editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Sometimes I am said to become more and more sentimental with age. But I see it differently: I’m returning to childlike joy. For example, when somewhere in Dresden a person I don't know at all makes beautiful collages with paper from our “Wiener Muster Buch” and then posts them on the web, it brings tears to my eyes. Yes, sorry, I do know that sounds cheesy! But these little works of art make me so happy, and above all I am touched by something very special: how connected we all are in the world. What invisible threads we spin – often without knowing it – with our actions and our thoughts. The books of my small Viennese publishing house bring sparkle and joy into the lives of people who live hundreds or even thousands of kilometres away. It just makes my heart soar. On the new Instagram account of Wundergarten Verlag, we now regularly post the collages of Angela from Dresden – by the way, she produces “Dresdner Pappen”, nostalgic paper ornaments. And if you want to know which fine books will soon be published by Wundergarten, subscribe to the publisher's newsletter. All without any sentimentalism ;-)

Wishing you a touching week,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Sale at elfenkleid
Dear pixies, it's that time again: elfenkleid is having a sale! As we all know, the designs are not exactly cheap, but the longer the days get, the more the prices are reduced: From now on, there's a discount of up to 40% on the delicately flowing and wonderfully warm-wrapping dresses, sophisticated overalls and casual knitted cardigans of the autumn/winter collection. A cool top with batwing sleeves costs 174€ instead of 290€, a smart winter-white walk wrap dress is now 210€. And a shirtdress is also suitable for cool spring days, after all ;-) Better whiz there fast!

After the End and Before the Beginning
And they lived happily ever after? Kind of unsatisfying. You do have to wonder sometimes: How do stories continue after the credits have rolled? And how did they – right at the beginning – start in the first place? A cool installation at the Theatre Museum tells the invented “before” and “after” of nine icons of classic plays – on screens in old peep-boxes! Lady Macbeth gives her taxi driver an introduction to the art of murder, Hamlet has to go to a funeral and Blanche DuBois has a bloody lousy date. In any case, there's no guarantee for a happy ending ;-)

 Manuela Macedonia
Eat yourself smart
You eat with your eyes first – but also with your brain! So says neuroscientist Manuela Macedonia, who has written a clever book on nutrition for the upper storey: “Iss dich klug!” (Eat yourself smart) that she will present today at Thalia via Facebook stream and is already revealing some insider tips: Where the preference for sweets resides in our heads, why fasting is good for the brain and which foods damage the thinking apparatus. But don't worry, it's not all about renunciation; there's plenty of praise for certain fats. Macedonia makes the latest research tangible with her humour and personal stories.

Brecht Festival
When Stefanie Reinsperger and Meret Becker work their way through Bertolt Brecht and Suse Wächter has her ingenious puppets sing Brecht songs (including Honecker and Pavarotti) – then it's time for a virtual trip to Augsburg. Now, CitySpotterGirl is not the biggest Brecht fan ever, but definitely a groupie of the annual Augsburg Brecht Festival. This time the creative and often wild approach to theatre and literature is moved to the web: 23 net premieres present a genre mix of performance, poetry, music, film, literature and cinema. Starts today!

Market at F23
Now this almost feels like normal life again right now: weekend strolls, a little bit of shopping, a little bit of snacking. The F23 cultural centre, the former Sargfabrik in Atzgersdorf, makes it possible. On Friday and Saturday there will be a “Vintage and more store” from 10:00 to 19:00, where you will be able to purchase furniture of all styles, clothes, accessories and (also unusual) unique pieces of all kinds. On Saturday, they will also offer some culinary delights from a wide variety of vendors at the “Schmankerlmarkt” in the inner courtyard of the F23.

Mary Jane’s Soundgarden
You’d need a crystal ball to be able to foresee the end of the club lockdown. Which Club 1019 doesn't have either, obviously, so they just changed their concept without further ado. Cancelled concerts were made up for and recorded without an audience – as of today, the shows will be released as YouTube premieres. You can chat with the musicians during the release. They start with the groovy rhythm group “Mary Jane's Soundgarden” who deliver a super danceable mix of James Brown, 1960s funk and modern hip-hop. Mega: the explosive lead singer Tanja Peinsipp!

Vienna Refugee Ball live stream
The ball season is Vienna's 5th season and was cancelled this year! Well, not quite: because the 27th Vienna Refugee Ball is moved to the online stage today and is streamed live and free of charge from the Rathaus. The first live act is Sigrid Horn, who sings with a bell-like voice to the ukulele in a dialect that cannot be clearly defined – sounds fascinating. Pianist/rocker Martin Klein will also tickle the ivories live, and as a highlight there's a recorded concert by Kurt Ostbahn and his band. And why not use the festival as an opportunity to dress up as well? Shoo into your prettiest robe!

 Kunsthalle Wien
Weaving Truths, Untangling Fictions
At the end of Black History Month, you should have seen these two award-winning installations: The Kunsthalle Wien Prize exhibition features the works of the winners Abiona Esther Ojo and Huda Takriti. In huge, braided plaits, the former depicts Afro hairstyles and what can be read into their appearance – identity, ritual, collective memory and signs of protest. Syrian-born Takriti shows her experiences with fleeing her country and her search for identity in a slide show: analogue and digital images superimposed. Free admission at Karlsplatz.

 Hildebrandt Café
Buchteln from Hildebrandt Café
Pandemic-weary Vienna seems to have found a sweet answer to Corona: Buchteln to go! The sugared lockdown treat is popping up all over town right now; the sweet things are also baked at the Vollpension and at the Bootshaus on the Alte Donau. Now the beautiful Hildebrandt Café in the Volkskundemuseum has joined in and ensures the supply of pastries: From Friday to Sunday, take-away boxes are available for Buchteln, warm from the oven, with apricot jam and vanilla sauce on top. No advance order necessary, but they are rationed to 100 pieces per day!

 Architektur für alle
Creative session for living ideas
Never before have people spent so much time within their own four walls. Blemishes stand out and you’ve grown tired of yesteryear’s pretty wall colour. Whether renovating, moving or redecorating: thanks to architect Lisi Wieser, the living project is conceived and planned together in live creative sessions. Her platform “Architektur für alle!” offers joint sketch brainstorming for decorating ideas: in coaching sessions using plans or photos, thoughtful and unconventional solutions are created live and in no time at all. It's extremely practical and you are directly involved in every step.

Chair dance
No more sitting still! With choreographer Aurelia Staub, the desk chair is repurposed after work – as a training tool. Her Zoom course “Sesseltanz” (chair dance) is not quite like the children's game, but it's just as much fun ;-) With dance steps from improv art and soul music, you get into the swing of things, and Staub demonstrates the flowing movements. Once the body is gently and excitingly loosened up, you won’t just stay glued to your chair, of course: again and again, you move freely and prance all the way to the kitchen. Those who prefer twirling around incognito simply leave the camera off.

Reneé Schröder in the herb lab
From molecules to yarrow, nettle and amber: the retired top biochemist Reneé Schröder came to explore alpine wild herbs on the southern slopes of her Salzburg farm. Today, she shares her knowledge of wild plants in an online conversation: she refines blossoms, leaves and roots with healing properties into ointments, tinctures, teas and creams. The book on the project “Kräuterwissen aus dem Lammertal”, in which Schröder is involved, is presented to match the topic. By the way, she revealed to CitySpotterGirl what she herself likes to read

I can't do that! I'm sure you've said this yourself before and you're in good company: Brigitte Bierlein turned down the Federal President's request to become Austria's first female chancellor with exactly these words. But she could – and how! Why she said yes to the jobs after all and how she skilfully steered the country through the huge Ibiza scandal – today we’ll find out!

 Kittisak Limwatthananon
Art from Thailand: Talk to me
He bears the unpronounceable name Kittisak Limwatthananon. Fortunately, he calls himself Jewwej, because you’ll have to remember the 42-year-old Thai! Fineliner, Stanley knife and scissors are his tools – with them he paints, draws, folds and cuts his favourite material, paper. The results are collages that look straight out of a fantasy world: whales drift between clouds and planets, a human heart beats in colourful individual parts and rabbits get lost in a mushroom forest. Fortuna Galerie is showing the works of the artist from Bangkok from today!

Die Schwalbe
The unusual prints of “Die Schwalbe” have been on display at markets like Edelstoff & Co for a number of years. But the shop is actually at home in an old building flat in Margareten which has been converted into a boutique and workshop. Graphic designer Jürgen Hofmann silkscreens the vegan shirts and hoodies, he finds the motifs in old newspapers and his historical book collection from 1850: cool advertising subjects with a retro look, illustrations of flamingos and giraffes or very finely drawn artichokes. Octopuses in comic style and classic old school look come from the tattoo scene.

 Ramen Makotoya
Ramen Makotoya
The restaurant already exists in Osaka, Japan, and has now made the (rather long) leap to Vienna in the middle of the lockdown. For all the fans of the Japanese super soup, this guarantees that authentic ramen will indeed be served here. The delicious broth is based on beef, chicken or mushrooms (vegan) here at Makotoya and, with noodles, toppings and meat, becomes a soul food main course for Viennese foggy weather and nasty moods. Of course, it's only take-away at the moment, but the friendly service is already catching the eye. The motto “love at first slurp” will definitely find many fans!
