"Heya Girls!"
Yes, the time of winter roots and shrivel-tubers is finally over and spring bears us tasty young veggies. Which is why this appeal to all green epicureans and organic food enthusiasts comes at just the right time: the wonderful gardening farm GeLa Ochsenherz, organised with community support, still has boxes available and would like to welcome more supporters! It works like this: you buy a share of the harvest, providing the farmer with a stable budget and in return, you get a weekly box full of fresh Demeter-vegetables. Every box contains 10 different kinds of veggies and herbs of a quality that you definitely won’t get at a supermarket – from Peruvian cherries and small orange “Sweet Bite Ophelia”- peppers to meadow-green sorrel. They deliver to 8 collecting locations in Vienna, starting on 29 May. So no shilly-shallying, get the declaration of enrolment here!

Wishing you a crunchy week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

The Whispering Tree
New York, Hudson River, indie music – three reasons to discover some musical novelties at Haus der Musik today! Because the band with the beautiful name “The Whispering Tree” is currently a guest there. Singer/songwriter Eleanor Kleiner and multi-instrumentalist Elie Brangbour have brought some fine, Hudson River Valley-inspired music with them. Their debut “Go Call The Captain” in the year 2010 was a delight, and they have stayed true to their unique style with the new songs. A catchy mix of classic rock and harmonious folk songs, really beautiful! Listen in here.

A drive with Stadtbahn
Otto Wagner’s Stadtbahn is Vienna’s most important urban-planning accomplishment, aside from Ringstraße. The design of the beautiful station buildings, bridges, and viaducts is mainly focused on functionality. Rail travel became an architectonic experience, the buildings leave their mark on the city, and they are all still fully functional – very impressive! Today, you can explore the history and architecture of the Stadtbahn during a two-hour city expedition, together with architectural historian Otto Kapfinger. Note: buy the ticket at Wien Museum in advance!

 FIN
Archive Sale at Local Vienna
Very cool and very local: right on site, in her atelier attached to her store is where Sasa Fabjan produces her fashion under the label name FIN. Pretty avantgarde, feminine, and with extravagant-asymmetrical cuts. Right now, she needs more space for new pieces again, so there’s a hefty sale: until Saturday, a lot of stuff from previous collections and even selected pieces from the current spring collection can be snatched for prices 30 to 70 % cheaper than usual. Including smartly cut dresses, cool shirts, basics like elegant white blouses and also some coats.

Global 6K Walk & Run
Walking or running 6km for clean water: Global 6K Walk & Run for Water is a campaign encouraging people all over the world to symbolically walk 6 kilometres for clean drinking water between 16 and 20 May. 6 km because that’s the average distance people in the poorest countries in the world have to walk to reach the nearest watering place. Quite a long way, like from Stephansplatz to the Hauptbahnhof and back again! There are many different groups participating in Vienna, for instance on the 24 sections of the Rundumadum hiking paths. Sunday Dancing
Is the week just ending or beginning? That’s a matter of opinion! And since it’s a holiday tomorrow, we have been gifted with a second day to sleep in. In any case, Sunday Dancing is an event for everyone who hasn’t had enough of the weekend yet and feel like shaking into the new week! And music- and human wise, all indie-pop enthusiasts, frequent bar guests, early movers and night owls will get their money’s worth ;-) Location of this merry happening: the Franz von Hahn bar in Leopoldstadt, with indie vibes from DJ Hymlisch, start is already at 19:00. Chief of Sugar at Rooftop
Jürgen Vsetecka is demi-chef-pastry cook at Meinl am Graben, known as „Chief of Sugar” – which makes him very attractive to all the sweet teeth and sugar junkies at CitySpotterGirl’s office ;-) The good man will demonstrate his skills today (and next Sunday) at the cosy P7 Rooftop Bar on Petersplatz. Around tea time, they serve sweet mood elevators like Klimt-Gugelhupf with candied violets, pistachio-raspberry-rings, or nougat cake, accompanied by Meinl coffee and cocktails. Remembrance at Baranka Park
For many centuries, the former Hellerwiese in Favoriten – today’s Belgradplatz with the Baranka Park – was campsite and resting spot for different Roma and Sinti families dealing in carpets, textiles, and horses. Until 70 years ago. Because in autumn 1941, all men, women, and children camping there were deported to concentration camps where most of them were killed. In remembrance of this, they play music today from 17:00 under the red chestnut tree – with Harri Stojka (after whose grandmother the park was named), Ernst Holden, and Mosa Sisic & band.

Osmose Spectrale
All colours of the rainbow united in one exhibition project: eleven international artists have created mostly abstract art works on spectral colours for “Osmose Spectrale”. The colours are reflected in their works either in their pure form or subtly modified from paintings to Mixed Media. Particularly exciting: the Austrian artist Victoria Coeln, known for her ingenius light installations, for example at Heldentor (2016) and St. Stephen's Cathedral (2017) among others, will create a chromotope light body for the opening. Whatever that is exactly ;-)

Crazy Matcha tasting
Now, CitySpotterGirl doesn’t quite get the hysteria surrounding matcha. The fine Japanese pulverised green tea has been showing up in an inflationary manner: not only as a (healthy) coffee latte substitute but also as dessert and ice cream. If you still feel like attracting the green tea virus or if you’re already a matcha fan, you should really drop by the nice tearoom “Teenorissimo” today. They’re having a tasting of “Crazy Matcha”: ground green tea with different flavours from strawberry, Hawaii magic to caramel, with milk, as smoothie or ice tea. Hurrah!

International Day of Biological Diversity
An impressive number: we have 75,000 species in Austria, which makes us one of the most biodiverse countries in Europe. Today, the Museum of Natural History has dedicated an afternoon to celebrating this vast biodiversity with interesting lectures, a panel discussion and also a “market of biodiversity” where you can taste regional products. And at the close, the documentary film “Golden Genes” moves between fiction and reality and shows how you can store the genes of all living things in so-called biobanks. Exciting! And the entry is free.

Clara Luzia
Indie-star Cara Luzia does not seem all that fond of giving concerts – although there’s absolutely no reason for it. In any case, her last tour (not counting her appearances with Familie Lässig) was a while ago, but now she’s got a new album out and will be giving another rare concert in Vienna! Thematically, the singer-songwriter not only dedicates a love song to her wife (and drummer) Cathi Priemer (“The Story Of You & Me”), and gives a tribute to her great-grandmother with “I Remember You”, but also confronts her demons with the song “Survival”. Very personal and very powerful. Listen in here.

 Nadja Gusenbauer
Nadja Gusenbauer: Chernobyl
The year 2017 marked the 30thanniversary of nuclear disaster Chernobyl. The Kiev-born photographer Nadja Gusenbauer took this as occasion to take photographs around the nuclear power plant. The picture series subtitled “Disappeared in the Year 1999” highlights what happened there: dozens of communities were evacuated and were deleted from the administrative register a few years later, in 1999. 115 villages and thousands of farms within the exclusion zone don’t exist anymore officially. Gusenbauer’s black and white photographs range from desolation, mysticism and alienation – impressive.

Filmschau Sarah Maldoror
A revolutionary and grande dame of African cinema is visiting Vienna: the now 80-year old Sarah Maldoror belongs to the first and most discussed filmmakers of the African continent and the diaspora. The Filmmuseum dedicates a retrospect to her, and they will also be screening short films and sensitive cinematic portrait works (26 May at Depot). Today, Maldoro will be present for the opening of the screening at mumok where you can also see, among other things, a documentary about the making-of one of her films that was later confiscated by the Algerian government

Melvin & Hamilton
Sounds British but it’s a German shoe label that has just opened its first flagship store in Austria: behind Melvin & Hamilton are the two brothers Karim and Olivier with Lebanese-French roots. Extensive travelling and love for design has inspired their creations adored by shoe connoisseurs. What’s special about the Chelsea boots, ballerinas and high-heeled sandals are the colours and gradients – they are all hand-dyed. Other characteristics of the label are the “Budapest perforation” and the graceful wickerwork from the finest leather. So pretty! More shoe-hot spots here!

12 Karma Food
Brandnew! It started with a small deli in Klosterneuburg, this week, Simone and Adi are already opening their fourth project for healthy, fast and most importantly sustainable organic food. The latest venue is a breakfast & lunch hotspot right opposite to WU, which also comes with a lovely garden. They serve curries, soups and tasty karma bowls – and the menu promptly tells you what effect the food has. The Masala-beef whole grain lasagne provides calcium and iron, the peas-mint vegetable curry lowers your cholesterol level. In conclusion: good vibes & karma!
