"Heya Girls!"
She smoked like a chimney, swore like a trooper and from the 50s till the 90s she was one of the most self-confident and courageous women of our time: Melina Mercouri. Conviction, fighting spirit and verve run like a thread through the entire life of the 1920-born Greek actress, singer and later also politician: When people said she was too young, too blond, too untalented at the beginning of her career, the non-classic beauty didn’t let herself be put off and made her international breakthrough in 1960 with the comedy “Never on Sunday“! She was also notorious for her everlasting love for Greece, which even continued throughout her expatriation during the Junta. As of 1981 she wrote “true” history in her home country when she fought for the return of the stolen Parthenon Marbles, in her function as minister for culture. Starting the New Year with such an outstanding woman is not bad at all. The stage Bühne Wieden pays tribute to her this week (naturally including her great songs) – and we take the tireless lady as our role model for 2016.
Wishing you a lovely week

Amalea and Stereo Bullets
Even in Germany they are already talking about the New Austrian Wave. And there are ever more Austro-pop-rock bands coming to the fore. Today, the singer Angelika Zach and her Viennese Combo “Amalea” show how catchy tunes work and their lyrics and instruments will make hearts and the corresponding people jump! It sounds beautiful, melodic and for example like “A Reason for Hope“. The second band comes from Lower Austria, is called Stereo Bullets and beats drums and guitars a bit harder. Both of them live and with new albums!

Anne Schneider: Ableger / Lessening Fold
The sculptures of the Austrian ex- Pistoletto master class student are f-e-m-a-l-e to the core – and yes, that’s not really a typical artistic criteria, but so what ;) The organic, mostly skin-coloured objects of the 1965-born sculptor are bodies, furniture, rooms and thoughts at the same time and they take visitors into a pink conception paradise of stitches, folds and imprints: there are soft vulva worlds of wax and fabric, hard ceiling and concrete installations and other symbolic geranium “cuttings”, from which new and beautiful things will emerge! Only until 17 January!

Today’s opening of the new Inner Sunshine Institute of the experienced life coach and kinesiologist Claudia Schwab-Eckl alone makes the sun shine :) But the opening programme with many interesting free courses and presentations for those in need of relaxation - starting at 10 am - brightens the spirit even more. She herself invites to an awareness- and heart meditation with healing chants and to a family constellation Q&A session, her colleagues indulge visitors with 20-minute face-lifting and shiatsu trial sessions! The likeable motto: relieve, laugh, get lighter!

Well, the CitySpotterGirl is not that into all of the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day fuss. And still, the turn of the year provides us with a perfect opportunity to reflect once again if we are still on top of things between career, nappies, partner and stardust. However, you could also define new goals and your personal ideal in a professional and compact way in the workshop of the coaching experts Barbara Straif & Irene Rojnik. They come up with creative motivation and visualisation techniques that support us in making our own visions come true. With practical timetables and to-do-lists!

Vienna Konzerthaus Backstage
Died-in-the-wool SpotterGirls use to poke their noses behind the scenes of world events anyhow. But the soloists’ room and the orchestra wardrobes of the Vienna Konzerthaus normally are a restricted area even to the cleverest rubbernecks (except they happen to be called Anna Netrebko). But this is not the case on 7 and 9 January! Because Vienna’s legendary music and architecture jewel opens its doors and provides spectacular insights into the current concert programme and diverse backstage areas. With a short visit of rehearsals and funny anecdotes. Top secret!

La Dolce Vita & Rome retrospective
What a lucky coincidence! Almost coinciding with the onset of winter and the icicle temperatures the first film museum retrospective of the year takes frostbite-ridden people directly to Rome! And sun-seeking cineastes are not only provided with “La Dolce Vita“ there – today at 3pm in the world-famous Fellini version of 1960 with Anita Ekberg and Marcello Mastroianni, by the way – but also with lots of amore, drama and contemporary history. Until 11 February around 40 movies of cult directors and acting legends reflect on the eternal city from 1945-1980. Grandioso!

Mama Africa – Circus of Senses
Of course, a circus show makes use of common clichés and exaggerations – in this case African and colonial outfits, grass skirts and wild make-up. But the pleasant difference compared to Andre Heller’s version from 2005 is the fact that the 40 gifted artists and dancers of the Mama Africa production “Khayelitsha – My Home“ are actually from Africa and do not only wear black make-up. For them, the world tour is an international career springboard, for the audience a buoyant and colourful African evening. Only today in Vienna!

Presentation "Mothers against terrorism"
The global war on terror and the increasing radicalisation by ISIS has been stretching the armed forces, politicians and common sense to its limits for years. Also in Europe more and more youngsters fall for the apocalyptic brainwash. “Mother schools against extremism” are an intelligent and peaceful counterstroke – developed by “Women without borders”. Today, Edit Schlaffer, founder of the organisation and world improver, explains how moms in Vienna and Pakistan can learn to detect radicalisation tendencies in their children in time and how to combat them.

Ménage à trois: Poetry & Jazz
The Austrian musicians and writers collective around singer and top jazz trumpet player Michaela Rabitsch invites to a threesome tonight. Be ready for an optically and programme-wise unusual mix of lyrics (by Poetry Slammer & lyric war horse Christian Schreibmüller), improvisational theatre and jazz. Until now, the CitySpotterGirl only knows their Africa- and Asia-inspired CD “Voyagers“, but if the show tonight carries only half as much passion, energy and emotions as the groovy jazz songs, it’ll definitely be beautiful!

Ferrari Zöchling
Colourful dashes of colour will jump at you in the newly opened store of young designer Romana Zöchling. That is, dashes of colour in the truest sense of the word, because the current collection is ornamented by details of largely blown-up felt pen drawings by Luna Ghigetti. And they look really cool on the jersey shirts, pullovers and pantaloons! The Hetzendorf-graduate’s idea to use digital pictures for the prints on her creations was inspired by the photographer Severin Koller whose photos landed, among others, on black-and-white silk shirts – chic and very unusual, just like everything in the shop!

The room alone is a challenge: The restaurant in the MAK is, as you know, a huge hall with a pompous ceiling. But after the renovation you go into raptures already when entering the restaurant. With its mix of elegant sixties style, amazing Frank fabrics and funny details the “Salonplafond“ looks almost cosy. And the cooking concept of the German TV celebrity chef Tim Mälzer seems to work as well. From breakfast to creatively filled sandwiches to an elaborate dinner – the pretty restaurant is a location for everyone at anytime – with museum view.
