"Heya Girls!"
That’s nice: We’re allowed to be shamelessly curious now! Allowed to poke our noses in someone else’s apartment and knock at strangers’ doors unannounced! This weekend, 82 (often private) buildings in Vienna that are normally not open to public open their doors – and offer us a glance behind the fronts. This initiative is called "Open House Vienna" - the architectural project was originally conceived in London and takes place in 30 cities from New York to Tel Aviv each year. Open House shows buildings with a special history, particular flair, fascinating architecture or an interesting concept. This also includes houses in the outer districts, after all the inner city is not the only place with architectural treasures. Get to know the Laudon water castle, the Loft 2 with its lake in the middle of the 2nd district (photo), the former office building of the imperial and royal Austrian Bank, the neighbourhood hotel Karmelitermarkt and the first Viennese pop-up dorms. Maps help you to create your personal tour - and, of course, the glance through 82 keyholes is free of charge!

Wishing you a lovely week

City harvest in the open-air supermarket
Dig out, wash, wrap – this is what shopping looks like in the open-air supermarket. This year, the premises of the former coffin manufactory Atzgersdorf have turned into an agriculture park for everyone, where fresh vegetables such as chilli, courgettes and herbs are grown. Fresh eggs from happy hens living on the premises and honey are available as well. Instead of a shopping trolley you’ll take a wheelbarrow, you pay in donations and you are also welcome to help gardening. Today, the rich harvest is celebrated, with guided tours, workshops and open-air food stalls. Plus live Indie pop and gypsy jazz. Awesome!

A Tribute To Johnny Cash
Ladies, be ready for some truly beautiful music about death, love, passion, injustice and pride tonight. 13 years after Johnny Cash’s death, his Viennese community marks his day of death in September with undiminished passion, paying tribute to their idol at the Reigen. And this is going to be a top-level celebration – with a very interesting innovation: Michael Köhlmeier, Austria’s number one novelist, will sing Cash songs! Seriously! In the second part of the evening, the Lost Compadres, the probably best performers of the late Johnny Cash, are back on stage. Click here to listen to the great “Man in Black“.

Natalie Rox Shopclosing
Oh no, the town will soon lose a great shoe shop! Sad to say, Natalie Rox at Zollergasse is closing down for good at the end of the month. But now the good news: hundreds of pairs of shoes will soon be homeless and are searching for new wearers, at truly low prices. Until 17 September the brand-new autumn/winter collection, including pieces such as Bling Bling Boot or Noir Over Knee, is sold off at prices reduced by up to 50 per cent. Wow, this seems to be the culinary highlight of late summer! This weekend, the Markterei makes a guest appearance in the park in front of the 25hours Hotel – with a full line up of food stalls, street food and bars. With carp sausage, kangaroo hot dogs and Brazilian Plata burgers there’ll definitely be no unfulfilled eating desire, as extravagant as it may be. And, following the motto of the Markterei, you can also do your weekend shopping here: You’ll find fresh fish, honey, ham, herbs and local wines. The park feast is accompanied by several live music acts. Cool!

Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel in Vienna
This is truly spectacular! A new exhibition brings Michelangelo’s ceiling frescos of the Sistine Chapel to the Viennese Votivkirche in their original size. In the Vatican, the famous works are applied at a height of 20 metres, which makes it hard to observe them thoroughly. The Viennese master photographer Erich Lessing photographed the artworks in the 1990s; back from Canada, they are now exhibited in Austria for the first time. 34 colourfast and gigantic canvas art prints are shown, the “Last Judgement” measures more than 160 sqm. Visitors may get to know the history of every work via earphones.

The vegetable orchestra – „Onionoise“
Scurrile and worldwide unique: Before each performance the Viennese vegetable orchestra chops new instruments. And then they produce interesting sounds out of the freshly created parsley violins, radish flutes and pumpkin kettledrums. Occasionally, the instruments are supported by the sounds of kitchen utensils such as blenders or graters. The organic pop music of the 12-person collective also invites its audience to see, smell and taste – vegetable soup after the concert included! And now you may wonder what carrots & co sound like ;-) Pre-listen here.

Jealousy
Oh yes, as the saying goes: Jealousy is a grievous passion that jealously seeks what causes grief. Not funny at all, if you are the one concerned, but a good subject for a super-funny theatre evening! In her piece “Eifersucht”, the bestseller author Esther Vilar tells the story of three women who, full of passion and without a qualm, fight for a man – with wit and subtle humour. The object of desire: Laszlo, a successful lawyer, in his mid-fifties – and, of course, married ;-) What follows is a passionately staged relationship tangle à la “Sex and the City“ and “Desperate Housewifes“. Bitchy and good!

Bernie Rieder’s new cooking book
When Bernie Rieder cooks, the CitySpotterGirl’s mouth is always watering. And since the time we were in a cooking jury together, I know: this guy is also super-funny! That means: tonight the kitchen remains cold, because the top chef presents his new cooking book. It’s about “Austrian cuisine – the classics”, in other words: Kaiserschmarrn, Schnitzel, Tafelspitz, newly interpreted in the typical Rieder style. And of course, the master himself will cook samples at the book presentation – this is going to be a tasty gourmet happening. By the way, you’ll find Rieder recipes to try at home on the portal!

Eligius Award 2016. Jewelry in Austria
Austria has an award for contemporary jewelry design: the Eligius Award, presented each year in Salzburg. The MAK now exhibits a selection of the unconventional pieces handed in by the crème de la crème of the Austrian jewelry scene for the price this year. This year’s winner Lena Grabher from Vorarlberg convinced the jury with her unconventional, partly 3D-printed, arm jewelry made of glass and plastic. 90 works of the designer Anna Heindl from the late 1970s to the present provide the exhibition with some extra glamour.

Mothwurf
Who really needs a kitschy frill Oktoberfest Dirndl? The chic store of the Styrian traditional label Mothwurf in the newly renovated Palais Batthyany provides the best proof that traditional costumes can also be absolutely elegant. Organza sashes and French laces decorate the exquisite Dirndl and the skirts, shirts, cute 50s dresses and jackets with eye-turner buttons are wonderfully offbeat. Very beautiful: the petticoats of hand-made Gobelin fabrics from Waldviertel. They are also available with Sisi motives, by the way – so tasteful that not only tourists but also Viennese love them.

Wirr am Brunnemarkt
At the moment, every trendy restaurant in New York needs a “rooftop” – a preferably huge roof terrace. This is why the Wirr would also be a hotspot in the Big Apple right now, not just at the Brunnenmarkt. We’ve known the Wirr in Burggasse for years, now the cool restaurant has a brother at the Yppenplatz. Yes, you can also sit inside the new market lodge. But the “place to be“ is the rooftop, occupying the whole roof. Take a seat on the colourful vintage furnishings and enjoy the creative cuisine (crispy fried chicken and purple sweet potatoes) and the breakfast, especially on Saturdays. Already cult.
