"Heya Girls!"
I consider the garden of the Belvedere a little bit as my private garden. Somewhat immodest, I know. But the magnificent grounds are just within walking distance of the office, so I like to take my evening stroll through the park after work, gossip a bit with the statues and look down on the city centre Canaletto style. The park with its two palaces, masterfully created by Prince Eugene, is 300 years old this year – and to mark the occasion, a big Belvedere Spring Festival is taking place this weekend. Which means, first of all: free admission to all three locations – Upper Belvedere, Lower Belvedere and Belvedere21. And then: action. You can do some gardening together with the Austrian Federal Gardens or (a unique opportunity!) discover the otherwise closed chapel of the Upper Belvedere. There are also guided tours of the exhibitions, concerts and performances. And no one has to walk around the grounds hungry. The café in the Upper Belvedere has a large outdoor dining area. And on the north side of the Upper Belvedere, food trucks will offer delicacies.

Wishing you a baroque week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Heimliche Idioten
Amazingly detailed reviews of shower curtains, existential questions in advice forums or spam mails that promise a giant dick in strange sentence structure: All texts that disappear at the edges of our perception, but often describe reality quite well. It is precisely after these unintentionally poetic texts that the author duo Milena Michalek and Sahba Sahebi roamed the net and imagined the people behind them. Their play “Heimliche Idioten” (secret idiots) is aimed at all those seeking advice and the secret idiot in all of us. The premiere is today!

 Elisabeth Wild
Elisabeth Wild: Imagination Factory
At the mumok, visitors are currently taking a trip to the rainforest, or rather to Guatemala – Elisabeth Wild's last home. The retrospective focuses on her iconic collages, 365 in number, which are supposed to represent a year's work. For the Vienna-born artist worked on a collage every day! The abstract works, sometimes reminiscent of Bauhaus, are presented in a labyrinth of pastel cardboard walls between which you just love to get lost. By the way: if you go on to the Secession, you will currently come across the works of Vivian Suter, Wild's daughter!

But let's get one thing straight: with avant-garde cuts, skin-tight bodysuits, lots of cut-outs and transparent materials, the chic outfits are not for the faint-hearted. Festwochen Opening at Rathausplatz
When music is played in every corner, park, square and pub, it’s clear: the Festwochen have started! Today the spectacle celebrates its grand opening on what is likely the most beautiful stage, between the magnificent facades of Vienna's City Hall and the Burgtheater. And one thing is already clear: each performance this year is like a well-stocked box of chocolates, a little work of art. Acrobatics meets classical music, Vivaldi meets Screamin' Jay Hawkins, string quintet meets break dance, poetry meets flamenco and beat boxing meets chanson. And that's just the beginning!

Vienna Refugee Ball
The ball season is over, but one special dance event is still happening. You can combine pleasure with social responsibility at the 29th Refugee Ball at the Rathaus. In addition to the typical multi-culti atmosphere with international musicians, this year's ball commemorates its founder, Willi Resetarits, who died in an accident last year. One of the reasons why the programme will be extra-super: From Afro-fusion by Izethekeli to Balkan beats by the Turumtay Zarić Trio and the Iranian women's choir “Awaye Azadi” – successful musical international understanding!

Cinema is for couch potatoes, as if! The University of Vienna and the City of Vienna have put together a colourful film programme that will be shown free of charge at public locations – provided you’re ready to pedal. Because the electricity that keeps the projection running is 100% man-made, so there are three bikes at each location that have to be pedalled through-out. At the same time, students from the fields of theatre, film and media studies relate their research to the respective films. Augustin
An exciting revival is taking place today at Theater Akzent! Because 23 years after its first release as a radio play, “Augustin” by Wolfgang Ambros, Joesi Prokopetz and Manfred Tauchen is coming back in front of the curtain as a classic Viennese singspiel. For this, the iconic mix of drama, song and dance has been adapted for the stage and expanded to include many well-known Ambros hits such as “Zentralfriedhof”, “Zwickt's mi” or “Watzmann”. A live band provides suitable sounds, of course, but the real highlight is clearly the original author Joesi Prokopetz in the role of the “Pestknecht”. Must-see!

Mariedl – Selfies with a giantess
This eternal gawping lust for otherness and capital greed with the staging of the human body... Has become even worse with Instagram & co, but it has always existed. Maria Fassnauer, alias Mariedl, was born in Tyrol in 1879, for instance. She was known for her height – and so she was exhibited like an object and artificially made even taller with costumes and stilts. The actress Maxi Blaha is now bringing Mariedl back to life. Incidentally, at a location that is just as special as the play itself, namely in the historic lecture hall of the Josephinum. Worth seeing!

Fashion for the stage
Sumo-Joppe meets gold bonnet, burka mask meets corset and Shinto hairstyle meets cardinal's uniform – if there is one thing Monika von Zallinger's theatre costumes are not, it's ordinary! This starts with her design drawings, from which the figures seem to jump out. Sometimes they stand statuesque next to each other, sometimes they are dynamic and playful – and you can always guess the appropriate scene. In the Theater Museum, you can now see 100 of Zallinger's drawings, which she created for Mozart's “Marriage of Figaro” or Schnitzler's “Reigen”, among others.

La sirène des tropiques
What a love story! In the exotic musical silent film “La sirène de tropiques”, Jazz Age legend Josephine Baker had one of her few acting appearances. As a native of a Polynesian island, she falls in love with the Frenchman André Berval, played by Pierre Batcheff, who, however, loves a Parisian woman to whom he chooses to return. Josephine follows him to Paris anyway and finds her true calling as a musician. Today, Heidelinde Grazel on accordion and Melissa Coleman on cello add musical spice to the love drama. The show starts at 20:00!

The Treasury
What do you call it when you put your store in a palace? “Beyond the ordinary”! This is also the motto of Stefanie Hofer and Claudia Maschke's new design paradise. In the magnificent masonry of Palais Harrach, the two fuse avant-garde fashion design with refined interior styling, preferably in Japanese, Nordic and Italian styles. Dim lighting, earthy tones and natural materials transport you into a hyper-design grotto, until you are lit back into reality by the glass facades facing the Palais inner courtyard. French music is playing in the background, eclairs are shining in the glass cabinet and the menu offers French-Lebanese dishes.
