"Heya Girls!"
Mostly men-free, eye-strainingly loud colours and provocative: the photos of fashion photographer Pol Kurucz have been published in Vogue as well as Elle and Glamour. According to self-description “feminism meets the absurdity with which God created the contemporary woman” in his jazzy photos. Since his transition to photography, the autodidact and Brazilian-by choice, formerly a financial manager, prefers to portray women and challenges contemporary norms with his pictures. His eccentric pop iconographies can be placed somewhere between housewife idyll, beauty obsession, black power, fetish, and manga. Now 15 of his currents works can be seen at his first solo exhibition in Austria. The photos have been developed as special Metal Prints – which makes them pop even more. Conclusion: a must-see, but better bring sunglasses to protect your peepers ;-)

What the Milonga is to tango dancers, the rumba is to salseras. And at dance studio Lillis Ballroom, it’s the “Ballatino”. Which is also at the center of today’s dance night: a cheery, uncomplicated Latin music mix awaits a mixed crowd from professional Enriques to hobby Shakiras, where you can shake it to your heart’s content. Gefillte Fisch & Lebensstrudel
Attentive pedestrians surely know them: the Stones of Remembrance for the victims of the Shoa. These so-called “tripping stones” are commemorative plaques set in the paving in front of buildings where Jewish inhabitants lived or worked before the Holocaust. Today, the society behind this hosts its 10-year-anniversary at Gasthaus “Gustl kocht”, in remembrance of the Jewish victims of the Nazis in the 3rddistrict. Helene Maimann will read from her humorous cooking & anecdotes book “Gefillte Fisch & Lebensstrudel” there. And the wonderful Gasthaus Gustl kocht will serve some fitting Jewish-inspired food.

Wild, loud – and not G-rated! A famous group of actors from Cuba does a new interpretation of Christoph Hein’s drama „The Knights of the Round Table” for Musiktheater Days. Based on the political parable on downfall of the GDR, they created a lively travesty comedy. The plot (playing a rather marginal role in this spectacle): the political elite is wasting away, the old king is ready to hand over power, the young generation refuses to take over the system but are without alternatives. An energetic-Caribbean parforce run through young Cuba, crazy and shrill!

B.O.U.M. Wine Fair
Bubbles only, women mostly ;-) The first B O.U.M.-edition last year attracted quite a lot of women; now there’s a remake of the fizz fair in the cosy garden of Glacis pub. Actually, fizz is slightly disrespectful to use in this context because they only present spontaneously fermented wines. Basically, they’re all produced completely naturally. About 40 wineries from all over Europe bring their fancy drops, among them many small wineries like Terraquilia from Italy, Krásná Hora from the Czech Republic, or Gordia from Slovenia.

Many people know the WUK only for its concerts, but today you can get an idea of the artistic production in the old brick building. After all, it houses as many as 34 studios and workshops with much sedulous painting, molding, tailoring, and printing happening there. Today, this labyrinth of self-organised spaces opens its doors, with more than 100 artists welcoming you to watch their art and works. There is also a broad variety of activities going on like concerts, readings, workshops, and join-in performances. And from 22:00 there’s a party in the yard with DJane-set! Free artsy treat around MAK: today you can discover Otto Wagner’s extensive work there. For Art Nouveau World Day they offer special guided tours through the exhibition “Post Otto Wagner”, plus you can also visit the Austrian Postal Savings Bank during a guided tour following the traces of the Art Nouveau master who died 100 years ago. Particularly interesting: an Architecture Walk to Wagner’s lesser-known residential buildings in the 1st, 7th, and 9th district. Another free event is the photo exhibition at the Romanian Culture Institute, where you can see works from other Art Nouveau architects in the Danube region.

Media artist Oliver Hangl has organised a series of 4 concerts for the “We Are Vienna”-festival which will take place at such urban blank spaces. The line-up is colourfully mixed, genre-wise, and they play at a different gap site every time. Today, Austrofred declares Litfaßstraße 4 in Simmering his stage and (for all who missed her amazing concert in the Arena) Clara Luzia will be the final act on 20 June at Norwestbahnstraße in the 20thdistrict. Vision training for Office-Eye-Syndrom
So, how are you doing now that you’re reaching the end of the newsletter? Can you still see okay or is it flickering, burning and becoming blurred already? Other problems like neck pain or undefined headaches can be signs for an overstraining of the visual system as well. The long, uninterrupted look at the screen, the harmful blue light and the reduced eye blinking can unfortunately lead to “Office-Eye-Syndrome”. Today’s talk by holistic eye trainer and osteopath Eva Holzinger promises relief for those affected: she shows efficient and practical exercises that will make tired eyes shine bright again.

The cards can now be bought in the new mini-shop in Margareten, as individuals or as series – and they can be written there as well. New arrival at Donaukanal: a big beach club with restaurant and bar has moved in for the summer across from Motto am Fluss. Not everything’s going according to plan in the kitchen yet but it’s certainly a great place to sit by the water and chill. On the menu are creative burgers and a myriad of different salads (when they actually have them and they don’t happen to be out of salad, that is). At night, you can escape the heat with iced sangrias or domestic wines. Neat: left and right of Blumenwiese, there are comfy beach chairs allowing you to relax and sunbathe without needing to order anything.
