editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Not that I like old Brecht much. But one passage from his poem "Wahrnehmung" fits the time pretty damn well: "The toils of the mountains are behind us, the toils of the plains lie ahead." The acute danger of Corona is halfway gone, now some things are being re-started, some things are not, nobody really knows what’s going on, and the cultural industry should please help itself. At the moment it is difficult for us, too, to stay on top of things and to compose a nice newsletter every week. So this week we mix "real" events and digital events. So: do not get mixed up! The Kosmos Theater is particularly creative in this respect. It is celebrating its 20th anniversary – virtually, since there's no other way. The Digital Birthday Bash on Friday starts with a scavenger hunt following the tracks of resistant theatre women through Vienna (charged smartphone required!) and ends in a livestream where texts of 20 feminist drama queens are read. Six home concerts with Mieze Medusa, Yasmo & Co. Motto of the birthday: Stay with the Trouble. We do that anyway ;-)

We can do this – together!

Tribute to Gianmaria Testa
That was a truly legendary evening of music! When Gianmaria Testa – with his poetic songs and his melancholic style the singer was Italy's "cantautore numero uno" – died far too early, the Sargfabrik asked music colleagues and companions to reinterpret his songs. The band Donauwellenreiter as well as long-time friends and colleagues such as the clarinettist Gabriele Mirabassi joined in. "Die Strottern" made a nice contribution, too, as they were great fans. The result was a memorable tribute concert, which is available today for free online. Must see, uh, hear!

Vienna City Gallery Walk
Today, you will have to make up your mind: either take a leisurely stroll or really hike at full speed. Either watch a few pieces of goodies or work through the whole tour. Although the Vienna City Gallery Walk takes place in a somewhat reduced Corona style, there are still nearly 40 galleries presenting the great variety of art and culture. Anita Münz not only shows her horn jewellery but also early feminist drawings. Gallery V&V exhibits wild mask art. And the new AG18 Urban Art Gallery presents "street art on canvas" by young Greek artists (photo).

Fashion Days Fresh it up
With her Fashion Days "Fresh it up" Verena Bachler-Szenkovits gives us back a little fashionable normality today. She has a few pretty brands like Dolce Vita on offer for analogue shopping with fashion you can touch in Wieden. There is a 30% discount on many Fend models and just in time for the ice saints, their spring and rain coats are half the price. Strandbar Herrmann & Co
Yes! Yes! Yes! The time of withdrawal symptoms and eternal self-cooking is over, as of today the gastro scene is allowed to open again. Under certain conditions (safety distance, no sitting at the bar, etc.), but what the heck. At the Strandbar Herrmann, the deck chairs are not set up as close as usual, but the drinks taste the same as always. Cafe Hildebrandt can finally play in the beautiful garden in Schönborn-Park again. And the Schweizerhaus opens its 100th season today with ham hock and beer. People, go eat out! The restaurant owners urgently need our help!

 Arthur Arbesser
Arthur Arbesser Pop Up
The successful Austro-designer Arthur Arbesser was one of the last who could present his fashion line at the Milan Fashion Week. At the moment he is not allowed to visit his home, but he has sent his new summer collection to Vienna. Thank you very much! Thus you can try on and buy his wild patterns and graphic prints in the pop-up store. These include light and airy dresses, trousers-skirt combinations in dot design and radiantly rich yolk yellow. For the next presentation in Vienna, the Milanese-by-choice will hopefully be able to come along with his fashion again.

What’s blossoming here?
When it comes to food fresh from the meadow, many know the daisies on the sandwich. Today's herb hike on the outskirts of Vienna in Ottakring reveals what else there is to pick for your salad and how herbs can be used for health and body care. Because in May, one can actually discover a multitude of wild herbs and meadow plants already; besides dandelion and elderberry, meadow sage is already in bloom, as well. After the hike (in small groups and in consideration of the current safety requirements) you will definitely be able to recognise spring herbs!

 Eurovision Song Contest
Eurovision: Europe Shine a Light
Shrill, kitschy and thanks to numerous bizarre performances they have achieved absolute cult status: We love the Eurovision Song Contest. And this year, the spectacle will again be staged after a lot of to and fro – only different, corona-wise, namely as a two-hour live show on YouTube. For insurance reasons there will be no voting for the songs of the 41 artists, but according to the host country Holland they have some surprises planned. A joint virtual performance of all ESC artists and a video choir of singing fans are already fixed. The show must go on!

 Ragga Gröndal
Ragga Gröndal
High up north she is a star: every 10th Icelander has an album of Ragga Gröndal at home, she is something like a national treasure! Now the singer-elf with her mystical mix of ballads, folk and pop is making a guest appearance on YouTube – and gives a very special home concert. Her music is at once magical and adventurous, the sound – although strongly rooted in Icelandic folklore – nevertheless modern. The singer from Reykjavik has already won the renowned "Iceland Music Award" four times, listen in here. Great music from a small island.

Lower Belvedere: Into the Night
So much reopening joy! This is because the Lower Belvedere is now open again and the much-acclaimed exhibition "Into the Night" – a cooperation with the Barbican London – can be seen for another two weeks. The show explores the pulsating world of the "Avant-garde in the Nachtcafe", which is brought back to life by reconstructed locations true to the original. Very nice: all guided tours of the exhibition are currently even free of charge. But only for two more weeks ;-) Also restarting soon will be the Belvedere 21 (on June 1st) and the Upper Belvedere (July 1st).

 Archiv Naturfreunde
Hand in Hand durch Berg und Land
It all began with a small advertisement in the paper Arbeiter-Zeitung in March 1895. 125 years later, the Naturfreunde still exist and their long history is explored in the special exhibition in the Karl-Marx-Hof launderette. Among the replies to the advertisement there is also a letter from the young Karl Renner, then a law student. He was also the one who designed the emblem of the new association: the handshake with three Alpine roses. And a slogan was quickly found: "Hand in hand through mountain and country". Today there are members almost everywhere in the world.

Wunderl Pop Up
Oioioi, shoe connoisseurs get all giddy when they hear the word Wunderl! Because the chic shop carries wonderfully pretty designer shoes and bags. The only downside for us Viennese ladies: the shoe paradise’s home is near Wiener Neustadt. But: for 4 days Wunderl now comes to us into town for a pop-up and he comes bearing tempting goods. Best shoe picks then, dear ladies, from mules to pumps, from Tod’s to Jimmy Choo, from new arrival to outlet bargains. And the enticing shoe wonderland is almost always open until 20:00 in the evening. Hallelujah!

360°-tour: the gutted Wien Museum
The Wien Museum even manages to get something cool out of a construction site. Something we wouldn't get to see even without the corona virus, "Artscope" managed to record with a panorama camera. The ground floor of the completely gutted museum can now be inspected on a virtual, user-controllable 360° tour. The concrete walls are the perfect canvases for graffiti and the staircase has been decorated with geometric shapes. Looks eerie – and impressive. By clicking on the white round symbols, you can enter the adjoining rooms. Astonishing online-walk!

Everything will be fine at Q21
A small open-air exhibition with good news: Alles wird gut (everything will be fine)! With this motto, Q21 brings art and positive vibes to the forecourt of the MuseumsQuartier. Thank you, that's exactly what we need right now. The works of six artists are shown on stands and on the projection tower – colourful, humorous, positive. On the depiction of the saints by Sebastian Schager, Holy Mary and baby Jesus wear cool face masks. The cuddly pink little animal by Maria Legat promises with a broad grin: it will all work out!

Strengthen your back in the home office
The temporary office at the kitchen table or on the couch may be comfortable for the moment. Ergonomically, it's more... well, let's say not quite perfect. Back and neck pain is often the result. In order to keep the tensions from becoming chronic postural damage, you can now attempt to prevent them with physiotherapist Veronika Winter. In her free live workshop, she uses Zoom to show simple and targeted exercises to relax tense muscles and strengthen the back. Great for relaxing in between, previous knowledge is not necessary. Registration is possible by mail.

NHM is reopening
The openings are making headway, yes! Today, the Natural History Museum is one of the first museums to open its doors again, even if it’s only the raised ground floor with the halls 1 to 18 for the time being, but still, we do not want to complain and rather enjoy what is offered. So from today the photo exhibition "LÖSS. A woman in the landscape" can been seen. Löss is where they found the Venus of Willendorf and Fanny vom Galgenberg. Elisabeth von Samsonow's performance photographs refer to these "older sisters", which are also exhibited at the NHM.

Deadly Lockdown
A death shortly before the Zoom meeting. The theatre ensemble Alice (women only!) shows in their first online crime story what it might be like to investigate a murder by video conference. The actresses recorded their play "Deadly Lockdown" exclusively for the streaming platform "Roomservice". The murder victim is their mutual friend Laura. With the limited means of isolation, the virtual girls' night tries to solve the crime – and quickly speculations turn into solid accusations. Watch and solve: tonight with online ticket.

Lush. It's the first word that comes to mind when you walk in the door. Andreas Bamesberger has reactivated his "old", actually closed flower concept store, as his main business – stunning flower arrangements for luxury hotels and events – is currently on hold. Good for us! Because there is hardly any other flower shop in the city where you can find such beautiful and exceptional flowers and plants. Much for the vase, some also for the balcony and garden (like the most luxuriant rosebush CitySpotterGirl has ever seen in a pot). Plus chic accessories, decoration and pots – an unusual shop!

allegro
The opening was before Corona, but then the shutdown came soon after. Marco Russo was able to keep his pretty little Osteria open because he also sells Italian food as "Alimentari" – but it's only now that it's really getting going again on Friday. Then, homemade pasta and Italo classics will be on the menu again, which the highly likeable chef will serve in front of the lightning blue counter. All without Gigi and cooked quite straightforwardly, just like the grandmas did (allegedly). Asparagus risotto, tagliatelle al Ragu Bolognese, Panna Cotta – has a touch of a holiday in Italy, sigh.
