchev. Hallelujah!

Polly Peachum Project
So very nostalgic and buoyant! The guys from the Polly Peachum Project are justifiably being celebrated for their 20ies and 30ies sound. The Viennese musicians are demonstrating their enthusiasm for the golden twenties in a musical sense on a very high level; each one of the members masters his instrument excellently. There will be winding and tooting like back in the days, sitting still and not smiling is impossible ;-) Today the awesome musicians are performing a pre-Christmas concert at the Schwarzberg, listen and swing in here!

For the Christmas edition also with moose & co and for bargain hunters there will also be a bargain bin. And at the neighboring atelier playa you can find super colorful breakfast boards, post cards and refrigerator magnets with lots of wit. Nativity play at the Kabinetttheater
Who knows the Kabinetttheater by Julia Reichert? In an idyllic courtyard at Porzellangasse unusual puppet theater for adults is presented on a small “living room-stage”. Current program: a Dadaistic nativity play after Hugo Ball. Whoever doesn’t know what to imagine might as well forget anything they know about Christmasy Baby Jesus romanticism. Even just the Foley artist, who is – in sight for everyone – placed next to the stage and provides sounds like dogs barking and desert storms, is awesome. And then the sound, that Bethlehem’s star makes when it rises ;-) Gloriously absurd!

Christmas magic on a ship
Ahoy at the WinterWonderLand! Exploring, pardon me, cruising the city of Vienna by ship is not only possible during the warmer season, but also when the winter wind is whistling over the Danube. And real fans know: that is almost even better! When the lights of the city are sparkling in the dark, cold air and it’s nice and warm inside the ship. The big MS Admiral Tegetthoff leaves at the Reichsbrücke in the evening for an expansive round trip. During the trip you can listen to live gospels and American Christmas songs on board – and enjoy typical festive dishes at the buffet. Christmas spirit!

räder at Spittelberg
And another small Christmas wonderland, this time in the middle of the Spittelberg Christmas market. There, the Biedermaier premises of a gallery are hosting a pop up of the German design label räder right now. With pretty, christmasy decorations ranging from crystal balls to garlands and small candle houses, everything done in pale shades and in a Scandinavian look and very pretty. All of you who are looking for more practical things will find something as well: butter dishes, vases and elegant ceramics pieces are also part of the räder’s “design stories”. Very charming!

And that is kind of what you feel like, when the great harp player Georg Baum and the singer Bernhard Mikuskovics invite to their Christmas concert evening. Palmeri Store
This shop needs a little explaining of the history of bicycles: because the bicycle is celebrating its 200th anniversary in 2017. And in order to honor it appropriately, the exhibition “Bicycles – 200 Years Of Excitement” is being prepared at the moment. A new shop run by one of the initiators is already spreading the nostalgic flair for passionate cyclists in the city. With historic bicycle posters, retro design guardian angel buttons, “Country Road” noodles in the form of streets and nice bicycle shirts. And the new mini-store is also supposed to be a creative home for ideas – thoughts and input around the topic of bicycles is very welcome!

Ludwig van / Mamsell
Ludwig van Beethoven composed his 9th symphony here in this house! The name of the locale was a given – because in the basement there is a beautiful, ancient restaurant that was brought back to life this week. The rooms are wood-paneled and vintage elegant, the kitchen has nothing to do with vintage whatsoever. During lunch, Nora Kreimeyer is in charge, gourmets know her as the “Mamsell” of the St. Charles Alimentary. And that means: healthy, creative lunch menu at fair prices, one set meal for vegetarians, one with meat – and it tastes heavenly! We will have to check out the evening menu of “Rookie of the year” Walter Leidenfrost as well!
