"Heya Girls!"
There seem to be only two possibilities: Either you hate her or you love her. Alma Mahler is not to be had for middle ground and wishy-washy. That was already the case during her lifetime and isn’t any different today. As the wife of Gustav Mahler, Walter Gropius and Franz Werfel and long-time lover of Oskar Kokoschka, she earned a reputation as a muse, but she is rarely seen as an artist and composer in her own right. She was considered the “ultimate femme fatale” as well as “Vienna's most beautiful girl”, while the non-fan faction called her a “delusional woman”, a “seductive nymph” or even a “skunk and sewer”. Maxi Blaha dedicates her new solo play to the controversial woman – and it celebrates its world premiere this week in the garden of the Klimt Villa. The commissioned work by London author Penny Black was written exclusively for Maxi Blaha and brings Alma pointedly into the new decade: “Alma Who? I won't let posterity look up my arse.” Well then!

Wishing you a wild week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Popfest at Arena
Yep, the Popfest can take place! But in an unusual way: the former addendum “at Karlsplatz” is not quite right this year. The music festival moves halfway to the Arena and will be very colourful! Today alone, the indie poppers Buntspecht play there alongside the Femme DMC rapper Dacid Go8lin and the 80s beats of Zack Zack Zack alongside the poetic folk singer Anna Mabo. And so it goes, until everything will come to a crescendo again on Sunday at Karlsplatz. Let's see how well it all works out. In any case, such cool music festivals have been sorely missed!

 Esca
Clearance Sale at ESCA Shop
The two graphic wonder-siblings from Esca have long since designed their way into CitySpotterGirl’s heart (see Shop laudation). But now the prizes are tumbling for 3 days, as well! Many of their cool and playful fairytale and animal print textiles are reduced by up to 50%! Naturally, all pieces are hand-printed, available in cosy organic cotton quality and great colours. Coffee drinkers take note: enamel cups with small glaze defects are also available at a reduced price of minus 30% – ready for the camping holiday, the hiking tour or the morning coffee. So nice!

„Auf Wiedersehen, Kinder!”
It was an adventurous life: They way Ernst Papanek gave hundreds of Jewish refugee children a home in shelters near Paris more than 80 years ago and saved not only their lives but also their souls with his revolutionary reform pedagogy is impressive. CitySpotterGirl’s daughter Lilly Maier, now an author and historian, has created an impressive memorial to the forgotten Viennese and is reading from her work in the park today. An immensely optimistic book that shows that with courage, dignity and love you can totally “just save the world “, after all!

Dust Chambers at MQ
Attention, misleading! The two pop-up balloons that you can enter are by no means dust catchers, on the contrary: they are completely dust-free rooms! Every half minute or so, the air in the installation is completely exchanged by means of a fan and nanotextile. Life without air pollution is unimaginable in big cities like Vienna – here you can experience what it would be like. The organiser is the Dusts Institute, a mixture of research platform and art space. Soon there will also be “Dust Collection Walks” to find out what fine dust is in the air and where.

 Boxschmiede
Trial training at Boxschmiede
Boxing is brutal, bloody and only for men – just prejudices? Boxing clubs like the “Boxschmiede” want to put an end to this and also give women the chance to discover this sport for themselves. Twice a week, the club offers a special “women's boxing” session, where nobody gives you stupid looks or offers unnecessary comments, but where you simply have fun moving and practising strength and stamina – boxing is quite a demanding whole-body sport. Today there's a free trial training session, you don't need any equipment except sportswear.

Hidden Stars
Look, a shooting star! On clear nights, you can see the Great Bear even in Vienna. Other stars and constellations are very rarely or never seen in Austria because they are in the southern sky. These “hidden” star formations will be explored today in the Zeiss Planetarium on the edge of the Wurstelprater. Specifically, under the guidance of astronomers, you’ll travel to the southern hemisphere, where there are constellations such as the “Southern Cross” or the “Centaurus”. Those who want to learn more about fascinating celestial phenomena such as star clusters and dark clouds must also go.

Depot Deko Day
Ever stood in a shop and thought: that's pretty, but I could just do it myself? Yes, we can! Today, you can make your own flower wreaths and other stylish decorative arrangements at home accessories retailer Depot. The staff members at the store are skilled in creative decorating and will pass on tips and tricks: today at the G3 shopping centre, just outside Vienna, and at the branch on Mariahilferstraße on 29 July. Making your own table decorations etc. means prettifying your living space without much effort – very nice!

Full moon boat ride at the Old Danube
Finally there’s something for the romantics among us – in hopefully nice weather, you can fully indulge in your feelings and take a boat ride at the Old Danube in the evening air and under the full moon. The boat hirers will extend their opening hours so you may sail to the most romantic places until shortly before midnight. Hopefully in nice company and definitely with a bottle of Prosecco because that is included in the price. There are sailing boats, rowing boats, electric boats and paddle boats available for the nightly trip. Aloha oe!

 Tini Trampler
Tini Trampler: La Die Gaga Project
La Die Gaga is a chansonnière (actually a chicken) who retells patriarchal music history with her queer musicians. Men often write songs “for” women. Nice in theory, but quite often rather hilarious. Tini Trampler shows this in her variety show of musical, Viennese song, pop and chanson. As “La Die Gaga” she takes the male patriarchy in light music for a ride and puts it under the microscope. She covers songs written for the singer's sweetheart, deliberately stumbling over clichés and criticising cemented gender roles. With humour. Ha!

The eventful lives of dead women
Falco, Qualtinger, Schubert or Schnitzler – when you think of Austrian celebrities buried at Vienna's Central Cemetery, you usually start with the men. Wrongly so, as Elke Papp knows. The city guide invites you on a historical walk in the footsteps of famous women who have found their final resting place here. The actress and “most beautiful woman in the world” Hedy Lamarr, Austria's first female architect Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky or Johanna Dohnal, Austria's first female minister, are on the programme. It's about time to commemorate these women!

Oska
It's rare that mainstream radio stations and indie listeners agree. But the soft folk-pop of the musician Oska is currently played on Ö3 as well as on FM4! Oska's real name is Maria Burger and she comes from Waldviertel. She came to Vienna to study music and sing in the streets, and in 2020 she signed her first record deal with the Canadian label Nettwerk – and has long been able to fill concert halls with her sound that's somewhere between Regina Spektor and Feist. She got her stage name from her brother, who has the same name, but with an “r” at the end.

Elena Kristofor and Laura Sperl
Ok, now senses will be confused and perspectives tested! And everything might be upside down – in the photo exhibition with the long name “It has already happened that aeroplanes flew on their backs when they came out of the clouds again”. Elena Kristofor and Laura Sperl take this sentence by the French philosopher Michel Serres literally: the viewers decide for themselves which way their photos and collages are “right” and they have to make their own way through the installations. Which always creates something new. Cool!

Momo Evening
Momos in this particular case are not the plural of Michael Ende's time-saving girl, but delicious, filled dumplings from the Himalayas! They taste a bit like Austrian Schlutzkrapfen or Spanish empanadas – only with a Tibetan-Nepalese touch. The very best momos in Vienna are served at the Yak+Yeti, where Momo Evening is held every Monday and Thursday. For 16 € you can stuff yourself with so many of the steamed delicacies with aromatic meat or vegetable fillings that you’ll be full until next week. It almost feels like a short holiday :-)

Familie Lässig
Familie Lässig is the Austrian version of a supergroup. Where else do so many stars get together to make music out of sheer fun! Manuel Rubey, Clara Luzia, Gunkl, Cathi Priemer as well as Gerald Votava and Boris Fiala play their originally interpreted and always wittily moderated songs from hits to pop with a lot of charm. Another characteristic of a real supergroup: the Familie Lässig often play only one concert a year! This summer they will be performing on Viktor Gernot's stage in the Prater for one evening. Really very cool.

Puzzled
Xenia Laffely's artworks almost didn't make it to Vienna – they were stuck behind the cargo ship “Ever Given” in the Suez Canal. Just before the exhibition opened, however, the Swiss-born artist's embroidered images of selfies and screenshots did arrive, after all. Laffely, who is exhibiting in Austria for the first time, wants to make the digital world haptic. This is also done by her Austrian colleague Susanna Flock, in whose video installation artificial intelligence made flesh tries to survive in our world. Fascinating and well worth seeing!

AfterWork at the farm
No chickening out: a great opportunity to see beyond your own nose and into foreign realms is offered by today's country outing to Prentlhof. In the middle of Vienna, you can get a taste of life as an organic farmer and take a look behind the scenes! You can find out what a farm in a former hunting lodge looks like right in Vienna. How a mobile chicken coop for 350 chickens works. And where the pumpkins grow from which Vienna's only organic pumpkin seed oil is produced. At the end, there will be a snack time with everything the farm has to offer.

Jerome Bel: Isadora Duncan
“Duncan” was a pioneer of modern expressive dance and feminism. She danced barefoot and without a corset against classical ballet, which in her opinion forced women into impossible forms and denied them individual development. Jerome Bel tries to break open the often tight corset of the dance world with unusual choreographies. He follows in Duncan's footsteps at the Impulstanz Festival and choreographs a portrait of this exceptional figure. It will be danced here – for the first time in Austria – by Duncan specialist Elisabeth Schwartz.

Vintage Commone
A paradise for friends of high fashion with a slim(er) purse! The small shop is jam-packed up to the ceiling – you won't find any baggy second-hand fashion here, but selected pieces by Fendi, Versace, Kenzo, Moschino, Dior etc. For a Gucci bag or a special Burberry coat, you may easily spend a few hundred euros here. But owner Arian Alexander Commone’s goal is to make vintage fashion accessible to everyone, offering much cheaper items, as well. Plus, Commone also provides – super convenient – style advice to make sure you find just the right piece.

Wiener Chic
New and delightful: this little coffee house not only tempts its guests with seductive French sweets and coffee from Costa Rica, but also with elegance and style. A very long time ago, there used to be a glove factory situated here called Wiener Chic – and the young owners have extensively renovated it and turned it into a gem. The boss's wife happens to be an architect, what luck ;-) Now you can eat eclairs, lemon tarts, macarons and mini-cheesecakes in style and take a baguette with nuts or perfect croissants with you afterwards. So chic!
