Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
I’d like to send my regards to all those who have left for the holidays already. Enjoy it! But we here still at home have quite a good time as well. Especially since one of my favourite summer events is whirling back into the city, the ImPulsTanz Festival! Like every year, Europe’s biggest get-together for contemporary dance brings cool international productions into town, plus more than 230 workshops, parties and exhibitions – makes it hard even for me to recommend individual dance events ;-) One of the highlights is definitely the Austrian premiere of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s new masterpiece, with dancing to Bach suites for cello performed live on stage. The opening with a touching solo by Dave St. Pierre at the Odeon will most certainly be terrific, too! And a great treat for dance aficionados: the new free workshops in the park on Argentinierstraße with ballet, breakdance, bawling or boxing. Edgy! And if you like it even freer than that, just make your way to the Burgtheater, where the festival lounge is rocking with cool music, and enjoy some unbridled shaking.

Wishing you a moving week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 Atelier D'Ora © Privatsammlung, Wien
Make Me Look Beautiful, Madame d’Ora
Her name sounds French and slightly disreputable but Madame d’Ora was Viennese and a famed photographer in her time. In 1907, Dora Kallmus was one of the first women in Vienna to open a photo studio. Within a few months, her “Atelier d’Ora” had established itself as the most elegant address for artistic portraits; she brought important figures from arts, fashion, the aristocracy and politics in front of the camera. The first artist she photographed was Gustav Klimt in 1908, the last one Pablo Picasso in 1956, Coco Chanel came just like Marc Chagall. From today, Madame’s pictures are shown at the Leopold Museum!

 Aerial Arts Austria
Aerial Arts Festival
Now we take to the air, dear ladies! Quite without planes and angel wings though, but with aids like fabric, hoops and ropes – and under the supervision of professionals. At the Aerial Arts Festival the visitors can let off steam swinging, floating and balancing. The program includes more than 30 aerial acrobatics workshops by international trainers, from Aerial Hoop and Aerial Rope right up to AcroYoga and Aerial Silk. Or how about some handstand practice and Bungee Dance from Bangkok? It’s great for losing touch with the ground under your feet in a controlled manner ;-)

Days of Deals at Schuhe für Frauen
That’s what we women want: comfortable shoes that aren’t embarrassing orthopaedic shoes but rather chic pumps and elegant heeled sandals. A large selection of those can be found in Gertraud Buxhofer’s shop – on sale from today! They sell off discontinued models and remaining stock of all brands in store, which are exclusively produced in Europe and with special attention to wearing comfort, by the way. Like leather lace-ups by Thierry Rabotin that cling to troubled feet like ankle socks, or wonderfully soft Wolkenwerk-thong sandals in glitz design. Until 10 August!

Jewellery Links
Brooches made from dried orchid leaves or poetic, sculpture-inspired necklaces – that’s really unconventional art jewellery! 13 artists from Turkey show their works at the stylish atelier alja&friends, many of which are made from unusual materials such as synthetic sponge, porcelain, polyurethane, wood, plastic or silicone. By the way, the stories behind the partly very colourful works of the artist collective called “Collective Turk” are really fascinating too. Female artist Aisegul Telli will tell you more about them at today’s Artist Talk at 18:30!

Summer of Love
Now that’s what you call summer! To have a good rave-up at a hip open-air location, slurping cool drinks and gazing up at the night sky. All of this is provided by “Summer of Love” – a festival that will fill the former Traktorfabrik in Floridsdorf with electronic music live acts. On Friday, you could beam yourself away dance-wise to hypnotic psytrance and progressive trance vibes, today the party continues with techno and tech house. And because fidgeting around in the fresh air makes you hungry: you can get hip-vegan to spicy-fast meals at the food trucks!

Encounter with my Partner
Talk about a different form of relationship revival: with Argentinian tango! The weekend seminar by the experienced professional dance-couple Sayaka Higuchi and Joscha Engel offers a chance to deal with the dynamics of your relationship in a playful and dance-like way, it is a matter of your own “posture”, of giving and taking energy, authentic self-expression, of touch and non-verbal communication. In a nutshell, it’s about the art of cooperation – during the dance as well as in your daily life. The seminar will be held in English and is also suitable for tango-newbies!

Gustav Klimt Birthday Party
Because Gustav Klimt would be 156 years now, there is a big celebration today at “his” studio (plus garden!) in Hietzing. In order to mark the occasion, WienGIN will flow, sculptor and painter Andje Pietrzyk will let you look over his shoulder during a live performance, and the famous jewellery label Freywille hosts a workshop on how to tie silk scarves in a pretty way. Klimt fans can partake in a guided tour through the house, real Gustav groupies can go to a meet & greet with two of his (great) grandchildren, and the first 100 guests will receive Klimty goodie bags.  Dom Museum Wien
Historical Treasures at Dom Museum
A guided tour at Dom Museum may not sound all that thrilling but prepare to be surprised! Because the St. Stephen’s treasury, worthily presented here, houses curious and interesting things, even if you’re normally not really into sacral art. Like Carolinian book illumination, glass art from Syria, the golden silk fabric of Rudolf IV’s shroud from Iran as well as a world-famous portrait of the Habsburg duke. The Museum was newly opened in autumn of 2017 and is home to some of the most precious works of sacral art in the world, many of which are still prompting fascinating questions for recent research.

Turnhallen flea market at Brick-5
The location in the 15thdistrict actually does owe its name to its former function as a gym (until 1938, it used to house a Jewish gymnasium). Today, a flea market is taking place in the cosy-stylish workshop-loft atmosphere where you can rummage through around 20 stalls for clothes, books and more, set to music from a Wurlitzer jukebox, and they also offer small snacks, good Hausbrandt coffee and tasty pie from the GoSweetBakery. Or you can choose to fill your belly beforehand already at the wonderful vegetarian brunch at the cool Turnhallen-Café, which also resides there ;-)

Kino unter Sternen
After last year’s unfortunate cancellation due to financial reasons, Kino unter Sternen at Karlsplatz is back this year, hurrah! The opening programme with lectures on the films begins at 20:30 every day, the films start afterwards at 21:30. The focus is on Austrian cinema – from older flicks like “Suzy Washington” to current ones like Barbara Albert’s “Licht”. A series on German-speaking filmmakers who were forced into exile by the Nazis completes the programme. Today they are screening the brilliant, if depressing, documentary “Jenseits des Krieges”.

55 Dates
Since the foundation of the mumok collection in the year 1959, the museum has accumulated around 10,000 works by roughly 1,600 artists. Just the mere thought of this plenitude is overwhelming! Fortunately, a curator team has taken up the task of selecting 55 highlights for the new exhibition “55 Dates” ;-) The result is a colourful ragbag show of works from Paul Klee and Pablo Picasso all the way to Andy Warhol, while also including lesser known names and artists that are still to be discovered. It certainly makes for an exciting “blind date” with art!

Frauen.Wahl.Recht!
This will be exciting! Petra Unger, connoisseur of Vienna and women, invites you on a walk following the footsteps of women’s suffrage. 100 years ago, female activists and representatives of the first domestic women’s movement contended successfully for female suffrage. In 1919, the first 8 women moved into Parliament. But who exactly were the protagonists? The tour between Rathaus and Grete Rehor Park (named after the first Austrian female minister!) presents inspiring female fighters for our rights and traces the footsteps of these female pioneers.

 Nathaniel Rateliff
Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats
Allegedly, US-singer Nathaniel Rateliff managed to soften up his wife with his self-written songs so much that she said “Yes” shortly after ;-) Back then, he was still solo, music-wise, and a little shy but by now, his live performances are always sold out. With “Night Sweats”, he’s also had a great band behind him for a while and together they bring a really good retro-sound to the stage. The sparse, melancholic folk that characterised Rateliff’s solo work has grown into a soul-sated band-sound, a hit not just for FM4 Indie station fans! Today at WUK, listen in here.

Pflanz der Vampire
Incredibly hilarious and with bite: in a funny “creepsical” at Tschauner, a couple of trippy characters are auditioning for a role in the musical “Dance of the Vampires”. A newly-minted musical actress, a confident, lascivious diva, an ambitious but rather inane actor and an eccentric musical performer. And then, a bit late, the (real) vampire Lutz shows up to the audition as well. Eventually, after the most chaotic casting process, all five of them are accepted and thus the super merry chaos during the rehearsals and the premiere runs its course.

 Sevie natural care
Sevie natural skincare
“You can leave out almost everything”, Sevie-founder Shanna Mirnig was quick to realise when she started making natural cosmetics herself several years ago. The scent of her salves, crèmes and deodorants only stems from essential oils which are, as all other ingredients, organic and herbal only. She produces everything in her own workshop that she just moved into, which also serves as shop. New are a skin-soothing aloe vera-spray and a dog series, apart from her mild, wonderfully scented care products. You can also order online and have everything delivered directly to your home the same day!

 Glashaus
Das Glashaus
Here, the expression “light-flooded” really gains a whole new dimension: with a ceiling height of seven metres and fully glazed walls, the newly opened restaurant in the quarter “Viertel Zwei” – near the entrance to green Prater – is visually pretty impressive. And it’s nicely furnished too. Between shabby chic style and herbs, they serve Mediterranean and Austrian cuisine from breakfast to dinner. With lots of vegetables (baked beetroots with herb mash), fish, and interesting steak variations at night. And there are as many as two terraces for when there is warm weather. Plus: really friendly service!
