Tipps der Stadtspionin

editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Krawutzikapuzi! As some people know I have kept my mind young despite my advanced age. Frankly speaking: I’m childish. And that’s why I’m overjoyed that Kasperl will once again yell “Bussi-Bussi” at the beautiful, nostalgic puppet-theatre at the Wiener Urania. Because the charming theatre with a Viennese touch has experienced a lot since its foundation in 1949. Most recently the takeover by hotshot Andre Heller. Who will be galloping across the stage on 4 October with his magic fairytale “The Unicorn” right on time for the season opening. The story takes Kasperl, Pezi & co to the circus where unicorn Tusnelda causes a stir. And since CitySpotterGirl appreciates unicorns, funny dialogues and the art of puppet theatre, she basically has no choice but to ride there. Isn’t it nice when a 70-year-old iconic institution stands the test of time? Just like the tight friendship between Kasperl and Pezi. Grin and great joy!

Wishing you a giggling week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

AcroYoga: Thursday “Flight Club”
All good things come in threes: AcroYoga unites the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics and the benign grace of a Thai massage (NUAD). Meaning, you do exercises in couples that help you rediscover the feeling of being carried and supported but also your own power and gentleness. Every Thursday you can try AcroYoga at the Yogabund Studio in the 15thdistrict – even without any previous knowledge or partner. After a short yoga-warm-up session and some couple-exercises, it’s on to the flying and taking off! And at the end there is a nice little Thai massage!

Randi Tytingvåg
The singer and songwriter Randi Tytingvåg reminds you a bit of Pippi Longstocking somehow. Maybe because she is so completely at ease and unconstrained on the stage. Or maybe because as “Norway’s most fascinating voice”, she couldn’t care less about all conventions. In any case, the musical miracle is in Vienna tonight and bewitches everyone who likes her with her very personal 101 of poetic lyricism and melodic airiness. CitySpotterGirl is all blown away by the heartrending jazz, folk and pop songs and the eccentric banjo picking. Listen in here!

Public Rehearsal: Theblondproject
Word has already gotten around that everything is new and different now that Martin Kušej has taken over the Burg (oops, you always have to say “Burgtheater” now ;-) But it hasn’t spread yet that they are still looking for a test audience for today’s public rehearsal of the new piece Theblondproject! Top-actresses Caroline Peters and Gesine Danckwart will bring their very personal, bizarre-amusing blonde-realisations to the stage for the first time. With text, music, video and lot of charm, obviously! Quick, secure yourself a free ticket at the Bundestheater ticket office! Code word: “blond”, grin.

Kalachakra World Peace Week
Just imagine: a world free of rivalry, greed and conflict. That’s exactly what the Buddhist Kalachakra teachings are all about. And on that topic, there is currently a very special guest in Vienna: Tibetan monk and Kalachakra teacher Khentrul Rinpoche. He is a true master of this highest Buddhist meditation technique. Plus: he knows how to do world peace! From today you have the truly unique opportunity to witness the creation of a three-dimensional mandala, the accompanying ceremonies, ritual dances and practice meditation for a whole weekend.

Argentinean Dance Show “Vida!”
You get hot just from watching ;-) The two star-dancers Nicole Nau and Luis Pereyra have revived the pure, real Tango Argentino with their dance compañia. And brought it to the stage of Akzent Theater with their new show “Vida!”. You will hear breathtaking tango, chacarera and zamba rhythms and see passionate dances, wild drum interludes and the high Boleadoras art of throwing lassos. A really spectacular dance show with extravagant costumes, live music and South American atmosphere. Keeping still should prove difficult… Trailer here!

Die schöne Wienerin
Today, city-insider Elisabeth Wolf will once again lead an exclusive little group through hidden parts of Vienna. And – abracadabra – secret doors on the topic of fashion will open. For instance, the curious will totter by the former salons of Fred Adlmüller, Adele List and Emilie Flöge in the inner city. And learn why all of Vienna had their noses pressed against the windows of the “Haus zum goldenen Becher” in the year of 1804. But the definite highlight of the tour is the private visit of couture-star Susanne Bisovsky’s atelier. With coffee, cake and a surprise. Yep!

Volunteer Fair
A “Yes, I do” is what should pass the lips of people with big hearts wanting to help at the Rathaus today. No, we’re not talking about marriage but of doing good! The Volunteer Fair takes place there with 100 NGOs, small associations and initiatives that present their projects in an uncomplicated and specific manner and invite you to join them. Plus, there are lectures and readings taking place, like from Lotte Tobisch and Susanne Scholl. Everyone who’s been toying with the idea of volunteering but didn’t really know what, how, where, and when is just at the right place here!

Helen Schneider: Movin’On
Now, a lady is pretty much always on the move anyway these days. But with the soul songs by US singing legend Helen Schneider this happens in a pleasant, completely stress-free way :-) Today the Brooklyn native is in Vienna and has brought the newest soundtrack to her life. And since Mrs Schneider has had some experiences in her life including high and low points, some of her songs really hit close to home! “Break The Chain” is an optimistic one, for example. Or: “Movin’ On”. You should take that very advice and rock out at tonight’s folk-pop spectacle!

Long Night of Museums
With only one ticket into all museums of the city until after midnight: countless museums in Vienna (and all of Austria) host visitors again for a whole night today, offering great specials for some well-rounded eye- and brain candy. Among them are renowned ones like Naturhistorisches Museum featuring the motto “Moonstruck” or the mumok with an open atelier where everyone can draw. But you also have some odd stuff: they fold 1,000 origami-cranes at the Weltmuseum (to make a wish come true) and at Pratermuseum tarot reader “Veronika Poposill” reads the future to the daring ;-)

1. Plantfest
Well, the hip Packhaus in Marxergasse is turning into a true jungle today! Together with amateur botanist Iwona Laub, the creative heads from we love handmade have initiated Vienna’s first community event for plant lovers. And this means, apart from an opulent plant exchange platform, that there’s also a proliferating shopping area. There are plant bargains from Flowercompany, for example, pretty decorations from Fairschenkt and “green” craft treasures by we love handmade. So just bring any of your excess plants and swap and shop to your heart’s content.

Polly Adlers Nymphen in Not
Hurrah! Polly Adler alias Angelika Hager is back! And she’s as witty and charming as usual – with a new Sunday matinee show and certainly new high heels as well ;-) For the first time, comedy rocket Ulrike Beimpold will be part of the girl-power combo with Maria Happel and Petra Morzé too. Having rocked Rabenhof with “Breakfast at Polly’s” for three years, the ladies now totter through everyday-madness with the motto “Nymphen in Not”. They chatter (and laugh!) about Botox ghosts, instagramitis and that idiotic occupation called love. Today’s the premiere!

Cher: Here We Go Again
So the legendary “Goddess of Pop” is actually coming to Austria! For the first time in over fifteen years! That’s totally a reason for a girl to scream a little ;-) Apart from her mega hits, the Emmy-, Grammy- and Golden Globe winner who has sold way more that 100 million records, will also pay some tribute to ABBA. After all, the multi-talent just starred in the 2018 Hollywood film “Mamma Mia 2”. Her artificial makeover in the last few years is a matter for dispute, her everlasting, indestructible voice and her emancipating influence on the world of music are not.

Politics and Women
On 4 March 1919, Adelheid Popp was the first woman to raise her voice in the Austrian parliament to campaign for women’s rights. She accomplished the leap from a destitute, uneducated immigrant family into parliament. How did she manage to become the pioneer of the Austrian women’s movement? Does gender have an influence on politics? Do women still have to overcome bigger hurdles in politics than men? Sibylle Hamann, publisher of a book about Popp, is part of a discussion tonight with other women in politics about struggles and challenges in the year 2019.

Off the couch!
Yes, this here today is a book presentation. And yes, there is a good reason it’s taking place in a sports store :-) After all, the enthusiastic jogger, neuroscientist and author Manuela Macedonia tells you how to finally outwit your inner couch potato. And how you can enhance your body and brain power at the same time. The secret lies – unbelievable but true – in a combination of memory training and running. And one thing is certain: the realistic motivational diary “Runter vom Sofa!” with its 365-days-challenge will win over even the last couch potato. Fascinating lecture!

Vienna Felt-Festival Week
The basic recipe is actually quite simple: water + wool = felt. However, a successful Vienna Felt Festival Week does take bit more than that. Exciting international exhibitors, for example, top-class workshops as well as pretty felt things for sale. Tonight is the opening – with a fashion show, vernissage, felt zithering and a great water drop-felt-party. From today, the courses start: Tanja Kahl felts “Dicke Damen”, Steffi Holzgräwe creates funny “Kapseln & Schoten” and Martina Wahl scents “roses”. For everyone who want to experience wool metamorphosis with their own hands.

Luzia Ellert – Wearable Photography
Blimey, this lady knows how to do photography! Although in Luzia Ellert’s studio it’s not her newest food- and still life pics that you can admire today but a small, fine fashion collection. Obviously, photographs still play the main role, though. For they have been artfully printed onto fabrics and then made into dresses, skirts and shoppers. “Wearable Photograpy”, so to speak! By the way, every Wednesday in October, Ellert’s studio opens its doors for other artists too. On 16 October, Klara Neubauer brings her fashion, on 30 October, Olivia Weiß her ceramics. Neat!

100 Years Bauhaus & 90 Years ŠUR
Everyone may know the Bauhaus school founded in 1919 in Weimar by Walter Gropius. And its enormous influence on 20th century architecture and design. But only few know that Classic Modernism was heavily pushed in Bratislava as well – a bit time-delayed. The centre there: the Kunstgewerbeschule ŠUR, founded in 1928. The purpose was the same: spreading modernism, practical relevance, workshop- and material know-how. Selected works of our neighbours can be seen at the Slovak Institute starting now. Today is the opening! With Futurit Schellack disco :-)

PV Vienna
The fashion youngsters in Vienna really know their stuff! For a year, designer Viktoria Peschl has been running her classic label “PV Vienna”, now there’s – freshly opened – her studio shop. Between bales of cloth, figurines and nostalgic mirrors, style fans can now admire the new collection coming at you in a beautifully timeless and fancy way. High-quality fabrics (like Vieböck linen or the fibre of the future Tenzel from Upper Austria), straight cuts, lots of pinstripes, blouses and skirt wrapping. And everything is masterfully sewn – you can tell the masterclass ;-) Ladies feel like with Coco, just in Viennese.

Das kleine Paradies
There is nothing small about this! The typewriter-shop that resided here in the past, was spacious and obviously quite splendid. And since the stately venue has been renovated with lots of love for the new restaurant, it has turned out to be one of the coolest, most beautiful and most unusual venues in all of Vienna. Marble and intarsia included. And they also know how to cook here! There is a menu every day for lunch (the formidable Eschi Fiege has transferred her famous lunch table here!) and cake and snacks in the afternoon and at night they prepare some rather big meals. And they are delicious!
