"Heya Girls!"
With almost 12 million members, they are the largest minority in Europe – and yet Roma communities suffer from prejudice and widespread discrimination. As has been the case for centuries, their access to education, employment, adequate housing or basic health care is still difficult. International Roma Day is celebrated annually on 8 April – a global day of action to draw attention to the situation of Roma. On the one hand, discrimination against the ethnic group is brought into focus on this day, and on the other hand, Roma culture is celebrated. In Vienna, too, of course! At the jazz club Porgy & Bess on Thursday there will first be an international panel discussion and then a concert – this year as a live stream due to the pandemic. The well-known guitarist and jazz guru Harri Stojka will play a special programme of Roma music with his Roma music ensemble – and bring the history of his people closer to the audience.

Kahán Art Space
With a strict door policy, Kahán Art Space from Budapest can open its Vienna branch today despite the lockdown: Only those who are pre-registered are allowed in! Founded in 2016, the gallery promotes young art that addresses social and political issues. Like the opening exhibition “The Cages” by Daniel Rycharski, who deals with problems in his native Poland: LGBTQ rights and the homophobic church, conservatism on the rise, the liaison of politics and religion and latent anti-Semitism. And as soon as it’s possible again, the adjoining Café Kraus will also open in the gallery.

Shlomit Butbul sings Erich Fried
When lovers are at a loss for words, they can find them in Erich Fried. There is hardly a wedding that does not include his poem “Was es ist” (What it is) – because it hits you right in the feels! Composer Joe Pinkl has set some of Fried's works to music, tracing the nuances in texts about happiness, unhappiness and love and weaving text and music into a new whole. A video stream enchants the ears today with the poetry concert, for which Shlomit Butbul (Jazz Gitti's daughter) gives voice and expression to the pieces. As a singer and actress, she embodies the person searching for love.

Outdoor Gallery in the Shop Window
Happens quite a lot, actually, that a woman walks past an advertising poster and thinks: women don't look like that. The reason is that these pictures are mainly designed by men – the female gaze is lost in this flood of images. So the Austrian Fashion Association is now showing a “different” photo exhibition in its display window: the show “W” consists only of portraits of women photographed exclusively by women! Throughout April, works by Ina Aydogan and Anna Breit are on display in light boxes to be discovered by strollers and flaneurs.

You had better not blink! At the renowned Canadian Cirque Eloize, they have elevated thrills into an art form, so you wouldn’t want to miss anything ;-) One of its great shows is now available as a free online stream: “Cirkopolis” cleverly combines acrobatics with certain elements of film, theatre and poetry. The illusion is made perfect by means of video projections and a stage set inspired by Fritz Lang's silent film classic Metropolis. The artists perform incredible acrobatic feats and daredevil leaps in a futuristic-seeming urban jungle between dream and reality.

Since we from the “Eastern Bloc” are back in lockdown, Monica Weinzettl and Gerold Rudle have also reactivated their home cabaret and put being locked up at home with their partner online as a vlog (video blog) – pretty funny! The “couch cabaret” goes online every two days on YouTube, offering some insights into the relationship life of the cabaret couple as well as access to unplayed sketches. And Gerold Rudle tries to tell a joke, which usually doesn't work. Oh, and a cat called Red also appears from time to time – and remains silent.

Online Zen Mediation
Just sitting there calmly and serenely can be quite a trying thing for your patience. Zen meditation is about experiencing the moment and being aware of the it without wanting to change it. Sounds quite tempting. How this works in practice can be tried out today in the online meditation of the Mishoan Zen Centre. The eyes are closed, thoughts are allowed to arise in silence and are then supposed to move on again. The relaxing exercise is aöways practised together once a week. In the Facebook live stream, experts explain details and reveal interesting facts about the brewery. Of course, it's also interactive: comments and questions are answered during the stream. A Thousand Ways – A Telephone Call
A hot line into the Volkstheater: in order to connect with the audience despite the lockdown, the telephone theatre of the New York theatre group “600 Highwaymen” has been translated. People book a timeslot online and receive a mobile phone number with their ticket. A female computer voice answers the call, but there is another person on the line – a stranger! The two of you follow the instructions, answer questions and go on an imaginary journey in your mind. Slowly a picture of the callers will emerge through fleeting revelations and the sound of an invisible voice.
