editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Although he is considered the founder of modern art, he sold only one painting throughout his life: As is well known, Vincent van Gogh only became a world star after his early death (at the age of 37). Starting this week, you can now experience the impressionist and his paintings in a way that is new. And quite spectacular! Thanks to sophisticated technology, huge projections of images in sensational clarity are possible nowadays – and that's exactly what the art production “Van Gogh Alive” does. Over 3,000 pictures and photos, enlarged room-high, will transform MetaStadt into a total work of art until February. The whole thing is accompanied by classical music and fragrances (!), visitors walk at their own pace through the life and colourful world of Vincent van Gogh. This has nothing to do with a “normal” museum experience, but rather with the feeling of being drawn directly into his paintings. If you need a break from the Corona mess – here you are guaranteed to forget reality!

Wishing you an impressionist week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Advent at Blumengärten Hirschstetten
In the Hirschstetten flower gardens, Advent starts a little earlier than on the calendar. But since it's so pretty there, you can't be mad about it ;-) This year, the traditional Christmas exhibition is called Post ans Christkind, and all the greens in the various glass houses are decorated artistically and festively. This year there are 2 Advent markets! At the Natürlich-Christkindl-Market you can enjoy organic treats like Buchteln, chestnuts, baked potatoes or chocolate pumpkin seeds. At the traditional Christmas market, though, you find Baumkuchen, giant Krapfen and handicrafts. Very nice!

 Alnour
AlNour
Oh, it’s getting dark so early right now! That's why, ladies, we have to learn an Arabic word today: It's called “Al Nour” and means “the light”. And it is also the name of a great women's project in Marrakech. In the Moroccan Handicraft Association, physically impaired women embroider clothing, fashion and home accessories. The textiles are really beautiful – and shine all the way to Vienna this weekend. For three days, AlNour makes camp in the Safran & Cie shop – with the finest table and bed linen, tops and cushions, hand-embroidered with Fassi, trout and polka-dot ornaments.

 Federica Ferrari
Federica Ferrari
A woman who, according to her name, could be cartoon heroine Carmen Sandiego's sister ;-) But she is actually a very talented jazz singer with Italian roots. Federica Ferrari comes from Venice, sang in the gospel choir there and was regularly invited to the Christmas concert in the Vatican – but gospel was never quite her thing. Love brought Ferrari to Vienna. She met her second great love while studying jazz singing: Bertl Mayer and his mouth harmonica. In the meantime, saxophone, piano, guitar, bass and drums were added: The jazz ensemble is perfect. Today at Sargfabrik!

Hula hoop workshop
Childhood dreams come true! Hula hooping is not only great fun, it's also a great workout. If you're not sure anymore how to circle your hips so that the hoop turns, you're not alone! That's why we have this nice workshop. Here you learn (again) how to do it properly: both the classic hoop on the hips and the circling around various joints. Once you're back into the swing of things, you will learn a few dance moves with the hoop in the group, and at the end you'll be able to do a little Hula hoop choreography. Hoops can be borrowed on site!

Advent market at the Heurigen? The Schreiberhaus in Neustift is a well-known address for a (or more;-) summery glass of wine and caraway roast from the cabinet. This weekend, the tavern is hosting a small pop-up craft market: artistic macramé, make your own Advent wreath, handmade jewellery by Lisa Harlander, make your own hair scrunchies with a master tailor, natural cosmetics, home accessories made from recycled wood... From eleven-thirty there is also a punch happy hour: 1+1 for free! Makes it feel a little bit like Heuriger, after all ;-)

Locations of Jewish Life in Vienna
Exile research up close: Together with the authors of the book “Jüdisches Ottakring und Hernals”, you explore the districts with a sharpened eye. A temple, prayer houses, social clubs: It was impossible to imagine the districts without the Jewish population, they actively shaped the cityscape – until the cruel persecution started in 1938. On the basis of selected stations, the two narrators Evelyn Adunka and Gabriele Anderl lead us through the Jewish district history. The 1934 census says that more than 7,100 Jews lived in Ottakring and Hernals at that time. Free!

Advent at Donauturm
Along the Danube Island it often gets very quiet in winter. A new Christmas market with hip, local arts and crafts is venturing out near the Donauturm and has exciting exhibitors in tow. My Magpie makes jewellery with the help of a 3D printer and looks for original design models like the façade of the Loos Haus on Michaelerplatz. There are also very pretty, minimalist illustrations of Vienna's districts by DSTRCT, and at Flobox you can purchase preserved flower arrangements and Advent wreaths! Oh, and don't forget the chocolate strawberries.

Rebecca Anouche: À Paris
Voila, a little Paris feeling in Vienna. Singer Rebecca Anouche was born in Paris, grew up in London and has lived in Vienna for more than 20 years. Today she pays tribute to the French chansonnier Yves Montand and the Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, inventor of the Tango Nuevo. Both were born in 1921, so they would have been 100 years old this year. Manu Mazé, who also comes from Paris, plays the accordion and makes the two jubilarians posthumous friends in spirit in his arrangements – it's hard to believe that the two never met during their lifetime!

Now that's some really important news: today is Sardine Day! Now that’s something, isn’t it? And because the Nuri company, founded in Portugal in 1920, has turned the canned oil sardine into a cult product, we are celebrating today with a cooking course via Zoom. Together with the Vienna-based chef Paolo Vitale, Mediterranean dishes are prepared step by step under video guidance, and of course you can also communicate and interact virtually. Motte Motte
A true breath of fresh air for vintage aficionados! Motte Motte is reminiscent of the vintage shops in Berlin, not least because of the concept that is very popular there: you pay per kilo, namely 30 euros. Motte Motte is not as crowded as the second-hand shops along Neubaugasse, here you are able to keep a good overview of what's available. And that’s definitely an impressive selection: Levis jeans from decades long gone, trench coats that could rival Columbo, colourful 1990s rain jackets and cuddly vintage jumpers. Here you can really hunt down some cool bargains, keyword: silk shirt ;-)

Cafe Kriemhild
When the old coffee house was lately taken over by trendy caterers, there was a lot of concern. All unnecessary! Now you have hip 60s chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling and the inevitable rampant monstera at the entrance, but this has still remained a wonderfully unagitated coffee house. The old-fashioned seating niches are ideal during Corona and the tasty “Grilled Cheese Sandwich” is served in a paper sack. In the next room, the old billiard tables have been re-covered, students, folder readers and elegant ladies share the space. That’s how to Vienna!
