"Heya Girls!"
Unlike some BFFs living in friendly foreign countries, I am not a Sisi addict. Yes, I get it: Empress Elisabeth was an influencer, a feminist, her waist was a wasp and she was constantly on the run. Vienna was clearly not her thing. But for me, Sisi is above all a Heimat film, Romy Schneider and tourist kitsch complete with porcelain service. So I'm curious to see how the Volkstheater will manage to convert me. As I write these lines, the premiere of “Ach, Sisi – Neunundneunzig Szenen” is currently running. These are indeed ninety-nine miniatures and snapshots about Elisabeth, the Empress of Austria-Hungary. Director (and comedian) Rainald Grebe traces the myth of the empress – and even had poems written by Sisi set to music. These will now be performed live for the first time. We may be curious.
Wishing you a rose-coloured week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Winter Sale at Combinat
When Santa, Christkind and the witch Befana have all long flown off, Combinat offers presents – in the form of super-cheap designer clothes! Among others, they come from the current collections of Austrian labels like Pitour, Plural or Iamyou. With purist jumpers and pretty shirt dresses (ideal for layering!), you can defy the surprisingly bitter Viennese winter cold. Meaning such a jumper won’t cost around 175€ as usual, but a more reasonable 85€. Tip: Special unique pieces are also available – first come, first serve!
Combinat, quartier21/MQ, Museumsplatz 1, 1070 Vienna. Tue-Sat 12:00 to 19:00. Web

PoLy Mirrors
What is femininity? Lowered gazes, tilted heads, exposed necks, artfully twisted bodies – femininity has been equated with eroticism for centuries. But the fetishisation of the female body is not necessarily feminine per se. The Austrian choreographer Naima Mazic explores this paradox in a jazzy dance performance: In it, two musicians on vibraphone and synthesiser accompany two dancers in their search for femininity. A mirror installation on stage raises the question: Who is actually watching whom? Austrian premiere!

Großmütterchen Hatz tanzt
New year, new luck! In any case, it is lucky that the great band Großmütterchen Hatz exists. The musicians around Franziska Hatz and her accordion play a rousing mix of jazz and world music. As always, the group rings in the new year with a live performance at Sargfabrik, this year with new female reinforcement from bassist Andrea Fränzel. This year's motto is dance! The music, which is based on Jewish klezmer, is sure to make even dancing grouches shake their hips. Loosely based on ballet icon Pina Bausch: “Dance, dance, otherwise you're lost!” Listen in here.

 Elfi Mikesch
Elfi Mikesch Retrospective
She’s a pioneer of Austrian avant-garde film. As a director and cinematographer, Elfi Mikesch regularly tackles topics that mainstream cinema usually leaves out: gender, sexuality, emancipation. Her retrospective starts tonight at Metrokino with “Gendernauts”. The film portrays non-binary artists in San Francisco. It was released in 1999, at a time when the transgender scene still had little media publicity. Mikesch is over 80 years old and is present live today. If you can't make it, don't worry – the Filmarchiv also shows the films digitally, and for free!

Napoleon Flea Market
Since the restaurant Napoleon, a Donaustadt fixture, went bankrupt in 2019, the operators of Café Landtmann have been flirting with the centuries-old tavern. Last summer there was a pop-up, now it's getting serious: the Napoleon is being renovated and will become the latest jewel in the crown of the restaurateur-family Querfeld. What's left of the old Napoleon now goes into loving hands: pretty crockery, cutlery, glasses, original decorations and the odd piece of furniture change owners in the Napoleon's garden. And of course there's also something to feast on ;-) Very nice.

Windobona Flyers Night
It's not hard to imagine that flying is not an inexpensive hobby. If you know that you have to pay about 50€ per minute of flight time in the skydiving wind channel, you will probably shy away from excessive training for this hobby. The Windobona operators know this and are now organising an event where people who have flown before can fly for less in a group. Today, 15 minutes of flying cost 75€ for two people and 37.50€ for four people. At the indoor skydiving, free fall is being simulated – the equivalent of a parachute jump from 4000 metres. And that's pretty eerie.

 Terre Del Sud
One Pot in the Italian style
Italian noodle soup doesn't sound very authentic. Yet minestre di pasta is one of the oldest cooking techniques in southern Italy! In this cooking course, you will learn how to make pulses, fresh vegetables, potatoes and of course pasta into delicious dishes in just one pot. Dario and Manuela Santangelo invite you to their cooking studio and explain the basics of this former (and, if necessary, also today's) leftover cuisine. Then there’s already some cooking! In addition to the resulting dinner, an aperitif, a glass of wine and original Italian caffe are included. Magnifico!

Glitter worlds made of glass beads
A free exhibition for all those who haven't had enough of Christmas yet! The Volkskundemuseum is exhibiting artistic Christmas tree decorations from Gablonz. They are made of handmade glass beads and were the trend of the day at the beginning of the last century. The glittering little things were once sent all over the world! The centre of the glass bead industry was the Bohemian town of Gablonz, today the Czech town of Jablonec. The fascinating tree hanging come from the estate of a collector, and the Volkskundemuseum exhibits it in its passage open to the public.

In the park of the Manner Villa
The Manner estate in Hernals has been lying derelict for some time. The last heir to the waffle empire passed away in 2017, and since then the villa, which is over a hundred years old, has stood empty. Until the end of January, the estate's park is open to visitors! With organic punch, crepes and light installations, the curious can catch a last glimpse of the magnificent building. For after that, it will be a construction site: everything will be converted and extended for the planned luxury flats there. So come to Neuwaldegg while you can still marvel at the original piece!
Mannervilla, Klampfelberggasse 2-4, 1170 Vienna. Until 31 January daily 14:00 to 22:00. Free admission. Web

Toxic Dreams: The Dead Class
How does a person become an assassin? Usually it is young, white men whose photos go around the world after (school) massacres. They hate and do so with all their might – and mostly they despise women. toxic dreams dare to try to look into the soul of the anti-heroes and their manifestos in the anti-musical “The Dead Class”. For many of the perpetrators write a message to the world before the killing spree: some just a few confused lines, others page-long manuscripts. Anders Behring Breivik wrote 1,500 pages. “The Dead Class” was mixed together from these texts by the shooters.

Sight Season Sale
Japanese, Scandinavian and Austrian? Sounds like a wild mix. Luckily, Sight is not a questionable restaurant, but a design shop! It's winter-sale time and the store in Neubaugasse is packed with clothes, jewellery and home accessories from exciting labels. Fluffy jumpers by Copenhagen brand Just Female, twisted candles by Rotterdam artist Lex Pott, jeans made of Japanese raw denim by the in-house label Sightline: all very nice, but usually not exactly cheap. In the sale, many things are now up to 50% cheaper – even cosy, warm winter coats!

Dinner on the Grand Etage
Extremely chic, amazing view – and only accessible to club members: the rooftop restaurant “Grand Etage” is probably one of the most exclusive places in the city – with roof terrace and all the trimmings. From now on, every Tuesday you can also dine there “publicly” in a super stylish ambience. Of course, only the best and not quite cheap – but you don't treat yourself to anything else ;-) Seating is limited, so reservations are a must, mesdames! And then you start the evening with an aperitif and enjoy life.

Meine Rosarote Hochzeit
Henri de Sacy is a confirmed bachelor and a casanova. His favourite aunt leaves him her entire fortune – on one condition: Henri has to enter into matrimony and remain married for a whole year. But because the conservative aunt's will does not explicitly mention a woman, Henri decides without further ado to marry his eccentric best friend Dodo. Sounds like a plan – but then his aristocratic father and Henri's secret love Elsa show up... The French comedy is so absurd that it makes you forget your worries, at least temporarily ;-) Today is the premiere.

 Doris Schneider-Schrei
So, the various lockdowns have finally done someone some good! This charming little art shop only came to the attention of its customers because of all the walking around in the neighbourhood. Inside, there are etageres made of old tea sets, lamps made of pretty gin bottles, jewellery made of graffiti and cheeky prints by illustrator Ilona Schadauer. She uses the Kunstfertig with upcyclist Doris Schneider-Schrei and jewellery artist Cornelia Voglmayr as her studio. The best thing are the prices! At 35€ for a 3-tier étagère, you may safely leave the gold bars at home.

XO Grill
The wandering has come to an end! After various pop-ups all over the city, the guys from XO Grill have now moved into a permanent home in Kettenbrückengasse. The menu is still not big, but it is unusual. Besides “dirty fries”, there is exactly one dish – the Smash Burger. And it is quite something. XO beef is used for the patty, meat from old dairy cows, whose unusually intense flavour fits perfectly. For each burger, the meat is freshly grilled and then packed into a bun of Joseph Brot, along with lots and lots of mustard seeds and Taleggio. Delicious!
