"Heya Girls!"
Well, it’s pretty obvious that this is going to be one of my favourite exhibitions of 2019. “Pattern and Decoration” is the name of a US-American art trend from 1975 to 1985 that was dedicated exclusively to patterns. The artists committed to feminism like Miriam Schapiro, Joyce Kozloff, Valerie Jaudon or Robert Kushner had an objective: they wanted to celebrate as loudly as possible that which was conventionally considered “inferior” – the art of women, artisan craftwork or folk art. Aimed to bring back colour, formal diversity and emotion to the modern, very puristic art at the time. And they managed to do that with Native American patterns just as well as with the style of Art Deco, with Oriental-style mosaics, monumental textile collages, paintings, decorative things – and often folk art techniques too. You can check out the result from Saturday at the mumok: Ornament as Promise. Brilliant!
Wishing you a wildly patterned week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

 The Little Black Cat
Stock Sale at The Little Black Cat
Shopping in fashion-devotee Vicky Scheibelhofer’s boutique is great fun! Not only because it’s easy on your wallet too – with cute pieces by Danish label ICHI or the Parisian label See U Soon, lots of stuff that is suitable for everyday life. There’s a reason why CitySpotterGirl is raving to you about it, of course: the store will move to Zollergasse at the beginning of March and everything has to be cleared out of the old location until then, individual items and many things from previous seasons are up to 60 percent off. And in the flea market corner, the bargains shout “Take me!” from 5€ already. Will do ;-)
The Little Black Cat, Breite Gasse 9, 1070 Vienna. Until 27 February Tue-Fri 11:00 to 19:00, Sat 11:00 to 17:00. Web

Millionaires’ Hobby
Photographic flashback to the fin de siècle: back then, aristocrats and wealthy members of the upper class indulged in the “sculpting of light” as a pastime. The setting for this was provided by the Vienna Camera Club, whose members were not only interested in the fashionable and expensive technique, but also liked to travel to picturesque regions and exotic countries. For some of the amateur photographers, the ambition to pursue photography as an art soon gained centre stage. From today, a spectacular show now showcases fascinating photographs of the Vienna Camera Club – in colour and black-and-white.
Photoinstitut Bonartes, Seilerstätte 22, 1010 Vienna. Vernissage 21 February 19:00. Free entry. Exhibition until 10 May. Web

Nicole Siller: Finde Deine Lust
Vital sexuality is so much more than just “the one thing”! At best, it’s a healthy and beneficial element of life, and it’s always to be seen in association with our body awareness and self-awareness. Sex coach Nicole Siller has written a how-to book about female sexuality based on her many years of experience and intends to motivate women in a playful way to shape their experiences of lust more freely. Not only the woman herself will benefit from it but the partner as well. For only they who really feel themselves can be truly close to others.

Cocoon Sportswear
The jogging junkies and fitness queens among you probably know Cocoon: The Styrian company produces high-quality sportswear which is also popular among extreme athletes. By the way, the handsome sports articles are made in Europe and not somewhere in the Far East, like many hip brands. The store in Vienna has now moved to a new location offering more space, today is the opening celebration there. With a discount of 10-15% on the entire selection, plus music and drinks! And you can also meet, greet and admire four times Ironman winner Eva Wutti there today ;-)

Loud Women
Exciting concert performance! Today at MuTh, they bring music and texts acted, performed, whispered and shouted exclusively by women. To make female composers the focus of the public is of great interest to the all-female “Trip Frühstück” around Viennese pianist-of-passion Clara Frühstück. For today’s “Frauenabend”, another performance artist will join her: Veza Maria Fernandez Ramos was inspired to text and dance by female composers like Clara Schumann and Olga Neuwirth. In any case it’s going to be loud – even when it’s really quiet.

Familie Lässig
„Familie Lässig’s” yearly New Year’s Concert has become iconic by now. For the first time, the group around Clara Luzia, Manuel Rubey and Gunkl has released an album this year called “Im Herzen des Kommerz” and is now touring around with it. Today, the merry family is in Vienna once more, where they will be playing their original interpretations of cover versions from hits to pop that are always introduced in a funny way, plus some of their own songs at Orpheum. In-between, bright spark Gunkl will be “gunkling” words that the audience members threw into a box, great! Listen in here.

Today, it’s off to audio-visual trips to “India – from the desert to the Himalaya” or “Through Wild Norway”. Also captivating: Marlies Czerny’s lecture, who was the first Austrian woman to ascend all 82 four-thousanders in the Alpes. “Around the world in 80 days without money” or with Sonja Endlweber through Canada and Alaska on horseback.  Sigmund Freud Privatstiftung
In Sigmund Freud’s footsteps
Even though Sigmund Freud spent almost 80 years of his life here, he never really warmed up to Vienna. Today’s tour with Claudia Muchitsch, employee of the Freud Museum, leads to all the places that impacted the private and professional life of the psychoanalyst. By the way, he moved to Berggasse 19 in the year 1891, which was going to be the basis for all his everyday practices that were part of his strict daily routine for 50 years: walks, coffeehouse visits, purchases at antique shops or trips to Vienna’s suburbs. A fascinating search for traces!

Haley Reardon
A truly delightful, young singer-songwriter for you to check out! US-American Haley Reardon introduces her brilliant new album “Where I Know You” today at Haus der Musik. With a memorable voice and gently plucked guitar, the musician, born 1996 in Massachusetts, sings openly about her own way and the people who have influenced her life’s journey. And she does so with such subtle depth and so full of wisdom and poetry that you are reminded of Tracy Chapman rather than expecting such a young pop singer. Listen in here.

Livia Klingl “Biedermeiern”
Finally, a lady who calls a spade a spade! Political journalist Livia Klingl has been commenting on Austrian politics on Facebook since the electoral victory of Turquoise and Blue 2017 in a critical, satirical, human and, in the best sense, political way, not sparing anyone from Kurz to Kickl. Her new book “Biedermeiern” is a collection of her sharp-witted commentaries, rants and smart analyses, with added caricatures. Today she presents her book during a reading at Thalia!

Weinzettl & Rudle “Zum x-ten Mal”
Be it loading the trunk of the car, searching for the keys, watching football, going on holiday together or doing chores in the house – Monica Weinzettl and Gerold Rudle, too, find the taxing couple’s life a tough nut to crack. Their advantage: due to their profession, they can laugh about it and have enough material for their new and 10thcabaret programme. For the relationship hurdles never run out and the topics aren’t any newer. A missing X-chromosome turns HIM into a champion in front of the X-box, while SHE turns into a knock-kneed shrew when the XS shirt no longer fits.

How is it that knitting wear is in the company of ball gowns here? Simple: the young Hetzendorf graduate Elisa Malec just loves both – and thus she designs elegant dresses and simple cashmere things with passion. In her first small store she presents gorgeous evening gowns, many of them elaborately embroidered with blossoms or sequins as well as breathtaking wedding dresses. She also offers dreamy custom-made creations. Wilde Ehe
This is what’s been missing in Währing: a pleasant venue where you can casually meet at night for a drink and a bite to eat. It’s a good thing then that the brothers Benjamin and Manuel have recognised this shortcoming and have joined together in “Wilder Ehe” (living together unmarried) to remedy it. Successfully: the rustic-likable restaurant is doing well, the few dishes on the weekly-alternating menu are good. This week, for instance, it’s pea soup, cannelloni and as snack options fried Emmentaler or bulgur balls. Afterwards, you got quaint schnapps from “dates” to “cashew” tempting you. No risk, no reward ;-)
