"Heya Girls!"
What should you do when you just cannot find the motivation to go outside during this cold? You could follow the latest lifestyle trend “Hygge”, get comfortable and snuggle into a cuddly blanket in front of the TV. You could go to a Fanta 4 concert like I did yesterday (awesome!) and warm up by dancing. Or, you could invite the world into your living room. And that is a lot easier than expected! Example: TiWo. An ensemble of 11 actors from Vienna is disregarding fundamental theater conventions: instead of bringing the audience to the theater, the theater comes home to the audience. The professional actors actually perform in private living rooms and the audience gets to experience the theater plays up close. “God of Carnage” or “Art” by Yasmina Reza is just as much part of the program as “Cuisine et dépendances”. Right now the group is rehearsing “Top Dogs” by Urs Widmer, which can be booked starting in April. By the way: the smallest room the “Theater im Wohnzimmer” (“theater in the living room”) ever performed in was only 12 sqm big. So there you go: culture works anywhere!
Wishing you a hyggely week

 Deborah Sengl
Deborah Sengl: “Heimsuchung”
Deborah Sengl’s last Essl-exhibition was both brilliant and sensational. It included scenes from “The Last Days of Mankind” by Karl Kraus, which she depicted using 200 prepared rats. And now the Viennese artist is dedicating herself to the topic of affliction (“Heimsuchung”). You see baroque puttos wearing sunglasses and a hoodie – and the angels are losing their innocence. Beauty mania, alcoholism and gambling addiction characterize the modern day “Hells Angels”, which Sengl masterly uses to confront the viewer with their own reflection. See the new series from today on at Hilger at the Bread Factory. The artist will be attending the vernissage.

Wunderl outlet pop up shop
Oh yeah, shoe-lovers feel a tingling sensation as soon as someone whispers the word Wunderl! The chic shop just has the most wonderful, beautiful designer shoes and bags. The only disadvantage for us Viennese women: the shoe paradise is located in Wiener Neustadt. But: for three days the Wunderl is opening a pop up in Vienna and brought tempting and highly reduced stock from its outlet: shoes and bags from Tod’s, Chloé or Jimmy Choo, yoo-hoo! And the location of the shoe-shopping-mania is nice as well: one of the former shops at the Karmeliter Market, that serve as accommodations and suites for the grätzlhotel now.

Blood brothers – the Karl May-Boygroup
What a surprising group of men ;-) Thomas Glavinic, Thomas Maurer, Guido Tartarotti and Armin Wolf have been under the Winnetou-creators spell ever since they were kids and today they are entering the bizarre cosmos of the adventure-writer together. Because the recently founded “Karl May-Boygroup” thinks that the legendary Winnetou-films from the 60ies don’t do justice to the work of the “greatest bragger of literary history”, so they decided to treat Karl May’s rich literary work the right way. An immensely funny evening for beginners and experts, from “Apache” to “Zounds”!

Ja Ja Ja festival of Nordic music
By now, we have undeniably had enough of the cold winter wind, but a solely musical breeze from the North is definitely not a problem at all. Today at the WUK, exciting and in Austria hardly known Scandinavian musicians are performing and presenting Nordic melancholy and also cool party sounds. There are the garage musicians “Have You Ever Seen The Jane Fonda Aerobic VHS” (what a name!) from Finland, also on stage will be the Danish trio Chinah, Axel Flóvent from Iceland and the Norwegian newcomer Gundelach. The easiest way to listen in is through the Ja Ja Ja-Spotify-playlist!

Winter vegetables – workshop
Not much happening in deep-frozen patches? Wrong! Tasty vegetables like pink kale, green pak choi or striped rocket salad grow outside, even in this cold weather. During a half-day workshop at the City Farm, hobby gardeners can learn quite a few things about the topic of winter gardening. Perennial plants are presented, the correct cultivation periods are outlined and technical aids are introduced. Equipped with sufficient knowledge, everyone even gets to plant their own patch with winter vegetable treasures. And that is how the Austrian gardening year becomes four-seasons long as well ;-)

„Collage“ dancing
Short digression: traditional “Perchten” clothed in red called “Tresterer” are stomping around in the Pinzgau region in Salzburg around January 5th in order to banish evil spirits. In the current exhibition of the Vienna Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art artist Thomas Hörl deals with this strange behavior and visitors even get to dance to DJ-sounds themselves ;-) The workshop today is also about the “Tresterer” dance: you work on paper collages but you can also experiment with sound, text and videos. All the finalized collages will then be combined into one joint piece of art.

“Die Taubenwirtin”
A different type of opera, which is only 90 minutes long, instead of 3 hours. Today a light opera in the style of the 18th century, full of infectious music and heartwarming comedy, will be performed at the (worth seeing) parsonage of the Karlskirche. The story is set in the era of empress Maria Theresia, in a rustic Viennese tavern. The owner of the tavern is struggling with the colorful antics of her guests. Eventually a mysterious guest arrives and the turbulent evening takes a turn for the better. By the way: the main character, the “Taubenwirtin”, is portrayed awesomely by Johanna Kräuter from Carinthia. Only until today!

The perfect opportunity for a Sunday program of a little bit of exercise and also doing something good for the immune system! At her studio, Katharina Gebharter teaches yoga, but she is also an Ayurveda-practitioner. And that is why after the common exercising part of her classes, there is also the chance to exercise according to your type and address the personal needs of the participants. From now on every last Sunday of the month, you can additionally enjoy a strengthening bowl of soup after the pre-lunch yoga session – and today is one of these Sundays: ayurvedic, vegan, and a great health protection.

High voltage festival
Incredible! After 17 years and more than 10.000 demonstrations, the great Tesla coil of the Technical Museum is finally allowed to start his well-deserved retirement. His successor shoots lightings just as well as he did – and it is part of today’s (highly) interesting Nikola Tesla-experiment in the Great Festive Hall: high frequency AC voltage is created with three Tesla coils and the generated energy is used to transform lighting into sounds. Sounds crazy, but it’s possible! The “magician of electricity” would have definitely enjoyed that the lighting-sound-spectacle eventually turns into live music!

Art nouveau in the Czech Republic
Impressive and beautiful! The historian and photographer Peter Schubert has been documenting art nouveau architecture all over Europe for years. They are often hidden and unknown details of houses, administrative buildings, churches and even cemeteries; his archive includes around 31.000 photographs from 24 European countries. A selection can be seen right now at the Czech Center, the focus is on art nouveau gems from the Czech Republic. But the splendid Viennese buildings and their architects are introduced as well, a few of them originating from Bohemian and Moravian countries.

Platzhirsch pop up store
The traditional “Dirndl” is gaining popularity – and not only for occasions like the Hunter’s Ball. As per this trend, staff members of the Steigenberger Hotel Herrenhof greet their guests while wearing “Trachten” every Friday. At the moment there is also a Trachten pop up store inviting the Viennese women to “dirndl up” as well. In the hotel lobby, Trachten-award winner Bettina Grieshofer presents her newest creations from her Dirndl workshop “Platzhirsch” in Bad Aussee – unique handmade pieces ranging from traditional to hip in great colors and cheeky designs. Plus consultation from the Dirndl master herself!

“Demut vor deinen Taten Baby”
Watch out – dangerous dialogues ahead! The snappy-humorous three-women’s play from Laura Naumann entertains with fast paced verbal duels between the three awesomely rebellious young actresses. The main characters Lore, Bettie and Mia meet in an airport bathroom where they find an abandoned suitcase – and after this supposed terror attack reaches a happy end, they have an idea: with the help of simulated attacks they want to spread their newfound joy among the other tired creatures on this planet. A pretty radical plan ;-)

Working title: Teaser
Kind of like a sneak preview of what is to be expected from the Austrian young designer elite this year, will be presented around the Schikaneder today. Before the big and always absolutely hip fashion show of the University of Applied Arts in June, students of the department of fashion design are now presenting videos, performances and installations at four different locations on Margaretenstraße and Mittersteig. So to say, a pre-taste of their work-in-progress collection. Afterwards, there will be a crazy after show party at the Schikaneder. Cool creations, cool crowd!

The CitySpotterGirl normally prefers good news – and that is why instead of the flu, the many winter sales are in high season in the newsletter ;-) And here is another good one: the nice shop “Auf der Seil” is granting great discounts on cuddly mohair scarves from Mantas Ezcaray, trendy wool scarves from Lovat&Green and stylish hats from the manufacturer G’inG’i from Tuscany. A few decoration pieces also have to go, in order to make room for the spring pieces – including vases from the German design company Guaxs and table accessories from the British label Avenida Home – particularly pretty and colorful!

People at the hotel
Well, if you could be a fly on the wall at famous Viennese hotels, it would probably result in enough stories for more than one TV series ;-) Today’s city discovery tour with Patrizia Kindl starts at the Imperial and continues on to a few hotels on the Ringstraße and in the city center, including many from the Sacher to the Orient. The focus is on the history of the houses but first and foremost on anecdotes, scandals and occurrences around famous Vienna-guests. You learn where Queen Elizabeth met her friend Pavarotti, where Charlie Chaplin used to stay and which hotel played a role in Marie Bonaparte’s life. Fascinating!

Restaurant of the week
Tipps der Stadtspionin
The Italians have their Tramezzini – and as of late we know that the Japanese also love fluffy sandwiches. Igor Kuznetsov, who already made waves with the Karma Ramen, brings the next Asian food trend to Vienna with the tiny restaurant Onisando. The “Sandos” consist of something breaded (schnitzel, fish, meat balls), vegetables and sauce between toasted slices of brioche and they are served with miso soup and a piece of fruit – that’s Japanese fast food. The menu also includes a vegetarian option. You can eat at the small counter then and there – or you take the fluffies home.
