"Heya Girls!"
Directly behind the Volkstheater is one of Vienna's oldest cinemas. The Bellaria opened in 1912 – and had to close at Christmas 2019 after more than 100 years. What was left behind was a crowd of sad cinema-goers and nostalgics: For the Bellaria not only had a vintage interior, but also showed vintage films from the 1940s, 50s and 60s in the afternoon. On the last business, day Actress Waltraut Haas came and sang “Sag beim Abschied leise Servus” together with the cinema-goers. But now – good news! – it looks like the cult cinema has a future. The Votiv Kino team and the operators of “Burggasse 24” want to reinvent the Bellaria: as a cinema, a cultural hotspot and a café. Instead of junk food, there will be home-made slow food – served directly in the hall. A crowdfunding campaign is currently underway to finance the new cinema technology – anyone who wants to support historical flair with fresh impetus can already help out with a few euros!

Wishing you a promising week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Lena Hoschek Winter Sale
Wow, now that's a sale that's hard to pass up! From dirndls to rumba tops – everything that comes out of Lena Hoschek's fashion studio is inspiring. And when the likeable power-woman announces her winter sale, you have to be quick, for the pieces are in great demand. The sale takes place in the shops and online: The “Biedermeier Collection” is reduced by 50 percent, which is especially pleasing for the beautiful dresses. But the prices of blouses, knitwear and trousers have also been halved. Envious looks when wearing the splendid pieces are included in the price ;-)

 Grand Ferdinand
Opera Ball in the Grand Etage
Alles Walzer? More like: The buffet is open! This year's Opera Ball was cancelled because of you-know-what. But if there's no ball, then at least a glamorous spectacle à la Opera Ball: dinner at the Grand Ferdinand Hotel am Ring. It's only a stone's throw from the opera house and the command “Alles Walzer” doesn't open the Opera Ball, but the buffet. It begins opulently with vol-au-vent with wild boar ragout, which is followed in quite a princely manner by a flying buffet with veal à la Metternich, an original Viennese court ball soup and delicious main courses.

Russia without Vodka?
Pojechali! The Russian Gentlemen Club sings and plays its way into all our hearts today. And asks several questions at once: How do you celebrate in Russia? And is vodka to the Russian like wine to the Viennese? Russkaja singer Georgij Makazaria, stage-Paganini Aliosha Biz, klezmer reloader Alexander Shevchenko and bandleader Roman Grinberg get the party going with their Russian songs and charm. Ex-Everyman Cornelius Obonya confronts them and tries to answer all open questions. And if all else fails, there's always another glass of vodka. Cheers!

Onkel Wanja – die Sitcom
This is perhaps not quite how Anton Chekhov imagined it! In four acts, a strangely entangled Russian family is awaiting eviction. Each one of the six main characters is preoccupied with their own domestic problems: from the failed writer Vanya to his hard-working cousin Sonja and Doctor Astrov, a doctor who can't stand the sight of blood. Knee-slappers and existentialism shake hands here. And Chekhov, the poster child of Russian literature, always wanted to make a comedy out of it anyway. Because he is funny. And very much so.

Making natural soaps yourself
A creative start to the weekend is offered by the Werklerei's soap making course this evening. The course introduces beginners to the art of natural soap making. Different oils and herbs as well as different boiling techniques make each soap a truly unique piece! Soap making is not only a fragrant little miracle, but also a very unhurried and relaxing affair – something everyone can use after a busy week. In the end, you will take home several homemade soaps, recipes and lots of ideas. Bring your own rubber gloves and an old towel!

Monabau Design with flea*
“New life from old fabrics” is Mona Bauernfeind's motto. The fashion designer makes garments, accessories and bags from reused, sometimes very untypical materials like old rain jackets. Which is creative, looks good and protects the environment in a sustainable way. On Friday and Saturday, Bauernfeind is a guest at Blauer Salon, with her collection in tow for visitors to feel and try on. But the pop-up is also a flea market: Bauernfeind wears almost only her own creations now, so she needs to make room in her wardrobe!

Playbackdolls
Finally, some live music concerts again! Today you can enjoy a Tini Trampler evening. The local chanteuse and her band make a somewhat different kind of Austro-pop: danceable theremin sounds, lots of charm and the occasional Tom Waits electric guitar. The musical fund from which Tini Trampler and electro mastermind Stephan Sperlich draw is huge – an accordion, jazzy keyboard melodies and the odd mariachi trumpet make listening a real experience. The lyrics are poetic social criticism with a wink – what more could you want?

Viva Venezia!
“When I think of Venice, I feel as if I had listened to beautiful music, read a good book or talked to a dear person,” said the painter Anselm Feuerbach. Venice has been romanticised for centuries, artists of every stripe have been a little enamoured of the city built on stilts. The Belvedere wants to get to the bottom of the origins of this love and is showing an exhibition on the “Invention of Venice in the 19th century”. On display are around 80 paintings, many by Austrian painters, peppered with literary and cinematic expressions of love.

For today's benefit concert for Unicef Austria, he brings together the crème de la crème of classical music: Top interpreters from last year's Worldvision Music Contest such as the Grammy Award-winning Korean soprano Sumi Jo or the Korean flutist Jasmine Choi. The young classical scene meets in the great hall of the Vienna Konzerthaus, it will be a feast for the ears. And best of all: all ticket proceeds go to charitable Unicef projects.

Free of charge: Fit in 12 weeks
It can't be helped. When the waistband of your trousers is getting tighter and your T-shirts smaller, you have to wrestle down your inner couch potato and take it for a walk. Which works quite well with the prep training for this year's Women's Run. Starting today! And that in different level groups at 50 locations all over Austria. In Vienna, for example, joggers are waiting in the starting blocks on the Wienerberg, in Schönbrunn or in the Lobau National Park. Beginners and pros are welcome, there are great tips from the trainer and together you are less alone. And yes: all free!

Project Pinocchio
Puppet theatre on a meta-level: this play is about artificial intelligence – and it was written by one! Scientists develop an AI in the form of a childlike robot. When their work raises the question of where it actually comes from, the researchers feed the fairy tale of the little wooden puppet Pinocchio into the robot's computer centre. The question arises: where does real life begin? The text of the play comes largely from the artificial intelligence GPT-2, a neural network that is able to write texts independently. The music was also written by an AI. The future is now!

Thomas Bernhard Machine
Seeing Christoph Grissemann without his constant partner Stermann is quite appealing – and don't worry, he won’t sing. The new show is a cabaret-concert-theatre hybrid: Grissemann provides the idea and vocals for a journey through Thomas Bernhard's work and life. Together with Manfred Engelmayr on electric guitar and David Reumüller on drums, he has formed a band dedicated to performing Bernhard's text passages. In between, Grissemann himself slips into the role of the great writer and recites the absurd and profound from numerous monologues. Wild!

Johanna Dohnal in portrait
“Treading softly for tactical reasons has always proved to be a mistake.” Johanna Dohnal is an icon of the women's rights movement in Austria. The SPÖ politician was Austria's first Minister for Women's Affairs and an avowed feminist. Starting today, a two-week exhibition aims to show what Dohnal's work in the 1980s and 1990s means for us. 21 women from different backgrounds were interviewed and portrayed in relation to her. Dohnal knew how to bring women from diverse social classes together – the exhibition will be trying to create something similar!

Bicycle flea market at WUK
The weather is slowly but steadily getting more spring-like, so it's time to get the bikes out of the basement again. Those who don't have one, don't worry: Every first Wednesday of the month there is a bicycle flea market at the WUK. Many privately owned bikes are on offer, and you might also find one or two vintage treasures for Puch lovers. Just test it, ask for advice and negotiate a price. The self-help workshop is open for repairs and spare parts. And if you have one bike too many: Just turn up at 15:00 with your ID and, with a bit of luck, collect some money!

Food Feelings
Afternoon coffee is only really cosy with cake, a romantic dinner always consists of at least three courses, and what helps with heartache? That's right, a whole pack of Ben & Jerry's. Eating is not just about taking in food, it is always associated with feelings. In her new book, nutritional psychologist Cornelia Fiechtl explains why that is and what you can do when emotional eating behaviour gets the upper hand. Because the inner urge to eat without being hungry and the bad conscience that follows are really not necessary. Today is the book presentation!

Master potter Melanie Sophie Mahlknecht was actually going to offer pottery classes, but due to the pandemic she postponed that to a more predictable later date. Instead, she now offers her beautiful handmade Portuguese-style tableware in the studio! Her signature pieces are cool, colourful table lamps made of stoneware clay. Other decorative objects and custom-made items of all sizes are also available here. The studio is also an open workshop and houses a huge kiln – Mahlknecht owns one of the largest in the city.

Cafe Freud
In the former home of Sigmund Freud, and right next to the Freud Museum, a new coffee house has opened. Very modern, very puristically furnished, very nice service – and a mural of the name giver looks down sternly on all visitors. The menu is small and consists of (excellent) toast and pies. The drinks menu is all the more select for that: the coffee comes from Süßmund, the excellent tea from Demmer, the wines from local vintners. Power sockets next to every table and free Wi-Fi make the café really convenient. Yes, it’s certainly nice sitting here!
