"Heya Girls!"
Now that's how we like it! For Women's Day, Vienna will be fully under petticoat government for once. With many offers from art to advice. At the Albertina and the Albertina Modern, women have free admission to the current exhibitions on Monday. In addition, all female visitors will receive exhibition posters and postcards – while stocks last. At the Rathaus, meanwhile, women can find out about women's policy – via Zoom, of course – or attend the workshop on cyber violence. In the rest of the city, too, the female-dominated action continues. The Literatur Museum puts Austrian women writers in the limelight and the mumok offers a writing workshop just for women. All the nice events, however, do not hide the fact that equality of men and women is still far from being achieved. Which is why, for me, this week's motto is that of the incomparable Frida Kahlo: “Laughter has made us invincible, not as those who always win, but as those who never give up.”

Wishing you a solidary women’s week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Architecture Festival: Turn On
Deserted streets, abandoned mega-buildings and the retreat into the private sphere: the pandemic poses big questions for architecture, too. The architecture festival wants to provide answers over the next 3 days – completely free of charge and as a live online event! From today, lectures are held on new and innovative aspects of building around the globe: on the design of hybrid urban districts like the Nordbahnhof, Finland's wooden showcase office “Wood City” or impressive art spaces in Ghana. And in Lower Austria, a transparent new building lets you look right into its heart.

Tulü Porcelain
It’s best to make a lot of room in the kitchen cupboards and in the display case right away ;-) At Tulü Porcelain, spring cleaning is on the agenda and a lot of things need to be sorted out: During a warehouse sale, dinnerware sets in many different colours made of high-quality porcelain are now 50 percent off: instead of the usual 100 euros, you pay only 50 euros for a 24-piece service – but only while stocks last! Available in a pastel speckled pattern or with a snail shell pattern in many shades of blue, pink and green. Better not dilly-dally because the discount is only valid in-store.

 Elliott Erwitt
Elliott Erwitt: Paris
Aw, Paris! The flair of this city really is something special. No one knew how to capture the humour, the attitude to life and the charm as well as the legendary photographer Elliott Erwitt. In a show of over fifty lively photographs, photo gallery OstLicht transports “mind travellers” to the metropolis on the Seine. Erwitt repeatedly returned to his city of birth in the 1940s and photographed street cafés, boulevards, jardins and cabarets with the eyes of a flâneur. The images are full of lightness that show the exceptional in the everydayness.

 Vulgaris
The Future of Living
A new exhibition starting today at designforum puts Slovenia in the spotlight. “The Future of Living” shows contemporary design for living, leisure and lifestyle from our neighbouring country – and all produced sustainably and locally! Like the eye-catching cherry wood cabinet wardrobes by “Vulgaris”, inspired by Renaissance cabinets. The manufactory “Kobeiagi Kilims” also relies on fairly paid craftsmanship and creativity: their carpets made of sheep's wool are woven by hand. Fresh design from record players to lamps to shell chairs!

It is literally a way to let go: In archery, concentration is only on the target, everything else is irrelevant for the moment. As an individual outdoor sport, it is also virus-safe and Corona-compliant, and may therefore be practised! Ayurveda – Detox for Spring
Simply munching away the winter blues sounds unhealthy at first, but with Hirsa Navid's cooking course it's actually a delicious detox regime. In the online course for beginners, the Ayurveda expert and Persian-born cook prepares purifying dishes live, all of them vegetarian. The recipes are step-by-step, and Navid also includes tips on Ayurvedic nutrition. The food is oriental: kitchari, a stew of rice and lentils, coconut vegetables and sweet halva, which is similar to Turkish honey. Healthy food that tastes good.

Supersense Flea Market
Attention: For two days, the Dogenhof opens its palace doors for a big Supersense flea market! The eccentric-creative crew of the institution for the analogue is parting with many small and large analogue gems collected over the last seven years – from handmade notebooks to curious papers, from old vinyl and shellac records to instant cameras, photo books and frames. On Friday, you can also treat yourself to a stockfish of organic char (terrific!) or gyros grilled over charcoal from Dogenhof as a take-away. Shoo, shoo!

MAGA Meets Marie
The storming of the Capitol by radical Trump supporters will probably be remembered for a long time. For some, the action seemed like a comic book parody of the storming of the Bastille in 1789. Stephanie Misa, an artist born in the Philippines, also plays with this connection. In her latest installation MAGA Meets Marie, she creates a visually compelling assemblage of banners, hats and chandeliers and sets them in reference to QAnon, Proud Boys and Marie Antoinette. Because of Corona there's no “normal” vernissage, but with pre-registration you can go to the soft opening today.

 Café Diglas
Cafe Diglas in a glass
For lazy Sundays and too-late shoppers: Cafe Diglas in the Schottenstift offers culinary salvation at the touch of a button and in the form of a “snack vending machine” – but instead of Snickers bars, it’s stocked with freshly cooked cuisine classics every day. Cream soups (from 4.50€), Tafelspitz or veal goulash (10€) in jars tumble out of the machine around the clock. Meatless dishes include lentil-vegetable ragout or sweet potato-paprika goulash – and just like in a restaurant, the dishes in the vending machine constantly change. Pay by card, heat it up at home and enjoy your meal!

Raise your glasses! Today is International Women's Day and thus a toast is in order. Just in time, Austria's first wine shop exclusively for women's wine opens its doors: from today “Vinofilia” presents exclusively female vintners from Austria and Switzerland – that's where owner Madlaina Sladecek-Dosch comes from, who has professionally tasted her way through vineyards and cellar alleys. Her assortment includes wines by pioneers such as Heidi Schröck and Silvia Heinrich, but there is also room for young winemakers. By the way: the “wine of the month” can be tasted for free ;-)

Emily Stewart
Drifting away in your thoughts to dreamlike music: with her debut “The Anatomy of Melancholy”, violinist and singer-songwriter Emily Stewart has composed the best soundtrack for it. The pieces are a musical rendering of the book of the same name by Robert Burton. In the free video stream from Radiokulturhaus, she plays the album today together with a string trio: Stewart has combined classical music, folk songs and her own compositions with songs and poems from the book, which, while listening, transports you into a world full of longing and memories. Perfect for some daydreaming!

Silent Scream
Expedition into the realm of flowers: in a display and in the atrium of the Gerngross department stores', the exhibition “Silent Scream” shows an extravagant world of plants, captured by the internationally renowned photographer Richard Fischer. Through depth of field and light painting, he teases out luminous colours and structures, showing all facets of blossoming: the germinating, the perfectly formed and the dying are enchanting. Fischer also draws attention to climate change and the extinction of species, though – a quiet but clear cry of nature, visible in floral sculptures.

Already online are recipes for eclairs, pretzels and instructions on how to make the dough for an original Neapolitan pizza nice and fluffy. SchönDing
Wonderfully whimsical! The Volkskundemuseum has revamped its museum shop, combining small, lovely things with the trove of a former hardware store (yes, really): Between mini-silhouettes in matchboxes and wooden printing stamps, one discovers heavy iron keys for a key ring and quirky odds and ends. What's special is the wrapping paper, for which textile patterns by Emilie Flöge were combined. SchönDing is not the biggest shop, but it is finely and openly designed, so that there is also room for art catalogues, books and a funny “Thing of the Month”.

Joëlle
Fancy a French lunch break? Frenchwoman Joëlle Raverdy actually runs a catering company and cooks for events with creative (family) recipes from her home country. Because that is not possible at the moment, she has settled down in the third district. She’s opened a small, charming (and beautifully tiled) bistro and rescues hungry people with warm quiches in many variations and wonderful tartelettes. If that's not enough for you, you can have some delicacies in a jar – poulet basquaise or boeuf bourguignon only need to be heated up briefly at home. How practical!
