"Heya Girls!"
Vienna in the 1950s and 60s: After the horrors of war, everyone is looking forward to more freedom, more leisure time and seemingly unlimited economic growth. The optimism of the new age is palpable throughout the city – even today! Tom Koch has tracked down the vintage dreams together with photographer Stephan Doleschal and packed them into a book. Last autumn, the Wien Museum showed the photos of the smart architectural jewels with the nostalgia factor. “Mid-Century Vienna” presented 100 wow locations: open-air swimming pools, the Volksgarten Pavillon, the iconic Gartenbaukino, but also a nuclear reactor (still active today) in the middle of Vienna! And why am I telling you this here? Because the photographs from the exhibition – many of them in really large formats – are now being auctioned off to benefit the VinziRast! You can bid until 25 February (starting at 50 €) and, with a bit of luck, buy one of the cool photos.

Wishing you a nostalgic week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Edvard Munch. In Dialogue
Of course we all know his “Scream”. The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch was one of the first expressionist artists – and the Albertina is dedicating its spring exhibition to him. However, it not only shows over 60 of his works, but also lets the painter enter into dialogue with seven contemporary artists who were inspired by him! In 1984, for example, Andy Warhol made silkscreen prints of Munch's works, and the German artist Georg Baselitz painted forest landscapes inspired by Munch's style. Today is the virtual vernissage, but from tomorrow you can visit the exhibition on site!

 Repertoire
Sale at Repertoire
Weird, pretty things. Repertoire is the ultimate shop for things that you didn't even know you wanted: cat-shaped USB sticks, astronaut bed linen, enamel plates with a suction bell print or the pretty notebooks from the Italian office supplies brand Legami – here you can find everything from pretty odds and ends to design objects. Now Repertoire is clearing out its stock, and there is a 50% discount on many items – especially stationery and unique pieces! The sale will last until 28 February, then they will do a lot of rearranging: for Repertoire has recently fallen in love with Portuguese design...

Mnozil Brass: Phoenix
The gentlemen of Mnozil Brass are a formidable brass ensemble. And yet so much more than that! The troupe's incredible interplay is just as fascinating as the rousing choreographies and the irrepressible desire to improvise. And the charming brass musicians are entertaining, too: slapstick meets black humour, and listening to them simply makes you happy through and through. In their latest programme, the septet blows us out of the pandemic gloom and asks the really important questions, such as: “Why would we rather be unchaste than abstinent? And why the hell is it often funnier at night than during the day?” Listen in here!

Hand Made Story Sale
Barbara Alli's colourful African designs have been delighting us for a long time: beautiful clothes for ladies and gents, jewellery, and even home accessories are now available in the colourful shop of the lively all-rounder (she is also a singer, songwriter and dancer). Born in Ghana and raised in Nigeria, the Viennese-by-choice uses fairly traded African fabrics for all of her beautiful things. And all of them are now available at a discount of 40 percent! Until 28 February, you can stock up on dresses, cushions, curtains and the like that seem to have been bathed in a sea of colours. Nice!

Lars Eidinger: Live/Evil
Lars Eidinger is known as the current Everyman of the Salzburg Festival. As Insta users know, the actor also has another passion. Eidinger almost obsessively photographs (his) everyday life. His view of the world is often quirky, different and sometimes funny. He posts the photos on Instagram – and they can currently be seen “in real life” for the first time in Vienna. Eidinger took his first photo at the age of six: a hamster stuck in a toilet paper roll. Now he photographs a homeless person lying in front of the display of a bed shop. On view at the newly opened Alba Gallery!

 Charakter Couture
Viennese Fabric Flea market
At Cha-rak-ter Couture, you usually get unusual evening dresses: classically cut, made of African fabrics. But Christina Schatzeder's shop studio is also a showroom for concept store pieces by colleagues. And even more important: a tailor's shop! Because the fabric remnants from said tailoring and past collections are looking for a new home, this weekend is a fabric flea market! Silk, linen and cotton, but also some vintage fabrics and pure new wool coats are up for grabs. And since they want to get rid of absolutely everything, the prices are almost shockingly low!

International Accordion Festival
Finally someone tells it like it is: live streams are nice, but can never replace a live concert. Today is the opening gala of the Accordion Festival in the Stadtsaal, and if you're not there, you can't see it. Which would be quite a shame, because the Swiss accordion soloist Viviane Chassot and the Austrian zither virtuoso Franziska Fleischanderl play wonderful pieces from classical to jazz and modern. There will also be a piece by the famous Argentinean tango composer Astor Piazzolla. He is 100 + 1 years old this year, and his music runs through the entire programme of the festival!

Temari for Beginners
Temari is Japanese for handball – and an almost 1400-year-old Japanese craft. Temari balls are wrapped with thread and embroidered. Depending on the embroidery pattern and the wishes of the embroiderer, they are supposed to bring luck, love, friendship and loyalty. Traditionally, Japanese parents gave them to their children on New Year's Day. It's a little late for that this year, but we always like to weave good wishes! In this workshop, they will embroider a ball with a chrysanthemum design: The many-petalled flower stands for luck and a long life. And it’s also super-pretty!

Objects at Volkskundemuseum
In a museum, objects on display are usually explained. The Volkskunde Museum is now turning the tables: In a free workshop, you can make wild associations with various museum pieces! A roast wagon leads to Hades and a salt barrel awakens childhood memories from deepest France. Whether poetic, visionary or simply funny – there are no limits to creativity! A figure stove suddenly bears a resemblance to Marilyn Monroe, a sonnet is sung to a raincoat. The results can then be heard by others in the museum next to the respective object. Cool!

Whiteness As Property
The richest people in the world are white. The new exhibition at the Künstlerhaus deals with property in relation to racism: slavery, poor working conditions and expropriation made and still make it difficult for many non-white people to lead a life without deprivation. Art can make manifold things with this subject: Tania Candiani has recorded the work songs of former Cuban forced labourers. Robert Gabri's installation is a space that does not exist: an interior room of Roma in Slovakia. There is free admission until today!

Ti Amo 4
The funny-eccentric Italo-mafia-musical at the Metropol goes into the 4th round! In the latest episode, the question of what is to become of the “Da Capone” bar is open: Franco Marone wants to keep it as a revue bar for the Italo-Oldies, junior boss Toni Marone wants to use it as a stage for his magic act, and the Russian mafia, with whom the Marones are highly in debt, wants an Italo disco! One thing is for sure: The Viennese Marones once again have some problems on their hands, and some songs on their lips! For more important than the story are the many hit songs and rousing Italo hits. Almost like a holiday.

Mixing Cocktails at Sans Souci
Some people think that mixing cocktails is a science in itself. Today, you can learn a little mixology from an expert! The chef de bar at the chic Hotel Sans Souci invites beginners to the hotel's rooftop flat and teaches them the art of good cocktail mixing. An aperitif, a fancy cocktail and a digestive are shaken and stirred. In between, there's a steak sandwich to fortify you, and afterwards, of course, the creations are served immediately – with a view over the rooftops of Vienna. For those who have acquired a taste for it, there is also an advanced course and a master class!

The Meinklang Demeter farm on Neusiedlersee already tried out a Viennese farm shop during the lockdowns, now the pop-up has become a permanent shop – stylishly furnished with lots of wood! The Michlits family has moved their bakery here, and in addition to very fresh bread and pastries from their own grain, they also offer fine wines, milk, a selection of vegetables, herbs and flowers, and a butcher's shop like in the old days: Here you can get 10dag schnitzel and fresh minced meat, unpackaged. And there's also a small bistro with breakfast, snacks and a wine bar. Really nice!

Ella's Twins
The Vorgartenmarkt has two advantages: It has a really airy space layout, so you rarely end up in a crowd here. And it has now been boasting an excellent gastronomic scene for quite a while. This already starts with breakfast, for example at “Ella's Twins”. The adorable mini-patisserie specialises in macarons and sinful cakes. But it also makes breakfast lovers happy. In addition to coffee, hot chocolate and selected teas, lovingly prepared breakfasts are served – on an étagère, to match the ambience. Freshly baked croissants, pastries from Gragger and Paris feeling included!
