"Heya Girls!"
Yes, my dear readers, the time has come again: From now on, the CitySpotterGirl will switch off her computer, sprawl herself across a hammock and watch the clouds fly by. The traditional summer break begins – and instead of informing you about the usual weekly events, in this edition, I will provide you with the best restaurant and shop tips of the previous months. And I will reveal the most important opening of the summer: The new “Lingenhel” is not just the city’s most unusual, but also its most beautiful oasis of culinary delight. In an extensive and sympathetically restored Biedermeier building, Johannes Lingenhel founded the city’s first cheese dairy, established a top class delicatessen and recently opened a restaurant in which you can do nothing but indulge yourself: from home-made buffalo mozzarella to chicken breast. And you will find all that in a warm, friendly, totally easy-going atmosphere. Therefore definitely worth a try! And now take care, ladies!

Wishing you a beautiful summer
Your CitySpotter Girl

Lingenhel, Landstraßer Hauptstraße 74, 1030 Vienna. Mon-Sat 8:00-22:00. Web

PS: On 1 September, it will go on with the expert’s special newsletter – and from 8 September on as usual!

Lena Hoschek flagship store
Hoschek fans should reprogram their fashion GPS: the store in the 7th district is gone, the star designer moved into a brand new flagship store in the city. Lena Hoschek herself made a great effort with the design of the store at Trattnerhof. With its Sanderson wallpaper, a vintage cash desk and spectacular lamps it exudes a stylish Hollywood flair. The perfect setting for the new, glamorously colorful “Provence” collection. By the way: On August 4, you can buy some of her pieces super low priced on a Pop-Up event at the loft of the 25hours-hotel!

Salonplafond
The room alone is a challenge: The restaurant in the MAK is, as you know, a huge hall with a pompous ceiling. But after the renovation you go into raptures already when entering the restaurant. With its mix of elegant sixties style, amazing Frank fabrics and funny details the “Salonplafond“ looks almost cosy. And the cooking concept of the German TV celebrity chef Tim Mälzer seems to work as well. From breakfast to creatively filled sandwiches to an elaborate dinner – the pretty restaurant is a location for everyone at anytime – with museum view.

Strudls
Actually it is very surprising that no one came up with this idea before: to open a strudel restaurant in the strudel metropolis that is Vienna. But this has nothing to do with the classic apple strudel. At the chic and brightly furnished Strudls the pastries are baked in round single portions and filled with creative things. Every day four sweet and four savory strudels are on the menu, from the so-called “Alpenländer” with alpine cheese to the “Indian greeting” with sweet potatoes, lentils and coconut curry sauces and the (wonderful!) raspberry dream with tonka bean sauce. Great idea, excellent restaurant!

Tschechisches Wohndesign
Okay, there are no fixed opening hours in Radka Prutka’s shop, but, anyway, she is there almost any time. And she is sparkling with enthusiasm when she presents the exclusively Czech furniture and living accessories. A genuine treasure box for lovers of offbeat designs of the 30s to the 60s! Curved wooden room dividers, cantilever chairs upholstered with finest fabrics and (cute!) multi-coloured “nun lamps” with cap-shaped shades. Also the old leathern vaulting box, rescued from a gym, looks great as a table or a seat. Very special and very original!

Miznon
Wow! From now on the saying “Life is vibrant here” has a completely new meaning in Vienna! In the just opened Miznon the group around the Israeli star chef Eyal Shani cooks fabulous street food. And how great! In the open kitchen clanking pans are flying around, the fresh food is served to the guests at the top of the waiters’ voices, plus groovy and loud music and lots of handsome guys behind the counter. They cook pita, stuffed with lamb chops or spicy cauliflower. Or they grill an entire broccoli tree. Tastes awesome! And you just have to come and see. Because this is not a restaurant, this is an adventure!

Guerilla Bakery
It started a few years ago: With their guerrilla baking actions at their place the sisters Sarah, Isabel and Vanessa from Vorarlberg spoiled sweet teeth with cake & co. The three of them soon started to expand their collective baking into restaurants, museums and events. This week the active trio eventually settled down in the fourth district. On the turquoise-tiled cake counter freshly baked goodies such as sinful chestnut tarts or juicy lime gugelhupf, plus a daily warm lunch lure hungry guests. And the idyllic inner court terrace makes it even more lovely to gormandize!

Grandios
All size-zero gazelles can now kick themselves. Because women-understander Georg Preiner just opened a new stylish shop. And there, he really whets women’s appetite for loads of trendy outfits in size 40 and larger. Currently in the assortment: trendy black/white & nude pieces of the Danish curvy labels Carmakoma and Zizzi, sunny Riviera pieces by Maxima (coat for 149,90 €, matching pencil skirt for 69,90 €) and true eye-catching accessories. Practical: instead of a changing booth there’s a comfortable dressing room. Pretty grandiose!

Rollercoaster
Showtime! Fans of fun-restaurants are now being served with a mix of Batcave, disco and tourist restaurant in the Viennese Prater. Guests order via tablet (bring an ID) and eat at rustic 12-person tables and – fasten your seatbelt! – meals and drinks are not served by a waiter, but in true gadget-style, they race directly to your seat on gigantic rollercoaster rails. This is really funny – even for women without the male play instinct gene! In the moving pots: good down-home food from burger to cordon bleu. Everything is fresh and prices are pretty o.k. With spacy light, music and robot spectacles.

Chili-Werkstatt
This is without doubt the hottest shop the CitySpotterGirl has ever entered! The Chili-Werkstatt has been the first address for fans of wild spices since April. A colour coding system helps customers to choose the right pepper; the small shop offers any variety from mild to hellishly hot. The hotteners, such as BBQ sauces, spices, mustard and spicy snacks come from all over the world. Extra tempting: the range of fresh chilli, grown at a special chilli farm in Vienna. By the way: You’d better wash it down with vodka than with water, or just pour oil into the throat.

NOBNOBs The candy manufactory
“Cayenne pepper is coming slowly, ginger is there immediately”, candy expert Stephan Putick explains and advises us to suck slowly. In his new candy manufactory even persons without a sweet tooth will have to admit that tastes such as “strawberry pink pepper” or “curry mango” have little in common with the popular sticky-sweet bonbons. Almost 30 different flavours are currently available, produced directly on site. Chop-chop – it’s quite funny to watch the colourful sweets flying off the knife. In this chic manufactory primarily kept in pastels, tasting is expressively allowed ;-)

Amador’s Wirtshaus
Great excitement! Vienna has a new gourmet temple: One of the most successful chefs in Germany has moved to Vienna (for love). So don’t be fooled by the name: The three-star-celebrity cook Juan Amador serves supreme culinary art in his “Wirtshaus”. Only two 8-course-menus are on the menu – and they are full of genius taste-surprises. Guests dine in the exclusively furnished sparkling wine cellar or in the nice grocery store in the front. Prices are damn high, but in order to get the Iced Gemischter Satz with hazelnut milk and caviar or the Mieral pigeon, I would even walk to Grinzing!

Mary the Fairy
It started as an online shop, then it turned into a shop in Graz and finally into a pop up store in Vienna. However, Mary the Fairy and her favourite items have now taken up residence near Schönbrunn. Yippieh! Because the mainly Scandinavian living accessories, stocked by Sonja Ruiter-Kassin, the living-fairy with good taste, are simply enchanting. The Danish label Aspegren alone is worth a visit: graphically patterned porcelain, marvellous cotton carpets and chic shoppers. How did that go again with the fairy and the three wishes?

Gustl kocht
In times when each new restaurant presents itself with vintage furniture and rough walls, the Gustl surprises with the contrary. His fine and bright restaurant is lovingly decorated, from the counter to the brick-built oven to the lamps and bookshelves. As guests we aren’t really used to so many details anymore! Another surprise is the food: traditional cuisine (with strong Eastern European influences) in outstanding quality. Everything organic, everything tasty, 7 days a week. And the porchetta with fennel and dried tomatoes – excellent!

Auf der Seil
Precious, fine and gorgeous – and everything collected with lifeblood and subtlety. In Katharina Klamerth’s newly opened gift shop simply everything is very special. Delicately patterned boxes, rescued from a remainder of stock in Venice; gorgeous, hand-made “Tudi Billo“ gift-wrapping paper from Nepal, fine “leingrau“ blankets or mouth-blown drinking glasses. And – the CitySpotterGirl’s top favourite: Linen kitchen towels, artfully printed with birds and plants, beautiful like a painting. They alone make the shop worth a visit!

Gubler & Gubler
A doll’s house? A parlour? In any case, one of the nicest new openings of the year! The Swiss enclave run by Kathrin and Markus Gubler looks enchanting – with its white vintage furniture and red-and-white fabrics – and (indeed) seems like an extended living room. They cook the typical dishes of Swiss grannies and mums – traditional, simple, tasty: Bern rösti, Riz Casimir, nut salad, daily changing set lunch and great cakes. The speciality is “wähen”, flat cakes, savoury or sweet. By the way: they do not count calories here! Merci ;-)

Waldemar Tagesbar
Cool, so cool! The hippest restaurant in Hietzing opened last week at Altgasse, which is now definitely the trendiest part of the district. The “Waldemar Tagesbar” (just the name makes you smile) turns out to be an airy, light-flooded loft – furnished in a reserved Scandinavian style with blond wood, cast floor and prominent concrete pillars that serve as huge vases for tree branches. If possible you should arrive before 14:00 because the breakfast plays a big role: inspired by Soho, Tel Aviv, Paris and Hietzing. Apart from that you can enjoy deliciously filled sandwiches and currys at noon. Like I said: cool, so cool!

Klara Fruchtsennerei
At first glance, Vienna’s first “yogurteria” seems like the umpteenth bright, friendly ice cream shop. But instead of ice cream the display case is filled with sweet Alpine dairy products, such as fruit yogurt or curd cheese cream. Everything is made from regional organic milk (even the super-creamy “Greek” yogurt!), without additives, produced in the 3rd district. You can start spooning up right away on cosy benches or get a screw cap cup for take away. They also have semolina pudding and rice pudding – I have rarely had such a good one as the poppy seeds and white chocolate variation. Wonderful creamy soul food!

Habibi & Hawara
The idea behind this restaurant is so beautiful that we have to write about it anyway. Under the supervision of experienced restaurateurs, refugees are running a restaurant together with Viennese people since last week. But reality has even exceeded the idea! The innovatively furnished Habibi turned into a very likeable restaurant with simply delicious food. At lunchtime they serve quick dishes, on the evenings only menus for 2: plates full of Oriental and Austrian (organic) specialities. Fatour, shish, goulash and the best hummus in town. Arabian hospitality meets Viennese snide humour. Brilliant combination!

Comod
Once upon a time, there were three design fairies that met at different fashion and “Fesch” markets. Finally, they decided to open a store together. The first one (Katharina Zöchling / Zoeca-Jewelry) brought delicate, geometrically shaped jewellery, the second one (Rene Pomberger / Roee-Fashion) provided for elegant design pieces from silk bomber jackets to linen pants and the third one (Olivia Löwenpapst / i wanna-Lingerie) created sexy lace underwear. So far, so beautiful! And if we all shop regularly in their new, enchanting empire in Operngasse, the story will definitely have a happy ending ;-)

Riva Favorita
How convenient it is when the favourite pizzeria is following you to your new neighbourhood! After the 9th district the Riva has now opened another restaurant in the fourth: large, airy, stylish, wonderful tiles on the walls. And, of course, with the best pizzas in town. The menu somewhat differs from the original store, but they also serve extraordinarily creative flat dough – garnished with Cime di Rapa and Pancetta. Baked in traditional wood-fired ovens, of course. The ingredients are always freshly delivered from Naples. Such a great pizza close-by makes the CitySpotterGirl simply happy!

The Viennese rent a shelf business is finally coming to life! After Marktwirtschaft & co yet another snazzy, top-located and, most importantly, affordable gift market place for homemade, creative and culinary goods has opened its doors. On the bright and well-organized 100 sqm area, 6,000 products of small- and smallest-scale manufacturers are already gathered in 350 wooden boxes. Except for sex and weapons, there’s everything that makes us happy: Jewellery by iC-crafts, Italo capes by PMS, decorative items, chocolates and wine. Prices are between 1 and 80€. And if you also have something to sell: 5 weeks cost 50€. Thank you!

One sentence would actually be enough at this point: Best corn-fed chicken breast ever! Simply delicious, with emmer wheat and carrot puree. In case some of you are still curious about the long version: At times when Heinz Herkner’s famous restaurant in Neuwaldegg was still existing, the CitySpotterGirl was living in a friendly foreign country. But it couldn’t have been better than the “Herkner” now reopened by the Pichlmaier family (after years of vacancy). The furniture is pretty and funny (heart-shaped chairs!), service is top, the food -from Beuschl to goulash - fantastic. Restaurant 2.0 to perfection.

Jesus, what a great taste! As of now, the CitySpotterGirl has a new favourite desert: Pastel de Nata. Puff pastries filled with vanilla cream, with a slightly brown crust – a Portuguese revelation. Served, besides other Portuguese delicacies, in the stylish Lisboa Lounge. Earlier the restaurant resided on the other end of the district, now everything has changed: the furniture is chicer, the menu more impressive, the crowds larger. Especially in the evenings you should definitely make a reservation if you feel like eating salt cod fritters, Arroz do Mar (the whole sea in a risotto), pork cheeks or tapas.
