"Heya Girls!"
When princess Pamina is being kidnapped and we can decide for ourselves at the Stadtpark if Tamino or the cool Papageno should rescue her, accompanied by Mozart’s magic music. When there are empty-site concerts (including Attwenger!) happening in Neu Marx and a Turkish-Austrian love story turns into a comedy at the Brunnenmarkt. When a Day of Frogs is happening at the Esterhazypark (no promises of princes!) and bikini queens and swimming trunks Travoltas are circling their hips in Simmering at a silent swimming pool disco. Then, my dear ladies, the festival “Wir sind Wien” (“We are Vienna”) is starting. For 23 days, starting on June 1st, the city becomes a highly creative (and entertaining!) stage for beautiful, crazy and captivating performances, every day in a different district. And since I have lived in various big cities, I can say without a doubt: no other city is quite as imaginative as Vienna! Opening is on Wednesday at the Volksgarten.

Wishing you a quirky week

Reinhard Plank Vienna
The extraordinary and chic hats from Reinhard Plank are well known in the US (even Brad Pitt wears them!), in Asia, France and Italy – but in Vienna not so much. The designer was born in South Tyrol and even though he studied at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, he has his atelier in Tuscany. There, his stylish headdresses are produced by hand, all of them are unique pieces, very wearable and made of classic materials ranging from fabric to paper. Now, around 140 Plank-hats are available exclusively in Austria at a pop up store in the city center – part of the selection are super summer hats in many straw variations!

Donaukanaltreiben
Party time on the water once again! Already for the 11th time the festival Donaukanaltreiben is providing happy summer vibes with concerts, culinary delights and lots of action at all locations from the club Grelle Forelle to the Strandbar Hermann. The 4-day-festival starts today with a bicycle-scavenger hunt and live acts like Avec, Jesper Munk, Ph. Lion and the Drew Rouse Band. At the Salztor Bridge a food & arts market is happening and the yellow boat taxi will be cruising on the water as well. Also nice: on Sunday you can start out your day with morning yoga at the Strandbar Hermann. Wonderful!

Esterhazygasse-festival
Always nice when the whole neighborhood and the harmonic coexistence is being celebrated happily! Today, the party is on at the (lower) Esterhazygasse: the street-locals are selling their products at 20 stands, ranging from vintage to handmade stuff to sweet treats, you can enjoy yourself at the four restaurant gardens from Finkh to Hafenjunge, party sounds are provided by the Prater WG, among others. What has become a classic of the festival, next to the costume flea market, is the Open Stage of the TAG, where there will not only be theater and music but also step dancing – if you are brave enough you can spontaneously go on stage;-)

Pasture milk-picnic at Augarten
Delight on the green grass, today at Augarten: there, you can try all kinds of fine Austrian delicacies all day long at the pasture milk-picnic (“Heumilch-Picknick”). All you have to do is get a bulging picnic basket then and there, full of fresh baked goods, fruit, ham, cheese and treats and easily enough to satisfy three hungry tummies. And you also get a picnic blanket. Additionally, you can sample ham from Berger, a new Joseph-bread and honey from Augarten. Talking about Augarten: the porcelain manufactory will be offering free guided tours at 11:00 and 16:00!

Long Day of Intestines
Books like “Gut” (“Darm mit Charme”) are booming, and by know (hopefully) everybody knows, what a colonoscopy is. It’s obvious: making sure your intestines are healthy is very important! At the MuseumsQuarter today it’s all about our longest organ – you can even walk through it. Kind of spooky to think about, but very interesting – and possible because of a 20 meters long intestine-model. There will also be intestine-friendly live cooking with Alfred Stadler, numerous expert lectures, info stands from support groups and patient-organizations and also the possibility of self-tests.

Vesakh-Festival
The Full Moon Day in May is the most important holiday of the year for many Buddhists. They simultaneously commemorate the birth, the enlightenment and the death of Buddha, events that according to tradition all happened during a full moon night in May. Today, there will be celebrations in Vienna as well – and everybody’s invited. The location of the celebration is particularly nice, because the festival is taking place in and around the Peace Pagoda at the Danube. It all starts with a spiritual part, which will be carried out both by monks and nuns. And afterwards it’s time to celebrate. Happy Vesakh!

“Herzstück”-flea market
Minimalism is the new road to happiness – you hear that a lot at the moment. Sounds good, but to just throw out personal favorite pieces is not as easy as it sounds. Some people who have managed to do so are selling their favorites at today’s “Herzstück” (“Precious pieces”) -flea market at Karlsplatz: clothes, accessories, vintage, handmade stuff & more. The entry fee will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Adrian K-dj will be providing chill beats and poetry slammer Michael Hornyik will be presenting his interpretation of a “precious piece”. There will also be a box to donate clothes for homeless. Nice and useful!

Co-working in the neighborhood
Better together than alone! This also applies to work and especially affects the many one-woman-shows and single warriors. And that is why the nice initiative “imGrätzl” (“in the neighborhood”) has come up with a great concept: cafés and restaurants that are closed during the day are converted into co-working spaces. There, solo-workers, who are usually bound to their workplace, can meet up on particular days with the goal of networking, knowledge-sharing and mutual support. Today there will be joint working happening at the K&K Hofspezereien in Stuckgasse, you can sign up here!

Science Fiction at the park
Lonely heroes are fighting in Margareten! At least at night, because at the Bruno-Kreisky-Park science fiction films will be shown on screen in an open air setting during ten evenings. And this year’s selection of films is all about the motto “Female” and focuses on the roles of women in sci-fi films: ranging from Catwoman to Tank Girl and Trinity! The summer cinema fun is for free, the film nights in Margareten are accompanied by “spacy” drinks and a mobile observatory in order to be able to observe the star-spattered sky. So, let’s go enjoy cinema, hammocks and the park atmosphere!

How to trick your mule
No, this is not a new edition of “Ox in a glass” ;-) On the contrary, Heike Linamayer’s lecture revolves around tricking the little stubborn mule that lures us to the fridge at night and makes us eat a whole huge chocolate bar super quickly. The lecturer knows from her own personal experience what it means to be overweight and has tried countless diets. By now, she has lost 40 kilograms – without a strict dietary regime and without prohibitions but instead with a new different attitude towards food. It is called losing weight while using your brain and you can find out more about it today at Soulsisters!

Roma: Millionaires of time...
It is said a lot that Roma seem to have fallen out of time. Or phrased in a positive manner: “We can come, whenever we want to”, says Frantisek, because he is “a millionaire of time”. Frantisek is one of the people portrayed in the new Roma-exhibition at the Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art. But who are “the Roma” actually? An ethnic group? A nation without a state, but with flag and anthem? The show focuses on the Roma people in Eastern Slovakia, where around 250.000 of them live, and it is an attempt to get a glimpse behind the clichés through photographs and audio-stories. Vernissage is today!

All the Sex I’ve Ever Had
Let’s talk about sex, grandma! Sex in higher ages is still a taboo in our youth-obsessed society. Today, it will finally be talked about, uninhibitedly and on a theater stage. The Festwochen are providing the framework for it, the extraordinary talk evening with sexually experienced senior citizens has been performed in a few other cities in sold-out theater venues. The talks always include local amateur actors – today in Vienna it’s Burkhart, Hannelore, Herbert, Hermine, Moni and Veronika’s turn. They will openheartedly talk about crashes, affairs and adventures. Great!

Cat basket & lion’s den
Cats have always been superstars! Doesn’t matter if there are resting majestically or moving smoothly, the velvet-pawed creatures have been playing an important role in art for a long time. Already 32.000 years ago, lions were depicted in cave paintings and the ancient Egyptians worshipped deities in the form of cats. From today on, a new special exhibition at the Natural History Museum connects art and nature and because of that it does not only present zoological preparations of small and large cats from its own collection, but also different paintings, sculptures and graphics from Cranach to Klimt.

30 minutes vegetable cuisine
The never-ending cooking dilemma: it shouldn’t take too long, it should be healthy and, please, it shouldn’t be too complicated! Those are exactly the points Katharina Seiser regarded in her new cookbook, which she created with the support of Ekkehard Lughofer and Mr. Adamah, Gerhard Zoubek. All the recipes don’t take longer than 30 minutes; they are vegetarian and organized by seasonal availability of the vegetables. At today’s book presentation, the authors will be giving advice on shopping and storing as well – and, of course, there will be sampling. Check out a few recipes beforehand at our portal!

Veggiezz
We know what a risotto is. But now, we can also enjoy quinotto – this type of meal including quinoa makes up a whole section of the menu at Veggiezz and it is served with green coconut curry, chili or mushrooms. Or you can decide to go for a burger (also gluten free), wraps or super food chickpeas pasta. Doesn’t matter what you order: everything here is vegan! The “vegan dining room” opened its doors in the ninth district after their first location in the city center, and its furnished in a pleasantly-modern country style. They even serve vegan wines – and homemade lemonades ranging from raspberry-rose to thyme-lemon.

Super cool sneakers-store! In order to catch the eye of passersby the ground floor of the store, which is located close to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, includes a big wooden installation and street art. Which is probably supposed to emphasize the concept “Berlin sneaker culture meets Viennese art esprit” ;-) Only when you get really close you notice that it’s not a gallery, but all about the sneakers in the basement. Those are presented on wallboards, to try them on you can settle on sitting rocks. The selection is stylish as well: hip models like Rihanna-Pumas with ribbons or polka-dotted Adidas-NMDs, but also classics like “Gazelle”.
