"Heya Girls!"
What a way to start off! The year is only a few days old and there are already presents for you! With a drum roll and sparkling eyes I have the pleasure to announce: the CitySpotterGirl is presenting the pre-premiere of the best film of this spring season – and is inviting you to the cinema for free! “Hidden Figures” is the true (!) and never before told, unbelievable story of Katherine Johnson, Dorothy Vaughn and Mary Jackson. The three Afro-American women worked for the NASA at the beginning of the sixties and as brilliant mathematicians they were part of the team that made the first circumnavigation of the earth possible for US-astronaut John Glenn. Or, better said: without these three ladies, John Glenn would have never gone to space. And all that during a time when black women weren’t even allowed to use the same toilet as their white colleagues. A wonderful film full of women’s power – and with Kevin Costner as chief of the space travel program. So, who wants to see the film (original version with subtitles) before everybody else can? We give away the tickets in pairs on a first-come, first-served basis. So start mailing ;-)

Keep cool during heated debates

Who hasn’t felt like this before? Sometimes you just run out of the right words in important situations. Or – particularly annoying! – the super-brilliant quick-witted answer doesn’t occur to you until it’s too late. The good news: quick-wittedness can be practiced! Cabaret artist Susanne Pöchacker is offering debate training for women, at tonight’s informative event you can try out both method and coach. Every participant gets to test their very own verbal aplomb and will then receive the first tips on how to act in future heated situations without going silent.

White Cube – Black Box

Usually we love Stephanie Klaura because she rebuilt a closed restaurant in Ottakring, turned it into a silk-screen printing workshop and now prints all kinds of fabrics with her designs under the brand name FabricFabrik. Lesser-known: she was awarded the BA Artist’s Award Carinthia 2016 – and from today on Klaura will be presenting her fun textile-installations with rhomb patterns at the Bank Austria Kunstforum. Which means: anyone who is dressed in the same check pattern as the piece of art can be camouflaged – and can therefore disappear, become part of the piece, become invisible! Hocus pocus – dazzle – go!

Angela Tröndle & Pippo Corvino

Music that makes you dream and soar: Angela Tröndle has been known for a few years as being part of “The little Band from Gingerland”. The Salzburg-born jazz singer and composer has such a delicate and expressive voice that makes listening to her a real treat. And now she recorded the new album “Getting Out of the Envelopes” together with guitarist Pippo Corvino, who lives in Vienna. The two musicians will be presenting their work tonight at the Radiokulturhaus. Poetically airy and light classy pop that does wonders for noise-afflicted big city ears! Long night of art house cinemas

And even more cinema! It’s not only that today in Austria a big number of current movies are premiering in cinemas but you also don’t have to pay for a ticket! Even just in Vienna, there are five legendary cult cinemas including the Filmcasino and the Künstlerhaus showing premieres, previews and talks. Stefan Ruzowitzky will be talking about filming the thriller “Die Hölle” in a workshop talk at the Votivkino, at the De France cinema a preview of “Elle” is on and because of the premiere of “Tanna”, a South Sea night will be celebrated at the Filmcasino, where you can also get film posters of the last few months for free. Long night of sex at the Wien Museum

Boring old rule, but as accurate as ever: sex sells! Which, of course, made the “Sex in Wien” exhibition the most visited ever at the Wien Museum. Now the end is near and that is why the event “Long night of sex” with readings, music and activities is happening today. The trio Lepschi will be singing ambiguous Viennese songs, Stefan Slupetzky and Mieze Medusa will be reading their favorite sex scenes, there will be talks on stage and the great Lucy McEvil is going to act as the presenter for the whole (free!) night. By the way, the exhibition’s last day is Sunday and that is why until then it will be open until 22:00 every day.

Women’s March on Washington

Isn’t it wonderful, when a bad event causes a global movement! On US President Trump’s first day more than 370 marches will be taking place not only in Washington but internationally with hundreds of thousands of participating women, fighting for women’s rights, environmental protection, respect and a peaceful coexistence. By the way, you can submit your personal reasons for participation beforehand under #WhyIMarch. So: time to put on some warm clothes (in the US pink wool hats are sold out already!), make a sign and conquer the street at today’s “Sister March” in Vienna.

Lullaby-matinee

The silence of a mountain lodge was groovy voiced AnneMarie Hoeller’s inspiration for her first solo album. She wrote the lyrics, composed and produced the album herself and it is a lovingly intimate tribute to comfort and a love poem to Morpheus, the ancient Greek god of sleep and dreams. At today’s matinee the musician with the gentle voice will be presenting her incredibly relaxing new “lullabies” live for the first time. The title track “Morpheus’ Arm” will be performed in different variations: singing, humming and instrumental with piano, all of them wonderful!

Inspired by Paper

Ladies, it’s time to be fast! This weekend is your very last opportunity to see the travelling exhibition “Inspired by Paper” with its astonishing and wonderful pieces made from paper. So go on and visit the “Papierwespe”: at the same-named atelier of Beatrix Mapalagama 39 paper artists from 15 different countries are exhibiting their works only until today. Incredible objects, jewelry and even houses made from paper can be discovered. And whoever can’t get enough of the material afterwards should know: the number of hip paper shops in Vienna is rising constantly. You can find them on our portal.

An alpine revenge tragedy

A folk music singer, an incestuous love triangle, an abandoned mountain cabin and the unconditional desire to land the ultimate folk pop song – those are the ingredients for the alpine revenge tragedy “A-Moll sing i no”. In the play Karl is about to reach the folk music hall of fame but is actually kind of sick of it and finds bad luck – in the worst way! The play combines everything that the two young Austrian authors have always wanted to see on stage: starting at love to homeland to pop culture, with realistic dialogues and plot twists, incest, fratricide and music. Picknick for One – A surreal circus theater

Contemporary circus doesn’t always have to refer to the bombastic Cirque du Soleil in order to capture the audience! By now there are also small and nice Austrian productions. For example this week in “Picknick for One” three artists and two musicians tell the surreal story of a woman and a pick nick in a humorous way. The production plays with notions of dream and reality, there is dancing, juggling and music, body and soul are whirling around, collapsing and getting back up. The magical spectacle can be experienced up close and directly, that’s the difference between a small stage and a big tent.

The glass of the architects

Not only interesting for glass-lovers, but a fascinating chapter of the Austrian arts and crafts: in its new exhibition the MAK presents more than 300 glasses designed by architects during the years 1900-1937. The glass artists were young back then, today they are world-famous for being the protagonists of Viennese Modernism: including Adolf Loos, Josef Hoffmann and Otto Prutscher. Back then, all of them launched groundbreaking new designs for decorative and practical glass – art glass after architects’ designs became the material of Modernism and a permanent feature in the product range of the Wiener Werkstätte.

Simply gorgeous! Everything that the French mother-daughter duo Anne and Hanae sell at their concept store has that particular “je ne sais quoi”. Super delicate golden jewelry from Paris, silk blousons and blouses painted by an artist, delightfully wrapped “Soft Parfum”- roll ons and pretty glitter-bags. Most of the stock at the recently opened store is from France, but among the around 50 labels there are also pretty pieces from other countries to be found – as long as they delight the owners. And at the moment many pieces are up to 40% off the regular price, thanks to the “Soldes”. Let’s go!

Restaurant of the week

Shoyu Ramen

Truth be told: the only thing that helps in this kind of weather is soup! Hot, steaming soup! How convenient that a new ramen restaurant opened in the first district – a Japanese noodle soup-soul food-stroke of luck for all the freezing and hungry out there. The nice restaurant is bigger than it seems from the outside, the noodles are homemade and the soups are prepared daily with fresh vegetables and other ingredients. The Chicken Ramen (with chicken, egg, vegetables, sprouts and thick noodles) tastes delicious, the Green Ramen comes with vegetables only, the Miso Ramen is plainly awesome. And all of them warm body and soul ;-)
