"Heya Girls!"
Sometimes traditions are nice things. Like now, for example: The annual summer break is just around the corner and, as always, I'm serving you the best restaurant and shop tips of the last few months in this issue instead of the weekly events. And I recommend the most refreshing book for this summer: “Baden im Land um Wien”. My pocket guide for summer vacationists and bathing belles, which was published in June, was sold out after only 5 weeks (the author's heart leaps with joy ;-) and is available again this week! I have found dozens of destinations in Lower Austria and Burgenland for the perfect swim day – in romantic river baths and thermal springs, in chic lakes, nostalgic turn-of-the-century baths and modern aqua parks. And there are plenty of insider tips, of course! Like the natural swimming pool Bernstein (photo), which lies like a gem in the forest and is home to the best beach buffet in the country. You can find a sample here. So, go get yourself some crystal-clear water and summer happiness!

Wishing you a wonderful August
Your CitySpotterGirl

Baden im Land um Wien. Available in every book shop and in our web shop. Web

P.S. We’ll be back on 26 August with a special newsletter – and from 2 September onwards as usual!

 Mark Graninger
Dekorative
Her collecting mania and his flea market strolls with his mum come together in the vintage shop “Dekorative”: As a couple, art historian Angelika Nemeth and Mark Graninger work up furniture from the 50s to the 70s, collecting antiques with witty recognition value. Between sideboards made of mahogany, teak commodes and rosewood tables, you wind your way to the almost life-size porcelain rooster, old suitcases, Scandinavian Sixties interiors and charming knick-knacks. This is definitely a shop for treasure huntresses ;-)

Paul&Vitos
Now first of all, CitySpotterGirl has to rave about the interior. Floor-to-ceiling windows, walls painted in soft pistachio green, velvet-covered chairs, beautiful tiled floor and, as a highlight, a hand-blown paravent by Robert Comploj in pink and purple – Paul&Vitos really looks damn nice! And it's a mixture of café and restaurant, so you can pop in all day for a drink or a bite to eat. Important to know: the portions are quite small, so if you're hungry you will have to order several of them. What a cosmopolitan place to hang out in!

ihana
CitySpotterGirl always rates venues according to their food and their ambiance. But here I have to note something else first: I haven’t seen such a nice audience as at the ihana in years! The Finnish café looks really pretty (ambience) and has some really unusual things on the menu (food), but a visit to the café turns into an experience because of the wonderful customers and the great boss Hanna Yrjölä. She came as an au pair and stayed. And now she provides us with cinnamon rolls, smörrebröd and above all Karjalanpiirakka with egg butter. Can't be explained, you just have to taste it ;-)

 Sissi Vogler
Refished
This makes grandma happy too: Refished-captain Sissi Vogler has moved into the ninth district with her old dining room furniture and has furnished her first store for cheerfully colourful bags made of upcycled cement bags and fish food bags. Bubbling fish and iconic logos decorate shoppers, bags and backpacks, which are light, water-repellent and robust thanks to the material. So they can take a lot. The production is transparent and fair: everything is made by hand in a workshop for mine victims in Cambodia, the seamstresses even sign the pieces. The stylish old building boutique opens this week!

Boxwood
Looks stylish, this place. Like some kind of modern country house style, with giant velvet sofas between the dining tables, playful wallpaper, floor-to-ceiling windows and lots of plants. Shortly before the lockdown, newcomer Benjamin Buxbaum (aha!) opened his second restaurant here at the entrance to Heiligenkreuzerhof. Regional and Mediterranean dishes are supplied from the kitchen, cleverly interpreted – truffled Eiernockerl, fish & chips from Waldviertler catfish and salsiccia burgers. From creative breakfasts to inexpensive lunch menus and elegant evenings: the Boxwood is a tip for any time of day.

das suess`kind
It' s quite audacious to open a new restaurant in times like these. But since so much love and finesse are put into the work here, they have already cooked up a lot of fans anyway. “Veganery” is the name of the casually furnished snack bar, take away has always been part of the concept. Organic and vegan is their principle in the kitchen, several vegetable dishes are prepared every day, which are then composed into a varied “potpourri”. You eat with your eyes as well – and since the chef is an artist, even the take away portions are served very artfully. Be sure to try the cinnamon swirls!

 Loja Portuguez
Loja Portuguez
Portugal is known to be hip and unfortunately heavily infested with Coronavirus right now, so we prefer to go to Gersthof. There, newcomer Peter Regatschnig has opened an unbelievably charming gourmet grocery shop that immediately transports you to Lisbon. Set up in elegant industrial style (yes, it exists), the shelves bend under high-quality gourmet fish preserves, olive oils, port wine, flor de sal, chocolates, chili sauces and beautiful accessories. The ceramics from Vista Alegre and the exquisitely woven scarves from Burelfactory look simply gorgeous. Definitely worth the journey from districts further away!

 Maiz
Maiz
What’s this? Tastes just like in Mexico but is entirely produced in Margareten. Monika Sims, who lived in Los Angeles for a long time and therefore knows what real tacos should be like, not only bakes perfect patties. She also makes the highly complicated corn dough herself – using corn from local organic farmers with a technique already used by the Aztecs. This makes the maize easier to digest and the tacos heavenly soft. The tacos are filled with variations that change daily, and there is always a vegetarian creation. Currently only available as a takeaway, but perfectly packaged despite the overflowing filling.

Hobby Mobila Vienna
Her sofa, which elicited a wow from all of the guests, gave Iulia Muntean the idea for her concept store. At Hobby Mobila Vienna she presents interior design from Romania by (still) unknown brands and artists: Mobiladalin's simple velvet sofas practically radiate in emerald green and the Bucovina line picks up on folklore flower embroidery. At Mindthegap, paintings and ornaments from Transylvania are being brought to life on wallpapers. The extremely minimalist tea porcelain by two artists is very much in vogue. Real design pieces!

Bellas Vienna
Brand new, beautifully renovated and radiantly bright: Jeannette Mang has transplanted her shoe business from the Internet to a house steeped in history (from 1371) in the 1st district. At Bellas, there are only a few types of shoes, but these are available in a vast number of different colours and combinations: the signature product are tassel loafers, but colourful and classic Chelsea boots also await the ladies for the autumn. Favourite combination at present: brown/pink. All shoes are produced by hand in small factories in Tuscany and are always available in limited quantities. Beautiful!

Le Pic
You are immediately tempted to say: a small piece of Paris in Vienna. But the small piece turns out to be surprisingly large. The front part of the brasserie, with its sofas and fauteuils, is quite comfortable and coffee-house like, in the back – with its gaudy wallpaper and brick walls – you can enjoy a pleasant meal at classic tables. And it tastes good! Beef bratwurst with puree, baguettes au gratin, leg of lamb and aligot (cheese fondue) bring France to your plate in culinary terms. Breakfast and dinner are also available – Le Pic is a restaurant for every time of day and every situation ;-)

SchönDing
Wonderfully whimsical! The Volkskundemuseum has revamped its museum shop, combining small, lovely things with the trove of a former hardware store (yes, really): Between mini-silhouettes in matchboxes and wooden printing stamps, one discovers heavy iron keys for a key ring and quirky odds and ends. What's special is the wrapping paper, for which textile patterns by Emilie Flöge were combined. SchönDing is not the biggest shop, but it is finely and openly designed, so that there is also room for art catalogues, books and a funny “Thing of the Month”.

Konzept:Greissler
A family-run general store, but in a cool way: The newly opened “Konzept:Greissler” is run by mother, aunt, daughter, nephew and nieces – and the service is as warm as the family. The mix of grey delicatessen counters and black wooden panelling is chic, and they sell ham, pastrami and rolls from the Kolm bakery. You can get fruit juices and dairy products directly from the farmer in the fridge. And for packaging-free shopping, you only have to turn right: there are unpackaged fresh eggs, pasta, flour, seeds, nuts and seasonal vegetables from the Viennese nursery Bach.

Augora
Fermentation is one of the most important cooking trends of our time, and Alexandra Liberda is an expert in this field. The career changer has just opened her fine shop, where you can buy all kinds of exciting things from kimchi to lemon pickle and walnut miso. In addition, changing dishes with fermented components are cooked daily, currently for take-away and hopefully soon in the elegant-chic restaurant section. The take-away food is filled in Rex jars (you can bring them back) – the herb mushrooms with bergamot polenta and lemon tempura already tasted delicious

Vintage Commone
A paradise for friends of high fashion with a slim(er) purse! The small shop is jam-packed up to the ceiling – you won't find any baggy second-hand fashion here, but selected pieces by Fendi, Versace, Kenzo, Moschino, Dior etc. For a Gucci bag or a special Burberry coat, you may easily spend a few hundred euros here. But owner Arian Alexander Commone’s goal is to make vintage fashion accessible to everyone, offering much cheaper items, as well. Plus, Commone also provides – super convenient – style advice to make sure you find just the right piece.

Wiener Chic
New and delightful: this little coffee house not only tempts its guests with seductive French sweets and coffee from Costa Rica, but also with elegance and style. A very long time ago, there used to be a glove factory situated here called Wiener Chic – and the young owners have extensively renovated it and turned it into a gem. The boss's wife happens to be an architect, what luck ;-) Now you can eat eclairs, lemon tarts, macarons and mini-cheesecakes in style and take a baguette with nuts or perfect croissants with you afterwards. So chic!

Living Kitchen at Zoku
Even if this wasn't such a fine, new place to eat and chill – the roof terrace alone is a hit and demands an immediate visit. You sit right next to the Wurstelprater, look down on all the crazy stuff and when the sun sets over the city, it becomes exceptional. Casually furnished, with super nice service people from all over the world – a cosmopolitan place with perfect brunch offers and a great atmosphere.

Fain
Well, Asian cuisine is not really famous for its stunning desserts. Matcha ice cream, and that's it. So, the idea of creating European patisserie with Asian ingredients seems all the more interesting – and that's exactly what the makers of the hot-pot restaurant “Mama Liu & Sons” are doing in their new patisserie. Yugu coconut slice, dangos, mango tiramisu, matcha cheese cake and hazelnut-sesame praline with sticky rice are all waiting to be tasted. You sit in modern, cool surroundings, cocktails are also served here, and on top of all that, it's also a modern tea house. Vienna has never had something like this before!

 Modus Vivendi
Domus Vivendi
The designer trio of Modus Vivendi has only moved two houses down the road, but the change is a big one! The shop for timeless knitwear fashion is now called Domus Vivendi and is casually international: open loft flair, bare concrete floors and lots of plants twining up the iron shelves. Key pieces are the beanies and jumpers made of mottled merino knitwear; since this is now a concept store, there’s also international and domestic fashion, such as from Eva Blut and Rosa Mosa. The work is done on the machines directly in the shop, so you can watch fashion being created live!

575Sagmeister
Old inn, revitalised! After years of vacancy, Paulusplatz now offers great food. With regional ingredients, of course – the 575 in the name indicates the kilometre radius from which the products come – and with reference to Viennese cuisine. But with a twist! The (terrific) goulash comes in a dark chocolate beer juice and the courgette salad is served with lemon dressing. The look is fun too: the old wooden benches remain, but have been reupholstered in a wild mix of fabrics. Huge peacocks adorn the back wall of the restaurant, and the antlers on the wall are bright red. Very, very cool!
