editorial

"Heya Girls!"
Like every country bumpkin, I too dream of one day moving back to the country. Life is simpler there and in the absence of other possibilities, you’d finally have time to read again. In my youth, for instance, the only highlight of winter was the ice disco. There was flirting, bantering, making out, and showing off ice skating skills. Until the ice disco became “uncool” und closed forever. So, I was a little stunned when I recently experienced an acute relapse into my teen years – and that in the middle of the city. At Engelmann, the oldest artificial ice rink in the world, there’s a racy ice disco every Friday night that would be a credit to every village. How convenient! Now I can stay in the city ;-) But first, we’ll all have a nice Christmas. And then hear from each other in the New Year!

Wishing you a loving Christmas and best of luck for 2018,
Your CitySpotterGirl

Unfortunately, one of CitySpotterGirl’s favourite boutiques will close forever on 24 December :( But until then, there’s a huge clearance sale at Goldstück in the 7th district with uber bargains. If you’re quick, you may manage to snatch one of the beautiful, vintage-inspired lace- and summer dresses, a cool Toino Abel straw bag, turbans, or jewellery, reduced 50%! Plus, there’s a decorations & textiles sale today – with pretty remnants and bulk goods from previous collections. Even the lovely shop-furnishings are up for grabs!

Let it snow
Flakey paintings and crystal lithographs are currently fluttering in front of visitors’ eyes at the gallery Lehner. Until mid-January, a nice little exhibition on the subject of snow has made itself comfortable there. There’s a wide variety of different winter-white positions from 100 years of art history, like “Snow-covered Houses” by Gustav Hessing from 1940, “Flight into Egypt” by Jeanne Hebbelynck or heartwarming “Wintry Scenes by Gerta Overbeck. So, in a way, it’s snowing expressionistically, art nouveau-like and contemporarily. Nice idea!

Galerie Lehner, Getreidemarkt 1, 1060 Vienna. Until 23 December + 8-12 January. Tue-Fr 14:00 to 18:00, Sat 10:00 to 13:00. Free entry. Web

 Sappy Rauth
„Katharsis“ @ Vote
An exciting and pitch-black evening at the Gallery Vote. Ceramist and painter Sappy Rauth has thought of a very special “twelve nights”-cleansing spectacle for the day of winter solstice. First, you dive into Rauth’s abstract and neon-picture world, which is totally flashy in the dark, in black light (careful: bombshell effect!). And then, you’ll party in the light of candles, with cathartic brain-food and Peruvian techno. If you like, you can knead your long-term problems into clay and have them burned into a piece of art by Sappy. You’ll even see a “golden Leberkäse roll”. Really offbeat.

First Pho Then Cake
You really only need one reason to visit the hip Vietnamese street-kitchen-shop Ivy’s Pho & Grill: appetite. Because the delicious Pho-, curry-, and barbecue specialities don’t just warm your stomach but also your heart. Today and tomorrow, there’s an extra highlight: cake artist Sophia Stolz is there with her crazy, insane-ingenious dinosaur-, Barbie-, and “Get fat”-signature cakes, Weihnachtsmann Matcha Balls, and pink Mochis. They are kind of too good to devour. Taste them anyway, pack some festive day provisions, and test Matcha punch for free!

Dutch Design Pop Up
Actually, blickfang Design Fair had already been a guest in Vienna in October. But since a lady can never surround herself with TOO many beautiful things, the Dutch embassy has simply extended the Dutch-design-gig! Until 31 January, you can buy all kind of mega hip and functional stuff by young Dutch designers at the Dutch Pop Up Store, which has made itself comfortable at Atelier Roee. Absolute eyecatcher: the perfect “Little Black”-bag, cool astronaut vases, or purist piggy banks for the next New Year’s wish. Changing assortment!

kronlanddesign Vintage Pop Up
Animals under the Christmas tree are a complete no-go, obviously. But the gifting of furniture is up for debate ;-) Especially since there are many super cool finds in good condition from ex-crown lands Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, and others in the well-stocked Vintage Pop Up from kronlanddesign. For instance, CitySpotterGirl spotted a mega chic pink-black-white side board by Jiri Jiroutek or two classic, bottle-green armchairs from the 60s. There’s also smaller stuff. When in doubt, simply gift your own home. Really Danube Monarchy-like!

Zoeca Christmas Pop Up Shop
Bling-bling! As of today, jewellery label Zoeca by designer Katharina Zöchling is in Vienna with a huge pop up. Inspired by the easy-going life in L.A., she founded the startup, that is pretty successful by now, when still a student in 2014. Until 30 December, you can try on and, of course, buy the fine, timeless pieces of jewellery. But first, there’s a great opening-party with drinks, a gift-certificate tombola, and other goodies. CitySpotterGirl has already fallen for the little “delicate heart”-necklace and the “#girlboss”-bracelet. Huge choice from fashion jewellery to real gold!

Panic shopping at violettsays
This year again, Viennese label “für fröhliche Frauen und furchtlose Männer“ hosts pre-Christmas last-minute shopping event. Word has long gotten around that they have unbelievably pretty-colourful dresses and skirts, but you could also strike it rich with brooches, bags, and scarves. Some of them with funny sayings (“I’m a bit scared, I’m so pretty right now”) – grins. So, if you still find yourself without presents, step onto the emergency brake here today until 21:00! For purchases over 50 €, there’s a little free present. So don’t panic, girls!

Christmas stars at Palmenhaus
Where can you stroll through a sea of blossoms in the middle of winter? In the historical Palmenhaus in the park Schönbrunn (the biggest glass house of its kind in Europe, btw)! Right now, it’s hosting the impressive Christmas Star collection from Bundesgärten with decades-old specimens from Schönbrunn garden, but also all new hybrids! Originally, the plants from the spurge family come from Mexico, where they were worshipped by the Aztecs as a purity symbol. Since 1950, they have been revered here as well. Simply because they have such a beautiful, festive sparkle!

Christmas Special: Marina & The Kats
If the whole family-melancholy on the 24th is not really your thing or if you simply need some space after, just head over to Porgy & Bess at 22 o’clock! There, charismatic Viennese singer Marina Zettl, plus her band The Kats, appreciate some “addition to their family”. Accompanied by hot gypsy-guitar-sounds and upbeat melodies, you can cheerily swing through the silent night. An event so jolly it’ll make magical sparks fly here, too. The songs are from the current album “Wild” and sound like moony diva dreams and sunny palm beaches. Listen in here!

With the homeless through Vienna
Show some charity and compassion! At the association “Supertramps”, (formerly) homeless people give insights into their time on the street. At the women’s guided tour this evening, Renate talks openly and honestly about her “wild 80s in Vienna”, bygone everyday worries and survival strategies, and shows how she slept and got a hold of money and food. The tour leads through Praterstern and Volkert quarter. On 27 December, it’s Sandra’s turn to talk about hidden homelessness, women’s shelters, and strong women. Both get under the skin.

Meeting point: Praterstern (exit Giant Wheel), 1020 Vienna. 25 December 14:00. 15 €. Sign up. Web

The 39 Steps
Alfred Hitchcock’s crime classic in a different version!  “The 39 Steps” is playing tonight at Theater in der Josefstadt. Not as a film, of course, but in the highly-praised theatre version by theatre director Patrick Barlow. Ruth Brauer-Kvam und Alexander Pschill, among others, prove that Hitchcock was not only able to do horror but could actually be hilarious. Pschill plays a murder suspect who only has to bust an entire spy ring to prove his innocence. It really gets down to business in the Scottish Highlands and in London in a wonderfully thrilling and quirky manner.

Christmas market Schönbrunn
This year, CitySpotterGirl has not made it to a single Viennese Christmas Market. Too much stress, too many tourists, and somehow just not in the right mood when thinking about a tipsy mulled wine spree. But today it’s happening – the handing out of Christmas presents is over, the day is still young and fresh. A good opportunity to put on warm clothes and, in complete tranquillity, take a stroll through Schönbrunn, cast a last glance on the 18-meter-high fir tree and saunter across the beautiful market in from of the scenic Palace. Perhaps even with a glass of punch :)

Christmas at Snow Globe Manufacture
As it’s often the case with inventions, manufacturer of surgical instruments Erwin Perzy came across the decorative snow globes by pure coincidence. (He had actually tried to gain a bigger light output of a carbon filament lamp.) Since then, the nostalgic wonder globes with Christmas trees, good luck-pigs or ferries wheels are travelling around the world! Until December 30th, you can admire many of the splendid kitsch objects in the snow globe museum & shop. And ladies, it’s very well possible that you may not trip along home without one of these personal good-mood-souvenirs.

The crazy 50s
Even though many a CitySpotterGirl fan will be way too young to remember the music of the 50s – when “Pack die Badehose ein” comes on, your toes will automatically tap along! On today’s program: a colourful Fifties-Hit Revue to sing along, reminisce and dream. With the biggest earworm hits by Caterina Valente, Conny Froboess, Pirron & Knapp. When in doubt, just grab your grandma and grand aunts and sway away to “Itsy-Bitsy-Teenie-Weenie-Honolulu-Strandbikini“. By the way, there will also be two New Year’s Eve shows of the entertaining jamboree. Fun!

Florentin1090
Cafe Berg has already been deemed an institution but nothing is forever ;-) And thus, there is a nice successor who brings some culinary-Israeli flair to the street: Florentin1090 is the name of the new, friendly restaurant with tasty breakfast mixes, fresh salads with couscous, beef balls and sum sum as well as delicious main meals which will take you right into the scene and gourmet quarter in Tel Aviv with the same name. CitySpotterGirl has tried Shakshua (poached eggs in tomato sauce) with baked cauliflower and Tahini basil sauce. Thanks, I liked it! Cosy, oriental chic.
