"Heya Girls!"
Just imagine this: 18 people who all studied different things, graduate in 2010 from Cambridge. They found an architecture collective in which every member has equal rights. And only five years later, they win the Turner Prize, Europe’s most important art prize! The 18 friends call themselves “Assemble” – and their approach to architecture is so stunning that I – a self-professed architecture groupie – have been unable to speak of anything else for the past days. In their architecture, Assemble combine collective processes with poetical spaces and economic sustainability. Their projects, which they often build themselves, are prototypes for how a society could build differently. Away from excessive investor dreams, away from cost pressure and an overpowering construction industry. For example, if there’s no money, just build the concert house out of the gravel lying around on the property – like in the project OTO. The Architekturzentrum is currently showing an exhibition focused on the works of Assemble, who also have a guest professorship at TU. An absolute must-see!

Konzept Raum Alte Post
Hanging out in style and drinking coffee while comfortably checking out period furniture is something you’ve been able to do for a year: in a temporary Thonet showroom. Now it’s being turned into “concept room Alte Post” until the end of 2017, and the Thonets are being joined by limited art work of the online gallery INSPiKED, hip electric motor scooters by Lehner and cool clothing as well as accessories by Sport Bach. The micro-roasting house Süssmund has taken over the café. Today, they celebrate their opening, plus a three-day sample sale.

Ibis Styles City Pop UP Volume II
It’s way too hot for a “normal” shopping tour anyway, so today, we’ll shop until deep in the night at a chic, air-conditioned hotel! For one day, the Ibis Styles Hotel in Döbling is turned into a pop-up shop, with 15 native designers on two floors, summer drinks, delicious “Kimbo”-hot dogs, and schelato ice cream to cool down the shopping high. Live-DJ-sounds provide the background for trying on rough-knit summer sweaters by AlexStadler, flirt with some of the newest Elke Freytag-creations or adorn yourself with Rosivita’s Schmuckgesang (jewelry label).

Frank Robert: Endstation Sehnsucht
The Viennese Prater is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world, but its appearance is constantly changing and evolving. In his photobook “Endstation Sehnsucht” (ca. “final stop yearning”), Frank Robert sheds light on this world of illusions that renounces the gravity of everyday life and allows for comic within horror, builds fairytale castles and rewards skill with stuffed animals. Beside visitors, fire extinguishers romp about at the palm-lined beach, crocodiles lurk behind house corners, and a snow-covered mermaid patiently awaits the first rays of sunshine. A ball in the middle of summer! And it’s supposed to not be as stiff as the usual Viennese balls! The Fete Imperiale was brought into being by long-time Opera Ball boss Elisabeth Gürtler, who wants to find money for the Spanish Riding School this way. And since the Lipizzans are already on their summer holiday in the country, the ball will take place in the Riding School. This year’s ball colours: green and white. And by the way: Even if it should be hot, the winter riding school at Michaelerplatz will stay cool – thanks to the air condition system, which will be in action for the first time this year.

Cooking in Hermanngasse
One street, ten hobby cook-teams, two dishes made with the same ingredients and a large lay jury – that’s the concept of the big cooking contest in the 7th district. The hungry drop-in customers get a sort of tasting passport plus cutlery and napkin and thus equipped, can start eating and tasting their way through the creations of the contenders all around Hermangasse and rate them. The most diverse groups take part – from Casa Caria or the team from Audiamo in Kaiserstraße to the “Greens” to private neighbourhood residents. Let’s see who wins!

Danube Island Festival 2017
Ready for the island? Sure, because this weekend, it will once again turn into a gigantic party-zone! For what feels like the 100th time, there will be three days of free concerts, exuberant summer atmosphere and many, many people. For instance on Saturday, it pays off to go and experience the great Falco tribute concert or Mando Diao. The Friday highlights are Amy Macdonald and Cro. And on Sunday, not only Garish, but also Sportfreunde Stiller will perform. And at the “Stadtimpuls Pop-up Kreativmarkt”, 20 young designers will present fashion and accessories. It’s gonna be hot!

Waldviertler farm shop
Two years ago, Daniela Somloi and Thomas Waldherr did what many dream of: they bought an old traditional farm in upper Waldviertel (forest quarter) with lots of forests and meadows. And since their farm is situated in a favourable microclimate zone, an exception in the otherwise pretty rough Waldviertel, they started cultivating rather unusual plants like cherry bush, black raspberries, Indian Tulsi, or giant hyssop. Twice a month, the harvest from Waldviertel is being sold in a private garden in Döbling. This time’s specials are tarragon mustard-ginger syrup or a vitamin C-herb-pesto. Great!

The open Burgtheater
A flock of vengeful Erinyes on the Feststiege (grand staircase), HipHop in Klimt foyer and in between a brass-band from Floridsdorf: the whole Burg is a stage tonight! The occasion for it is the project “Stadtrecherchen”: hundreds of people with various backgrounds from districts 21 and 22 have come together with artists and have created presentations on topics like vengeance, justice, war or family. The Burg-ensemble will take part in the reading of associative texts, in between there will be workshops. Everything for free but with a scorecard!

Gartenbaukino Upcycling Edition #2
If this isn’t dandy! In 2011, when the 100 sqm big Gartenbaukino-projection screen had been replaced in the course of digitalisation, it was made into backpacks and shoulder bags – this Upcycling Edition #1 has been sold out by now. So now the rest of the historic material has been converted, this time into really stylish tote bags, belt bags, pencil cases and cell phone socks. Additionally, the letters of the announcement board in front of the cinema that were used until the 1980s have been made into bracelets. Everything is available now exclusively at the cinema!

Outlaw-songs and scoundrel acts: today, you can experience an acoustic sound journey from the depths of the Mississippi delta to the heights of the Vienna Woods. Hans Theessink, grand master of US-Roots music and the wonderful Ernst Molden will pluck, “schrammeln” and sing together tonight. The first one produces his world-famous Blues and Americana treasures in Liebhartstal (Ottakring), the second – our Viennese “Leonard Cohen“ ;-) – has succeeded in successfully introducing the Wienerlied in the “Wild West”. Ute Bock Birthday-Street Party
She is one of the true heroines of the city and has dedicated the last 15 years of her life to her refugee project. Now Ute Bock turns 75 and today, there is a big party to celebrate the anniversary. With a group of prominent supporters from Josef Hader and Wiener Blond to Maschek on an Open Stage there will be discussion, music and singing – against deportations, for solidarity and for the rights of every individual. There will also be a “Refugees Hope”-scavenger hunt where everyone can experience what it’s like to apply for asylum in Austria. Plus: multi-culti food and dance workshops. All the best, Mrs Bock!

Mindful Yoga at Badeschiff
Yoga flow at the water, that’s something all yoginis dream of in summer! If not the beach, then at least the Donaukanal is a great option because you can now do Yoga on the Badeschiff. The mats will be rolled out on a platform directly above the pool; Caro Demetz will give a dynamic and at the same time meditative Vinyasa yoga lesson. And when it gets really exhausting at some point, you can let your gaze wander over to the water, breathe the fresh air and look forward to the après-asana: it’s just a few steps down to the refreshing cool of the Badeschiff-pool. Very nice!

Better talk about it before the level of suffering gets too much: Dr. Elia Bragagna is one of the pioneers of sexual therapy in Austria, today she is giving a free talk on lack of sexual enthusiasm. According to a new study, one out of three women will experience this once in her life – and it’s not always the fault of hormones or men ;-) Bragagna has a lot to say about that, she explains how lust actually develops and talks about the reasons why women might become listless. Additionally, the expert offers an interesting insight into her extensive experience as sex therapist.

Iris Andraschek. Secondary Wilderness
From a peacock on a dustbin to a child in a pig stall: the Austrian artist Iris Andraschek is dedicating her photographical and cinematic portraits to people whose lives are interwoven with nature. Her work is of documentary style but at the same time sort of mythical-poetic. The new exhibition at Kunst Haus shows scenes from different regions in the world as well as several “portraits in plant form”: exotic plants in little cargo trailers and rare types of vegetables or an old wooden bee trailer that serves as a display for photographs and video portraits. The opening is today!

The only condition is: they have to be usable, clean and functional. If you want to bring more than can fit into a bag you should reserve space. All things leftover at the end will be donated to a give-away store. Everyone should bring their own grillables and drinks, gumboots for a round of farm golfing on the adjacent meadow are available ;-) A wonderful idea, simply executed!

Glashütte Comploj
Forget Murano, you can now experience the true art of glassblowing right here in Vienna! By chance, the young and very sympathetic carpenter Robert Comploj from Tyrol ended up as glass blower and learnt from the best in the world. Having returned to Austria, he revolutionised the glass scene with his almost punk, but stylistically confident approach. On Thursday, he opens his “Glashütte” (a glass shop) in Vienna: there you can buy his fantastic works, from drinking glasses to vases, and soon the master will also work there himself. The ovens are already up; the permits will hopefully follow soon.

Cafe Leopold
The waiting is finally over. And the surprise is big. After many years of clubbing and events, the new and freshly renovated Café Leopold is now purely a restaurant. It’s now sporting a very reduced look, with light wood tables and grey upholstered furniture and – thanks to the new operators, who also run the Ramien and the Shanghai Tan – it’s riding the crest of the Asian food wave. Everything out of this kitchen is simply amazing: poke bowls (Hawaiian rice dish with sushi and vegetables), Gyoza, and curries. They even make an Asian version of beef goulash. Plus: nice service. And handsome too ;-)
