Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I have strictly forbidden all those around me to say the bad a…-word. I’m not ready yet for what comes after summer, I’m a self-confessed cold season refusenik. So now I can only whisper to you that we’ll start terrifically and exceptionally into a… here in Vienna. Because: the huge, always locked attic of the MuseumsQuartier will be opened! And it turns into a dreamlike spooky ship’s hold, into a mega-theater space remodeled with objects, light, and sound. The performers from “toxic dreams” and “Fuckhead” set off – loosely based on Moby Dick – on a quest for the whale that swallowed Austria. And they take the audience members as the ship’s crew and travel with them to the faraway shores of nine islands in the Austrian ocean, with their peculiar inhabitants and customs. A ghost ship cruise in the attic – now that’s how I love Vienna!

Wishing you an adventurous week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

The Great Masters of the Renaissance
Pretty spectacular: a new exhibition features the “Great Masters” of the Renaissance prominently at Votivkirche. Very prominently indeed, since the world-famous image worlds and wall frescos are partly shown in their original size – like one replica of Michelangelo’s 5.17-meter-tall “David”. Also among the 53 works are: Da Vinci’s “Mona Lisa”, Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and Raphael’s frescos from the chambers of the Vatican. A great opportunity to experience these works if not in the original but instead up close, without a jostling crowd and waiting queues!

Centuryblend Vintage Pop Up-Store
Attention, American beauties: there’s heavy dealing with cool vintage and second-hand clothes on Gürtel for 3 days. The team of online shop “Centuryblend” regularly rummages through second-hand stores in the USA, now you can get their haul at a direct sale. The organisers’ witty notice: big demand, limited offer, little space – suffer for your style ;-) Now it’s not going to be that bad, and it definitely pays off! Almost exclusively women’s items, including labels like Abercrombie, classy vintage dresses by YSL & Co, college look and surfer brands. Go for it!

Die Bürgermeisterin unter der Tuchent
Now here you can giggle through an evening: the open-air-improv theatre at Tschauner is as funny as it’s bizarre. No high-brow dialogues and no plots difficult to follow, but instead a stage play ingeniously improvised by the Tschauner ensemble, almost without preparation – only the characters and the sequence of scenes are predetermined. And for the season finale they have planned a hearty affair, at least that’s what the name of the play suggests ;-) And don’t forget the traditional Tschauner menu (knackwurst and beer) from the buffet, this too is part of a visit of the Ottakring institution!

25hours meets Markterei
Well, hopefully it’s done raining soon because this feeding frenzy calls for dry weather! The Markterei is making camp in the park in front of the 25hours Hotel – with market stalls, street food, and bars. Surely no foodie dreams will remain unfulfilled between organic chips, fusion kitchen sandwiches, barbecue by Jacobo, and French boulangerie sins by Paremi. Besides, if you’re there already, you can get your weekend shopping done: they sell delicacies from Hissek smoked fish to Grossauer pesto. Plus live-acts and then after party in the 25hours’ attic. Cool!

Silent Disco at Strandbar Herrmann
No, we don’t want to hear that summer is slowly coming to an end! It’s much more important that the nights are still warm enough to celebrate outside. For example at Strandbar Herrmann where today it’s all about cheerful dancing at the Silent Disco. It works like this: party guests receive wireless headphones where they can choose between two DJs. Today Mr Robert Hitch will fire up the audience with Charts & Electro, while Mr Steve Shyd brings a mix of alternative, Indie & 80s/90s. So, take off your shoes and keep shaking until the sand below your toes warms up ;-)

A night under the banner of diversity
An inspiring journey through multiculti Vienna: at six different locations, you can dive into foreign cultures, get to know unfamiliar ways of life and perhaps even get rid of a prejudice or two. The “Long Night of Intercultural Dialogue” will be opened at Rathaus with a show of international dances and traditional costumes, at the SchokoMuseum, you can learn fascinating facts about chocolate from all over the world, you can engage in a discussion with migrants at Hauptbahnhof or participate in a Waterpainting Ebru Workshop in the Turkish Cultural Centre. Whatever that is ;-)

Solo Tango Workshop
Who ever said that for tango dancing, a senora must have her leg hooked around a partner? What constitutes tango can be performed alone just as wonderfully: elegant walking and expressive movements combined with self-confident body posture and, of course, passionate music. At today’s Solo Tango Workshop at Afripoint, everyone is allowed to stride, sway, and move across the floor within the group but still on their own, plus the African roots of the Argentinean national dance are being explored together. For this, no prior knowledge is required.

Alles Frank!
A true architectural gem that is usually not open to visitors! We are talking about Villa Beer in the 13th district – Josef Frank’s residential building-masterpiece from the 1930s. Two years ago, the private house opened its doors for the very first time for one weekend, now it will be open again for two days. In the course of fascinating house tours, brief lectures and tours through the neighbourhood. A little spoiler in advance: the seemingly plain building is basically brimming with hidden balconies, tea niches and ingenious space concepts. And there are also deckchairs in the garden as well as catering!

Well, if those who regularly rate the best chefs of the country host a Gourmet Fair, then the crème de la crème of local star chefs won’t need to be asked twice. The Gault & Millau couple Martina and Karl Hohenlohe invite guests to a 2-day tasting in the Kursalon, where 100 top chefs (from France, South Tyrol, Slovenia, and Romania too!) offer their creations. Stars like Paul Ivic and Konstantin Filippou will provide culinary highs, plus 50 star vintners serve wine. Art and Paintings Market
The METAStadt far from the city centre has evolved into one of the coolest (big) event locations of the city – with happenings ranging from the Maker Faire to a huge flea market. These old brick buildings really are cool, after all. Today, an art and paintings market is taking place there, where around 50 Viennese artists liven up the modern METACube in midst of the old walls with a colourful mix of arts and crafts. And if you don’t want to buy (handicraft) art only: the nice METAMarkt flea market also takes place today – indoor and outdoor!

The Moto Circle Festival at Ottakringer Brewery brings together the New Heritage Lifestyle and the Custom-Bike-scene, and apart from cool motorcycles, you will discover a unique, rather smooth biker style. From today things will get pretty haute at the MuseumsQuartier, couture-wise;-) Because as of this moment, Fashion Week no. 10 is up and running, and that means: fashion shows of national and international designers, pop-up stores (would be mean if you were only allowed to look!), fashion events and parties! This evening the catwalk will be warmed up with an Austrian fashion “Best of” the last 9 years. During the following days the newest collections from designers like Anelia Peschev or Smaranda Alsmasan will be presented hourly at the more than 70 fashion shows in the Fashion Tent.

Europe’s best buildings
And once more a beautiful exhibition for architecture friends! Every two years, the Mies van der Rohe Award is awarded to Europe’s most innovative architecture projects. Of the 355 nominated objects, the housing project deFlat Kleiburg (Amsterdam) emerged victorious, which was designed by NL architects together with XVW Architectuur. 40 projects from all over Europe were selected for the exhibition and are presented using plans, photographs, videos, models as well as 1:1 construction elements. Sophie Hunger
Her melancholic space-pop songs kind of go really well with the approaching autumn: at Grelle Forelle, you can indulge in the spherical electro sound of Swiss woman Sophie Hunger. The wonderful singer-songwriter honours us with as many as 3 concerts, tomorrow she’s still at the Arena and then on Thursday at Porgy. At the end of August, her new album “Molecules” was released, with eleven new songs that helped the 35-year-old to process her failed relationship. So no happy sound, but sad can also be quite beautiful. You can listen in here.

Lisa Eckhart
Not without good reason the young Styrian is the shooting star of the cabaret scene! A confident stage presence and precise linguistic wit, sly wickedness, mean rhymes, and pointed provocation are her means and trademark. With them she gleefully dissects faith, love, and politics with relish. In her bold cabaret solo “Die Vorteile des Lasters“, she encourages us to re-invent sins, à la “Be lusty and don’t limit yourself to two or three abysses of your body” or “Be vain and wrest your beauty from the dim eye of the beholder”. Good advice ;-)

Emmy Werner
Fascinating stories from the life of a strong woman: the former Volkstheater director turns 80 tomorrow and presents her biography today. Being a woman, directing a theatre, getting older – in her book “…als ob sie Emma hießen”, she deals with all this in a very personal manner. After her first years as actress on stage, she was soon drawn behind the scenes. Only there she could fully reach her individual potential. But what is the life of a woman really like who doesn’t want to be invisible at the side of partner? Emmy Werner’s reflection highlights the journey of a headstrong woman and gives courage.

Still Life. Obstinacy of Things
The portrayal of inanimate objects is after all a 400-year-old genre – and according to this sober definition it sounds rather dead ;-) It’s not, however: a new photo exhibition at Kunst Haus shows modern still life-art. While at one time, fruit, flowers and skulls used to be painted, this is all about things that surround us in our everyday life – from articles of daily use to waste products. International and domestic artists like Harun Farocki, Annette Kelm or Andrea Witzmann thus surprise you with a new view of ordinary things. Today’s vernissage!

Liu Jo
Sounds Asian but is Italian through and through! The fashion label Liu Jo was founded by two brothers some 20 years ago and has since grown considerably, there are hundreds of Liu Jo stores in Italy and the rest of the world. Now Vienna has a big flagship-store as well. The chic mono brand boutique only sells fashion for ladies and it’s full on Italian: tight-fitting, stylish and sometimes a little over the top. A few rivets here, a bit of transparent look there, plus some flowers and sequins. Even the jeans are full of glitter and feathers ;-) Still – and that’s just Italy for you – molto elegante!

Less than a year ago, Joseph opened a new shop at Albertinaplatz, now he has added a bistro as well. Culinary-wise, the purist-prettily decorated venue offers – apart from the Joseph classics – handsome breakfast specials like the Wiener Philharmoniker étagère for two, a sweet étagère with the phinest delicacies from the organic Patisserie, or during the week from 17:00 a selection of antipasti, a colourful mix of Austrian to Oriental cuisine. And for the people who don’t have time to sit down, there are all sorts of to-goes from bagels to wraps. Plus, hand-made organic Apfelstrudel :-)
