"Heya Girls!"
The highly respected Coco Chanel, who is mentioned a second time in this newsletter (on Tuesday), once said: “There are two things men will never understand: the miracle of creation and a woman’s hat”. Very wise. Whereas, nowadays, unfortunately (!) hats are worn so rarely that not even women are conscious of the miracle of headdress. And they do not know the feeling of elegance that overcomes you as soon as putting on a hat. That shall change this weekend! In the covered inner court of the Wien Museum, which currently shows the exhibition “Chapeau!”, young Viennese hat manufactories present a pop up store with their latest collections. For two days, the hat-makers show how to wear contemporary hat wear - from summery to extravagant. Wellenkind (Katharina Lehrkinder) will be there as well as hattitude (Christina Lichy) and Verhutung (Jessica Lopez). Well then: Take your wallet so that we can finally doff our hat in a fashionable manner ;-)

Wishing you a summery week

Painting 2.0
Expression in the information age: Photoshop meets brush, digital collides with analogue and they are ever more intertwined. With more than 200 art works by more than 100 artists, the exhibition “Painting 2.0“ tells the history of painting from the 1960s to the present. How did the concept of the human body change? Which influence do social networks have? The answer is provided by masters such as Keith Haring, Maria Lassnig or Niki de Saint Phalles, as well as by less famous contemporary artist. Multifaceted and interesting!

Live Crowdfunding-Soirée
Yes, crowdfunding is an interesting issue! And a highly modern way to collect money for projects. In crowdfunding, the financing is not conducted through banks, but through internet users, that is to say, very ordinary people. Normally, such a crowdfunding campaign is waged exclusively online – but this evening Vienna celebrates its first live crowdfunding! Three project groups present themselves in the Freitag store, they answer questions and try to convince the audience of their projects. The participants: Zweirad-Tüftler auf dem Holzweg, Fahrrad-Filetierer and Ghostletters.

Kathi Kallauch
“Life is too short”, is the title of one of Kathi Kallauch’s songs. This is why she quitted writing lyrics for others and made a childhood dream come true: since 2014 she has been on stage herself. Good for us, since the songs of the German singer-songwriter who lives in Vienna carry the feeling of sun on the skin directly into the ears. Finest, uncomplicated summer pop to sing along and drift. Also on stage in the double concert tonight: Johannes Sumpich with whom she already recorded the summer hit “Kein Sommer für einen allein“.

Hinterhof #1
Initially the two designers Teresa Wally and Irene Schenk just wanted to have coffee together. But when two creative heads meet, ideas bubble up as well. And a super nice programme for a joint day was born right away. In an otherwise private, very cosy backyard with garden, yoga, breakfast, open library, music, art, shopping (bags, pictures, tableware, plants, small items of furniture), lunch and networking are on the agenda today. And fine workshops, for example with the florist Gabriele Jochinger and paper cut illustrator Nanna Prieler – if you want to participate in the workshops, please register, otherwise just hop by!

These are definitely no Hunger Games. Because after the food-puzzlehunt of today no one will go home hungry. Participants may sample tasty products at 10 different locations – from a market stall to an insider’s tip restaurant: there’ll be everything from bread to ice cream, from spicy to sweet. However: You first have to puzzle out where you’ll get the delicacies! The German word “Schnitzeljagd” (treasure hunt) takes on a very realistic meaning in this case ;-) The tour starts with a joint breakfast in the Impact Hub, then participants make their way through the city in teams of 2.

Lebensfreude wellbeing fair
It is located directly at the gates of the city, at the highest point of the completely flat Marchfeld: the ruin of Markgrafneusiedl. And today, more than 50 exhibitors set up their stalls in the old building. The product range reminds of a medieval market with feel-good-effect: Incense materials by a shaman, archery with a mental coach and loads of products and lectures to slow down one’s everyday life. You may also participate in a guided tour of the ruin. And since the former windmill is going to have a new owner soon, this may be the last chance to visit the beautiful building. Free entrance.

Everything for free! The event is presented by “Zweitfrau” singer and yoga instructor Diana Lueger, yoga mats are available on site – and the first 1,000 yoginis may even take them home afterwards. Solaris
An odyssey in space, from a distant star to one’s innermost self, into a secret world, fascinating and dangerous. Performing Stanislaw Lem’s famous SciFi novel “Solaris” on stage requires a director that reaches out for the stars. And who, just as the Kiev-born Berliner-by-choice Andriy Zholdak, thinks in terms of possibilities rather than in barriers. In his production for the Vienna Festival he combines Commedia dell’arte with cyberpunk and science-fiction-fantasy in an incredibly imaginative and energetic way – fast and sometimes spectacularly irrational.

ViennaPhotoBookFestival
After its huge success last year – far more than 4000 visitors during one single weekend – the ViennaPhotoBookFestival, has definitely become the most important photo book festival in Europe. Photo books, which usually are rarely in the limelight, move to the centre of attention as an independent form of arts – and the Ankerbrotfabrik is turning into a stage for 2 days: an area of 1000 sqm, more than 60 international booksellers, countless artists. Ideal to browse, buy photo books and chat with the publishers. And to attend interesting lectures – for example with Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang!

NASA's Journey to Mars
Life on Mars from the perspective of an actual NASA woman! Dava Newman, deputy administrator of the American space agency, comes to a lecture to Vienna today. In the Museum of Natural History she talks about NASA’s research and how people should be brought to new places of the solar system in order to eventually live on new planets for the long term. New technologies are permanently tested in space, a journey to Mars is intended to become reality already in the 2030s. An exciting idea, and after the presentation tonight, maybe a bit less utopian.

Bridges
I know, new classical music is not everyone’s cup of tea. Those who like it, however, will be delighted by a few true gems at the new festival “Bridges” starting today at the Konzerthaus! Works by the two grand composers Joanna Wozny and Olga Neuwirth are represented as well as Friedrich Cerha, of course. The term “Bridges“ expresses the idea of building bridges in the Europe of the 21st century – and in this sense, international ensembles come to Vienna to perform Austrian contemporary classical music there. Amongst the musicians: the ensemble mosaik and United Instrument of Lucilin from Luxemburg.

Chanel costumes, dresses, trouser suits, blouses and twinsets, but also bags, jewellery, belts and shoes are put on auction today. All of them from the “Era Karl”, which has been existing since 1983, and all of them from the inventory of a Viennese lady, who has completely fallen for Chanel for decades. bratfisch
They know how to combine Wiener Lied and reggae – and how great! The amazing quartet bratfisch skilfully spices up traditional Viennese sounds with world-music elements. An excursion to the Wienerwald with one’s sweetheart is interpreted in Bossa Nova style, for example, and the laidbackness of the Viennese soul sounds Jamaicanly relaxed all of a sudden. Vanilla crescent moon meets lagoon reggae, a cool mix indeed! Besides bratfisch, another keen-to-experience quartet is going to show its skills tonight: Maschanzka mix European folk styles, from Novosibirsk to the Bretagne.

Introduction to Homeopathy
„Similia similibus curentur“ – the basic principle of classical homeopathy is simple. Like is cured by like, bee stings are treated with bee poison (Apis), just to mention an easy example. But what’s the story behind watering down and shaking white pellets and homeopathic diagnosis? How do you find the right cure? And the most important question: Does it really help? In her lecture, the experienced homeopath Katrin Fux explains the basics of the 200-year-old healing method and is happy to answer specific questions afterwards.

A doll’s house? A parlour? In any case, one of the nicest new openings of the year! The Swiss enclave run by Kathrin and Markus Gubler looks enchanting – with its white vintage furniture and red-and-white fabrics – and (indeed) seems like an extended living room. The speciality is “wähen”, flat cakes, savoury or sweet. By the way: they do not count calories here! Merci ;-)
