"Heya Girls!"
Spring is approaching – vibrantly and very inspiringly – once again with true women’s power! In this case, of a historic nature. With the thrilling film retrospective “Austrian women in Hollywood” the cinema Metrokinokulturhaus commemorates those female artists who immigrated to the USA during the Nazi regime and had to gain a foothold under difficult conditions there. The Viennese actress (and inventress of radio technology!) Hedwig Kiesler, for example, mastered this challenge with flying colours: as Hedy Lamarr she started a top-class Hollywood career. The “most beautiful woman of Hollywood“ can be admired in the film revue classic “Ziegfeld Girl“ together with Judy Garland and Lana Turner. Also remarkable: the Austrian duo actresses Helene Thimig & Poldi Dur in “The Hitler Gang“. But also the works of celebrated export authors and exile choreographers are in the limelight – from Vicki Baum to Albertina Rasch. Strong women, strong programme! Until the end of March.

Wishing you a lovely week

Gallery tour in the first district
Spring is approaching and so the inner-city hiking day is even more fun! So, put on sturdy shoes and start walking: Almost 20 galleries in the 1st district open their doors between 4pm and 9pm and present latest art and vernissages – for example at bäckerstrasse4, where the object artist Heiri Häfliger makes thoughts vibrate with “knee jerk kinks” and much humour. Broaden your horizon at V & V with true eye-turner paper wickerworks by Janna Syvanoja or in the gallery Münz with premium spring jewellery. You’ll find a detailed walking map online.

Phoebe Violet
If you’re not that into stressful concert crowds and monster locations, the relaxed coffeehouse living room atmosphere at Supersense in Leopoldstadt is your place to be. Especially today! Because the talented singer, violinist and composer Phoebe Violet makes a guest appearance there and delights musicians’ hearts with her melodious melange of chanson, classic and pop! That sounds touching, theatrical and somehow like dancing (“I Dance”) and “Nostalgia” – which definitely has something to do with the young Viennese’s Latino roots. A live concert with muuuuuch emotion!

St. Patrick's Day in Vienna
These days the Empire State Building in New York is illuminated in green and Chicago's river is dyed green. This means: the Irish celebrate their National Day! In Vienna, however, the PaddysFest (Vienna’s legendary St. Patrick’s Day party at Ottakringer brewery) takes a break this year. We ladies can still show solidarity and party with the Irish: At The Brickmakers, the Paddy McMullan Band will spread good mood with Irish live music (8pm); at Charlie P’s they have green beer, a special menu with Irish oysters and the obligatory party hats. And, of course, Irish tunes!

Anselm Kiefer: Reality and illusion
He is one of the most famous German artists after WW2, regarded as a modernizer of history painting, and he works from an unusual scientific perspective: CitySpotterGirl’s darling Anselm Kiefer. The recently inaugurated exhibition displaying his most popular woodcuts and history-catastrophe-cycles is already worth a tip, but the best is yet to come! The superstar of the art scene will be live on the spot today and talk with quantum physician Anton Zeilinger about reality and illusion. The former loves science, the latter loves art! An unusually interesting pairing!

Carelessness does us good
And how good it is!!! Be it an unsteady walk through a snowstorm in a new pair of peep toes or a (too) risky confession of love – a pinch of spontaneity has never done any harm! Soul-revelation and self-knowledge also occupy an important place in Beatrice Floh’s soul collage workshop. Participants create a map of their own inner life, involving lots of creativity and fun. They get down to work with glue, scissors and their very personal dream shreds, colourful ideal images and intuitive puzzle pieces. According to the motto: Love of life kisses our weaker self!

Open House: Studios Pelzgasse 20
It’s getting better! There are ever more good reasons to make a detour to Vienna’s 15th district. After new discoveries such as the art-cook-pub “Palme 13” at Schwendermarkt or the flourishing creativity scene at Schneiderhof, the studios in Pelzgasse invite to an open house today. Eight artists take part. The painter Käthe Schönle displays intelligent-funny “friday drawings“, the object designer Sophie Dvorak presents imaginative cut-out paper landscapes. There’ll be plenty to see and to admire and as of 8pm, a party will be thrown in the studio März (just around the corner)!

Stylists flea market
They are at the source of fashion and know exactly which kind of “fur” trend-conscious fashion bunnies throw on at any occasion: the fashion directors and stylists of the local magazine scene. Florentina Welley, Clara Bilek & friends now joined forces and “fell out of love” and sorted out their private wardrobes. On the flea market today you’ll find loads of vintage pieces and designer accessories – from Prada and Stuart Weitzman to Zara and H&M – at rather low prices! An example? A timeless office suit by Strenesse for 200 (instead of 700 €) and Furla bags from 70 €.

Spark festival Am Himmel
Now, you’ll get a short tutoring minute in Austrian customs: On every first Sunday of Lent people here put up huge spark firs, cover them artfully with wood and burn them down collectively at dusk. The party, which puts an end to winter and normally cheers souls in Vorarlberg, is called “spark fire”. But this year, the spark craft from Wolfurt makes a guest appearance in Vienna and has built up a 14-metre (!) wooden tower at Am Himmel. The fire will be started around 7pm, for dinner they offer hearty cheese spaetzle and for the ears proper music. Tip: come by public transport!

Earth Hour 2016
One hour of darkness to save the world: On the occasion of “Earth Hour“ millions of people all around the world will turn off the lights today – in order to express their support for climate protection. In Vienna, enterprises such as A1 or Hofer participate, and the landmarks of all province capitals take part as well. Amongst others, the parliament, the town hall or the Schönbrunn castle will turn off their lights for one hour at exactly 9pm. Some luxury hotels and restaurants will also temporarily switch to candles as a source of light – finally we get the chance to be romantic in a politically correct way. Participate!

Ancient spring and Easter traditions
When the bells fly to Rome… city guide Gabriele Buchas takes us on a walk along one of Vienna’s oldest pilgrimage routes: from St. Stephen’s Cathedral to the famous Calvary in Hernals. On the way, you’ll learn a lot about popular and unknown Easter customs, ancient passion plays in Vienna, the traditional Easter market, the “Bamkraxler” and ratchet boys. The range of services on light healing is a broad one: from hard-core pranaism (just think of P.A. Straubinger’s controversial documentary) to acknowledged and modern forms of colour and light therapy. And those are now presented in Vienna for three days – by the Who is Who of international light “pioneers”, such as the doctor and bestseller author Jacob Liberman or the psychologist Karl Ryberg. Zoom! Architecture and cityscapes
The pyramids of Giza are moving ever closer to the city of Cairo, Indian slums are overgrowing Bombay and also in other places of the world, global cityscapes are changing at breakneck speed. Migration and social imbalance are two of the reasons, but urban and rural exodus, lack of space and climate catastrophes play a role as well. In the new exhibition “Zoom!” 13 architect-photographers provide up-to-date photo and video insights into urban development realities, like rooftop communities in Hong Kong and boring terraced house deserts in Tijuana.

Time management in the kitchen
Sorry, how does this work? You don’t cook every day, but you can have a fresh meal on the table anyway? In his 3-hour cooking class, the Italian chef Marco Serra shows (with plenty of humour and temper) how to cook in such an effective manner. Allegedly, three hours are enough to prepare tasty meals for a whole week – be it spicy pasta arrabiata, crunchy verdure or juicy grilled chicken breast. These dishes are ready to serve within 10 minutes and require only a few further easy steps such as throwing the noodles into the pot. Fantastico!

As always with explosive stuffings and salsas from red wine chicken to orange chilli. Brand new: burrito bowls (without wheat tortilla, but with lime rice), quesadillas and sandwiches.
