"Heya Girls!"
Getting older can be a strange thing. I for one, have been the same age as Demi Moore all my life. Until she met Ashton Kutcher. Since then, she is either three or five years younger than me. When I was recently asked my age at the authorities, I briefly considered getting myself a toyboy. But that’s too stressful for me. Moreover, I already have a remedy for age rings and eye wrinkles: I am childish. And as of Saturday, I can finally live it up again. I am going to do what normally only children are allowed to do at IKEA – I'll jump into a pool full of balls. The fact that this “swimming pool” is a project of the Vienna Festival serves as a perfect cover. The Belgian-French group of artists “France Distraction“ installs a contemporary version of an ancient thermal bath in the Künstlerhaus and has inscribed 25,000 black balls with a Stoic wisdom. Plunge into philosophy, drift in the flow of western thought, meet people at the edge of the pool, splash around – and belly-flop into the pool! That’s damn intellectual and has strong rejuvenating effects. Promise!

MQ summer opening
Cold Sophia and the other ice saints aside - summer is approaching! And so, the start of the cosy season in the MuseumsQuartier is properly celebrated. This means free entry to all (!) museums and cultural institutions as of 5 pm with special guided tours and many other highlights! The outdoor programme rocks as well: from 7 pm “A Life A Song A Cigarette“ will fill the main court with melancholic sounds, later “Ash My Love + BulBul“ will provide blues-punk rock’n’roll. Plus: a boat race in the water basin and an art flea market.

 Erro / Galerie Ernst Hilger
Erró
Colourful, wild, loud – and very trendy. The Tate Modern recently exhibited his work, as well as the Grand Palais and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and as of today he is also presented in Vienna: Gudmundur Gudmundsson, a.k.a. Erró. The Icelander brought back pop to painting and virtuously dashes from Picasso to Disney, unleashing the flood of pictures of our times on the audience in a compact way. In Icelandic Er ro means “it’s getting silent again”. Well, definitely not, that’s for sure ;-) The artist will be at the vernissage at gallery Hilger tonight!

upstyle@gabarage
This is how stylish slow fashion works! The socially committed upcycling enterprise gabarage is exploring new avenues and has now added a fashion line to their tried and tested “make new from old” product range. This evening, they show the different forms “upstyling” can take for the first time in the recently established showroom in the Schleifmühl district. For example fancy pieces that are still suitable for everyday use, made from sorted-out fabrics and old clothes, designed by the young local designer Leni Landsgesell. Or couture from pimped robes to eccentric Life Ball outfits by designer duo “Ornalla-Mutti-Couture“. Super!

Interactive crime novel “Hängende Spitze“
This time, “Friday the 13th” provides us with real thrill instead of movie horror or superstitious misfortunes: In the new and interactive e-book crime novel “Hängende Spitze“ readers can co-create the plot via their mobile phones and influence the ongoing investigations. For example by giving tips to the policemen via WhatsApp, or by following the suspect on Instagram. As of today, Lukas Pellmann will read each Friday from a new part of his 5 crime novels. The plot leads the two investigators and their followers from the real world into the depths of Viennese amateur football.

Guideline for happy cats
This tip is not the CitySpotterGirl’s fault. Lola, the editors’ cat, cleverly manoeuvred it into the newsletter (by manipulating the weather and so already the third pleasant appointment on that day was cancelled at short notice!). Anyhow: The association “Tierschutz macht Schule“ presents its folder “Guideline for happy cats“ in the restaurant Tirolergarten at the zoo today. The animal behavioural therapist Dr. Cordula König explains what cat-friendly living looks like and what else you have to be aware of when it comes to our purring friends. Questions welcome!

Song Contest Viewing with live comments
This is a potential hit even for Song Contest objectors! No matter how well Zoe is doing tonight, we surely want to know a thing or two about it. The cabaret artist Caroline Athanasiadis, the Greek-Austrian half of the witty Kernölamazonen, will anchor the event in an uninhibitedly cheeky way and in unreserved interaction with the audience. So, the long show evening will definitely not be boring! Luckily, Zoe had revealed her 5 favourite books to the CitySpotterGirl before that hype started! Our cute Song Contest hope will probably have little time to read in the near future ;-)

We Bandits Happy Pop Up
The fashion pieces, which We Bandits owner Sophie Pollak brings home from her trend scouting journeys, are all pretty and super hip. The taste-conscious fashion fairy regularly ends up in Korea, just as a few weeks ago. The shipment from East Asia has just arrived; we may look forward to funny-colourful skirts, simple jumpsuits and casual blouses – limited to just a few pieces. And they are available in a two-day-pop-up in the attic of the 25hours Hotel, with views of the city, DJ sounds and drinks. Very stylish – not only the fashion rarities!

Grinberg training to combat back pain
Is your back aching again? A soft back training according to the Grinberg method might relieve the ever-recurring torture. Since Grinberg actually gets to the bottom of the pain, it mostly brings sustainable improvements. The aim is not to train the body like a machine, but to discover one’s own body, to become more aware of oneself and release blockades and strain through exercises. The Grinberg practitioner Veronika Fiegl offers a free test training today, the course starts on June 11.

History of the handshake at Belvedere
In the course of our lives, we do it an estimated 15,000 times, a handshake is probably the most common way of greeting in everyday life. Already in pre-Christian cultures, handshaking was a sign of peace and of the conclusion of deals. And it was often eternalized in art – the paintings in the Belvedere also show many, often famous, hands that touch each other. The guided tour in the Upper Belvedere today traces a rite that means much more than we often suspect: from baroque allegories up to the historic handshake at the signing of the Independence Treaty in May 1955.

The location is gorgeous, the selection huge: Austria’s largest exhibition of citrus and other exotic species is taking place in the marvellous Orangery of the Schönbrunn Palace from May 13-16. For their great choice of citrus rarities for indoors and outdoors the Citrus Days have long become an insider tip among plant lovers who are interested in an exotic flair. Medieval Festival in the Bohemian Prater
Caution: Spoiler! Jon Snow is alive. The dyed-in-the-wool Game of Thrones community has known it for a long time anyway ;-) Good medieval fantasy away from the TV sofa is provided in the Bohemian Prater today, by the way. For just a minor toll, you can go on a time travel there: fighting knights, dancing witches and jugglers are bustling about the quirky old amusement park, accompanied by “Narrengold“ sounds. Maybe you’ll find an original accessory for the next GoT viewing at the market – for feast day overindulgence there's pigling!

Disco barbecue
It was only recently that we were happy about the beginning of spring, and now we are already in the middle of the barbecue season! The Prater will now smell of charcoal, steaks, barbecue sausages and pork chop every Monday: The nice Salettl Vivus fires up a disco barbecue on its cosy terrace! In addition to the popular specialities (all of them from organic farms, by the way) they’ll also serve summer cocktails and, as the name suggests, cool disco beats! A live DJ on the turntables makes sure that the atmosphere won’t cool down after sunset!

Roses / Dakh Daughters Band
Provocative, political and full of women’s power: In 2013, the Ukrainian Dakh Daughters gained international attention with their performance at the disputed Maidan square in Kiev. The white-painted faces and the freaky expression of the powerful combo reminds of the Tiger Lillies – rocky, loud, scurrile and with an incredible drive. They satirically play with Ukrainian identity and sing about the borderland of an empire, about the post-Soviet tragedy or about burning industrial areas. Tonight live at MQ, listen here! And because of the lyrics: There’ll be German surtitles ;-)

Elfenkönig
Normally, Monika Sattler works in the small village of Petzenkirchen. As of today, you can also find her young label in Vienna. The creative fashion designer takes old trouser pockets, boiled wool remnants, an apron seam and Maya the Bee bed linen and patches up funny new skirts out of the separate parts. You can tell with each piece (each one a unicum!) what it’s made from. Chic and original – and real eye-turners. The designer’s product range also includes shirts and jackets. Ethnocineca 2016
A cinematic glance towards faraway worlds! The film festival Ethnocineca presents 61 ethnographic and documentary films from all over the world, for six days in the Votiv and De France cinema. And those are by no means dull films, but incredibly close to life, touching and evocative. Today, for example, cineastes travel to Teheran: In “Fest of Duty“, Firouzeh Khosrovani accompanies two 9-year-old girls who are informed about their religious duties at the Fest of Duty. “El Legado“ is about the dreams of two women in a South Chilean village.

When light and noise make us sick
In 1879, Thomas Alva Edison invented the light bulb and thus, turned night into day. But what happens when it’s not getting dark any more? Unfortunately, our artificially created noise and light surroundings can affect our health. Hans-Peter Hutter, an expert in environmental medicine of the Medical University of Vienna explains how our body reacts to environmental influences – and why noise and light pollution are often underestimated. He’ll also offer advice on how to protect oneself against too much noise and light, in order to calm down and to relax properly.

retyred
Truly funky furniture! Eight years ago, the Austrian wind and kitesurfing champion Bernie Kudernatsch emigrated to Australia. He came back as a designer. Today he presents his unusual furniture for the first time in Austria in Monica Weinzettl’s Kastlwerkstatt. The ingenious thing about it: all design pieces are made from old tyres! The combination of precious wood and long-living rubber (Teak & Tyre) is especially suitable for outdoor furniture. The pieces are handmade, sustainable and unique. Have a look and get one today from 5 to 9 pm. Cool!

Gala dinner with Jane Goodall
Everyone should have heard this woman at least once! The chimpanzee researcher Jane Goodall is one of the most fascinating speakers in the world and a brilliant fighter for environmental projects and nature. Today, you can meet her in person in Vienna. Before the British behavioural scientist talks, the Vienna Sängerknaben and Sona MacDonald perform world music. And after the presentation, a gala dinner in honour of Ms Goodall takes place in the Augarten. The proceeds of the evening will be donated to education projects in Uganda. If you pay enough, you might even sit at Jane's table and have a chat with her!

Klara Fruchtsennerei
At first glance, Vienna’s first “yogurteria” seems like the umpteenth bright, friendly ice cream shop. But instead of ice cream the display case is filled with sweet Alpine dairy products, such as fruit yogurt or curd cheese cream. Everything is made from regional organic milk (even the super-creamy “Greek” yogurt!), without additives, produced in the 3rd district. You can start spooning up right away on cosy benches or get a screw cap cup for take away. They also have semolina pudding and rice pudding – I have rarely had such a good one as the poppy seeds and white chocolate variation. Wonderful creamy soul food!

Habibi & Hawara
The idea behind this restaurant is so beautiful that we have to write about it anyway. Under the supervision of experienced restaurateurs, refugees are running a restaurant together with Viennese people since last week. But reality has even exceeded the idea! The innovatively furnished Habibi turned into a very likeable restaurant with simply delicious food. At lunchtime they serve quick dishes, on the evenings only menus for 2: plates full of Oriental and Austrian (organic) specialities. Fatour, shish, goulash and the best hummus in town. Arabian hospitality meets Viennese snide humour. Brilliant combination!
