"Heya Girls!"
While she was only 1.47 metres, she seemed to have more energy than a whole bunch of men put together. She was born in 1870 into a Jewish family in Krakow where she grew up in modest circumstances. At 16, she moved to Vienna on her own, which was basically unthinkable around that time. And she became a pioneer in female entrepreneurship: Helene Rubinstein, “founder of beauty” created a global empire without anyone else’s help! Eventually, her cosmetics enterprise, still a new field at that time, had 100 branches and employed 30,000 people. She lived in Paris, London and New York and spent enormous sums on art, fashion and extravagant residencies. It was in Vienna where she would later make a sensational discovery: the world’s first waterproof mascara! Rubinstein bought the “La bella Nussy” patent, marketing it worldwide. From this week, the Jewish Museum will show a small, fascinating exhibition on Rubinstein (photo) who, as migrant, conquered continents, broke away from conventions and fought for the empowerment of women. Well worth seeing!

Wishing you an elegant week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Seestadt-Saga: Season 1
Now we get Seestadt-fun instead of Kaisermühlen-Blues! The Schauspielhaus has developed a theatrical social-media-series about Vienna, which can be consumed not just online, but also in the real world. The saga’s subject and setting: the new Seestadt and all the little and big joys and hardships of the 20,000 inhabitants, that will live there one day. The series starts off (online) today at noon! And on 23 October from 20:00, you’ll be able to see the protagonists offline for the first time at Seestadt. And even become part of the story! Many real time-acts and parties are said to follow. Viennale 2017
Alright, now it’s time to pack some power-snacks, drink a couple litres espresso and pay a prophylactic visit to the loo. For the Viennale is here! With 300 super-films and cool exhibitions, parties, and concerts in 14 days. Including incredibly amazing feature films, documentaries, and crossovers, which cineastes will only be able to see here because they never make it to the regular cinemas. Today starts off with John Carroll Lynch’s “lonely cowboy”-directing debut “Lucky”. On 24 October, Oscar-star Christoph Waltz will personally give himself the honour with “Carnage”. Autograph-alert!

Apples and oranges, as if! At zweigstelle, you can also buy smashing chairs and fancy porcelain apart from (the usual) beautifully arranged flowers and greens for three days. Together with Albin Denk and Thonet and their long-standing tradition, they change perspective (and address) for three short exhibitions. And really go to town interior-wise! At La Table Bleu at Porzellangasse, tables will groan under the weight of all the lead crystal, Meissen porcelain & Co. Timelessly elegant Thonet furniture pieces are also popping up, inviting you to browse and shop. Only until 23 October!

Max Giesinger: Roulette Tou
Handsome boy! Cool music! Millions of fans! Top-selling new album! Still, somehow the singer-songwriter and ex-The Voice-star Max Giesinger has escaped CitySpotterGirl’s music-radar. But today, there’s no way out ;-) The likable romantic will rock Vienna WUK with his band. His hits like “80 Millionen“ and “Wenn sie tanzt“ (when she dances) from his current hit album “Der Junge, der rennt“ (the boy who runs) will melt Vienna-girls’ hearts (and weaken their knees). So, on that note it’s time to get dolled up, smile and be off to the dance floor!

Speed Oiling
Ladies, forget about the men of creation for a moment. Today, a date with natural essences will take care of your spiritual well-being! Instead of flirting, there will be smelling: several stations will give you the opportunity of diving into the scent of different aroma-oils for 10 to 15 minutes, from lavender to orange, all while getting practical information on effects and usage. Every “oil-date” is dedicated to a certain theme like beauty, anti-aging or stress-reduction. Afterwards there’s sandwiches, Prosecco and trying out products. 5 years heimweh
Even though the weather goddess is still gifting us with her warm rays of sunshine – the time of cuddly blankets will soon be upon us! How lucky that the wonderful heimweh-store celebrates its 5th birthday today. For the party, they serve some hearty cheese and fine wine, and thusly refreshed, you can then stock up on fluffy plaids and cushions from the Vorarlberger manufactory; their new trend collection has just arrived. Plus, there’s stylish vases, nice tableware, and lovely notepads. As well as CitySpotterGirl’s books! And for the sweetaholics: an ice-cream shop just moved in next door.

 Gerald Benesch
Gerald Benesch: Duck and Cover!
Gee, those were the days when young CitySpotterGirl was hiding out in her room armed with raspberry lemonade and Donald Duck comics. Now there’s an exhibition dedicated to her former hero (plus family) with bright and colourful pictures and collages by Austrian graphic designer Gerald Benesch who’s apparently also crazy about the iconic duck. Although this is not just about nostalgia, but also about analysing contemporary issues. After all, The Donald has always been a sly old dog when it comes to politics, propaganda, and Zeitgeist. Today is the last day!

Day of Austrian Sparkling Wine
It bubbles, it sparkles, it foams in all of Austria! The domestic sparkling wine producers open their cellar doors, allow insights into the production of the sparkling drink and reveal one or two winemaker-secrets. And of course there will be the occasional tasting ;-) For instance at the traditional Viennese sparkling wine cellar Kattus in the 19th district, where today’s agenda includes sparkling guided tours, wine tasting, and farmgate-price specials. If you can’t wait to touch glasses: Schlumberger and Szigeti pop the corks already on 21 October (champagne breakfast for 20 €). Cheers and enjoy!

“Die Feuerprobe“ with Isabel Karajan
Tonight, it gets emotional! Because the beautifully-sad poems of Christine Lavant meet the melancholic cello sonata sounds of Dmitri Shostakovich. The lyric-roundel will be recited by no other than Karajan-daughter Isabel. And if you know the actress from one of her Salzburg Festival-performances or from Soko Wien and Tatort, you know that she can cry out loud, artistically speaking. The first cello soloist from the Vienna Philharmonics, Franz Bartolomey, rocks the cello; the piano is played by finger-acrobat and Mozart-contest-winner 2016, Saskia Giorgini. This is gonna be good.

Bussi baba
There are many ways in Vienna to say goodbye and to bid somebody – no matter who or what, men, women, jobs, the Weltschmerz – good riddance. Tonight, Volkstheater-cuties Nils Rovira-Munoz and Christoph Rothenbuchner loudly and quietly practise this skill of saying servus, schleich di (get lost) & bussi baba. Namely in the course of the touching-dancing-theatrical night that proves that goodbyes can be beautiful, funny, sad, and liberating at the same time. So, if you might have some issues related to this topic, stagger into their direction heart-drunkenly. Long live the new beginning!

Pop-up hand bag label Lillicon
What would a woman be without her handbag?? Correct: a) completely naked, b) less glamorous and c) lost. Dance of the Leaves
The colourful lightness of autumn, expressed in dance and captured on textile: today, three creative ladies at the amani gallery invite you to a small but fine art showing. Textile-artist Marianne Reich collects leaves during her walks, puts them on fabrics and, with the help of hot steam, she manages to magically capture their colours and shapes on these fabrics. And today, danseuse Claudia Brandstetter will perform a light-footed leaf-dance in a garment made with this very technique; apart from Marianna Reich’s textile art, you can also admire some of her beautiful abstract works.

Healthy nutrient cuisine
Are you supposed to eat carbohydrates now or not? Is fat really that super-evil and is protein actually helping you lose weight? Tonight, diet experts Alina Leitinger and Daniela Leyrer shed some light into the jungle of health-confusion by leading a workshop on all things low carb, protein bombs and munching fat. A short lecture on main nutrients serves as amuse-gueule, afterwards it’s on to the joint cooking where nourishing things will be fabricated. From cauliflower pizza to cheese cake. Today’s focus is “protein”, followed by “fat” on 27 November.

Robert Frank
When he presses the shutter-release button, there’s no mercy. In 1955/56, the exceptional photographer and documentary filmmaker took a road trip through the USA to capture the American Way of Life. The result was the genius, socio-critical black and white photo series “The Americans”, which is still considered one of the most important contemporary street-art works. Starting now, these (and many more of his) pictures are on display at Albertina. It’s just a pity that Frank is over 90 years old by now. Who could better capture Donald Trump and the current American craziness!

Nesterval's Dirty Faust
”My fair young lady, may I make so free...?” asks the Drag Artist and (amateur) acting collective Nesterval as of now in an amusing and headstrong way. The new dance performance adventure mixes classic Faust-Mephisto-Gretchen lines inappropriately with Dirty Dancing songs. And since that’s not (strange) enough, they’ve added a double-murder to the plot. You should think carefully about sitting in the front row because the audience is joining in, intervenes and decides about happy/sad ending. It’s just one of the cool temporary brut theatres as it’s being refurbished.

Brasserie de la Marie
The new Café-Restaurant at Amerlingstraße with its French flair seems like it’s right out of the film “Amélie”. That’s how cozy-kitschy it is with its colourful furniture and opulent flower bouquets. Only in this case, Amélie is called Carmen, was born in Romania and her understanding of savoir-vivre is a bit more international than that: apart from Ratatouille, lavender-cinnamon chicken and tarte tatin, she also makes burritos and burgers. To keep boredom at bay, as she says. The cooking is just like mum’s! And there’s a different menu every day too.
