"Heya Girls!"
Yes ladies, we have now officially reached the I-need-presents-time. A perfect money-spending opportunity is offered by the WeihnachtsQuartier on the first Advent weekend. 1,000 square metres of design and more than 100 creative minds sell their treasures at the MQ, indoors and heated! So quite a bit of hustle and bustle, but also tons of great gifts such as smart fashion by Elke Freyrag, witty graphics by esca, concrete objects by room No9 or the ingenious rollovers by Kindl (photo). And yes, CitySpotterGirl will also be there for the three days – and has prepared some particularly beautiful books for you at her stand! You can buy all the reading material from CitySpotterGirl’s own publishing house Wundergarten, but also the books I have written for other publishers over the last two years: travel guides for Vienna and the surrounding area, the new gourmet bible for our favourite city, our hot-off-the-press book “Blütenrausch” and, of course, our classic “Das Wiener Musterbuch”. So come on over! I look forward to seeing you!

Wishing you an original week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

MuseumsQuartier, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna. 1-3 December. Free entry. Web

P.S. You can also buy CitySpotterGirl’s books online!

 Arthur Arbesser
Arthur Arbesser
He is Viennese, but prefers letting himself be inspired by the Milanese dolce vita. You can see this clearly in the wild patterns in sunny colours and graphic prints that Arthur Arbesser uses to turn not only clothing but also interior pieces such as tablecloths, napkins and the like into cheerful eye-catchers. These can be purchased for the last time today at his Viennese pop-up at Stoss im Himmel – the entire range of table linen as well as pieces from the current and past collections are available. A grandissima opportunity to get the right outfit all'italiana for yourself and the Xmas table!

this human world
10 festival days and 90 films in 6 cinemas: This year's “this human world” festival once again focuses on human rights in the form of feature films, documentaries and short films. And it does so, as usual, without moralising undertones but instead in a witty, thrilling and harrowing way. The film marathon opens today with “Les filles d'Olfa”, in which a mother loses her daughters to ISIS and is plunged into deep despair. Tomorrow, “This is National Wake” shows the rise of a colourful South African punk band risking it all to defy apartheid. The detailed programme is available online!

Several cinemas in Vienna. 30 November until 10 December. 9 € per film. Web

Sam’s Bar at Hamakom
The Jewish theatre Hamakom is always worth a visit, but even more so on Advent weekends! Every night, the cool theatre location in the Nestroysäle is transformed into a bar with dim lighting and seating tables, creating a unique, intimate off-Broadway feeling. Lea Kalisch will heat up the stage for the opening tonight, mixing styles and languages from rap to rumba and folk to feminism like a smoothie. And Senster Gob will tootle Jewish music and Balkan tunes until your dancing feet tingle so much that every chair becomes superfluous!

AlNour
Oh, it’s getting dark so early right now! That's why, ladies, we have to learn an Arabic word today: It's called “Al Nour” and means “the light”. And it is also the name of a great women's project in Marrakech. In the Moroccan Handicraft Association, physically impaired women embroider clothing, fashion and home accessories. The textiles are really beautiful – and shine all the way to Vienna this weekend. For 3 days, AlNour makes camp in the Safran & Cie shop – with the finest table and bed linen, scarves and cushions, hand-embroidered with Fassi, trout and polka-dot ornaments.

Susa Kreuzberger Christmas Sale
Austro-designer Susa Kreuzberger calls it “xmas-sale”, CitySpotterGirl calls it “Super-Jamboree-for-Last-Minute-Gifts” :-) But either way, you can still score timeless and, on top of it, high-quality eye-catcher pieces from the current and previous collections until 31 December! There's a discount of up to 70 percent on the winter models, such as floor-length, hand-painted dresses, wide coats to cosy up in or softly draped blouses, as well as on “older models”! I’ll bet you anything that we will be doing a bit of gift shopping for ourselves, too ;-)

Vocalodie
What does a Winter Wonderland sound like? The vocal ensemble Vocalodie knows! From the Renaissance to modern times, the young singers sing the a cappella repertoire up and down and take you on a wintry journey into dreamy winter woods. They immerse themselves in the glittering world of Beamish and Holst and dance to the music of Walton and the King's Singers. While works by Byrd and Pärt are reminiscent of icy gusts of wind, the warm sounds of familiar folk music paint a picture of a crackling open fire. Gets even the biggest grinches in Xmas-mood ;-)

Painting with Spices
What was common practice for our ancestors can also look very stylish in the here and now. The Kulturzentrum Wallenstein agrees and teaches us today how to use spices to mix splendidly bright colours. Paprika powder, curry, turmeric or cinnamon, for example, are mixed with water to create a mixture that you can then use to let off steam creatively. The end result is not only pretty and unusual, but also has a wonderful scent! No previous experience is necessary and after the painting there's a little art party with the wind quartet Wind.obona!

The name alone suggests that this event will be a feast for the eyes. Delphine Léger opens her petite galerie in Neulerchenfelderstraße for the duration of two days to present pretty things for our walls and shelves together with the talented artists Stephanie Galliez, Birgit Kiennast and Readykakao. Making Origami Stars
Fold and relax. Do it yourself and still be in nice company. Creating something new, but not needing anything new for it. That's roughly the idea behind the Origami Star Hour at magdas Hotel. As the perfect start to Advent, you can create the most beautiful squash folds, mountain folds and valley folds and make festive stars using the Japanese art of paper folding. The result can be used nicely as a sustainable table decoration or small gift. And if you need a little refreshment before putting your dexterity to the test: Brunch at magdas restaurant is always a good idea!

From the creative corner, you can buy linen garments by Gerda Kohlmayr and hand-knitted items by Veronika Persche.  Gottfried Helnwein
Gottfried Helnwein. Reality and Fiction
A creepy Mickey Mouse, a blood-smeared bandaged girl, a disfigured child's face – the works of Gottfried Helnwein’s are dedicated to the unattractive sides of life in a fascinating manner. The results are hyper-realistic pictures whose central motif is the figure of the vulnerable and defenceless child as a proxy of sorts, one who embodies all psychological and societal anxieties. It makes your blood run cold, but despite that you still want to look. And you can do this particularly well at the Albertina's XL exhibition to mark the artist's 75th birthday!

Toxische Pommes
A lawyer with a penchant for the ugly side of life. That's Irina aka “Toxische Pommes”, who started licking the wounds of her recently ended toxic relationship on TikTok at the beginning of the pandemic. She now regularly creates 15-second satirical videos and unmasks Austrian society for incorporating racism, sexism and classism into everyday life. With her stage programme “Ketchup, Mayo und Ajvar”, she is taking her first steps into the world of cabaret and hopes that she can be funny for longer than 15 seconds. We are curious to find out!

Das Spiel
Letting a stranger look deep into your soul can be as frightening as it is exciting. With illusionist and mentalist Philipp Oberlohr, it's fascinating! During his performance today, he will read the minds of audience members and know things he can't possibly know – from birthdays to the names of old school friends. But if at first you think the maestro is pulling the strings, it soon becomes clear that he too is just a puppet. Only those who come to join the game will know how this unpredictable mind-reading experience will end ...

Not another fine dining pop-up
That's exciting! And certainly tasty too. For a fortnight, top restaurateurs such as Agnes Karrasch from “She Chef” and Nino Fjordside Andersen will be dropping in our favourite city for “Speed Dining”. We are the ones that will get to enjoy the eating, though – and that right at the kitchen counter, where new dishes made from the chefs' local ingredients are served every 6 minutes. There is no menu and the professionals only decide what to serve when they see the guests. The aim of the food party is to breathe a dash of casualness into fine dining. Not cheap, but guaranteed to surprise ;-)

Bye, bye Linusch
The playful button plackets and pleated inserts are probably the trademark of the unique Linusch pieces. And on top of that, the wide trousers, blouses and dresses are also colourful and super comfy, and the unusual berets are definitely the fashionable icing on the cake for every piece. Unfortunately (!) the stylish pieces won't be up for grabs much longer because Tehilla Gitterle has to close her shop. So every Wednesday until 22 December, you will have a chance to stock up from head to toe one last time – and that at reduced mini prices. It's well worth it!

Nikolo, Krampus and Christmas stuff
Drunken Nikolos, beaten-up Krampus and Christmas markets ready for demolition! Still no plans for St. Nicholas' Eve? Stefan Franke can help: the passionate researcher of old newspaper stories has set out in search of historical articles about Christmas. But if you're expecting something contemplative and romantic, you're wrong. Instead, there are reports of all kinds of disasters. And because it's all about the season of love, there's also a look at the singles exchanges of the time, where people were looking for dashing Santas and pretty Christkinds. Very funny!

Omnian Tea
Something for the soul this week. Omnian Tea is not just a new tea shop. In fact, founder Lian rather appears like a lovely shaman, whose impressive collection includes the perfect oolong or shu pu'er for every kind of mood. However, they only unfold their full effect in the right vessel, which is why you will also find plenty of handmade tea crockery in the shop with its natural industrial look, from coarse clay ceramics to fine Chinese porcelain. Lian's “drinkable perfumes” are particularly exciting, and if you would like to know what they taste like, it's best to visit the tea expert yourself or take part in one of her tea meditations!

Salon Aurelie
It's actually surprising that there hadn't been one in Vienna before. But now we have one: a Guglhupf Bar! In the elegant Hotel Rosewood, a beautiful parlour has been transformed into a café. On comfortable, elegant armchairs in front of hand-painted walls by artist Marie Hartig, you can escape the hustle and bustle of the city and indulge in Guglhupf in a variety of guises. Classic as a marble cake, heavenly as a chocolate version, but also savoury. Surely nobody has ever eaten Guglhupf with beetroot before. They serve cocktails and selected teas with it. Not exactly cheap, but just the tad of luxury we urgently need at the moment.
