"Heya Girls!"
Wednesdays are red-letter days in the calendars of all confectioneries in Vienna. This is the day when your favourite newsletter is produced, in other words: The cake sale in town is skyrocketing abruptly. The stress of our editorial team virtually keeps alive a whole profession. This week a man, who will reproach us for nibbling dementia and fidgeting at low revs, is coming to Vienna. Unfortunately, he is right. Patric Heinzmann is a nutritionist, in fact the funniest between Scheibbs and Nebraska. He devotes himself to genes, especially to the “going too often to the fridge”-gene. In his new lecture show “Eating allowed” he explains the functions of the body, makes organs communicate with each other via speech bubbles and addresses the eternal conflict between head and belly. He bites his way through trends, substitute religions, designer food and Paleo diet and chews on intolerances. I already see it coming: goodbye, cosy Wednesday calories! Sigh!

Wishing you a healthy week

SoftMachine: XiaoKe X ZiHan
Chinese cultural history, today in terms of dance: in his performance cycle SoftMachine, the successful choreographer and dancer Choy Ka Fai has documented contemporary dance in Asia since 2012. In today’s performance he does away with clichés about Asian dance – a female and a male dancer from Taiwan experiment with the symbolic tendencies of Chinese dance styles. And since the performance is accompanied with films and China sound, the audience is taken on a fascinating journey through Chinese history. First performance in Europe!

Repair for free: Fix It!
The toaster suddenly burns each piece coal-black, the blender doesn’t run at full speed any more and the hairdryer is on its last legs? That’s annoying, but such defects can often be easily corrected – if we only knew how! On the Wien Energie Fix It Day experts repair everything that calls itself an electric appliance and deserves a second chance. All repairs are free of charge, but each person may only bring along one “patient”. Registration for a fixed appointment is required. And in case that’s too short-dated for you: The next Fix It Day takes place on March 17.

Citrus fruits delivery from Southern Italy
An insider’s tip for gourmets and curiosity seekers: Casa Caria is currently selling rare citrus fruits! Bergamots, bitter oranges, Tarocco blood oranges, the rare lemon variety limone cidrato with its thick peel and an enormously sweet orange variety from southern Italy called “arance martisi” were freshly delivered from Calabria to the 7th district. The bergamot (which combines qualities of bitter orange and citrons) for example is a much sought-after rarity especially for marmalade fans. The fresh vitamin bombs can be tasted and purchased while supplies last!

Hidano Shuichi & Taiko-Masters
Somehow, Vienna is going Asian this week! Not only a Chinese performance and a Tibetan party are taking place, but also a Japanese drumming concert. And a great one! Hidano Shuichi, invited to Vienna for the free concert tonight by the Japanese embassy, is a real superstar and ranks among the best Taiko drummers in Japan. When he and the other Taiko masters of his ensemble swing their drumsticks with full use of physical strength, there’ll be hell to pay! They drum traditional Japanese sounds as well as modern beats. Bang ;-)

Tibetan New Year
The wooden sheep year is over, welcome to the fire monkey year! Today the Tibetan year No 2143 begins. In Tibet the years are not only attributed to East Asian zodiac signs, but also to the 5 elements. “Losar”, Tibetan New Year’s Eve, is the most important holiday in Tibet and this event is also celebrated in due style with chants and burning incense in the Don Bosco House Vienna today. Hubert von Goisern moderates the programme, visitors are provided with everything that makes up a good Tibetan party: traditional dance, food, singing and a festive incense ceremony.

Common Good Festival 2016
A new economic model which focuses no longer on the accumulation of monetary capital but rather on the well-being of all people and their environment - this is the idea the movement “Economy for the Common Good” are concerned with. At the Common Good festivity taking place in the Volkstheater today visionaries from business, politics and culture, such as Ha Vinh Tho, head of the “Centre for Gross National Happiness Bhutan” (yes, such a thing does actually exist!) or the Indian Alternative Nobel prize laureate Vandana Shiva, take the floor. Plus concerts and a cabaret with Hader!

One Billion Rising
Worldwide one out of three women is beaten or violated in the course of her life. That sums up to the unbelievable number of one billion women. In order to take a stance against this violence, the American feminist Eve Ensler converted Valentine’s Day to V-Day. For years, she has been calling for “One Billion Rising”: in about 200 countries hundreds of thousands of people leave their workplace or house at the same time to dance together in the streets. People will also dance in Vienna today - at the parliament. And afterwards, the crowd shakes at the after party at Tanzquartier!

Free Hop on Hop off-Bus tour
There are certain things a Viennese woman simply wouldn’t do. For example touring through the city in a yellow-green tourist hop on hop off bus. Although it is actually quite fun to play tourist in your own city. On Valentine’s Day, couples that want to snuggle up in the double-decker bus, may do so for free. You just have to whisper the password “love” to the bus driver – and yet you enjoy your ride through Vienna! Not for free, but equally fine: Two special guided tours in the Albertina are dedicated to love today. For more tips for lovers just have a look at the portal!

Experience female spirituality
A pleasant excursion into the female spiritual world: In today’s workshop, Soul Sisters founder Irene Fellner talks about the origins and the history of the old Yogini tradition with its wonderful mythology of goddesses and their spiritual backgrounds. A very interesting fact for example is how “female” spiritual concepts differ from “male” concepts. In sensation exercises participants may experiment with the boundary between body and soul themselves. And then, the energy from the spiritual world will hopefully flow into everyday life ;-)

Sandra Gilles in the MQ-Shop
If we do take a beauty rest, then we want to do it in beautiful clothes! The designer Sandra Gilles already provided us with everything we need for premium resting once. Until 2012 the French woman produced the loveliest nightwear in town in Lindengasse. Then she decided to immigrate to Corsica – and left us nightwear-less behind. Now she is back in Vienna and searches for a new store. Luckily, we don’t need to wait until she makes a find, since she is currently a guest in the MQ shop with her “Nuit Blanche” collection. Sweet pyjamas, cuddly home wear and kimonos!

Scheiss ins Beth das kracht
Yes, the orthographically interesting title (“Shit in your bed and make it burst”) already implies that this is going to be somewhat obscene. And the responsible is none other than our beloved Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who loved not only to compose good music but also to text – sometimes quite coarsely. Extracts of the composer’s infamous correspondence as well as parts of his astonishing memoirs are performed at L.E.O. today, contrasted with highly sophisticated Mozart chants from Don Giovanni to Cosi fan tutte. A pretty dared mix, but a good one!

David Tavcar: Surfaces
We’ll have to remember this name! David Tavcar is only in his mid 20s and still studying Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts, but he already masterfully combines traditional handicraft methods with experimental, unconventional techniques. As of today, the Slovenia-born artist presents his textile designs and porcelain and metal objects at stilwerk. It’s interesting to see how he experiments with unusual perspectives – for example, the stepped terrace of the Adolf Loos house was the source of inspiration for a honey pot. And his fabrics make you grin at once.

Sebastian Pecznik meets Piazzolla
This makes your heart melt! When the young guitarist Sebastian Pecznik gently touches the strings – that’s acoustic food for our soul. Tonight, the charismatic Argentinian with Polish roots performs in Vienna for the first time. For this occasion he selected works of the great master Piazzolla and some of his self-penned compositions. Between the songs, he also reveals personal stories about the origin of his music, which can be classified somewhere between tango, jazz and classic guitar. Now we just need a glass of red wine, sunset and the sound of the sea.

Skreek – A Comic Revolution
Comic on a theatre stage, this has never existed before in this form: in a fascinating mix of film, comic and theatre the drawn hero of the play “Skreek”, which is performed for the first time tonight, is brought to life. Or rather, his daily life is sketched out by his creator. The “real” actor is playing directly behind the screen, the audience experiences the hustle and bustle via video projection. And, of course, the comic figure Jean-Luck develops his own fantasies and wishes and finally wants to escape from the two-dimensional world.

L’Orient
Marietta and Mustapha have been bringing Oriental flair to a silent alley in the second district for some time. Until now, they only cooked Moroccan dishes on pre-order, but as of Friday the two of them enlarge their 1001 Nights empire and also sell wonderful interior. The peekaboo lamps conjure points of light on the walls, the shelves are filled with pretty tea glasses, black-and-white ringed tableware, trays with ornament patterns and colourful Berber baskets. They also have enough space for carpets and mosaic tables, which, by the way, are available for 20% off at the opening on Friday. Regular opening hours as of Monday!

Cafe zur rezeption
The “Grätzlhotel“ is a cool project, which turns empty shops in unusual hotel suits. There are already 7 of them around the Karameliter market – and recently a café, which also serves as reception, was opened there. However, you do not notice the reception at all, since the restaurant in calling distance of the market has already become a meeting point for everyone in the district: funny furnishings, cosy and delicious food. Especially the breakfast variations are awesome – even the (very low!) prices. Baked rice pudding and unusual “fist noodles” are on the menu as well. And on Thursdays they bake Buchteln. Very very smart!
