"Heya Girls!"
A bit more than one year ago, the huge flows of refugees started to reach Central Europe. And I was incredibly proud of our country – whereas politicians were frozen in terror, thousands of people organised help. They jumped over language barriers and foreign behaviour and showed what makes up human beings: Compassion! Of course, fear and overload were around as well, but unfortunately not even then did politicians step in. Instead, over time, the populist politicians gained the upper hand: Closed borders, everyone out, eyes shut. In the meantime, even our Minister of Integration (!) uninhibitedly postulates the detention of refugees on islands. World Refugee Day is observed on June 20. On this day, an App will be launched in Vienna. Under the motto “WelcomeOida“, it provides practical tips for newly arrived people in our town. And everyone can post his/her offer for refugees for that day. The Volkstheater raffles free tickets for refugees, chess is played in the café 7*stern, a picnic takes place in the Türkenschanzpark. There still are solidary people in Vienna. And sorry, populist politicians: There are many of us!

Wishing you a peaceful week

And another beautiful exhibition for friends of architecture! Every two years, the Mies van der Rohe award distinguishes Europe’s most innovative architecture projects. The exhibition presents 40 of the nominated buildings from all over Europe by means of plans, photos, videos, models and 1:1 construction elements. Traffic light couple rocks
Thank Conchita, some Viennese crossroads still show green light for same-sex traffic light couples. And they have become so iconic by now that the popular motif is also available as a merchandise product now. The hetero and homo couples and “Ampelpärchen rocks“ prints decorate cool T-shirts, cardigans, hoodies and gym bags, as well as coffee mugs or lanyards. Until Saturday, the nice traffic light couple accessories are available in a pop up store in the sixth district, the web shop www.ampelpaerchen.rocks will go online at the end of June.

Fesch’Markt
The Fesch’Markt in the Ottakringer brewery is definitely going to be very fesch again! What has become an institution and a dating network for creative heads by now, happily unites 200 designers and artists for three days. They offer fancy individual pieces from fashion to product design, affordable, but still very special, plus finest food stalls. A novelty: a willhaben stall where visitors may bargain hunt more than 500 finds such as lily porcelain, Lena Hoschek sunglasses or Lomo cameras, offered directly by users of the huge online market place.

Responsible economy
Interesting approaches to the economy of the future in a double lecture: First, TCM practitioner Leopold Spindelberger takes the human organism as an example of sustainability and recycling. In his talk, he describes some impressive examples and associates the wisdom of our body with a healthy economic system. The second lecture is given by GEA boss Heini Staudinger, who adopted sustainability as one of his priority principles – and who has already got around several barriers to set his Waldviertel enterprise on a successful course.

Vienna and its strong women
Vienna as the hometown of great daughters – this is the topic of today’s women’s walk. In her tour through the inner city, Daniela Haertel not only regards well-known ladies, such as Empress Sisi or the artist’s muse Alma Mahler-Werfel, but also those women with whose names we are not so familiar any more. For example Jetty Treffz, who spent some time in the city as the first wife of Johann Strauß II or Marie Louise von Österreich, Napoleon’s second wife. During the walk, you’ll discover places that were important for historic personalities.

Socks or pullovers, openwork or Norwegian design, whatever: “Knit in public“! For the 11th time, dyed-in-the-wool knitting fans all over the world – including Kiefer Sutherland and Sarah Jessica Parker – come together to pursue their hobby in public. Austria as well duly celebrates World Knit Day: from 1pm at the Kutschkermarkt or from 10am in Sonja’s Strickatelier, where even a knit performance and a guerrilla knitting project take place in order to wrap a lantern in knitting. Beginners are welcome, needles and wool are provided on site.

Vienna’s first British pop up offers a fancy mix of British fashion & food, plus funny events like stand-up comedies or tea parties. By the way: Tea lovers may sample higher living teas from Earl Grey to Ginger Kick and purchase some colourful Alison Appleton tea pots. Tiago Rodrigues: By heart
I guess for most of us it’s been quite a time since we last memorized sophisticated verses. A pity, actually! Today, at the end of the Vienna festival, you have the chance to train your memory – if you happen to be one of the ten chosen ones ;-) But let’s start from the beginning: The actor Tiago Rodrigues appears on stage with a box full of books and invites ten volunteers to have a seat in front of him. And then, Shakespeare’s sonnet No 30 is learned by heart – in a tremendously captivating manner. Join-in-theatre that has already delighted countless festival guests throughout Europe.

Susanne Bisovsky country trip
How nice, such a thing has never been there before! The designer Susanne Bisovsky invites to a chic picnic with country feeling today. The rough plan: Together with the fashion maker and a bunch of mannequins and musicians and equipped with plenty of food and blankets, the participants will board a public service bus towards Cobenzl and exultantly ascend the Viennese mountains. During the bus trip they’ll chat and sing (as long as the driver accepts it!). In the subsequent picnic in the country everyone can take out her own camera to capture the idyllic scenery. Or just enjoy being part of a fancy fashion event.

Pranzo della Domenica
Sunday lunch that makes you happy for sure: In the presence of his guests, the young Italian culinary artist Andrea Cipriano is going to prepare loads of delicacies today. And then, the Sunday lunch is celebrated the Italian way at Casa Caria – with cheerful people eating for hours while chatting animatedly and in an easy-going manner long into the day! The 5-course-menu includes for example rosemary-flavoured swordfish, creamy basil risotto, tender squid and a bergamot orange-lemon-olive-oil curd with mulberry granità. And “Caffe Delizia“ from Napoli, of course. What a sunday feast!

Bicycle picnic
Pretty British: Chaps, chapettes and other nostalgia addicts are turning the Kaiserwiese in front of the Giant Ferris Wheel into a huge, stylish picnic lawn today. First, elegantly dressed people – in tweed or in a summer dress - cycle from the city to the lawn and then they have a picnic there. Those who don’t bring along a basket will also be perfectly provided with culinary delights. Background music consists of classical Charleston and retro-modern Lindy Hop. The highlight of the event is the first Brompton Urban Challenge in Vienna, a funny treasure hunt throughout the city. Awesome: supervised bicycle parking!

Carousel – Room cinema
Arthur Schnitzler’s “La Ronde” has already been performed countless times on Viennese theatre stages, now the historic matter is given completely new perspectives. For her project “carousel”, the artist and filmmaker Gerda Leopold produced “La Ronde” as a contemporary-modern room movie. Her innovative first fictional film was filmed with a multi helmet camera, worn in turns by the protagonists – with 5 cameras simultaneously. This way, it was possible to create all-around pictures presented to the audience on all four walls and on the ceiling of the projection room. A completely new cinema experience!

Mela feat. Christian Bakanic
The classic cellist and singer/songwriter Mela unites classic, soul and jazz in a masterful, dreamy and playful way in her songs. Normally, she acts as a one-woman-band on stage and her soul voice and the soft cello sounds always cause pleasant gooseflesh feeling. Tonight, Mela performs with the accordionist Christian Bakanic from Burgenland, the two of them virtuously combine the clarity of Baroque with the spontaneity of jazz and the passion of tango with the catchy tunes of soul pop. That simply has to be good, listen here!

Moroccan week
Well, there won’t be any camels, but everything else that makes Vienna a bit like Marrakesh will be served up during the Moroccan week. The square in front of the MuseumsQuartier turns into a bazaar where gorgeous kaftans as well as argan oil, tableware, lamps and jewellery are offered for sale. A Moroccan orchestra with belly dancers provides an Oriental sound carpet. And we wouldn’t be talking about the Kingdom of Morocco if there were no cooling mint tea and delicacies such as couscous or caramelized figs of the nearby “Aux Gazelles“.

Ingrid Brodnig “Hate in the Internet“
Reading the hate posts on the Facebook page of FPÖ boss Strache (before they are deleted), is enough to give you the creeps. After attacking Alexander Van der Bellen, Strache fans recently also threatened Christian Kern with murder. Elsewhere, feelings run high as well, be it vegans vs. carnivores or vaccination opponents vs. vaccination advocates, the tone in the Internet is getting ever more rude. But how can we best protect ourselves against the digital culture of hate? The author Ingrid Brodnig presents strategies against propaganda, mobbing and lies today.

Tomorrow - Travel the world of solutions
The time has come to put an end to the fear of the imminent global collapse and to act! This is was the French actress Melanie Laurent (Inglorious Bastards) and the activist Cyril Dion had in mind when they set out with their film team to seek solutions all over the world. And they discovered an incredible recycling system, parallel currencies to boost the local economy and flourishing permacultures that could feed all of us. An excellent film and a must-see - if only because of the countless smart ideas. Afterwards: “Tomorrow Talk“ with the climate expert Helga Kromp-Kolb!

Now it’s time to dive deep into the box of kitsch! Hang around at the Danube beach and pretend to be in Bella Italia – during the iconic Schlager Night at the Old Danube. This is without doubt the hottest shop the CitySpotterGirl has ever entered! The Chili-Werkstatt has been the first address for fans of wild spices since April. A colour coding system helps customers to choose the right pepper; the small shop offers any variety from mild to hellishly hot. The hotteners, such as BBQ sauces, spices, mustard and spicy snacks come from all over the world. Extra tempting: the range of fresh chilli, grown at a special chilli farm in Vienna. By the way: You’d better wash it down with vodka than with water, or just pour oil into the throat.
