"Heya Girls!"
Summer has abruptly cleared off, my email accounts are overflowing again and from one day to the next there is a lot going on in the city. Meaning: as of today, your favourite newsletter will navigate you through city life again! And the art scene is off to a big and colourful start into autumn with Parallel Vienna. The art fair not only shows art from all fields, it also takes place, as every year, in an unusual, vacant building. This year they chose the former Semmelweisklinik, named after the famous doctor and obstetrician Ignaz Semmelweis. Aspiring as well as established artists from home and abroad were invited to deal with the building and its history. The result: around 170 rooms of the former maternity clinic and hospital school will be occupied by more than 600 artistic events. So there is a hell of a lot to see! Let's do it.
Wishing you an exciting week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

American Photography
Everyone knows the “American Dream”. But the new exhibition at the Albertina is actually about quite the opposite. American photographers like Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Nan Goldin and Cindy Sherman hold up a mirror to society, sometimes in a humorous, sometimes in a critical way. Sophisticated colour shots of consumer culture alternate with dynamically shot-from-the-hip street photos of the metropolises. Instead of wonderful depictions of nature, you will see sprawling landscapes and the excesses of tourism. Great photographic art from the 1930s to the 2000s!
Albertina, Albertinaplatz 1, 1010 Vienna. Until 28 November daily 10:00 to 18:00. 16.90 €. Web

Laniato
Heavens, how time flies. Vienna's first wool café opened exactly 10 years ago. In the light-flooded shop you found and find a huge selection of wool (e.g. Merino in over 100 colours) and knitting accessories, but you can also get started right there yourself while having coffee and homemade cookies. Laniato celebrates its birthday with an autumnal assortment and a nice sale: from 1 to 4 September, everything is 10% off. The Laniato sets are particularly convenient, containing everything from knitting needles to decorative wool, depending on the model (scarf, hat, baby blanket).
Laniato, Beatrixgasse 4, 1030 Vienna. Mon-Fri 10:00 to 13:00, 14:00 to 18:00, Sat 9:30 to 17:00. Web

City Sounds
The Konzerthaus doesn’t start the autumn season in a classical way these days, but with faster rhythms. Austria's currently most exciting pop, indie and electro artists will perform over three days. On the first day of the “City Sounds” festival, they include SFYA, Monsterheart and Pauls Jets. SFYA (stands for “simply for our attention”) are singer-songwriters with a very spherical electro touch. Anna Attar aka “Monsterheart” calls her music style “graveyard pop” and sings thoughtful songs with beautiful melodies, and Pauls Jets make indie pop between poetry and goofiness. Cool!

Planet Matters
After this summer's weather catastrophes, it should have become obvious to everyone that climate change requires rapid action! A new attitude towards the planet and all its species requires the cooperation of various fields of knowledge. But how can such cooperation produce groundbreaking solutions in the field of climate? At the two-day conference, first-rate players from architecture, art, design, ecology and economy will discuss our collective responsibility to stop or at least mitigate climate change. There’s free admission!

Of course, the beautiful items can also be purchased ;-) The exhibition is organised by the association “Iranian Culture in Vienna”, which wants to give Iranians in Vienna a voice. On Sunday with live Persian music!

Hedy Lamarr
Puppet theatre for adults – the unusual Schubert Theater plays with dolls. The new play is about Hedy Lamarr. The life of Hedwig Kiesler, a Viennese actress who made a career in Hollywood, was both dreamlike and traumatic. Idolised for her incomparable face, her intelligence was usually underestimated. Lamarr was a style icon, film actress, madwoman and inventor, seductress, prisoner, victim. Director and puppet maker Kai Anne Schuhmacher stages the play as a passionate search for truth about an abysmal heroine.

Die SpätSies: “Voll Zeit”
After a combined 144 years of life, Krista Schweiggl and Barbara Klein are convinced that the world will end without feminist cabaret artists. Therefore, and because they now have “Voll Zeit” (full time), they invite you to an evening of cabaret that opens your eyes and lifts the corners of your mouth. The 2 actresses already performed as a cabaret duo in the 1980s, and after a 30-year break, it's that time again. It's about the trials and tribulations of one who wants her driving license renewed – but actually about life reflections and criticism of the present. The preview is today!

Queer Street Festival
Very colourful, very queer, very nice! This year the street festival “Andersrum ist nicht verkehrt” will set up its stage in Esterhazygasse and present queer artists (only on one day due to Corona). The STIXX drummers will kick things off, followed by the comedy drag queen Kleinkunstprinzessin alias Grazia Patricia. Headliners are King & Potter: the duo sounds like an international pop band, but the singer/songwriters actually come from Austria. There are six acts plus DJs at the beginning and end, and from dancing drag queens to singing show talents, all concerts are free.
Stage: Esterhazygasse, 1060 Vienna. 4 September from 14:00. Free admission. Web

Book flea market
Reading is like an adventure in your mind. Bookworms can now get literary input at the unique book market of Herbert Bauer, who has been collecting antiquarian treasures for more than 20 years (!) and organises a fine market at the VHS every now and then. This time, several private exhibitors and micro-entrepreneurs will be offering their bibliophile rarities, historical books and paper antiques for sale. From paperbacks to first editions – a true treasure trove! There’s free admission, and because of Corona, the flea market is to take place outdoors in front of the main portal this time.

Adamah BioHof Festival
Off to the veggies! The weather may have done some funny antics this year, but at Adamah Biohof (the one with the organic boxes) there's still every reason to celebrate a big harvest festival. Just outside the city gates, organic-fans can spend the weekend snacking on happy vegetables or organic kebabs and shopping for natural cosmetics and sustainable fashion at the market stalls before setting off on a field tour and listening to the concerts. Plus, they have workshops where you learn to make deodorant, beeswax wipes and flower wreaths, and afterwards a shuttle bus brings you back.
Adamah BioHof, Sonnenweg 11, 2280 Glinzendorf. 4-5 September 10:00 to 19:00. Free of charge. Web

Reopening of the Burgtheater
The Burgtheater remained closed for a full 307 days – the longest period in its history overshadowed by two world wars! But now it will reopen, and the Corona-injected hiatus has been used for a remodel: the new seating might actually make going to the theatre “in the Burg” comfortable. The festive reopening will feature texts by Rainald Goetz, recited by the Burgtheater ensemble, and a keynote address will be given by current Ingeborg Bachmann Prize winner Nava Ebrahimi. Schiller's Maria Stuart will follow tonight as a prelude to the new theatre season.
Burgtheater, Universitätsring 2, 1010 Vienna. Sept. 5, 12:00. 4-18 €. Web

Theatre cult and passionate collectorship! Make-up bags, hair pins, walking sticks, busts, porcelain figurines – what happens to objects of famous theatre stars after the end of their careers? Theatre enthusiasts have collected relics of their favourite stage stars of the 19th and 20th centuries for decades. Now these items have been put on display and tell the story of their once famous or infamous owners in a special way. For example, one finds Paula Wessely's “Bambi” award here or the make-up box of opera singer Helge Rosvaenge.

No Stress. Mira kocht.
The fact that crime novelist Eva Rossmann is not only a journalist, but has also been a trained cook for several years, is probably well known by now. So it's no wonder that she also likes to send her main character Mira Valensky into the kitchen. Rossmann has now compiled all the recipes from the Mira Valensky crime novels in a practical cookbook. It includes 200 instructions – creative, simple and quick, from lamb from the oven to baked apple wedges. Tonight, the cookbook will be presented at Thalia – wine tasting included.

Fleischloserei
Ui, Vienna has the first butcher shop without meat! The small store in Josefstädter Straße promises “vresh food” or vegan delicatessen. Various kinds of cold cuts, Leberkäse, sausages, bacon and steak are manufactured here from soy, Seitan, pea protein, etc. The ingredients are Austrian and of organic quality, and the delicacies are packed in paper or, completely “zero waste”, in your own Tupperware. Butcher Silke Bernhardt is founder of a Foodcoop, sustainability and regionality are important to her. Best of all: you can also get fresh sausage, Leberkäse, and roast beef with a Semmel.

Brasserie Zögernitz
A house with history: The old Casino Zögernitz was opened in 1837 and with its “richly decorated hall” it developed into a popular meeting place of the Viennese high society. In recent years, things quieted down for the Biedermeier jewel until Marco Simonis opened a brasserie there in the summer. With floral wallpaper, marble, brightly coloured furniture and neon patterns on the ceiling – a wild, yet still elegant mixture. The cuisine has a French touch, whether moules frites (small mussels) with fries or char with truffles. Tastes very elegant, too. The highlight: the beautiful garden!
