"Heya Girls!"
Rural, idyllic, smart – if you would like to feel as if you’re in a British country novel you should set off for the twenty-second district this week. The classy, welted shoes by Ludwig Winter have been produced right in the heart of a park at the beautifully restored Süßenbrunn Manor for a couple of years. And at this very place, a two-day Autumn Market is now taking place which you simply cannot miss! It’s not just a factory outlet with price-reduced shoes that’s waiting at the fine manufactory (many regular customers consider Reiter shoes the prettiest shoes in the world), but also attractive pop-ups. Lena Hoschek brings her winter collection plus, as a new mummy, delightful baby fashion, Caleo Cashmere offers elegant knitwear fashion, and Femme Maison sells timelessly elegant dresses. And the hungry, dear ladies and lords, will be supplied with gourmet food. Very British!

Wishing you a charming week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Jesper Munk
Interesting young guy with a great voice! Jesper Munk is a native of Munich with Danish roots and released his third album “Favourite Stranger” in April. While “Claim” and his debut album “For In My Way it Lies” were an homage to the Blues-legends who once inspired him to play the guitar, the current songs represent a whole new mission: tear everything up, back to the beginning. The result is the portrait of a young man, at the center the old dilemma of love vs. suffering. “It’s about being honest with yourself”, says the 26-year-old. Beautiful, slow songs – listen in here.

Motel a Mio-Ceramics Super Sale
Oh, these colours! If pastel- and sea-coloured tableware sends you into rapture, you now have a fixed date: the Munich pottery label “Motel a Mio” comes to Vienna for three days to hold a mega-sale. The beautiful ceramics are produced in a human- and eco-friendly manner in Portugal, everything is hand-picked and hand-painted. They usually sell in stores in Munich, Berlin, and Hamburg, but now us Viennese ladies get to take advantage of a Super Sale: the bowls, cups, vases, and plates glazed with gorgeous colour-gradients are all 40 to 70 % off.

Danza y Frontera
The Tanzquartier whirls into the new season with a powerful piece. Its main focus is an ancient dance which has its roots in the pre-Hispanic time at the border between Mexico and the USA – an area now suffering from violence, drug trafficking, military presence, and cheap labour industries. Today, the dance is modernly charged, aside from colonial narratives it also features hip-hop culture and mysticism. Choreographer Amanda Piña understands “Dance and Border” as a form of resistance and lets her dancers express border-drawing and border-crossing with full effort of their bodies. Powerful!

Vienna Felt-Festival Week
The felt-recipe is actually quite simple: water + wool = felt. And yet you do need a little bit more (of practice and know-how) to master the oldest textile art in the world. And to make such great felt-creations from simple sheep’s wool as Ursula and Susanne Weber. They, together with international felt-colleagues, host a (sales) exhibition at the Alte Schieberkammer of the city of Vienna. And if you want to experience the wool-metamorphosis with your own hands, you can try out felting or participate in workshops with felt-artists throughout the event!

Vienna Autumn Days
From apples and pears to lesser-known wild fruit and chilli peppers – autumn offers a colourful variety, harvest-wise. The Autumn Days at Burggarten organised by the Bundesgärten and the Gartenbau-Gesellschaft are all about enjoying autumnal fruits this year. You can get to know exotics like persimmon or mini-kiwi there, shop fine things like saffron, poppy- or chokeberry products, admire the plants from Bundesgärten, and stock up on flower bulbs or little fruit trees. And gardening fans can bring different types of fruit with them and have them identified.

Home Movie Day
Terms like Super-8 and 16mm-film still mean something to you? Then you clearly belong to the golden agers around here. But much more important: you might still have, like CitySpotterGirl too, such films collecting dust at home. Then why not bring them to Volkskundemuseum today for Home Movie Day. Old private films, found or inherited film material will be reviewed by experts today. The curators of the exhibition “Alle antreten! Es wird geknipst!” are present as well to look through private photos of all kinds and times brought in by people. And there are also film screenings!

Komolka hosts a Sewing Practise Day
As Europe’s biggest textile retail trader, Komolka is Vienna’s top address for all sewing & tailoring-related topics. Starting now, the traditional company will pass on its expertise from more than 70 years of selling and customer service in the form of a workshop series: sewing crazies can learn new things about different subjects there. Today, they are offering tips & tricks on buying cloth and designer Walter F. Lunzer tells interesting stuff about wool, silk, cotton, and linen. In November, they will continue with “Experimental Cutting Techniques”. And all of it is free!

Here you’ll find lots of cuddly and decorative stuff by top brands like Bloomingville, Madam Stoltz, or House Doctor. Das Bootshaus Autumn Party
It’s a little bit too cold for swimming now, but you can still spend a chill Sunday on the water! So, off to Alte Donau where the Bootshaus is hosting an autumn party. Besides culinary things from autumnal delicacies to Sturm, there is also a small pop up market taking place on the terrace right at the water. With organic wines and grape juice from winery Urban, fanciful jewellery from Severine and funny fish bags. Punch & lebkuchen decorating is also on the programme but we’re just going to blink that away, the sun is so bright here on the water ;-)

Make your own leather bags
Pick up the leather! In today’s workshop at Werkbuchcafe, course instructor Ferenc Zamolyi helps participants get rid of any apprehension they may have about the material, making them into leather bag designers in one day. Everyone can create a bag according to their own ideas, every step is demonstrated – from the cut pattern and cutting out to the coating of the leather edges and the final putting together including rivets, seams, buckles and clasps. Plus, you will also learn how leather can be dyed and how to adorn it by means of embossing or pyrography.

Day of Open Temple Door
There are actually a number of Buddhist centres in Vienna that you usually don’t notice much. But today, they open their doors and allow for a fascinating trip into the Buddhist community: with guided mindfulness meditations and lectures, introductions to Zen practice and workshops. At the Buddhist centre on Fleischmarkt (a building well worth seeing!), there is also a smoke-sacrificial-ritual for the elimination of obstacles taking place. By the way, you can read an interesting interview of CitySpotterGirl’s with one of the world’s first Buddhist priestesses here.

Would be great if the Cottage cinema in Gentzgasse (for those who remember it) would open again. Since that’s unfortunately not happening, the old Wienerlied Café Schmid Hansl is serving as temporary suburban cinema. From today, it shows domestic films of different genres on Mondays, most of them produced around the year 2000. The Wirtshaus film nights are complemented by short films as well as #KlappeAuf newsreel as interlude. Today, they are showing “Murer – Anatomie eines Prozesses” about the big legal scandal concerning the Nazi “butcher from Vilnius”.

That’s right, this is how a good week starts: with relaxed and most of all individualist shopping! Seven designers (six from Vienna, one from Hungary) have come together for a small, fine pop up in Gumpendorferstraße to sell off the highlights from their current collections. Among them are knit wear from fine Merino and cashmere by Gabriele Cihlar, photo print dresses by Langer Design, unconventional and handmade Viennese dresses and other clothes by Doris Bittermann or “subags”, art by Su Sigmund made portable – real eye-catchers like everything here!

Yasmine Hamdan
Almost too beautiful for the Flex! Today, the versatile Lebanese artist Yasmine Hamdan opens the Salam-Orient Music Festival with her charming interpretations of Arabic pop. Fans and media have fallen in love with her touching voice and alluring personality not least because of her memorable scene in Jim Jarmusch’s film “Only Lovers Left Alive”. On her current album “Al Jamilat”, she combines traditional Arabian sounds with hip western pop and electronic sound in a refreshing manner. The Salam-Orient Festival is still running until 23 October.

Wine in the City
Cheers! Today, “Wine in the City” turns the inner city into a wine boulevard with more than 20 tasting stations from fashion store to wine shop. Best treat yourself to a first little sip at BA Kunstforum, where ten vintners from Unger to Höpler are pouring their wine. The tour of noble drops then continues across the city: Sneaker-Store Footsteps, for instance, is hosting the winery Schwarzböck and vintner-duo Faber-Köchl, Bründlmayer, among others, provides full glasses at Popp & Kretschmer and then you can booze up for the finale and party away with Rick Gin at Radisson.

Nights of Female Philosophers
Exciting! Until 18 October, there are daily evening events where great female minds are presented, misogynistic philosophy traditions are criticized, and the umbrella theme “Nature and Society” is discussed. For example, Simone de Beauvoir and Edith Stein get to meet in a fictitious dialogue. It’s interesting because Beauvoir refuses the notion of a predetermined feminine nature whereas Stein appreciated a woman’s inherit value that makes her a counterweight to a man. On today’s programme: an introduction into the thinking of feminist philosopher Luce Irigaray.

Michael Mittermeier
After the fire last year, the Globe is finally open again, it’s clearing the ring today for the laughing fit of the century! In the right corner as challenger: Michael Mittermeier. In the left corner, the favourite: the absurdity of daily life and her big brothers. The Bavarian comedy luminary fights as we know and love him, honest, tough and without mouthguard, he floats like Bruce Lee and stings like Maya The Bee. A man, a microphone, no rules ;-) With his new programme “Lucky Punch – Die Todes-Wuchtl schlägt zurück”, he manages a rousing K.O in 120 minutes. Boom-wham!

Veiled, unveiled! The Headscarf
The piece of cloth that devout women use to cover their head, face, or body arouses high emotions. The duty to cover up the head has also been part of European culture for centuries though, its history ranges from the early beginnings of Christianity to our modern times. The exhibition that opens today at Weltmuseum wants to unveil other aspects of the headscarf for a change and is thus presenting 17 distinct positions, for instance by designer Susanne Bisovsky or Timna Brauer – from textile exhibits to photographs and videos.

bon ton
What a nice new addition in Naglergasse! A “shop for modern ceramics” has just moved into a bright whitewashed vaulted venue there. The operators Brigitte Amort and Nina Goldnagl thought that the city was missing a store with a lovingly selected choice of ceramics from European artist studios. Well then: here, you can now shop series and individual pieces from five countries from Italy to Denmark, ranging from small, delicate pastel-coloured plates to sunshine-yellow mugs. Plus unusual things like flip vases in “paper clay”-technique. Very pretty and very dangerous for your wallet ;-)

Viola
She used to be head-patissière at Joseph in the third district, now Viola Bachmayr-Heyda bakes her own cream cakes. And silken tofu cheesecake with blueberries. And chocolate-bananas with peanuts, but without flour. And Sacher-slices with chocolate-butter-crème with stewed apricots. Anyone whose mouth hasn’t started watering yet has 1. only themselves to blame and should 2. at least visit the new café for its bold palm tree wallpaper. Because apart from delicious sweets, they also serve a thoughtful breakfast during the week (with bread from Joseph, duh), and quiche for lunch. Really a very nice place.
