"Heya Girls!"
Mostly men-free, eye-strainingly loud colours and provocative: the photos of fashion photographer Pol Kurucz have been published in Vogue as well as Elle and Glamour. According to self-description “feminism meets the absurdity with which God created the contemporary woman” in his jazzy photos. Since his transition to photography, the autodidact and Brazilian-by choice, formerly a financial manager, prefers to portray women and challenges contemporary norms with his pictures. His eccentric pop iconographies can be placed somewhere between housewife idyll, beauty obsession, black power, fetish, and manga. Now 15 of his currents works can be seen at his first solo exhibition in Austria. The photos have been developed as special Metal Prints – which makes them pop even more. Conclusion: a must-see, but better bring sunglasses to protect your peepers ;-)
Wishing you a jolly-gaudy week,

Ballatino at Lillis Ballroom
What the Milonga is to tango dancers, the rumba is to salseras. And at dance studio Lillis Ballroom, it’s the “Ballatino”. Which is also at the center of today’s dance night: a cheery, uncomplicated Latin music mix awaits a mixed crowd from professional Enriques to hobby Shakiras, where you can shake it to your heart’s content. They’re playing tango and salsa, but also exotic dances like bachata, kizomba, or zouk – all that makes your feet move. And in order to sway, swirl, and stalk sure-footed and with at least a basic sense of rhythm there’s a free trial lesson in advance.

Gefillte Fisch & Lebensstrudel
Attentive pedestrians surely know them: the Stones of Remembrance for the victims of the Shoa. These so-called “tripping stones” are commemorative plaques set in the paving in front of buildings where Jewish inhabitants lived or worked before the Holocaust. Today, the society behind this hosts its 10-year-anniversary at Gasthaus “Gustl kocht”, in remembrance of the Jewish victims of the Nazis in the 3rddistrict. Helene Maimann will read from her humorous cooking & anecdotes book “Gefillte Fisch & Lebensstrudel” there. And the wonderful Gasthaus Gustl kocht will serve some fitting Jewish-inspired food.

Los caballeros de la mesa redonda
Wild, loud – and not G-rated! A famous group of actors from Cuba does a new interpretation of Christoph Hein’s drama „The Knights of the Round Table” for Musiktheater Days. Based on the political parable on downfall of the GDR, they created a lively travesty comedy. The plot (playing a rather marginal role in this spectacle): the political elite is wasting away, the old king is ready to hand over power, the young generation refuses to take over the system but are without alternatives. An energetic-Caribbean parforce run through young Cuba, crazy and shrill!

B.O.U.M. Wine Fair
Bubbles only, women mostly ;-) The first B O.U.M.-edition last year attracted quite a lot of women; now there’s a remake of the fizz fair in the cosy garden of Glacis pub. Actually, fizz is slightly disrespectful to use in this context because they only present spontaneously fermented wines. Basically, they’re all produced completely naturally. About 40 wineries from all over Europe bring their fancy drops, among them many small wineries like Terraquilia from Italy, Krásná Hora from the Czech Republic, or Gordia from Slovenia.

Shopping and breakfast at Mauer
Now, CitySpotterGirl already strolled around in Mauer last week to nose out the Shop of the Week. Today, you too might have an opportunity to spend a relaxed and chill midmorning in a perhaps less known neighbourhood of the city. 13 stores invite you to have breakfast plus do some shopping, which means you can enjoy small snacks from brownies to puff pastry rolls right there in the different shops. The shops range from opticians and books stores to creative shops. They also offer free try-out classes, like morning gymnastics and hand-lettering. Neat!

The location at Dogenhof in Leopoldstadt is simply grand, and the eccentric-creative crew of the analog concept store is pretty enterprising. So their 4th birthday party will be quite the fun jamboree! They’ve planned a 2-day revelry with grilled chicken, free beer, the coolest music on the turntable (duh!) and some cool paper republic-workshops. Alkaline diet
No matter how much time you spend practicing yoga and meditation, as long as your body is under stress due to acidic foods it will be difficult to reach true health and relaxation. Acting on firsthand experience, yoga & diet specialist Alexandra Muhm offers a workshop where they cook and enjoy a 3-course lunch together, after a theoretical introduction to the topic. On the agenda: to recognize acidosis, learn about food science, and get shopping tips. Well-founded and very comfy since it takes place in the workshop organiser’s private apartment!

Festival of Nations
The more diversity, the better: Blumengärten Hirschstetten are transformed into a wildly mixed universe today, when cultural societies, musicians, and folklore groups from different nations from Armenia to Paraguay perform, dance, sing, do theatre, and play music. And they all live in Vienna! Plus, you can buy artisan craftworks and – obviously! – culinary specialties from all over the world. The activities which you can watch or join in to are multiculturally mixed as well: Kung-Fu, an Eritrean coffee ceremony, calligraphy, or folding lotus flowers.

Gap site concerts
Ingenious idea to make use of the ugly spaces caused by construction gap sites! Media artist Oliver Hangl has organised a series of 4 concerts for the “We Are Vienna”-festival which will take place at such urban blank spaces. The line-up is colourfully mixed, genre-wise, and they play at a different gap site every time. Today, Austrofred declares Litfaßstraße 4 in Simmering his stage and (for all who missed her amazing concert in the Arena) Clara Luzia will be the final act on 20 June at Norwestbahnstraße in the 20thdistrict. Free and at alternative locations in bad weather!

Now this is definitely one of those things you just have to do once as a Viennese lady: visit an improv play at Taschauner! Today, the season of the Ottakringer institution starts with a new play. Quirky and funny as usual – and as cherry on the cake, Drag Queen Lucy McEvil will also play a part. The plot: in order to breathe new life into an old hotel, the queer heiress and new boss gives it a go by hosting a Schlager music event. So you may expect not just some spontaneous joke cracking and situation comedy but also some entertaining trilling. Today is the premiere!

hej 1150
It’s still some time until IKEA actually opens its first branch in the city centre. However, the furniture Swede is already saying “Hello” or rather “Hej” to their future location by hosting workshops, music & join-in activities from walks to talks there in the neighbourhood for three weeks. Each week has a different motto, starting with “sustainability”. So for this topic, you can build a wooden parklet, join a group jogging and discovering the area or do yoga in the park this week. And in the evening, there’s stand-up comedy at Brick with Nuri and Flüsterzweieck!

Vision training for Office-Eye-Syndrom
So, how are you doing now that you’re reaching the end of the newsletter? Can you still see okay or is it flickering, burning and becoming blurred already? Other problems like neck pain or undefined headaches can be signs for an overstraining of the visual system as well. The long, uninterrupted look at the screen, the harmful blue light and the reduced eye blinking can unfortunately lead to “Office-Eye-Syndrome”. Today’s talk by holistic eye trainer and osteopath Eva Holzinger promises relief for those affected: she shows efficient and practical exercises that will make tired eyes shine bright again.

Art postal
A sad Pink Panther on a picknick blanket in Amsterdam or a graffiti in Paris – the artistic post cards by photographer Frank Dehner show fleeting snapshots. Many of them are taken in Vienna, many on the move when he accompanies his partner, actress Caroline Peters, on her travels. The cards can now be bought in the new mini-shop in Margareten, as individuals or as series – and they can be written there as well. There is a small writing desk where you will even find humorous templates by author Ela Angerer, for example to friends at the burn-out clinic or for mom. Original!

New arrival at Donaukanal: a big beach club with restaurant and bar has moved in for the summer across from Motto am Fluss.
