"Heya Girls!"
When my noble great-grandma was 65, she bought herself – scandal! – her first pair of trousers. Before, it had been completely unthinkable for her to wear men’s clothes. Until the end of her life, she was angry because nobody had told her before how comfortable they were. Fashion as a vehicle of emancipation: The story of our formerly “male” trousers equally applies to our Japanese colleagues’ Haoris. Until the 19th century, only men wore those special Kimono jackets – until the Geishas in Edo were fed up with wintery freezing and took them over. The married upper-class women followed suit – and in the 20th century, the silk jackets finally became a symbol of emancipation. Be it inside or outside, since then all women are wearing Haoris. And this week, the gorgeous Kimonos are available in a pop up store in Vienna for the first time: vintage Haoris from the 1960s to 80s, all of them made in Japan, all of them individual pieces. And all of them tell a story.

Wishing you an elegant week

Maze: art at WUK
Let’s be curious! Many of us only know the WUK because of its concerts; today, you can get an idea of the artistic activities in the old brick building. After all, it accommodates 29 ateliers and studios where artists busily paint, model, tailor and print. Today, the labyrinth of self-administered rooms opens its doors and more than 40 artists show their art and work. Performances, concerts, readings, workshops and a giant water wing installation on the roof provide additional action ;-)

Patricia Kelly
In Patricia Kelly’s own words, her new album “Grace&Kelly“ is the most personal one she has ever written. The offspring of the legendary “Kelly Family“ has touched her audience as a solo artist since 2008; her fans have long grown out of teenage. Emotional songs such as “I don’t wanna fight“ or “Get up and walk“ tell about a time in her life that was determined by painful losses and fears, but also by optimism – and lots of love. A bit schmaltzy maybe, but linguistically and vocally pleasantly accurate and, in combination with the piano accompaniment, very lovely.

Contemporary Croatian Design
Austrians know Croatia as a holiday destination. It’s not far away and there’re beaches and the sea. However, until now we perhaps haven’t paid enough attention to Croatian design while getting sunburnt. Now we have the chance to catch up on it! The designforum exhibition “in a nutshell“ displays contemporary Croatian design – and proves that Croatia’s creativity scene is a very multi-faceted one! Amongst the around 100 graphic-, fashion- and product design works you’ll find pieces by the renowned design collective “Numen / For Use“. Ladies are also well represented: Vanja Cuculić, Josipa Stefanec and Co.

Guided tour through St. Marx cemetery
Joseph II landed us with it: In 1780, the emperor forbade funerals in churches and crypts and so he had cemeteries constructed in the suburbs. The St. Marx cemetery is one of those Biedermeier cemeteries – one of the last ones in the country! Now, in spring, it’s absolutely idyllic: Lilac blooms in abundance, a cloud of fragrance surrounds the romantic park. Today, a guided tour with stories about the Biedermeier life and the Viennese funeral services takes place. And, of course, celebrities’ graves are visited – Mozart, Josef Madersperger (inventor of the sewing machine) or the Prater legend Basilio Calafati.

Mothers in the Albertina
Be it the scandalously erotic presentation of Marc Chagall’s naked, breast-feeding mother, Kus‘ma Petrow-Wodkin’s politically (and perspectively) controversial mother figure, Greta Freist’s rarely exhibited family portrait or Kasimir Malewitsch’s rural mother – motherhood has always been a popular theme for painters. The Albertina also displays many paintings of mothers – and on the occasion of today’s Mother’s Day, closer attention will be given to them: in three special guided tours, searching for mum in art.

Shakespeare Dances
John Neumeier has already created several choreographies for William Shakespeare’s pieces. Today, he presents a kind of best of with his Hamburg dance group: three of his originally full-length Shakespeare ballets are staged on one single evening. The central element of the evening is Neumeier’s version of “Hamlet”, nimbly encircled by the two comedies “As You Like It“ and “Twelfth Night“ – the latter one interpreted with Vivaldi music. Probably the most beautiful way of expressing the stories of the English playwright without words. Wow!

Eddie Izzard
I have no idea how this guy does it, but: The English stand-up comedy star already performed his programme in the Gartenbau cinema three years ago and caused laughing fits with his “Eddie Izzard Show” in finest British English. Now he comes again – and, linguistically highly talented, he presents his successful programme “Force Majeure“ in German! Afterwards, Eddie is willing to answer questions by the audience. A no less eloquent support act will be given by maschek, performing in English today: “maschek. talks it over - now in english“. Surely funny!

Asparagus from Alfred Mühl’s farm
Eating asparagus is the best spring detox treatment. If you want to enjoy very special asparagus, you have to make your way to the edge of town, to Aderklaa. The insider tip is called Bauernhof Mühl. Asparagus is cut daily – and every day, including Sundays and bank holidays, it is sold freshly in the pretty farm shop. Of course, they offer both green and white stems and, despite the excellent taste, prices are still very moderate. Strawberries are already available as well! And if you don’t make it to Aderklaa, you can still order at farm-gate prices in the Alles Deko Outlet.

eat | art at the Bristol
Wow, this is a truly original idea for a hotel anniversary! The ancient Bristol celebrates its 100th birthday this year (inter alia) in a creative way with an installation in the winter garden. As of today, hundreds of jam glasses are piled up in a table-high cube, each of them being filled with mementos of the hotel history: diverse cutlery, porcelain, photos, menus, napkins but also less luxurious items such as hygiene products or cleaning utensils. Props of kitchen, suite and broom closet tell the story of the hotel…

Great women from Leopoldstadt
There’s probably no other district in Vienna that is home to so many famous women as Leopoldstadt. An exhibition in the district museum is now dedicated to the life of some female inhabitants of Leopoldstadt who were politically, entrepreneurially or artistically active. Very interesting history lessons, for example when it comes to the Viennese Jew Lise Meitner – who, after all, co-discovered nuclear fission, or the career of the teacher and social democratic politician Stella Klein-Löw. World Wise Women
Be honest – when talking about famous philosophers we first of all think of male names. Today, a new book, which finally tells the story of women in philosophy, is being presented: the authoresses portrayed 22 female philosophers from the ancient world to modern times in speech and picture. The list of “forgotten achievements” of wise women and false attributions is long and prevails throughout the entire history. Starting with the Socratic dialogue, which was originally founded by Aspasia, up to the 1st Socialist manifesto dating back to Flora Tristan.

Die Oidn
The optician Rudi Kern loves his “Oidn”. The worn-out vintage glasses of different decades have been accumulating in the Africa-donation-drawer in his shop in Favoriten for years. Chic designer shades, wild revolutionary glasses and odd standard-issue frames - some of them were so close to the glasses-aficionado and optician that he just didn’t have the heart to give them away. This is why the fancy vintage originals are now lovingly polished, equipped with new glasses and sold. Hipster factor: veeery high! 30 % of the sales revenue of each model is donated to the project “OneDollarGlasses“. Cool idea!

Erich
Golden times! In the last months, so many new restaurants have opened that it is hard to keep up. And so, this tip comes a bit late: the Erich. The little brother of Ulrich at Ulrichsplatz is really small. A bar, a few tables, and that’s it. But most of the café-bar is entirely coated with gold leaf. Golden walls, ceiling, corridor – you’ll soon forget the narrowness of the room. And at the latest when the food is served, “golden” becomes the overall impression. Great tacos with chilli beef or crispy quinoa, amazing salads and delicious skewers. Great tip! And the warmer the weather, the bigger the Erich: tables outside!
