"Heya Girls!"
For me, the best thing about summer in the city are the blissful evenings. One of the prettiest places to spend one of those (or more!) in a particularly recreational way is and remains, even after many years, the open air cinema at Augarten “Kino wie noch nie” (cinema like never before). Best combined with a visit to the incredibly great “Grünstern Gartenküche”where you can treat yourself to some fine food before and after the film amid a magical, urban jungle. The menu offers only organic and regional stuff and the creatively put together pallet-pavilion is as legendary as the open fireplace. Afterwards, sated and satisfied, you wander over to the open-air cinema, where they show films every day from 28 June (organised by Filmarchiv and Viennale). From “Make Love Not War”-hits like “Hair” to the red-hot Oscar flick “The Shape of Water”. Good to know in case of bad weather or personal scheduling difficulties: all films are shown at the Metro-Kino, too, on the next day!
Wishing you a chill week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Projekt Garderobe & Walk with me
A very nice clothing swap and neighbourhood tour-combi! The “Projekt Garderobe” encourages you to exchange cleared-out clothes for new ones today – and before that, there’s a joint stroll through the 2nd and 20th district. Everything's flawlessly organised: at first, everyone hands in up to 3 brought-along articles of clothing, then it’s off to the discovery tour through Leopoldstadt and the bordering Brigittenau. The destination is Nordbahnhalle, where there’s food (provided by Wiener Tafel) and everyone can pick as many items of clothing as they brought. Free participation!

Habibi & Hawara: 2 Years leiwand!
A cheer for the Habibis and the Hawara! The model-integration project celebrates its two-year-anniversary today with a street festival in and around the restaurant run together by refugees and Viennese. With the best multiculti food, cool beats and the good feeling of donating money for the apprenticeship training. Doing good and celebrating can also be done on MaHü today: they are collecting donations for starving children in South Sudan there with concerts and readings by around 30 artists from Michael Köhlmeier to Maria Bill for 12 hours.

The Canaletto View
“View of Vienna from the Belvedere”: the picture by Bernardo Bellotto (called Canaletto) in 1759, painted by order of Maria Theresia, is probably the most iconic view of the city. And it’s been the same for 250 years, in regard to the planned high-rise building on Heumarkt, however, maybe not for much longer. A new exhibition at the Belvedere shows city paintings from different historical eras and artists like Kiki Kogelnik or Gerhart Frankl. Because the way a city is depicted represents its political and architectonic development. Fascinating insights and views!

Fete Imperiale
There’s just something about a summer ball! And the yearly Fete Imperiale of former Opernball-boss Elisabeth Gürtler is classy but despite its elegance, it is supposed to be less stiff than Viennese balls usually are. Incidentally, the event was initiated to support the Riding School financially. And since the Lippizaner horses are on summer holiday in the countryside, the ball takes place at the Spanish Riding School. Just as in imperial times, carriages will arrive on the Michaelerplatz and the riding area, where normally only the stallions dance, is turned into a dance floor. Nice!

Theatre seat-flea market at Votivkino
A big hit for the home cinema: The soft blue-grey chairs of the Big Hall at Votiv are sent to their well-deserved retirement and are looking for good homes! The cult furnishings can be picked up at the cinema today in exchange for a voluntary donation. Better reserve your desired chairs in advance via mail and please note that those things don’t stand by themselves – they have to be screwed into the floor, just like at the theatre. Unusual bargains from doors to windows are also offered by the old-established Viennese company Hrachowina during a flea market at their storage in Floridsdorf.

Endlos Fesch Pop Up & Party
Borrowing rather than buying! Vienna’s first “Fashion Library”, where the hottest outfits of the season are not bought but borrowed for a month, is celebrating its 1st anniversary. For that occasion, they open their endlessly pretty wardrobe to host a dress party during a pop up. Their assortment includes 450 pieces consisting of local designer fashion like Tutu Vienna or IAMYOU, and brand fashion from Escada to Missoni. Wallet-indulgent (from 15 € you’re in!), sustainable and super practical! And you can keep on your new outfit and christen it at the subsequent party night ;-)

Kunstverdacht
Today’s vernissage of the private Art School Vienna offers as many as two reasons to celebrate: not just that everyone from the new class has successfully graduated but also that the three-year open art education program could be made available at all after some heavy turmoil in 2015. Because there were some pretty big complications in the beginning. But enough about that – the art should be in focus here, after all ;-) The (very diverse) works of the nine graduands are being presented from today – from oil paintings and comics on textile panels to animated films.

Feel Good Festival
Yes, exercising usually makes you feel much better. To increase this feel-good effect, ladies should put on sportswear and hike up to Naturarena at Hohe Warte today. Because there you can try out different forms of physical training: the workshops, the stages and the stalls all revolve around the newest Yoga trends (for example with goats!), high-impact fitness-workouts, boot camp challenges and mental strenght. And since exercise makes you hungry, they have brought in a fleet of (health) food trucks from Vegi Su to simply raw bakery that join the event.

Buschenschank in Residence
Now, you’d like to follow the wonderful Viennese vintner Jutta Ambrositsch-Kalchbrenner around anywhere. During the last years, she played at a deserted traditional Heurigen, quasi in the Heurigen-heartland Grinzing. Now it’s the next location’s turn: namely the Heurigen of family Rauscher, also in Grinzing, which had existed since 1954 and was closed in 2014. They’re open this weekend and the next, with all ingredients needed for real Viennese wine bliss, like snug and comfy seating areas, regional culinary treats and a few of the finest wines.

Caro Emerald
The Dutch native started her career from the substitutes’ bench. The Canadian singer/songwriter Vince Degiorgio wanted to record a song in Amsterdam, the vocalist cancelled, Miss Emerald filled in – and “Back It Up” turned into an instant-hit in Holland. Exuberance and melancholy are distributed evenly in Caro Emerald’s trademark-sound, the song lyrics eloquently evolve around erotic and psychological pitfalls of male-female-relationships. Her world seems to brim over with cunning vamps and virile playboys ;-) Have a little foretaste here.

Summer Party at the museum
A jamboree in the prettiest garden of Josefstadt! Under the heart-warming slogan “Love in Times like These” they celebrate summer, life, and love today in the idyllic courtyard of the museum. The location between the baroque walls is very romantic already, and today those corners of the museum that are usually not publicly accessible encourage secret hand-holding and smooching, as well ;-) Apart from that, they also have other nice specials, from love letter-calligraphy and a photo-box to a disco bed or Silent Dating for lonely lionesses. Plus: music and barbecue!

Who knew that “Happy Birthday” was penned by two women, namely Mildred and Patty Hill? And for “Imagine” we don’t just have John Lennon to thank but also Yoko Ono! A new exhibition about female composers finally puts music-making women into the limelight. The interactive display was conceptualised by a (female) set designer and a musicologist; there are nine rooms where you can go on a musical journey through time from Hildegard of Bingen to Madonna, accompanied by sound installations, listening stations and films. Mental training for feel-good weight
Much more effective than any diet! Instead of chastising yourself, it’s usually more productive to work on your thoughts and beliefs about weight. Mental coach Claudia Hernandez, a former “chubby pastry chef’s kid” herself, helps people reach their ideal weight with mental techniques. Her 1st course starts today, there are 10 sessions where you work on beliefs and childhood issues. Imaginary journeys to visualise inner ideals are also part of the journey to the ideal weight. Bottom line: you should be able to eat everything, but without stressing. Yes, please!

Mongolian Film Day
Still no holiday but feeling like beaming yourself far-away? Then off to Mongolia – or rather to Weltmuseum, where the Mongolian embassy is hosting a free film night today. To be seen are feature films and short films of contemporary Mongolian cinema: films that you would usually not get to see about a culture that is foreign to most of us. Like for the boy from “The Man with Blue Dots”, for example, who leaves his Mongolian village for the first time to go to France. Attention: since the Weltmuseum is closed on Wednesdays, you have to use the side entrance on the left side!

Melody Gardot
What an impressive woman! As a young girl, she was hit by a truck, spent one and a half years in intensive care and fought her way back to life. Today she’s 32 years old and although she’s suffered from light sensitivity and migraines and walks with a cane since then, she’s nevertheless an outstanding vocal-jazz musician. The New Jersey native singer draws you in with her delicate melting voice and fragile ballads. Her soulful songs sound like they’re evergreens and lure you to realms where time seems to have come to a standstill. Support at today’s concert: Louie Austen.

Whenever there is the possibility to party at Donau Marina in summer, you should jump at the chance! The location at the river is simply awesome: While you’re cutting a fine figure slurping your drink, big ships are drifting by behind, there’s a pleasant maritime draught and feather-light summer feelings are spreading. Yup! Today, a 50’s Beach Party is celebrated there, apart from retro-turntables and live Rock’n’Roll, there is also a fashion show going on with cute 50s dresses by Karin Van Vliet. Österreichische Werkstätten
Backhausen, Augarten and Thonet – companies with great tradition, high-quality manufactories and Jugenstil-inspired products have always been sold at the store of Österreichische Werkstätten. But now they’re also beautifully presented: the three-story- warehouse has just been redecorated by architect Kurt Mühlbauer and redesigned in Art Nouveau-style. The selection is extensive and exquisite, ranging from deco-pieces to fabrics, china, glass- and silverware and furniture. Also represented are young creatives like glass-star Robert Comploj or the Gmunden cashmere-label Caleo. Very chic!

Off to the South Pacific! Two Belgian brothers come to Vienna and open a Hawaii-bar in Tiki style. What may sound a little strange at first quickly turns out to be one of the friendliest bars of the city. The warm owners, who you’ll immediately recognise in their wild-pattern Hawaii shirts, really know a lot about cocktails and actually mix much more than what’s on the menu. From "Dark+Stormy" and the classic "Alexander” to "Bride from Ipanema". Despite its Tiki-style, the small, clearly structured bar enjoys some pretty elegant furniture – and its guests are in just as good a mood as the barkeepers.
