"Heya Girls!"
Of course: When a play about insanely brilliant women is performed in Vienna, I become curious. Especially when Virginia Woolf is one of them. What would I do without her? Always when things are going awry in my life, I read “Orlando“ – and everything is fine again. It’s hard to believe that Woolf, one of the greatest writers of Modern Age, suffered from psychosis throughout her life and drowned herself in a river in 1941. Camille Claudel was another brilliant woman. The gifted sculptress should have been a boy, was ignored by her mum and committed to a mental hospital later on. And Clara Immerwahr, women’s rights defender and the first female graduate chemist in Germany, shot herself with her husband’s gun, the poison gas scientist Fritz Haber, when she couldn’t stand his “co-killing” during WW I any more. They all went mad because they wanted to live up their talents, their freedom and their self-determination one hundred years ago. They all are one of the reasons why “insanely brilliant woman” is a compliment today! Off to the theatre!

Flowers & Tables
Representing still objects such as flowers or fruits has been a tradition in art since antique times. At the vernissage today, however, art fans may marvel at “still lifes” of present times. Photo artist Annet van der Voort, who studied in Antwerp and Vienna and whose prints have already decorated international museums already for a long time, presents wonderful flower still lifes of the series “Vanitas and Tulipa“. They remind us of the Garden of Eden; funnily enough, contain small insects and are simply beautiful! Her colleague Pawel Zak instead focuses on clean chic, grapes, mussels and water glasses. Opening today.

Super bargains at modus vivendi
There is news in the house of the two Austro designers Monika Bacher and Charlotte Jakoubek, also known as “modus vivendi“ to fashion insiders: After a quarter of a century they want to go back to the roots and only offer a minimized highlight collection of basics and knitwear in the future. That’s why prices of loads of collection pieces, remaining stock and accessories are now cut down rigorously! Amazing silk dresses, baggy trousers and wool skirts – buy two pieces and get a 50 % discount. And when you buy three or more items between February 25 and 27 prices are haggled over like at a bazaar.

Vienna Swing Sisters: In the Mood!
Lots of wit, a touch of kitsch and evilness – that’s what has made the act of the three powerful-voiced Vienna Swing Sisters legendary for years. Today Eva Hinterreithner, Lisa Jakob and Susanne Fanny Rader once again slip into the roles of the famous “Andrew Sisters“ from Minneapolis – style-wise as well as music-wise. They scored nine gold discs and loads of chart hits in the 1940s and 50s. Together with the Lungau Bigband the voice pistols of today perform lively highlights from Glenn Miller to Artie Shaw. Keep swinging, ladies!

Theme night: We found a bank
Yes, money rules the world. But in contrast to commercial bank conglomerates this can also be done in an ethically correct and people-oriented way now! The “Common Good Bank” has existed since 2010 and, as the name suggests, focuses on common good instead of profit-making, but of course the bank also manages saving deposits, credits and payments. Everyone can join and become a legal shareholder for 200€. How does that work? Vera Besse from the initiative Growth and Change, who has advocated for sustainable economic models and solidary-ecological solutions for years, will explain it today. Interesting!

FrancoFair 2.0
Okay, the CitySpotterGirl is slightly food-minded at the moment and when hearing France she automatically thinks of Paul Bocuse’s chervil soup. But epicurean delights are not at the centre of the 2nd francophone art fair. French and Francophile craftspeople and artists rather present and sell cool photos, pottery, drawings and textiles with that certain „je ne sais quoi“ on February 19 and 20. So you may for example buy flowery-paradisiac oil paintings by Marie Malherbe and funny ear-bags by Barbara Graf. Party time from 9pm! And, of course, they have food as well ;-)

Collectors and growers from different countries present their orchids and Tillandsias for one week. Besides the well-known varieties such as Phalaenopsis and Cattleya rare varieties from all over the world are to be found as well. A tribute to Bertha von Suttner
She was courageous, intelligent, open-minded and already advocated for equality and a modern Europe in the 19th century. We’re talking about the Austro pacifist and writer Bertha von Suttner who was the first women ever to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. Now her visionary texts and timeless thoughts are brought back to life. Namely, by the actress and play initiator Susanne Eisenkolb, who slips into the role of the woman of the century for one evening and recites extracts of her novels, diaries and letters. Passionate and with music!

International tourist guide day
Very nice: guided tours are for free today! The reason is the international tourist guide day on which city guides work for free. The focus will be on the Natural History Museum this year: The guides provide participants with secret insights into the building history, different departments and curiosities of the historic house. Explore the world’s largest public collection of meteorites or the daring “Novara” world circumnavigation expedition by the k.u.k. military navy. Of course, you may also have a look at the Stone Age section with Venus of Willendorf. Plus: interesting presentations. Everything for free!

Mindfulness seems to be one of the most important key words in today’s world. In fact, a word that no one aiming at a stress-free and fulfilled life can ignore. Today, the mindfulness expert Thomas Höfer explains how you manage to incorporate this healthy awareness into your own life – and this event is not taking place in some yoga centre, but in the chic Grand Hotel as part of the “Philosophical evening” (for free!). Alexandra Prinz: Adventure Golan
A thrilling war report of a nurse: Alexandra Prinz spent half a year with the Armed Forces in a crisis region that most of us only know from the news. Her book “Abenteuer Golan”, which she presents today, is an unusual open diary about her time in a military camp in Syria. In times of refugee crisis the book provides an interesting insight into the backgrounds of the Syrian military daily routine where women are an absolute minority and handling weapons is part of everyday life. It’s only Life
Broadway-Feeling in the venerable Cafe Prückel: In the café’s function cellar there’s actually taking place a musical premiere tonight. The prize-winning musical revue “It’s only Life“, which is performed for the first time in Austria tonight, was written by the multiple award-winning Broadway hit producer John Bucchino, who also composed for Liza Minnelli and Art Garfunkel. And so, the rousing songs and ballads that the audience is about to hear today are also full of love and yearning, disappointment and sacrifice. Great feelings on a small, cosy stage!

Open House at Stadtschrift
Birgit Ecker and Roland Hörmann, the two rescuers of the Viennese city letters, have now found a home for part of their lettering stock: a small show room in the sixth district where 12 selected storefront beauties are displayed as of now. Including a “Liköre” sign from Meidling of the 40s or a “Café” sign from 1918 – which is, by the way, the oldest jewel of the collection. Of course, visitors will also learn interesting background stories and typography anecdotes. Opening festivity today! Now it’s time to conquer the oceans in a musical manner! As part of the international accordion festival two female top accordion combos make a guest appearance in Vienna tonight. Sometimes you come across restaurants that have just opened and already seem like they have always existed. Obviously in the right place at the right time. Brevis is one of them: the new brasserie near the Karmeliterchurch looks pretty and serves Mediterranean food. Particularly nice at lunchtime: choose two or three from a wide range of dishes and enjoy them at a (low) menu price. For example, tasty chicken ragout fin with Brussels sprouts and a polenta slice. All ingredients come from befriended producers – and the pasta from Finkensteiner, Austria’s oldest noodle manufacturer :-)
