"Heya Girls!"
Next week, you will presumably have to do without sleep and any private appointments! For the Vienna Design Week is in town and shakes things up with exciting exhibitions, workshops, and side-events all over the place! Especially in this year’s focus district Mariahilf, where this year's festival headquarters is located – in as many as three locations: a huge columned hall at the foot of the Rahlstiege (formerly a garage), an apartment building on Esterhazygasse and a building gap, meaning a fallow, on Mollardgasse. There will be lots of culinary programme on the latter – from sprouting mushrooms to Korean street food and a hearty beer garden. From here you can whiz through the city – almost 200 special exhibitions, open studios, pop-ups and tours invite you to aesthetic discovery. Designer Miki Martinek shows jacquard fabrics whose patterns are based on photographic visualisations of sound waves, and two designers with Chinese roots invite you on a completely legal dumpling tour. I'd say: a full programme!

Wishing you a wild week,

Jennifer Tee: Still shifting, Mother Field
You have to look very closely! In her collages, Amsterdam-based artist Jennifer Tee references ceremonial fabrics from the south of Sumatra and has recreated motifs from them – from pressed tulip leaves! Infinitely delicate and at the same time archaically wild, her pictures tell of rites of passage and the path to the afterlife, just like the so-called “tampans” on which they are based. These woven, square fabrics were once exchanged to mark important events. Today the exhibition opens at the Secession, right at the beginning there’s also a performance by Jennifer Tee.

Hemayat’s Summer Party
Here, dreams could come true: Who wants to be read to by Cornelius Obonya in their own living room? Who wants to meet art superstar Ai Weiwei in person? Or be cooked for by Marlene Streeruwitz? For that you have to go to Palais Schönburg tonight! There, at Hemayat’s summer party, “donations of time” from celebrities will be auctioned off – for the benefit of traumatised torture and war survivors who receive psychological help from Hemayat. Those who bid could soon have the music band Franui in their living room – for a concert. You can bid online here.

Plants for everybody
No trend sprawls more luxuriantly and embellishes the interior as elegantly as ficus, yucca, monstera and pilea! The hipper the plant, the more expensive it is, though. The travelling nursery “Pflanzen für alle” provides a remedy. With huge plant sales at mini prices, it provides greenery fans with supplies for the jungle at home – starting today for 3 days for the first time also in Vienna. Plants are available from 2€, 1 € or 15€! And pots to spice things up are also on offer. A visit on the last day pays off – for there are extra discounts at the end! But you do have to register.

Karls Day on Karlsplatz
Friday is definitely the best day to go galivanting in the city. At “Karlstag”, the Karlsplatz art square celebrates itself and its cultural institutions with a great programme. On a seven-hour Karlsplatz mega-tour you can visit all the cultural hot spots from the Karlskirche to the Secession (you can easily join the tour at any time!) and take part in many special tours, such as the guided tour of the construction site at the Wien Museum. And in the evening you can chill out at concerts by the pond, for example with Madame Baheux or Nino aus Wien. Beautiful!

Roman Festival in Vienna
Quo vadis... Where are you going? Why not to the 1st Vienna Roman Festival. Unlike conventional ancient city festivals, today it’s all about the food and games of the ancient Romans. The perfumed cuisine can be enjoyed over a Roman aperitif platter plus dinner accompanied by the typical spiced wine. Archaeologists will provide spicy insights into ancient Roman cuisine. The luxury version of the ancient Roman motto “bread and games” would not be complete without three participatory games. The rules for these come from archaeological finds.

Le Grand Tango
Azúcar! When tango luminary Pablo Veron, considered the best dancer in the world, heats up the stage of the Odeon Theatre to the sound of Astor Piazzolla's specially created version of the Four Seasons, it will be a spectacle! In addition, international dance couples introduce their shows to the multifaceted world of Argentine glitter tango. Once you are really in the throes of tango fever and can hardly keep your feet still, salvation follows: an exuberant milonga forms the conclusion of the exhilarating dance night, with live music until the early hours of the morning.

Felt Stained Glass
Felt Stained Glass – what is that? A new art technique in which coloured surfaces are first felted, then cut up and reassembled with the help of black felt pieces. The result: works of art reminiscent of church windows and colourful eye-catchers. The technique was invented by Dublin-based artist Niki Collier, who is now presenting her craft in Vienna together with 25 international textile creators. More than 100 works are on display until 6 October. If you like it, you can learn the technique yourself in today's workshop and (really cool!) exhibit your finished work of art as well.

Forest & Meadow Wonder Brunch
Yeah, sure, it would be really healthy to spend a Sunday in the fresh air in the woods and meadows. But today there is another way, because the Renaissance Hotel Wien is hosting a brunch with the motto “Off into nature!”. The culinary riches of the forest and meadow will be feasted on lavishly: carpaccio with roasted wild mushrooms, veal fillet in a wild herb coat, parsnip tartelettes with apricot chutney and wild herb salad – the Sunday stroll will creatively circle the expansive buffet today for a change. By the way, as sweet finale there’s wild honey ice cream. Yummy!

Marta Meszaros: A retrospective
She’s called Hungary’s cinematic conscience and is undoubtedly Hungary's most important female director: Marta Meszaros. She made her feature film debut with “The Girl” in 1968. The result: the prelude to an unprecedented wave of Hungarian women directors. Her documentary realism and strong, self-confident images of women were style-defining; the focus of her films is always on “working women” and their struggle against the patriarchal order. The Film Museum dedicates a retrospective to the 90-year-old; today it shows “Just Like Home” from 1978.

Billie Holliday Show
The jazz diva, whose career began in a bar in Harlem in the 1930s, will come to the Drachengasse Theatre from today! At least in spirit: US actress and singer Lynne Ann Williams embodies the jazz legend in a special tribute. Billie Holliday aka Lady Day revolutionised the jazz genre with her way of singing. “Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill” mimes one of Holliday's last performances in 1959, just four months before her death. Williams not only sings the famous songs, but also recalls the tragic life of the icon.

Yvonne Widler: Femicides
Two to three women killed – by men – per month in 2021 in Austria: this is the reason why the Alpine Republic is repeatedly referred to as the “land of femicides”. A topic that simultaneously stuns, infuriates and makes you infinitely sad, and which absolutely demands our attention. Yvonne Widler has made this task an affair of the heart. In her book, she gives back to the women who were killed what was brutally taken from them: a voice that tells their story. The first presentation will take place today in conversation with journalist Corinna Milborn.

mumok: The Animal Within
Already a zoo or still a museum?  The mumok collection contains almost 500 works that have to do with animals – a considerable number that raises the question of what kind of zoo the museum actually is ;-) In any case, for its 60th anniversary, the mumok is using the popular appeal of animals to reflect on social themes such as sex, hunger and affection with the exhibition “The Animal Within”. Who leads whom on a leash? Who clips whose wings? Who scratches whose back? Today you can spend a day thinking about this – all free of charge at the Open Day.

 Awareness & Conciousness
Sign/inside out: Pop-Up & Exhibition
Use of inside and outside – the idea behind the collaboration between Christiane Gruber, designer of the Viennese label A&C, and the visual artist Manuel Gorkiewicz. With her reversible quilted jacket collection, Gruber not only wants to convey protection and warmth, but also to give them a symbolic character by quilting in signs. In keeping with this, Gorkiewicz created objects made of inflated latex gloves covered with paste and tissue paper, balloons or condoms that function as clothes racks. It's worth taking a look (and trying on)!

Scented candles: from addiction to perplexity to nausea, they can trigger many feelings. Here they surprise – and with elegant restraint, just like their maker Andriy Sydor. With his wife Oksana, the Ukrainian already owned a candle manufactory in his home country, which he had to give up due to the war. In his shop – in a cool mix of ancient rooms and industrial style – he now aims to beguile the noses of the Viennese with handmade creations made of Ukrainian beeswax and scents from Provence. Das Goldstück
Whether the vegetables are too crooked, too small or too big doesn't matter to the two friendly owners. They cook with rescued organic veggies saved from being thrown away by the Linz start-up Afreshed or with vegetable rarities from “Dirndln am Feld” – and they cook great. Vegetarian and vegan delicacies are produced daily for lunch, like braised purple haze carrots on vegan labneh or Asian soba noodles. The smart restaurant is tiny, but next door they are working on the “big” Goldstück. Super, because even the cakes here are amazing!
