"Heya Girls!"
I think that's nice: we're allowed to be shamelessly snoopy once again! Allowed to stick our noses into the homes of strangers and knock on strangers’ doors unannounced. This weekend, more than 50 (often private) buildings in Vienna will open their doors which are usually not accessible – and and grant us a peek behind their walls. The whole thing is called “Open House Wien”, the architecture project originates in London and takes place annually in 30 cities from New York to Tel Aviv. Open House shows buildings with a special history, exciting architecture or an interesting concept. This year, for example, HoHo Vienna, the tallest timber hybrid building in the world can be visited. The same goes for the Skywood maisonette flat built on top of a roof, the Zielrichter tower of the Vienna Trabrennverein in the Prater, designed by Otto Wagner students in 1919, or the pioneering Vivihouse project (photo). Sightseeing in your own city!

Live Painting: “Wild & Free”
So, what is it actually like when art is created? Artists usually work in the private and hidden sphere, so there's no “looking over their shoulders”. But today it’s different at Monika Herschberger's live painting session: the abstract painter will paint a picture in the “ArtMotel”, a new gallery for young art – and the public is cordially invited! “Wild and free” – that's what Herschberger's art aims to be. She will be accompanied musically by pianist Agnes Haider, the two women will “simply” improvise away – with brush and keyboard. And give a close-up insight into the painting process.

Mid-century Vienna
Vienna in 1955, a golden era: After the horrors of war, everyone is looking forward to more freedom, more leisure time and seemingly unlimited economic growth. The optimism of the new age can be felt throughout the city – until today! Author Tom Koch has tracked down the vintage dreams together with a photographer and packed them into a book. “Mid-century Vienna” shows outdoor swimming pools, the iconic Gartenbaukino, but also a nuclear reactor (still active today), right in the middle of Vienna! Today is the book presentation in the Volksgarten Pavillon – another pretty mid-century jewel.

Science Fiction at the Park
Gloomy scenarios in nocturnal Margareten!! On six evenings, science fiction films will once again flicker across the screen in Bruno-Kreisky-Park. Since this year's motto is “Time and Space”, they will show films that deal with time travel in the broadest sense. Like today's sci-fi comedy “Idiocracy”, which is set in the year 2505 and in which humanity has evolved into a nation full of idiots. The summer cinema fun is free of charge, and the film nights are rounded off with “space-y” drinks. So, let’s set out to weird cinema, comfy hammocks and a summery park ambience!

World Press Photo 21
Press photos depict the world with all its terrible, beautiful and terribly beautiful events. For 66 years now, the World Press Photo Foundation has chosen a photo annually that best describes the past year, and many other iconic snapshots are also honoured. And there are quite a few of them, especially in times of pandemic! This year, first place went to the Dane Mads Nissen: his photo shows the resident of a senior citizens' residence in São Paulo being hugged by a nurse – for the first time after five months of social isolation.

We like: relaxed, local shopping! Ten designers have come together in a small but nice pop-up on Gumpendorfer Straße in order to offer for sale the highlights from their current collections at the start of autumn. Among them silky fashion by the label Amelini fashion, colourful leggings by Doris Strasser & Daniela Daskalova, extravagantly patterned fashion by Edith Langer as well as jewellery by Edita Rosenrot and ceramics from the workshop of Jelena and Ken Fleck – all pieces are real eye-catchers, like everything here!

Wild Vienna: Wild Herbs Walk
Viennese have long known: the green spaces of the city are often unexpected herbal paradises! On this wild herb walk, you will learn where to find which herbs and how best to use them. Because wild herbs are excellent for refining home-cooked dishes and boosting their nutritional value. Herb expert Alexandra Maria Rath has written a (cook)-book about Viennese wild herbs and will lead today's search in the 19th district. This will be followed by a tasting of dishes with wild herbs, such as goutweed tabouleh and wild elderflower juice. Yummy!

Diversity Ball
The young man in the tailcoat elegantly whirls the woman in the beautiful dress across the dance floor. She is blind, he is deaf. Two lesbians are still debating who is to lead this time, all around are celebs and artists. The Diversity Ball intends to take a stand in favour of a colourful society, it connects people regardless of origin and religion, with or without handicap, hetero- or homosexual, old or young. It’s being celebrated at the classy Kursalon with dazzling live performances, a “Voguing for Equality” opening show and a midnight quadrille in sign language.

Art on the Fence
Things get colourful and creative today in the Börse quarter, for Börsepark turns into an open-air museum for a day. Over 85 artists present their works along a site fence put up around the park specifically for this, featuring everything from aquarelles to abstract paintings and photography – makes for 237m of art market! You can take a nice stroll through the park, meet artists, check out art, buy art and win art. The open-air exhibition is accompanied by music and dance. The street food is provided by Churros Don Diego, Café La Naranja brings paella and Los Mexikas provides tacos.

1st Stuwer quarter late summer festival
The Stuwer quarter, as not only Nino from Vienna likes to sing, is pretty much a “Viennese original”: between Prater and Danube Canal you can feel the real heart of the city beating in the former red-light district, off Kärntnerstraße and St. Stephen's Cathedral. The people of Stuwer quarter think so, too, and are celebrating their first late summer street festival. Today's programme includes morning yoga and several concerts from the young Viennese pop scene. Caterers from the “hood” will provide food, the “Stuwer” gourmet restaurant and the also very hip “Brösl” inn will join in, too.

Sunday-Vintage-Films
A crumbling façade, deserted box offices and no more lights in the display windows: the Bellaria cinema, which was one of Vienna's oldest cinemas, has unfortunately had to close its gates. And leaves behind desperate regular customers! The Bellaria not only had a vintage interior, but also showed vintage films from the 1940s, 50s and 60s on a weekly basis. The operators of the Admiral cinema now have adopted the Heimatfilm aficionados and are now continuing the cult cinema every Sunday: Today they are playing “Rendezvous im Salzkammergut” from 1948.

ZukunftsErwachen Festival
Sometimes visions are needed. And so – after years of vacancy – a visionary urban agriculture concept was developed for the former Haschahof. Sustainability, circular economy and urban nutrition are to be rethought in the historic Vierkant farm in Favoriten. Start-ups such as mushroom producers Hut & Stiel or Blün, which grows fish and vegetables via aquaponics, are already on board. This weekend the Zukunftshof will be presented – on the open house day they have a market of diversity, a solar and wastecooking show-kitchen and herb walks along the Liesing brook.

5-Elements-Cuisine for everyday
In this webinar series, you comfortably learn to cook based on the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine from home. Each week, the focus is on one of the 5 elements. The first element is earth, which stands for late summer, the spleen and the stomach, among other things. The TCM nutritionist and head of the cooking studio “Die Pause” Sabine Dobesberger explains which spices, foods and dishes, according to TCM, are in the earth element. And thus help to improve digestion, challenge cravings for sweets and generally strengthen the stomach.

Peter Pongratz
Fine salon art for the bourgeois living room – the very title of the exhibition in the top floor of the STRABAG building suggests that satire, humour and social criticism are the unconditional pet issues of painter Peter Pongratz. Pongratz makes “real”, authentic art inspired by Art Brut, tribal art and ... children's drawings. His paintings are realistic without being unimaginative, are tongue-in-cheek yet aesthetic. By the way, Pongratz, part of the '68 movement, turned 80 last year – you certainly can't tell by looking at his pictures.

Koralli Korallo
They are complicated and beautiful. And are they stones, plants or animals? Corals are certainly fascinating contemporaries. The play by Viennese director Milena Michalek is seemingly about the coral die-off, but actually about the relation between corals and us humans. Because nature and we are equally made up of dying organisms – where is the difference, really? Loss, death and its verbal expression are often not quite easy: “Koralli Korallo”, despite its playful title, deals with one of the very big human themes. Today is the premiere of the play.

Janet Echelman: “Earthtime 1.78”
Those who call the intricately stretched, illuminated nets entitled Earthtime 1.78 an impressive work of art somewhere between architecture and abstract art installation are right. But also not, for the work by US artist Janet Echelman actually depicts a scientific data set: the waves of the earthquake and tsunami that severely shook Japan 10 years ago. The number “1.78” stands for the microseconds by which the Earth's day has been shortened since then. Echelman's installation spans the MQ’s main courtyard, celebrating its 20th birthday. Impressive!

Today it's haute couture time at the MuseumsQuartier ;-) Fashion Week has been underway since Monday, which means fashion shows by local and international designers, pop-up stores (would be mean if you were only allowed to look!) fashion events! For the 13th time, numerous labels demonstrate on the catwalk that fashion doesn't just exist so that you don't have to walk around naked. Today even with free admission! Susan Meiselas: Mediations
A star photographer who is still more of an insider tip in this country: Susan Meisela's photography focuses on human rights and cultural identity, she depicts violence and change. The exhibition “Mediations” is a show of works that travels through many of her exciting stations in life. Among other things, the US-American portrayed “Carnival Strippers”, young women who gave striptease shows in small US towns, captured the revolution in Nicaragua in pictures and dealt photographically with the consequences of the Kurdish genocide. Jazz on a Summer's Day
A balmy late summer evening in the park of the Belvedere, the sun is slowly setting and a certain melancholy comes over you, because you know that autumn is approaching and that there aren't that many warm days left in this year...What would fit this melancholy better than jazz? And with a top-class line-up to boot: The (also internationally) much-celebrated jazz singer Simone Kopmajer sings together with Viktor Gernot to the sounds of Wolfgang Puschnig's saxophone and the incredibly innovative strings of the radio.string.quartet. Simply beautiful. And a little sad.

Yes My Dear
There's a new concept store in the noble Daringerhof in Sievering! The lustrous art nouveau house with its pretty garden is already enchanting. And when you enter the building, you are basically standing in the extended living room of its owner Elisabeth Schmidinger-Schott. Fine clothes for a bigger budget (from MMissoni, Odeeh and co.) hang next to her own in-house leather fashion collection, and on top of that: home accessories, furniture and a well-stocked bar. Fancy a Fruth tart, a coffee or a glass of champagne on the lawn? With pleasure. Here it's all about one thing: feeling good!

Rhythms Bar & Kitchen
In the new, hip lifestyle hotel “Jaz in the City” everything revolves around music, even the reception is a record store. So it's only logical that DJs put on music in the restaurant – important conversations are rather difficult with the loud volume. But the cuisine is a real surprise. At Rhythms, which is both an elegant restaurant and a cool bar, they cook with unusual ingredients: Austrian rice, elderflower emulsion, hemp seeds. The best thing is to order japas: lots of small starters and main courses to share. But you can only manage that if you're quite starved ;-) The super nice service is also great!
