"Heya Girls!"
This week, a cool virus is spreading in Vienna for a chance: It is not less infectious, but a thousand times more fun than influenza. Its medical term is “flea market or bargain fever”. I already feel fleas crawling – no wonder, since this weekend we are chasing from one Viennese nick-nacks landscape to the next. On Saturday Kiky von Rebental and Mara Schatz open their treasure boxes (and their atelier) and together with friends they sell off chic clothes, iconic steam punk jewellery and truly unconventional rarities such as a fully functional Rolleicord camera! A few streets away, nostalgia addicts rummage in the colourful living and fashion jumble sale in the WO and take a break with coffee and cake before hopping joyfully to the 17th district. Here, countless music and book rarities wait for new owners at the 2-day parish flea market. Large choice, good quality! If you still have energy left: On Sunday the shopping fever continues at the cool vintage flea market (photo) in Christian Kahrer’s costume studio.

Women are strong, humorous, brutal, charming and, yes, sometimes also contradictory :-) And that’s a good thing! Today the women’s film days are kicked off! Until March 4, international movie hits and prize-winning independent films made by women are shown throughout Austria. In the leading roles: many great women with bouncebackability behind and in front of the camera! The Filmcasino starts with the box office hit from Venice “As I open my eyes“, in which the Tunisian director Leyla Bouzid makes a vibrant portrait of the 18-year-old Farah who rebels against patriarchy. Superamas: War and Terror

And once again, the European artist collective Superamas dances on the pulse of currant affairs – with a story real life wrote for them: The crew was in Paris around November 13, 2015 and experienced the brutal terrorist attacks and the shock of thousands of people at first hand. These emotions and fragments of the tragic event landed in their new performance, in which the visible weapons policy of WWI meets the invisible one of today’s terror. You can now watch the first extracts of the performance! With fascinating jumps of anger and thunder steps!

Oscar Night at Gartenbaukino

As every year, the cinema Gartenbaukino helps cineastes pass the time until the time-lagged Oscar broadcast in a nice way. To put the audience in the right mood for the live action starting at 2am, this year’s film-award candidates such as “The Hateful Eight“ or “Mad Max: Fury Road“ are shown as of noon. After midnight, the legendary Red Carpet Show starts, from 2:30 on the Oscar Awards are broadcast live from LA and from 3:00 there will be free coffee and breakfast in order to stay awake. Dressed-up guests get champagne for free and free tickets are available from 23:30 at the box office.

Be ready for concentrated mother-daughter-power from the USA in the Vienna Orpheum today: Mum Nancy is a pianist and music pedagogue and has passed on her love for music to her daughter Rachelle from an early age. And she did it successfully, because the daughter became a popular multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter. Her album “Who’s Counting“ was released in 2015 and sounds like jazz, folk and New York. Today, the dynamic duo combines Debussy and Mozart with own-compositions, Rachelle’s prominent voice and virtuous accordion plunking skills. Cool!

There are no more excuses. When the waistband pinches and the T-Shirts are getting tighter and tighter, we just have to overcome our weaker self and take it for a walk. She already wrote feminist cabarets, when most people couldn’t even spell the word. She played cunning pastor’s wives, garden plot holders and the iconic “Night Nurse Kroymann” in the very first (!) TV fem-satire. And, in her own words, she has been stuck in puberty for 50 years (grin): the super intelligent and super funny Maren Kroymann. “In my Sixties” is her latest coup – a concert-cabaret – in which she makes the 60s soundtrack vibrate and shares amusing moral and sex anecdotes. Brilliant voice, great gags, cool band.

Chagall to Malewitsch

The CitySpotterGirl has a soft spot for Russians. Well, not for the nouveau riche luxury faction settling down in the first district, but for Russian writers and artists – from Daniil Charms to Kasimir Malewitsch. The Albertina is now devoting a new exhibition to the Russian avant-garde painters of the early 20th century. With more than 130 iconic masterpieces by Chagall, Kandinsky & Co it covers all styles of Modernism: from primitivism to cubo-futurism. My suggestion: Toss down a shot of vodka and fly through the air with the lady in pink of Chagall’s “The Promenade”.

Yes, they actually do exist: those rare geniuses of photographic art, who have the sense, the luck and a knack for being in the right place at the right time. The Japanese photographer Hiroji Kubota is one of them. Since the 1970s he has been travelling around the world and captured the most important contemporary moments for eternity – even in isolated North Korea! As of now, 100 of his brilliant snapshots are presented in WestLicht: including goose-flesh pictures of the anti-Vietnam war demos of the 1970s or everyday life impressions from post-revolutionary China. Two cool Austro bands are playing their melodic sounds into the Viennese night today! “Birds Of Vienna“ perform their instrumental versions of zeitgeisty urban folk at Sargfabrik. Their music somehow reminds of alpine country pop and definitely causes good mood. The latter is also spread by singer-songwriter and CitySpotterGirl darling Juliane Blinzer and her band fin who present their very first single “tales never told“ at B72. This makes vibrate not only the city railway arches but also music-lovers’ hearts. Well, and how on earth should we now come to a decision?

The grand opening is celebrated on February 25, as of Friday it is open to everyone: master-tailor Magdalena Toth’s atelier store, which makes us happy already when entering! On the one hand, this may be due to the very likeable Viennese who has been designing bride’s and evening gowns since 2009. On the other hand, it may also be due to the countless dream dresses –available in any colour (currently lots of bronze and rosé) and in timelessly beautiful styles - which are sparkling towards the customers through the light-flooded shop. Even if you don’t need a dress right now, you have to go there: Magdalena also offers a huge range of premium fabrics from 5 €/metre!

Jesus, what a great taste! As of now, the CitySpotterGirl has a new favourite desert: Pastel de Nata. Puff pastries filled with vanilla cream, with a slightly brown crust – a Portuguese revelation. Served, besides other Portuguese delicacies, in the stylish Lisboa Lounge. Earlier the restaurant resided on the other end of the district, now everything has changed: the furniture is chicer, the menu more impressive, the crowds larger. Especially in the evenings you should definitely make a reservation if you feel like eating salt cod fritters, Arroz do Mar (the whole sea in a risotto), pork cheeks or tapas. I urgently have to travel to Portugal!
