"Heya Girls!"
Admittedly, I'm a Fasching grouch. I don't find being funny on command funny. Much less dressing up. The problem now is that a dear friend of mine decided to celebrate his birthday during Fasching as a huge costume party. Now what? My last dress-up experience dates back to when my age was still in the single digits. Photographic proof from that era shows me as a real squaw. The only way out: professional help is needed – and this week, the Volkstheater offers it. For all those who don't want to go back to the old dressing-up box with clown costume, cat ears and cowboy boots, the ladies from the costume and mask department will give you tips and tricks for an original outfit. And they will do so at a theatre breakfast on Saturday. All according to the motto "Coffee, Croissant and Costume"! Admission is free, but registration is absolutely necessary. I’m saved!

Wishing you a colourful week,

Pearls as best friends
If you’re thinking of twinsets and necklaces from the 1950s now, you are dead wrong! Veronika Schwarzinger has invited twelve international designers to her gallery on the subject of "pearl necklace". And as of today, you may let yourself be surprised by the reinterpretation of the classic. Andrea Auer’s polyethylene pearls are already cult. But real pearls are also on display, those dipped in silicone that reflect tears of joy, for example, or drilled around the corner, which then decorate the décolleté in a pretty square shape. Innovative and sometimes funny, too!

Bill sings Weill
As a singer she became famous with the chansons of Edith Piaf. But for years the wonderful actress Maria Bill has also been a great fan of Kurt Weill – in her new programme "I'm a stranger here myself" she traces the creative path of the brilliant composer, songwriter and cosmopolitan. The result is a mixture of songs with hard, socio-political and provocative lyrics that Weill wrote together with Brecht and soulful musical songs from his New York time. And of course, the "Pirate Jenny" from the "Threepenny Opera" will not be left out, either.

Cashmere Sale at talking textiles
All the handmade pieces at talking textiles come from women's cooperatives and small family businesses in South Asia and Southeast Asia. Fair payment of the producers and conservation of resources are particularly important to the founder duo, two ethnologists. Now there is a great discount on cashmere products: scarves in many colours are more than 30 percent cheaper, a lot of individual pieces from silk stoles to wall hangings and the hand-woven carpets are 20 percent cheaper. The unusual fabric patterns each tell their own stories.

 Cindy Sherman, Metro Pictures
The Cindy Sherman Effect
Whether social media narcissism or reality shows – it is the artificiality of the identities of our culture that Cindy Sherman, American art icon since the 1980s, reflects in her works. Her role as a source of inspiration for subsequent generations of artists gave rise to the exhibition "The Cindy Sherman Effect". Her works are juxtaposed with those of 21 contemporary artists. Among them are Pipilotti Rist and Elke Krystufek, who, like Sherman, are largely self-staging. Their themes: physicality, gender roles, exhibitionism, voyeurism.

Ja Ja Ja Festival for Nordic Music
At this point, we are pretty much sick and tired of the cold winter wind, but there are definitely no objections to a purely musical breeze from the north. Today, four fascinating Scandinavian musicians barely known in these parts perform at the WUK and provide Nordic melancholy just as well as cool party sound. From Finland comes Lxandra, the Norwegian singer-songwriter Jarle Skavhellen plays timelessly beautiful folk songs, the wild noise rock trio The Entrepreneurs comes from Copenhagen and – also from Denmark – the eccentric Blondage. Listen here!

Dancing in a Rococo Robe
If you only know the midnight quadrilles of the Viennese ball season, you will be surprised what else a quadrille can do! On this ball evening original dances of the 18th century to live music are on the programme. "The Adventures of Baron von Münchhausen", known as the Baron of Lies, are this year's motto of zeitenTanz. Costumes can be rented in advance, but loving improvisations are also welcome. Whether baroque or rococo, peasant or noble. The celebration will take place in the historic Spiegelsaal, formerly the Rothschilds' music room.

Super Bowl Party
Admittedly, the rules are a bit complicated. But once you get the hang of them, there’s hardly any sport more exciting than American Football. More and more people in Vienna seem to agree, because today there’s more than one location where they watch the Super Bowl: like in the Marriott Hotel, where, in addition to several screens, 3 All You Can Eat & Drink buffets offer a classic American feast until the early hours of the morning. A mega party with huge screens will also take place at the Arcotel Wimberger. Well then: San Francisco 49ers against Kansas City Chiefs! And in the break Shakira and Jennifer Lopez will sing.

Forest Bathing in Wienerwald
Things can be light, ladies, and playful, for once. For real. Angelika Gierer, founder of ShinrinYoga, combines the Japanese practice of forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku) with Indian perception exercises and uses the trees as a bridge between earth and sky, leading to our very own sources. While hiking in the forest, she takes interested people with her into an apparent parallel world full of magic and inspiration. The immune system is strengthened (the famous Biophilia effect!), stress is reduced, the empathic capacity is increased. A contribution to social cultural change. So unplug and get into the wood wide web!

Make Bath Cosmetics yourself
That’s how to do natural bath cosmetics: you just make bath candy, bath bombs and bath salts yourself. That's not particularly difficult and can actually be done quite fast. Herbalist Julia Binder uses only home-made cosmetic products herself and in her Sonnentor workshop today she will show you a variety of recipes for conjuring up your very own personal bathing pleasure products made from simple ingredients – with dried herbs and flowers. In any case, you will march home with a fine, self-designed product, whether creamy or bubbly.

Camellia and Azalea Blossom
It all began in 1776, when the Swedish naturalist Karl Peter Thunberg illegally brought four camellias home to London from his trip to Japan. Three copies were given away to royal gardens, one of them landed in Schönbrunn.  To this day, the Palm House has a historical collection of camellias. And as always at this time of the year, these beauties start to bloom, at the very back of the so-called cold house. As of now, you can visit these colourful and irresistibly fragrant beauties – together with an opulent selection of azaleas. Ah, when will spring finally come!

Wunderwerke “Sisterhood“
And the flowery theme continues, at least partly. In the Facebook group "Wiener Wunderweiber", tens of thousands of women, including many artists, are exchanging ideas by now. One of them is Judit Fortelny, who is now organising a Wunderweiber exhibition for the second time. 16 female artists – some hardly, some better known – are showing a variety of works from today. Among the "Wunderwerke" are expressive-abstract collages, paintings and delightful illustrations as well as object art. Vernissage is today, the beautiful theme is "sisterhood".

The Samuel Pepys Show
This guy clearly had too much time on his hands. Samuel Pepys, an official at the London Naval Office, wrote for hours in his monstrous secret diary every day from 1660 to 1669, which in the end was 4000 pages long. And he tried under all circumstances to prevent other people (i.e. his wife) from knowing about his notes, so he wrote them in code. Today, Christoph Grissemann plays the most manic diary writer in history. Digestive issues are dealt with in just as much detail as the powdered noses of the king's mistresses, binge drinking, eroticism and buying wigs.

Max Stiegl: culinary friendly match
Well, this is good news for gourmets. The Burgenland chef Max Stiegl brings the signature dishes of his wonderful "Gut Purbach" cuisine to Vienna and will cook for the evening guests of the Dstrikt Steakhouse in the Ritz-Carlton Hotel for a month. Born in Slovenia, Stiegl became famous as a "Nose to Tail" chef long before the term was fashionable – gourmets from all over the world travel to Burgenland for his unusual (giblet) menus. Tip: a special highlight on the friendly match card is the "Chicken in a Bubble" – but it's only available on advance booking.

Schickeria
Vienna has a lot of nice stores for home accessories but now a really special one has opened. At the new Schickeria with its elegant and colourful walls you will find only beautiful things that you cannot find anywhere else in Vienna – and that you would be happy to take home. The woven lamps, for example, come from France, the colourful enamel tableware is produced by three friends in Istanbul and the poetic vintage prints are by the Danish printer The Dybdahl. By the way, it was at this point that CitySpotterGirl’s “I won’t buy anything”-resolution ended!

Caffè-Bar Casa Caria
Fans of rare citrus fruit and excellent olive oils know the Casa Caria of course – nowhere else in Vienna can you by such unusual oranges, zedra lemons and bergamots as here. After the first shop in the 7th, a second one opened in the Lindengasse and there – trara! – you can also eat now. They don’t have a wide offer yet (the professional cuisine is still in the making), but that doesn't matter: there are heavenly tortellini from Valeggio sul Mincio, which are constantly carted here fresh from Italy. Filled with duck, Burrata truffle, pine nuts or orange thyme. Delizioso!
