"Heya Girls!"
“This exhibition won’t make you any happier”, Stefan Sagmeister, Austria’s most successful graphic export explains right at the beginning of his “Happy Show” in the MAK. And he lies through his teeth! To tell the truth, I’ve already been there three times, the show has enormous heart-leaping potential. After 10 years of investigation into happiness the passionate globetrotter has scribbled lots of true and touching comments on the walls and packed them into videos, installations and posters. “Step up to it“, he recommends quite interactively when your self-confidence is completely broken up. Or: “Complaining is silly, either act or forget“ – which gently brings us back to earth in times of personal or professional everyday struggles. In the exhibition we may also donate money, chew happiness chewing gums, ride a bike and flirt at the toilet – yes, even there you’ll find Sagmeister’s wisdoms. His conclusion: Happiness can be trained. The CitySpotterGirl’s conclusion: go there and go there again! Especially in times like these.

Wishing you a lovely week

 Rani Bageria
Archive Sale Rani Bageria & DMMJK
Since we have great demands on our wallets in the Advent season anyway, here another double sale for fashionistas: up to 70% off on pieces of last year’s collections of two interesting labels in the AFA Offspace! Rani Bageria gets the inspiration for her flashy knits from metropolis such as Paris or Tokyo, and she loves to work with old architecture and fabric patterns. Very hip: her elaborately tailored, figure hugging blazers. The creative Viennese fashion collective Dennis, Martha, Marcy, Jessica & Kevin, on the other hand, loves wild patterns, DMMJK-designs are always pure eyecatchers. Cool!

Meet your neighbours
Do not wonder if various doors in the Stuwer and Nordbahn district and in Zwischenbrücken are open today and groups of people are gathering in the front gardens. Neighbours are inviting neighbours there: to get to know each other, to chat and to “pre-drink” – so bring your own cup! A very likeable way of socialising also takes place in the 6th district today. As part of the action “Dogether”, people have the chance to spend a few hours with refugees living in Vienna, in a straightforward and moderated way. Singles, couples and groups of 4 will get acquainted. Register quickly! Because talking connects :-)

Loos Day
The “house without eyebrows” at the Michaelerplatz, the Cafe Museum, the American Bar – the architect Adolf Loos has left many marks in Vienna. On the occasion of his 145th birthday the Hofmobiliendepot celebrates “Loos Day” today. Besides a special guided tour through the Loos furniture collection there’ll also be a lecture titled “Stories about living” in which curator Eva B. Ottillinger compares the currently omnipresent Josef Frank (see also Tuesday) with Adolf Loos’ living ideas. The expert on Viennese Modernism presents works by the two designers of the 20th century.

Of course with many newcomers, but also with renowned artists, such as painter Ivica Capan from the gallery Knoll or “Wursthaberer“ Patrick Baumüller with a straw spider. Secret signs in Stubenviertel
Many houses in town are older than they look and some of them carry hints to mysterious incidents in their “annual rings”. Unknown writings, symbols, objects, sculptures and construction types are to be found especially in the former medieval “Stubenviertel”. Decoding these “messages” from ancient times, making the houses tell their stories, discovering old lanes and unexpected courts can end in a lovely time travel. Discover the secret signs on foot today with Ursula Schwarz!

Scurrile and funny stuff in the granny-oasis! Since last summer the 18 grandmas and grandpas of the “Vollpension” bless “large little children”, who prefer it the cosy and homey way, on a permanent basis. And in Advent their home-baked cakes, vanilla crescents and punch smell twice as nice! Also the odd advent programme has no equal: Today, “Home alone” invites to a communal slippers-movie-night with cookies, punch and popcorn. Bill sings Piaf
Already in her early years as an actress and singer Maria Bill fell for Edith Piaf’s chansons. She knows the “Spatz aus Paris“ almost as well as herself and was rewarded for her Piaf performances several times. After 30 years she still sings hits such as “La vie en rose“ with unchecked passion. Today she enchants the audience in the Konzerthaus with her touching Piaf interpretations – dressed in black, with bright red lips, smoky voice and French charm. As another equally charming Francophile side act, young star Zoë will also whisper a few songs.

Völlig Weih-Um-Nachtet!
Well, there is this fairy tale of the peaceful-perfect Christmas party with stress-free gift shopping, harmonic family get-together and snow-flaked relaxation. But neither we Viennese nor singer Elena Schreiber and her theatre colleague Robert Kolar from the opera theatre L.E.O. believe in that story. They are honest and are looking forward to an entertaining and trenchant evening of Christmas songs and anecdotes, which immediately makes vanish even the last little bit of festive-season-despair. With music from Mozart to Georg Kreisler and sketches by Loriot.

Josef Frank: Against Design
Despite of his importance as an architect and designer, Josef Frank is still little known in our country. This is now changing tremendously! Since November the furniture of the textile master and architecture whizz kid are available in a pop up (CitySpotterGirl reported on it), and as from today a comprehensive exhibition in the MAK is also dedicated to the “founder of Modernism”. It presents a large number of his colourful, visionary and style-defining textile and furniture designs – everything from complex interior furnishings to small everyday-gadgets: eyecatcher sofas, dream chairs and fantasy prints.

Vintage Heart Pop Up!
In her wonderful poem “One Art“ Elizabeth Bishop describes how hard women may cling to (pretty) things and how emotionally valuable certain objects, such as a watch for mum or a ring from the best friend, can be. Jewellery tells stories and preserves memories. Just like the countless beautiful vintage pieces from Anika Rebhan, a second-hand-dealer’s daughter, which are waiting for new oaths of love and displays of affection in her jewellery pop up store. 313-year anniversary: Albin Denk
What a beautiful story! Austria’s first and oldest porcelain store is hidden in the middle of “Graben” and this year it celebrates – nicely polished and dolled up – its 313th birthday! Only a few years after the invention of the “white gold”, the former pottery factory “Zum Eisgrübl“ already dished up noble tableware from the porcelain manufactory Augarten and successfully made “table culture history” as the supplier of the k.&k. court. Today, Martina Lillie, the fourth generation, comes up for the successful luxury-mixture of tradition and neo-cult in the assortment. Now with Xmas exhibition and an Augarten anniversary mocha cup!

Burning incense evening
How about saying goodbye to the old year in a very pleasant way? In line with the season, earlier also called Twelfth Nights, Birgit Heyn introduces the old art of burning incense. Why and when do people burn incense? How do you use charcoal? How do angelica and dragon’s blood smell? Burning incense is deeply rooted in many cultures and the herbs, resins and blossoms are each associated with specific goddesses, gods and guardian spirits. The burning rituals are accompanied by stories and myths and nourish fantasy and the unconscious. An evening full of practical and background knowledge.

Ursula Wagner has an eye for special things. For the furnishing of her brand-new shop in Gumpendorferstraße she got dream art nouveau piles as well as old circular stairs and pompous theatre chairs. Well-located in the neighbourhood of Phil & Co, the vintage lover sells textile finds from the 20s to the 80s, but also exclusive and elaborately restored designer fashion. Already the skilfully styled mannequins animate to combine: golden 80s ankle boots meet shrill 70s rock, a delicate Prada blouse and a Miu Miu pullover. Who dares wins ;-)

Door No. 8
Aha, people are now constantly disappearing into a house in Neubaugasse, they dart into the back yard and take the stairs down to the basement. The unusual location makes curious: Two newcomers opened a steak restaurant there, which – at least as far as Vienna is concerned – breaks new ground. The steaks are first cooked Sous vide, that is at low temperatures, and then are put under a 1000 degrees oven, which was especially imported from the USA. The result: buttery tender steaks with lots of taste. Along with creative side dishes, a pretty atmosphere – and a hip bar in the middle of the restaurant!
