Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
What disturbing days! Words rarely fail me, but what can one say in the face of such tragedies? One moment you think that the second lockdown is catastrophic for Vienna, and then people get shot – in the middle of our lively, cosmopolitan, safe city. These days I often have to think of a television documentary I saw more than 25 years ago. It was about the four-year siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war – and how the women of Sarajevo dealt with it. In a city without electricity and full of snipers, they put on their most beautiful clothes and make-up every day, as if there was a beauty contest to win. And so, just like that, they took to the streets. They refused to let it get them down. They refused to lose their dignity. These are strong role models. So: Even if we are temporarily losing our courage at the moment, we will not allow any virus or terrorist to destroy our beautiful city, our colourful society or our democracy. We stick together! All together!

Wishing you a calm week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

More control over your purchasing with MILA – the successful concept from New York and Paris has arrived in Vienna. MILA is now looking for 3,000 members to found the cooperative. Then a location will soon be chosen and the supermarket will be opened. At today's info evening, various ways of participating are demonstrated and questions can be asked. Good food for all!

 Kathrin Mayer
1000taschen
Rumour has it that there are women who carry half their household goods in their handbag. So it's a good thing then that 1000taschen’s mega-bags exist! The enormous, trendy bags made of recycled decorative and upholstery fabrics offer enough storage space even to advanced hoarders – plus a washable interior. With her social project Kathrin Mayer offers the hand-sewn, unique and inexpensive pieces in eight different sizes. Half of the proceeds go to various social projects, the other 50 percent directly to the seamstresses. Shopping without a bad conscience ;-)

Understanding Einstein
What was that again with mc squared? A physicist would call it the true beauty among formulas – the theory of relativity. Now, for CitySpotterGirl, too, quite a lot of time has passed since the physics lessons. Time to get your brain to make a bit of an effort again! What exactly the curved space-time concept is all about and why physicists are so crazy about three letters will be clarified this evening. With visualisations, simple modelling and a little bit of arithmetic (don't panic!) Franz Embacher brings the theory of relativity to us normies. Eureka!

Info Night Karuna Training
Especially in times like these, mindfulness towards ourselves and our fellow human beings is particularly important. Karuna is a central concept in the Buddhist training of the mind and means compassion. Karuna training combines Western psychology with the methods of Buddhism and creates an inner access to wisdom, openness and clarity through perception exercises and meditation. The information evening of the two-year course is aimed at psychologists, social workers and at all those who want to fully exploit their potential for mindfulness and compassion.

Alpaca Bargain Days at Weltladen
Is that frost you can see already on the greenery in the editorial garden? Please no! When it gets really cold again, you have to bring out the big guns, clothing-wise. And nothing is better suited for icy temperatures than alpaca wool. The hair of these cuddly South Americans insulates excellently and thus always keeps you cosily warm. So if you like it cuddly, you should stop by the Weltladen in Stammersdorf today: There’s a 10% discount on the entire alpaca assortment of top brands such as Beanie, Anoukoo and EZA. An interplay of sound and silence, striking cuts and a dark carpet of sound in the orchestra – Sofia Gubaidulina is known for this musical dramatic art. Wien Modern, the festival for new music, is moving online because of the lockdown, taking its best concert delicacies with it. Gubaidulina was the first composer at Wien Modern in 1989 – today the festival dedicates a special portrait to her. Violist Antoine Tamestit shines as soloist, conductor Oksana Lyniv leads the RSO in the world premiere of the new work “Zorn Gottes”. Expressive music live from the Musikverein!

Vintage-Design Market
When bargain huntresses rush into the 15th district, we know: the vintage flea market of furniture lover Ina Ritter is open again. Ina and Petra have once again collected a bunch of collector's items that come from Austria, Germany and Scandinavia. A must for all those who like 50s, 60s and 70s design! You can snatch some well-preserved furniture there, weird mirrors and lamps, a good deal of rare ornamental items, but also some bags and hats. In the reading corner you can also browse through a large pool of design-related reading material.

 Gärtnerei Ganger
Farmer’s Market
The miracle cure for November weather and lockdown gloom – hot vegetable soup! It tastes best with fresh winter vegetables straight from the farm. And you don't even have to go to the countryside. The Ganger nursery brings its home-grown delicacies directly from the fields to Donaustadt. Today the selection is bitter – but in a healthy way! Seasonal heroes such as kale, radicchio and kohlrabi provide important bitter substances that aid digestion and strengthen the immune system. For the sweets, there is honey from Mr. Bien and juices from the Triesneckerhof.

Premiere Zebricorn
Everyone already knows: CitySpotterGirl has a soft spot for unicorns. And even keeps one in the editorial garden. If you can't get enough of these fantastic creatures, either, you shouldn't miss the premiere of Zebricorn today. The web series tells of the adventures of a unicorn and zebra. The experimental artists Sabine Dichatschek and NiR from the University of Art in Linz take us into a pink, glittering fairytale world. Before the premiere, the two invite you to a Q&A on Instagram. It will be colourful, cheerful and somehow crazy. In short, experimental ;-)

Livestream: Tragedy
Art is very important. That’s what the Chancellor said somewhere sometime. No sooner have the people on stage processed the first lockdown than the next one is due. Fortunately, the aktionstheater has recorded its theatrical examination of the crisis for eternity. No more put-on bravery and sober-mindedness kitsch – Martin Gruber looks back on the past months and reckons with sermons of solidarity and quarantine patriotism. Between hope and resignation, the ensemble delivers an anarchic swan song for life as it once was.

Josef Hader
Who else really needs a laugh after the last week? An iconic, nostalgic cabaret night helps. Cabaret artist Josef Hader makes a selection of his programs available online free of charge. Among them is the “Colourful Evening", which was awarded the German cabaret prize in 1990. Almost an hour full of irony, ranting and mean jokes at the expense of the audience, which is having a great time. A 1990s Hader with horn-rimmed glasses, purple glitter jacket and giant fly – as biting as you know him, only with a little more hair on his head ;-)

 Tango Inside Out
Solo Tango Techniques
A dance class where all ten toes are out of harm’s way: In the Zoom class of Fanni and Helmut, there is no need for a counterpart who steps on your feet. The two tango professionals demonstrate different steps that solo dancers of all levels can learn. Like the Ocho step, one of the oldest tango moves in which you paint a sweeping eight on the floor with your feet. Also practiced is a “powerful” walk, expression in dance, and breathing in harmony with the rhythm. Plus: a little excursion into the cheerful and fast dance genre Milonga.

Virtual chat table
Lockdown, Home Office, Social Distancing – just because we use English words for everything doesn't make it better. The consequence is always: the loneliness barometer rises, many social contacts fall away. That's why magpies and chatterboxes meet again today for casual conversations at the “virtual chat table”. This is an open meeting place for everyone – and the best proof that Zoom is not only good for boring conferences at work. And don't worry – if you ever run out of conversation topics, the host is ready to chime in.

 Modus Vivendi
Domus Vivendi
The designer trio of Modus Vivendi has only moved two houses down the road, but the change is a big one! The shop for timeless knitwear fashion is now called Domus Vivendi and is casually international: open loft flair, bare concrete floors and lots of plants twining up the iron shelves. Key pieces are the beanies and jumpers made of mottled merino knitwear; since this is now a concept store, there’s also international and domestic fashion, such as from Eva Blut and Rosa Mosa. The work is done on the machines directly in the shop, so you can watch fashion being created live!

Gastronome Xu Zhang from Tanzen Anders spoils you with hot trendy drinks such as Matcha Latte and exquisite teas from Tete à Tee.
