"Heya Girls!"
If you want to know what's happening in Vienna at the moment art-wise, you should stick your nose into the local galleries and artists' studios next week. The Vienna Art Week is about to start and dishes 200 (!) top-class events using the motto “Losing Control”. To kick off the weekend, 100 artists are opening their studios for visitors. Inspiring insights into the wacky worlds of colour and brain candy are pretty much guaranteed. Instead of planning your own route, you can join various guided tours with people from the art world from 14:30. Exclusively within the framework of Vienna Art Week, even the federal studios open their doors, so you can visit the studios in Wattgasse with artist Gerald Straub. And not far from the Augarten, the House of Losing Control presents itself for a week: a former car dealership including workshops and outbuildings becomes a museum for 70 local and international artists. Let's go on an art tour through the city!

Wishing you a shrill week,

 PE-Schmuckdesign
PE-Schmuckdesign turns 10
As a child, Petra Exenberger already collected garnets in the Ötztal and amethysts in the Waldviertel. The passion has remained, because for years the former musical actress has been making high-quality arm, neck and ear jewellery from genuine gemstones, pearls, silver & co. By now, her nice shop in the Altgasse is already 10 years young, and this is being celebrated today! On the one hand with late-night shopping until 21:00, on the other hand there's a discount of 20% on every purchase – and an extra bracelet for free. Ladies, how time flies!

 The Slow Label
The Slow Label & Maisonette
There's no way around it anymore: It's November, and the first Christmas pop-ups are blowing in. We start with a particularly nice one – not only full of pretty things, but also all fair-trade. The Slow Label is the fair fashion brand of Austro-Influencer Anna-Laura Kummer. She now lives in Berlin, but her basics with the pretty details are visiting Vienna. She has teamed up with Andrea Lems for this. Her charming little shop Maisonette sells fine stationery and sustainable (home) accessories. A hot address for Christmas presents...

Michael Schnitzler
Buch Wien is in full swing! The Festival of Books takes place as usual at the Messe Wien, but many of the book presentations are scattered throughout the city. Today, for example, the grandson of Arthur Schnitzler tells of his exciting life journey to Costa Rica. Michael Schnitzler actually plays the violin and has performed on international concert stages. Until the rainforest in Costa Rica awakened his passion. Schnitzler founded the association “Regenwald der Österreicher”, which works to preserve the biodiversity of the rainforest. Reading and talk today at Thalia Wien Mitte.

Dumpling season
The cold season is dumpling season! Today you will therefore be initiated into the art of dumpling making. You’ll learn how to make a wide variety of doughs, from bread dumplings to curd cheese dumplings, as well as their fillings – whether with smoked meat, plums or à la Mozartkugel. On top of that, chef Marco Pauer gives valuable pro tips, for example on the correct cooking to avoid dumpling mush and what to do with leftover dumplings. Finally, the future dumpling makers will receive all the recipes, of course, including a goodie bag to take home. Tasty!

Paper Market at puuul
Insider tip! Design and art like to shake hands, currently at puuul, for instance. In the exhibition space of landscape artist Hannah Stippl, there is not only the vernissage of a new exhibition with the cheeky name Accept All Cookies, but also a paper market! One floor above the exhibition, in the studio area, there's everything paper lovers could possibly need, for example: vintage paper to bind your own books, milled wrapping paper, artistic little boxes by Schatto, charming lampshades in the shape of a house by Stefanie Wilhelm. How neat!

Anna Marboe: Liebe
Popeye and Olivia: One of the greatest love stories of our time ;-) In the play by Sivan Ben Yishai, Olivia is a gifted writer who doesn't want to steal the show from her spinach-gobbling sailor. Olivia is blown away by the fact that Popeye is interested in her, the wallflower. The basic idea: if he's happy, the relationship is happy. Or is it? With a lot of wit and clever charm, Olivia finds out how to navigate between the classic role model and feminist self-presentation. Staged by Anna Marboe, who not only plays music sensitively, but also directs sensitively.

Picknick under the bridge
November may not be quite the right time for a picnic, but it's certainly the right time for an almost hidden concert under the Heiligenstadt railway bridge! The spectacle is organised by Tini Trampler & the Playbackdolls, who of course also play live. Author Eva Schörkhuber will read from her current book, the Viennese beatbox-pop duo Wiener Blond will also perform, and in between there will be jazz from the bar piano. The party animals have been asleep for a long time, now it seems they're ready to pick it up again. For outside, there's warm punch or wild warm-up dancing. Halleluja!

A terrific Sunday programme for amateur photographers! Experiencing the city as a photo motif on this walk through Wieden: from the Otto Wagner Pavilion via the Karlskirche towards the Hauptbahnhof. Tips and tricks on photography will be provided by professional photographer Christian Schlaghuber aka Chris Waikiki. We’ll walk along magnificent embassy buildings, historical statues and, of course, past the Belvedere, too – you can train your photographic eye along the way. Waikiki wants to show that it’s possible to discover new things even in long-known, familiar places.

Christmas Market on Spittelberg
Every year again... When you think of the Spittelberg Christmas Market, it could almost slip your mind that it wasn't even allowed to take place last year. But this year there will be colourful hustle and bustle, arts and crafts, punch and fresh Baumkuchen on and around Spittelberg again! The Spittelberg market is now 27 years old and was recently voted Vienna's most beautiful Christmas market. And really: if you're looking for good food and handmade gifts, you're sure to enjoy yourself here – whether it's a beeswax candle, a hand-forged gold bracelet or socks from the Kashmir goat.

 Festival der jüdischen Kultur
Women's power in Judaism
Hannah Arendt, Hedy Lamarr, Dr Ruth – there are plenty of Jewish power-women! This year's Festival of Jewish Culture is therefore dedicated to these fascinating personalities. Films, exhibitions, concerts and talks will bring women’s power on many levels from today until 9 December. Tonight, the festival opens with a concert, Ethel Merhaut and the newly founded Anna Rothschild Ensemble go in search of traces of Jewish composers who found a new home in Hollywood after fleeing their home countries. The exhibition by Shirat Dvora will also be beautiful.

Ludwig Wittgenstein
Wittgenstein the philosopher: we know. But Wittgenstein the photographer? Unknown. With its new special exhibition, the Leopold Museum focuses on a sideshow in the life of Ludwig Wittgenstein that has received little attention so far. As one of the most important thinkers of the 20th century, he staged unusual self-portraits, for example, or even automaton photos. A selection of his postcard correspondence with family and friends will be on display, as will the family photo album, which has only been partially published to date. And because it's St. Leopold’s day, you can even go to the museum for free!

Central American Film Festival
If you're still living off Viennale memories, you can march right on to the next film festival. Films from Central America are usually not enough shown in cinemas here. This festival wants to change that: Today Objectos rebeldes will be shown at the opening, a documentary about huge, centuries-old stone spheres in Costa Rica, of which no one has yet found out why they exist. The other documentaries, short films, feature films and art films from the other side of the world also open up exciting new perspectives. After the end of the festival, the films can also be seen online!

Yogallery: Open Space
Cool idea: the Yogallery is a symbiosis of yoga studio and art gallery. The premises in Baumgasse used to be part of a factory and then Markus Prachensky's studio. Now, until 19 December, yoga is practised here on all levels and art by Viennese artists is exhibited. Today is Open Space, which means that you can drop in for a cup of tea and look at paintings by Elena Kristofor, Stephi Robe and Offerus Ablinger. The former plays a lot with spatial perspective, the latter painted futuristic nudes of his queer friends. Look around and feel good is the motto.

Olav
There are also start-ups that take care of the practical side of life – like Olav. The start-up produces sustainable pots and pans with a copper core that are not exactly cheap, but last almost forever. The cooking vessels are suitable for the oven and dishwasher and – this is the kicker – can be re-coated. There is currently a collection of pans by Neni founder Haya Molcho, who also invites us to a virtual cooking evening. One of the founders of Olav is a Viennese woman, which is why there's now a pop-up here in the city for the first time over Christmas!

Austria – land of femicides?
Murders of women have more than doubled in Austria since 2014. How and why Austria went from being a pioneer in violence prevention to a stronghold for acts of violence, especially against women, is explained today by political scientist Maria Rösslhumer. She is the managing director of the Vienna’s Women's Shelters and head of the Women's Helpline against Violence. She calls for reforms and rethinking in the judiciary and politics: If measures are insufficiently applied, this is a carte blanche for perpetrators and for insufficient victim protection. 15 minutes just for me
Women know this all too well: between home office, housework and looking after the kids, their own mental health is often neglected! Women tend to be particularly burdened by the pandemic. If the holiday days for this year are already numbered, short time-outs can also help during stressful times. The Viennese Nachbarschaftszentren now offer one of these – very low-threshold, because online – for free: every Wednesday, you can relax for 15 minutes under supervision. With some small exercises, body and mind are relieved and refreshed. Will certainly do you good!

Cool: Three Austrian designers got together and opened a boutique in the 6th district last Saturday. On the two floors, you can dress yourself from top to bottom – and not only at pleasingly reasonable prices, but also produced fairly and locally. In their designs, Lieblingsrock, MarS and Marilyn Hirsch also like to reach into the colour pot sometimes – perhaps the reason why they have kept the small, fine shop rather white and furnished it in a minimalist way. Good to know: if something doesn't fit, it will be made to fit (at no extra charge).

He grew up in Spain, his parents are from Gambia – and he used to be a model and influencer. But then Khalifa Dampha decided to cook. During the lockdowns, he tested out various recipes at pop-ups from time to time and has now settled down. Lambrecht now serves Gambian-Spanish fusion cuisine: Gambian empanadas, vegan jackfruit tacos and, above all, jollof rice, a kind of stew with minced meat and all kinds of vegetables. So, finally dishes that are not known in Vienna! And women are obviously braver than men – it's mostly ladies sitting here ;-)
