Of course, the Long Night of Museums will once again attract thousands of night owls: With just one ticket, 120 Viennese museums (660 throughout Austria!) can be explored until after midnight. For those who prefer to get off the beaten track, there are fun insider tips with great specials for amusing eye- and brain candy! At the Esperanto Museum you can attend crash courses in Klingon, buy “bubbles” at the traditional Viennese sparkling wine producer Kattus for a special price at the farm-gate sale, and fly over virtual landscapes in the Technical Museum with the VR flight simulator Birdly. The flight is controlled by moving the arms, which creates a rather lively “full-body experience”. If you don't like any hustle and bustle at all, the best thing to do is escape to the ship. On the “Street Art River Cruise”, the MS Vindobona sails along the Danube Canal from Schwedenplatz and you can view the graffiti on the canal bank with an expert guide (photo). Still a current topic, unfortunately, because with the war in Ukraine, the topic of fleeing has again painfully moved into the general consciousness in Europe. On today's Long Day of Refugees, you can learn more about it at around 30 free events. At the “living books” in the main library, for example, people who had to flee themselves share their experiences. On Karlsplatz, an oversized paper boat is folded as a sign of solidarity, and in the MuseumsQuartier, Thana Faroq's photo installation can be seen, which is about people whose refugee status has not yet been recognised.

H&M, Calzedonia & co now cuddle with each other in almost every alley. In between, though, there are fortunately still a few loners with heart and soul. Philipp Graf and Martin Frey have been photographing these traditional shops, from pleated workshop to candy shop, since 2009. They have now turned the over 500 pictures into 8 cinematic portraits of unique people and their businesses. Among them are „Berufsbekleidung Schnepf” or „Bonbons Neubaugasse“. The premiere is today – in Austria's oldest cinema, the Breitenseer Lichtspiele!

Biased Maps
AI, internet espionage and data protection leaks – the immense collections of information also contribute to a distorted everyday image. Google Maps, for example, increasingly determines which parts of the city are being perceived and used. For “Biased Maps”, the artist group Laokoon created a Google-based portrait of Vienna in order to play it back to the Viennese. So you can experience the hotspots according to Google on a tour based on Google data obtained about the 9th district. Shocking and fascinating at the same time!

Pots und Blitz
Plates that look like bread buns, salt shakers with colourful little heads and porcelain lamps in the shape of human bodies – that and more will be on offer this weekend at the “Pots und Blitz” ceramic design market in the MuseumsQuartier. Around 50 exhibitors will present their handmade goods: From utilitarian ceramics such as cups and plates to (sometimes wonderfully weird) sculptures and jewellery with ceramic elements, it's all here. Worth seeing! In addition, lovers of this fine material can look forward to a lecture on the traditional Japanese technique of ceramic repair, “Kintsugi”!

Day of Open Temples
There are some Buddhist centres in Vienna that you don't usually hear much about. Today, though, they open their doors and offer an exciting excursion into the Buddhist community: with guided mindfulness meditations and lectures, workshops and introductions to Zen practice you can open up to new things in a fun way or explore familiar ones more closely. The Buddhist centre at Fleischmarkt (a building very worth seeing!) also hosts a smoke-offering ritual to remove obstacles. Eating, drinking, shopping, chatting: Vienna's biggest street food festival is going on for three days – and it's all vegan! With a wealth of information, food and DJ sounds, the Vegan Society Austria provides information about veganism and animal rights work. Above all, you can taste and buy animal-product-free delicacies from kebab to Tibetan dumplings to vegan nougat cream. A toast can be made with an organic Dirndl aperitif. Endometriosis, cervical cancer, vulvodynia: In her new theatre play, Carmen Kirschner uses surreal images to address gynaecological disease patterns and sends us on a journey through the patriarchal history of the female body. In doing so, she draws on personal experiences. And she examines the history of the female body in medicine, how myths and sexisms still affect our treatments today, and how collective traumas might be linked to present-day illnesses. Or to put it simply: why does a speculum examination make you feel so shitty?

Now that's an unusual combination for once! For “Matching Art”, Iris Camaa and Harry Ergott have joined forces – she: a gifted furniture pimp whose passion is to give vintage pieces a precise facelift. He: portrait and nude painter of expressive women. For their joint project, the two artists created a harmonious whole in which the furniture was designed to match the painting or vice versa. Today, the talent from Alabama presents his second album “Strange Time To Be Alive”. In it, he takes the endless absurdity he sees around him and transforms it into Forsaken Blues, contemplative folk, brooding ballads and amorous piano melodies. On top of that, raw, penetrating vocals – the addiction factor is high here!

Thread Fabric Paper – and back again
Birds of a feather flock together, or do opposites attract? With fabric and paper, somehow both are true. The current exhibition at Galerie Druck & Buch shows what this can look like in practice. Four international artists, Carola Willbrand, Robbin Ami Silverberg, Déirdre Kelly and Ingrid Gaier, have explored the materials from all artistic angles. The results include papery-fabric sewn drawings, paper threads and silk fabrics worked into paper, as well as a performance in which fabric is attributed the function of paper. Original!

The name says it all here, because in the new shop of ex-model and designer Evelyn Z. and jewellery fairy Margareta Z. you can truly find everything you need to be a beautiful Viennese lady! The two aesthetes have filled the cute pavilion in Stallburggasse with fashion eye-catchers made of transparent fabrics, the iconic “Mitschkatzen” shirts and handmade glass jewellery. The colourful earrings, bracelets and necklaces look like little fireworks and go fantastically with the fashion. And because the store is so cosily small, you almost feel like you're in a private ladies' salon during nice chats!

Die Cafetiere
And again such beautiful art on the plafond! This time by Frank Maria Knarf – his newly painted “History of Coffee” fits so perfectly in the former, beautiful Naber Cafe that you'd think it had always been here. Vintage style doesn't get any better than this. The cafetiere Peggy Strobel, once restaurant manager at the toque-awarded restaurant Mraz & Sohn, serves perfect coffee, hot chocolate to die for and probably the best but certainly the richest toast in Vienna in the gently renovated 50s venue. With sourdough white bread, Jumi cheese and some sous-vide cooked ham. Just smashing ;-)
